I just wanted everyone to know that I had to edit out number 21 which was King Crimson because they blocked the video. I used nine seconds of 21st Century Schizoid Man and their management company did a manual takedown of the entire video for those 9 seconds.
Shame on they management👿
Yep that's the state of King Crimson on UA-cam alright. Sucks.
King crimson will never change lmao, never seen a video up on youtube more than a day with their music
OMG those MFs
And i am a real KC fan. In Australian parlance Fripp is a dick.
“Did it inspire a genre?....” = Black Sabbath / Black Sabbath
Not until they heard Coven.
Metallica could be on the list too.
@@Snus83 I thought about that too, BUT it's both actually Metal and not necessarily Rock - so there could be another Top 20 list coming...:)
Sabbath blocks.
@@Snus83 Kill 'Em All is really difficult to get through, and doesn't define the band, nor the genre. Nothing like Appetite. Ride the Lightning, on the other hand...
Another vote for 1978! Dire Straits debut in the midst of the punk era proved that the clean strat sound was alive and well! Every track on that album was fantastic.
Amen! 1978 was an incredible year for music. I bought Dire Straits' debut that year on 8-track. Mark Knopfler's clean Strat tone was so smooth.
Great choice
and personally i find a lot of my favourite songs in that album like down to the waterline and six blade knife
Dire Straits would be my #1!
I graduated from high school in 1978. In addition to the Police, Cars, Dire Straits, Devo (!) and Van Halen releasing their first albums that year, these were as well: the Stones, Some Girls; The Who, Who Are You; Darkness on the Edge of Town, Springsteen; Stranger In Town, Bob Seger; Double Vision, Foreigner; Pieces of Eight, Styx; Excitable Boy, Warren Zevon; But Seriously Folks, Joe Walsh; Parallel Lines, Blondie; This Year's Model, Elvis Costello; Hemispheres, Rush; 52nd Street, Billy Joel; and Jesus of Cool, Nick Lowe.
I remember my favorite radio station playing the Stones "Some Girls", the entire album, uninterrupted, on the day it was released. It was an amazing year for music, unmatched by any other since.

I missed “Black Sabbath” by “Black Sabbath” from “Black Sabbath”, it's where heavy metal as we know started, I also missed “Facelift” as is the first mainstream grunge album.
Yeah, I question the absence of Facelift as well. Not only one of the best debuts, but in my personal top 5 all-time.
the two I thought about right away as well
Couldn't agree more. "Black Sabbath" deserves a place of honor in any discussion of rock and metal. It was truly mind blowing for its time, contains some extremely classic songs, and still sounds great today.
took the words out of my mouth lol, still a stellar list tho
Black Sabbath, the first time I heard that album it was me and my guitar player and a couple of friends. We were properly stoned and after every song we'd just look at each other and smile. It was a musical event in my brain, so fresh and so heavy!
I like Chicago’s 1969 debut “The Chicago Transit Authority”. Peter Cetera’s Bass, Robert Lamm’s piano, Terry Katy’s guitar..... and those horns!
yeah, that's another one that definitely would have made my list. maybe a little too much filler but still
Agreed. Great album.
That's the one I would've added. One of my all-time desert island discs. Actually, two discs. The other I'd have added is Days of Future Passed by the Moody Blues. For all practical purposes, this was their real debut album.
I started thinking of that, but is Chicago Rock? They play everything.
Yeah, Chicago!!! So many to choose from. I like Ricks picks. what are ya gonna do? ;-)
The Strokes “Is This it?” Is an unbelievably good debut album.
Completely agree, and it’s often overlooked in these types of discussions. I was gonna add this album to the conversation myself before I saw your comment.
Not only was it incredibly good, it ushered in a whole new era of rock. It really changed everything. All of the shiny, over produced, pop nu metal became irrelevant when this album came out. The 2000's were the way they were because of The Strokes the same way Nevermind shaped the 90's. This list not having it, especially after his preface on how he chose this list, is bizarre.
@@Alex-kd5jt I wouldn’t QUITE equate it with the impact Nevermind had, but The Strokes debut undeniably ushered in a new and very exciting time for rock and roll-unquestionably the last “landmark” moment for the genre. And while the moment of quality and inspired creativity in New York City and Williamsburg was short-lived, The Strokes were clearly the last band standing(just check out “The New Abnormal” for proof)-in my opinion, even towering over the likes of Jack White.
Yep... I remember hearing this album and it's follow up around 2004/2005. It was basically the first time I started really cared about bands and music as a teenager. I'd also throw Interpol's debut album in there as well.
Aerosmith?!!
What about Foreigner's first album? "Feels Life the First TIme", "Cold as Ice", "Long, Long Way From Home" and "Headknocker".
Toto: Toto (1978)
Chicago: Chicago Transit Authority (1969)
Pink Floyd: The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (1967)
Iron Maiden: Iron Maiden (1980)
Marillion: Script For A Jester's Tear (1983)
I am not sure about Marillion, a great album Fish in full flow but they had released an EP (12") Market Square Heroes and tracks on the EP didn't appear on a studio album.
Thank God someone said TOTO 🙌 The Whole album was phenomenal, not just hold the line but Girl Goodbye and Takin it back
@@tda2806 Also Jimi Hendrix released three singles before 'Are You Experieced'. It's debut album, not debut record.
@@bernardoconnor5512 Child's Anthem, I'll Supply The Love, Georgy Porgy.
@@tda2806 Script for a Jester's Tear, ABSOLUTELY!!!
HONORABLE MISSES:
- MC5: Kick out the Jams
- Television: Marquee Moon
- Black Sabbath: Black Sabbath
- Lynyrd Skynyrd: Pronounced Lynyrd Skynyrd
- Alice in Chains: Facelift
Absolutely agree. Your last two should have been top 10, with Lynyrd Skynyrd being top 3.
I think black sabbath is too have to this list. Maybe on the metal debut albums
I especially agree with you on the facelift album
Yep yep for Marquee Moon and Facelift
My first instinct is that Black Sabbath should be on this list, but the Paranoid album would fit his criteria much better (if it was their debut)
Black Sabbath literally invented Metal. I think it should've deserved a spot in the top 5 personally.
Yeah, why don't you take The Velvet Underground, for example and put Black Sabbath.
I was SHOCKED it didn't make this list. STUNNED
Black Sabbath isn’t a rock band presage but I still agree
Wasn't a big Sabbath fan in the day but have to agree, it defined a genre.
u said it yrself. it's metal not rock
Interpol - turn in The bright lights
The strokes - is this it
Television - maquee moon
And Many more, some of These are Really bad but i got The direction you were going with The video. Great one keep it up
Elvis Costello - My Aim is True
Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville
The Strokes - Is This It
Is This It is one of the best rock albums of the last 30 years
My Aim is True...DEF!
Elvis, the master of the three minute monster hit!
Great list! Some others to consider...
Bad Company - "Bad Company"
Devo - "Q. Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!"
Tesla - "Mechanical Resonance"
Toto - "Toto"
Just What I Needed, Moving in Stereo, Best Friend's Girl, Good Times Roll, ......The Cars debut is insane!
Maybe more pop than rock but The Stone Roses 1989 debut record is quite a gem!
+1, and it absolutely nails the three criteria Rick lays out at the start!
Best album ever
that's #1 for me
incredible record! Deserves a lot more praise than people think it should
My fave album of that era. I saw them live twice.
The Strokes debut "Is This It" influenced almost every rock band that emerged in the 2000s and is one of the tightest most perfect albums out there.
The Ramones debut "Ramones", came out months before the Sex Pistols released their first record and released the first truly Punk Album.
Both of these are grave omissions from this list.
Maybe he didn't like Julian's mic? 🤷♂️
Agreed on both. How could you not have the Ramones? They changed music.
Yes, but do they stand amongst the pantheon that is the 60s and 70s rock God's? In my opinion, no, because they borrowed so much from the bands that are in the top 10. Which is dangerous rhetoric, because "well Zeppelin ripped off black music" so on and so forth. What I'm saying is, if the strokes deserve to be in it, then so does almost every band from the 60s and 70s, eventually pushing the strokes out. So.... I agree that it's a great record, even though at the time of its release I would have called it watered down radio rock. I didn't take to bands like the strokes until much later when actual radio rock became absolute garbage. Queens of the stone age come to mind for similar reasons.
bongo155 well said. The whole SubPop catalogue, at that time, was “grunge.” I thought it was a great time for music.
bongo155 also, I hate the “riding the coattails” comment. It was a scene, All these bands were coming up together, Nirvana just struck a cord with the masses with Nevermind.
I love Temple of the Dog, but I wouldn’t have put it on this list. It deserves to be on the list, but not top 22, and not before Sabbath.
Yeah, since it's their only album feels kind of weird to include it.
Same. Temple of the Dog is a desert-island disc for me, but I don't think you can count it as a "debut album". It was always meant to be a one-off.
Yeah, all star bands or bands that form to make an album dont qualify in my book
Rick loves his Chris Cornell, has to pay homage.
I gotta agree Anthony ...TOTD doesn't belong I'd rather see a nod to of the metal gods -Sabbath, Deep Purple?
It's an amazing album. I have no problem with it being there. Also, I wouldn't discredit a debut album just because there was no follow-up. Just the opposite, I think. How many other bands/artists can you think of that only had 1 album and it was this good? Jeff Buckley is about the only one that comes to mind for me (and he really had 1 1/2 if you count "Sketches.")
Chicago Transit Authority - by Chicago. It was pretty brave to come out with a double album for your first album. Three lead singers. One of the best lead guitarists in Rock history. Nobody sounded like them. They played psychedelic, hard rock, love ballads, jazz.
Jimi Hendrix said they were too good to have on his tour I believe
Yes!!
Only the Beginning 🥁🎸👌
Still one of my favorites!
YES MAN!! Scary good band, so underrated and tragically forgotten by many. Im going to spin my copy now..
The Stone Roses tick all the boxes and should make any debut album list IMO
yes this
Thank you!
Sadly they seem rather unknown in the us
No Stone Roses debut album, no Oasis, or pretty much any Northern English band of that era for that matter. It's an utterly perfect album.
Black Sabbath - "Black Sabbath"
Bad Company - "Bad Company"
Allman Brothers - "The Allman Brothers Band"
Yes to Allman Brothers.
Yes, surprised Black Sabbath's first album wasn't listed - although, based on Rick's criteria, I can understand. Their first ablum was more blues rock, wasn't until their second album that they became true rock legends. Absolutely amazing tracks on the first album, but much blusier. I wouldn't list Bad Company here - great albums, great bands, but really didn't have the legs of most of the other bands listed (with the exception of Temple of the Dog which only had the 1 album). I also don't see Bad Co as defining, as they were very much the Deep Purplesque band. I can also understand Deep Purple not listed here as their first album was quite filled with a ton of hits, with the exception of Hush. And yes, the Southern Rock bands were completely left out - Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynrd, etc. All missing (not sure if its because they are "hardcore" blockers.
@LESTERAMA not just blockers, they’re notorious blockers.
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Definitely the Allman Brothers
Chicago Transit Authority - Chicago's first album is a classic, this album jams more than their following albums and still has a few hits on it. It didn't get much airplay until their popular 2nd album was released. ELP is another good one.
Great choice, love that album.
Chicago on my list
I am so happy you included the cars self titled album. That whole album was just pure music gold. Especially moving in stero/all mixed up
Rick I think you nailed this list and I agree on your 1 pick. Every song on Zeppelin 1 was great.
R.E.M.’s “Murmur”. They were already fully themselves on this 1983 debut album, which contains some of the most enduring songs in their catalogue. And the influence this band would have on the next two decades of alternative music was massive.
I would have included "Murmur" too. But so many good ones to choose from! I'm sure it's not easy coming up with a list like this.
Their debut was Chronic Town, an EP.
pyenapple, I’m very aware of Chronic Town, but we do delineate between albums and EPs.
I agree with Murmur. Such a beautiful and groundbreaking album.
One would think Rolling Stone's album of the year in 1983 could crack the list. It definately created a sound that was distinctly their own.
R.E.M. Murmur
Devo: Q: Are We Not Men A: We Are Devo
Talking Heads: 77
Joy Division: Unknown Pleasures
Arcade Fire: Funeral
Television: Marquee Moon
Jeff Buckley: Grace
Patti Smith: Horses
Devo is so amazing! I absolutely love those guys!
Definitely Joy Division
Wow, how did R.E.M get overlooked?? Good call!
@@robpoma3874 It's a stretch to call it a "rock" album but it was considerably more influential (and more memorable, and..well...better) than "Temple of the Dog."
@@Jason_Quinn Gotta have Boy by U2 if your gonna have Murmur. I thought it was quite perceptive of him to have Outlandos D'Amour by the Police on their.
The first concert I ever attended was Pearl Jam at the Palladium in Hollywood in May of 1992. It was a month before I graduated from high school. It was their "Ten" tour and it blew my mind!! They are UNBELIEVABLE live!! When Even flow started, I got full body chills ( like electricity all through my body!)
What a great memory!
Facelift by the Alice In Chains is missing for me, it really pushed the grunge scene to the mainstream and has so many amazing songs on it!!!
Absolutely
Finally i found someone in a same page 😊
I was waiting for it
Great list. Here are some I would have considered:
Weezer - Blue Album
Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True
Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville
Arcade Fire - Funeral
The Strokes - Is This It
Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Metallica - Kill 'Em All
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes
Fugazi - 13 Songs
Alice in Chains - Facelift
Solid list
Liz Phair and Fugazi, seconded
Exile in Guyville got so much great press when it came out, so I bought it. I didn't like it at all and just didn't get the hype. I know it's a matter of taste, maybe I just don't have any 😁
Weezer Blue Album, for sure. Can’t believe that was omitted, and probably just an oversight. That album was amazing.
I’d definitely include Weezer blue album in my top debut albums list and violent femmes, I’d also include Surfer Rosa by the pixies
The first Chicago album, Chicago Transit Authority (1969), perfectly matches your criteria for this list and is arguably FAR more significant than many listed.
Totally agree with you.
Yes!! C.T.A.’s debut album HAS to be on this list. Like Chicago’s other first four records, it was a double album - and it established the horn band rock genre. Terry Kath was one of the greatest guitarists of all time. And 50 years later, this very important band is still going strong!!
I love Chicago, but album 2. I do not like at all Kath's guitar feedback on all of track 7, and feed back on a good chunk of either track 10 or 11. Plus, frankly, why sing the line from Come Together on it? I dont like that little sampling.
Agree. Chicago Transit Authority is a fantastic rock album... debut.
AGREED!
I am SO GLAD you used the 1994 MTV Supersonic Live version for Oasis's Definitely Maybe. Such a killer version. One of the greatest versions of the song.
Dire Straits self-titled debut, Living Colour's Vivid and Jeff Healey's See The Light. Phenomenal debut's all.
Living Colour's Vivid; similar to your list, memories of earlier days and hearing my older brother playing it and running downstairs to find out what it was. That opening guitar for "Cult of Personality" is insane and just an overall great album.
That's what I just said.
Was about to say the same thing
It’s an absolute classic, for sure!
The first Dire Straits album. Also from 1978. Not just “Sultans of Swing”. Some amazing tracks on that record. Not sure what you bump off though. It’s a pretty strong list.
I agree.
Dire Straits is not a rock band. That's the reason.
@@jellebigge lies
Jelle Bigge what do you mean? They are definitely one of the best rock bands of the late 70’s and 80’s
@@trsidn At least not in the opinion of Rick. It's soft pop
Great list. Got some great ideas for my drive into work the next couple of weeks.
Great list Rick. Some of my debuts would be The Stooges, Dire Straits, Roxy music, Tom Petty, The Clash, Talking Heads, The Smiths, Murmur by REM, Stone Roses. I would also add Crocodiles by Echo and the bunnymen.. so many great debuts though, hard to choose just 22!
Glad of your placement of Led Zeppelin's first album. January of 1969, my brother, Jim, two friends, and I were honored to see Zeppelin play at the legendary Grande Ballroom in Detroit, MI (100 miles south from our home town, the village of Deckerville, MI) At the end of their set and many encores, as they were leaving the stage, Jimmy Page stopped at the edge of the stage to shake hands with members of the audience. We were sitting on the floor-- no chairs on the ballroom floor, just feet and butts -- right in front, first "row", between Page and Plant. I am only 5'2" in height so Jimmy and I could not complete a proper handshake, but our hands did meet. Zeppelin was new, and wonderful.
I totally agree with The Cars, Boston and Van Halen.
I’d add the debut albums by Queen, X, Devo, Pretenders, the Go-Go’s and Yazoo (also known as Yaz in the U.S.). All of those albums are solid from beginning track to the last track and arguably hold up to anything later in the catalogue of any of those artists.
Led Zep and Boston just blew everybody away with their first albums. They hit the ground running like seasoned pro's. Guns N Roses also.
Agree, but to not mention VH??? Come on. That brought the disco era to its knees ushering in the 80s. True. Music got watered down with posers, but they changed the game and really the whole album from start to finish os amazing
@@davidleeroth784 David you can't come on here and vouch for your own band. It doesn't look right.
@@SnowWalker1 😆 🤣
Bon Jovi one of the best sellers of all time.
@@davidleeroth784 Dave, you ruined every live show. Your studio VH albums are great but you sucked live, maybe should have stayed away from the alcohol. Sammy kicks ass and kicks yours !
Nice list. Here's mine (done before watching):
1. Are You Experienced
2. Illmatic
3. Run DMC
4. The Ramones
5. Nevermind the Bollocks
6. Black Sabbath
7. My Generation
8. BDP - Criminal Minded
9. Amerikkka's Most Wanted
10. Van Halen
11. Enter the Wu-Tang [36 Chambers]
12. Autopsy - Severed Survival
13. Velvet Underground & Nico
14. Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion
15. LL Cool J - Radio
16. Iron Maiden
17. The Doors
18. Obituary - Slowly We Rot
19. Eric B & Rakim - Paid in Full
20. The Stooges
21. Outlandos d'Amour
22. Licensed to Ill
I can understand that this album doesn’t measure up on the “tons of hits scale”, but it absolutely blew me away when I heard it the summer after my first year in college - Talking Heads: 77. A sound that was completely fresh and new, heralding a decade of extraordinarily creative music by this band.
joy division's "unknown pleasures" deserves a spot here
wait that's an album? I thought it was a T shirt
Id be very much surprised if Rick has listened to any Joy Division tbh as his taste is VERY USA centric
I so agree been waiting for Rick to at least acknowledge Joy Division as they have influenced most of the band's he does speak about
It's not only one of the best debut albums, Unknown Pleasures is one of the greatest 'start to finish' albums ever made, period. A masterpiece.
"Did the album inspire new genre, or multiple new genres?"
Well , Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath fits that criteria big time, I would say, definitely enough to make it to top five. Has every single album on this top22-list really inspired new genres? Anyway, thanks for amazing work Rick!!
Yup
Yessir. The number of bands in the 22 who would list Sabbath as a big influence would be an interesting ratio. \m/ \m/
Couldn’t agree more.
Hell yes! I first heard it 20 years after it was released (1990). Opening with the title song... those bells and THAT riff... hooked on metal for life from that moment, forever trying to find something else as dark and majestic as that.
There's no way that album should be excluded. Rick could have easily done the same thing as he did for Led Zep where he played the songs on his guitar to get around the 'blocking' issue.
Tom Cass b
TOTO their Debut Album was outstanding! Steve Lukather was 18 when they started recording the Album.
I also commented this, such a legendary album
Agree with the Zep album as the first song played indicated something new was coming. I immediately though the Police, Boston and the Cars would be on your list. Nice job.🙂🙂
Dire Straits: Self-titled
Elvis Costello: My Aim is True
Television: Marquee Moon
The Smiths: Self-titled
Pavement: Slanted and Enchanted
Fugazi: 13 Songs
Talking Heads: 77'
Daft Punk: Homework
Roxy Music: Self-titled
The Jesus & Mary Chain: Psycho Candy
R.E.M.: Murmur
Weezer: Blue Album
Elvis for sure. Where the heck did all of that come from!?!? And it just kept coming, in three minute blasts.
The Smiths! R.E.M.!
Yes! I scrolled through two hundred comments looking for either Fugazi or The Smiths! Like your taste!
R.E.M. was imho the greatest alternative band of the 80s, and their influence can be heard in the alt and grunge of the 90s. "Murmur," their first album, is a solid album that Rolling Stone magazine ranks at #18 in its Top 100 Debut Albums of All Time (take that, Beato).
Totally agree Murmur was the type of album that other people who would go on to form bands and create music would listen to, it's an absolutely vital album in alternative rock
Yup, defintely--Murmur should be on this list.
This also ^^
ASIA by Asia was a HUGE album (albeit by a supergroup). It was 4th on Billboard only behind MASSIVE albums like Michael Jackson's Thriller, The Police's Synchronicty, and Def Leppard's Pyromania. You listed King Crimson, but I thought Emerson, Lake & Palmer's debut also deserved a shout-out.
For the time warp factor: Crosby Stills & Nash. They were a quasi-combination of a lot of stuff that had gone before them and they just flipped it on it's head. Imagine you're a record executive and someone comes in with the idea of getting those three together. I must confess I would have tossed them out of my office. And yes, the first Black Sabbath does fall into this category.
Black Sabbath - s/t
Weezer - s/t
Ramones - s/t
Devo - "Q: Are We Not Men? A: We are Devo"
Metallica - "Kill 'em All"
Foo Fighters - s/t
Santana - s/t
The Stooges - s/t
Slipknot - s/t
I was pretty surprised and happy to see Gish on your list.
The guitars on Gish are amazing. Layers upon layers of sound and feedback. Siamese Dream gets all the love, but Gish is my favorite.
Alex is right. Just listening to those lead guitars on "Crush" are mind blowing
I was surprised about Santana as well...good call!!!!!!
We like a lot of similar music, many of yours are on my list above.
@@rykehuss3435 I'm pretty sure that thrash metal is a subset of rock.
Nailed #1. If you did a “greatest sophomore” albums, Zep would take that too. Love that you threw the Cars in as well. They are under appreciated in my opinion.
what about Foreigner's debut, and Toto
I agree.
The Cars, and a few other bands, made the MTV era in the early 80s.
Last comment about The Cars here made me think of another top twenty, which is "bands that made MTV worth watching" or "bands who put the M in MTV"! 😆 Oh those were the days!
Great list and totally agree with top spot
Worthy mentions which tick your criteria- Tracy Chapman and stone roses
Muse's showbiz is a stellar album start to finish, they really made their unique style right from the beginning of their career
good call. caught them on the black holes tour in Irvine CA. Top 5 concert ever for me. UNREAL.
and they even left one of the best tracks as a Japanese bonus
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses. Flawless from start to finish. It was the blue print for UK music in the 90s. Jimmy Page called John Squire the most intuitive guitarist he’d ever seen. The Who wanted Reni to replace Kieth Moon.
Exactly. If the world's most overrated band makes the list then how come the Stone Roses are missing?
(Yes, that's Oasis...)
@@rvallenduuk overrated hahahahaha ok boomer
it s obviously only about music known in america, hence this guy dont know roses, weller or smiths , surprised pistols made it
@@rvallenduuk oasis are underrated, but roses are missing cos this guy only speaks about music that made it to lakota
I know it's an unpopular opinion but I preferred Second Coming...Squires' work on the album is mind blowing...they deserved a mention either way
Television - Marquee Moon. This album is always forgotten about.Elvis Costello's My Aim is True is another that falls to the wayside.
Marquee Moon is so good. If Rick ever did a “What Makes this Song Great” on the title track or See No Evil I’d flip my wig.
I wouldn’t be able to click fast enough
Yep Marquee Moon is probably the most overlooked album of all time.
Loved that you included Smashing Pumpkins here. My all time favorite band. You should do a WMTSG about them!!
Great list Rick. Mine would most definitely include: Is This It (The Strokes), Unknown Pleasures (Joy Division), Nowhere (Ride), Turn on The Bright Lights (Interpol), The Stone Roses (The Stone Roses), The Gilded Palace of Sin (The Flying Burrito Brothers), Psychocandy (The Jesus and Mary Chain) and probably a few others I can't think of right now.
Great idea, if any one else knew who you were referring to.
Just saying.
Biggest problem?
You refer to a “Song” when defining an album.
Albums were the defining moment of Rock.
Glad you got number 1 correct.
@@keithcampbell7820 I think most rock music fans would recognize the albums I mentioned. They're not that obscure.
Just saying.
Pronounced, Lynyrd Skynyrd - Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, Things Going' On, Gimme Three Steps, Freebird
Certainly surprised more people haven’t said Skynyrd
Rick doesn't mention Lynyrd and a few bands because they're blockers.
yep this was the first one i was thinking that should have been in top 3 for sure
@Dave N Incredible. Every track is awesome. Things Going On is so G damn good. And any of the three major slower hits would be the best ballad of most bands.
Second Helping was better.
Nobody talking about Jeff Buckley's album, but I love it ! Sounds like no other album
Agreed! Stunning album; besides Jeff's magical voice the music itself was amazingly solid (mix of Alt rock and bits of folk an blues). Love it👌
@@bassdrummer9849
Count my vote also: this album shaped my tastes.
I was about to say the same thing.. Without Jeff Buckley, no "Muse" or "Nothing but thieves".. Who incidentally had great first albums too..
Agreed. What a voice, what a loss...
For me the only record I could be listening to forever
Great list!
Rick, you did great!.Thank you for the awesome video!!
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath was an album that holds a lot more influence than half the records on the list.
Jeff Buckley - Grace is another amazing debut album.
Yes, Black Sabbath is missing here, that‘s what I thought, too.
@@wernermoritz882 Right? One of the most influential albums of the last 40 years.
@@wernermoritz882 Same here! He sighted Ozzie but not Black Sabbath ... WTF!
I came here to write this comment, but you do it, my man 😂
@@clausbohm9807 Super weird picks are Stone temple pilots and ozzie.
Black Sabbath is the one I was most expecting after you said “spawned multiple genres” in the intro. Good list tho! Many I need to check out.
Rick I know you may likely never see this and it’s 2 years since you uploaded this video but man this content was GREAT!! You should seriously consider doing a series with your old guitar students. Derek in 1989 asked to learn Blue by Nirvana. Derek had incredible taste!! Bring Derek on and share stories. Where is Derek now? In person or video chat would be AWESOME!!
I don't know if you would call it rock, but one of the debut albums I love the most is "Blondie" by Blondie. All what they made later on didn't have this pure and raw energy anymore I think.
My humble recommendation: Dire Straits self-titled. This was a band that didn't need an album or two to suss out who they were - they had their whole vibe locked in from the get-go.
Dire Straits, The Police and Van Halen released their debut albums in the same year. And I think all three of them should be in this list!
Yeah man. Apart from the huge hit that was Sultans of Swing, that album had a bunch of songs that were awesome, with a clean, cool, vibe. I completely agree that it should have been on the list.
I mean, who doesnt like Down to the Waterline? 😂
@@jamiepacemizzi2822 - I know, right...? Such a great tune!
I specifically watched this whole video to see if Dire Straights was on the list ✌️😎
My first thought was "Where is Black Sabbath?" Their debut spawned an entire genre of music, remains timeless, influenced a multitude of players, and continues to do so, more than 50 years after it was released.
Also missing: Iron Maiden, Foriegner, Bad Company, Yngwie Malmsteen.
Nice to see you give a nod to The Cars! Well deserved.
Here's the question: Obviously you would consider Black Sabbath to be a "Heavy Metal" band. But would you Consider Zeppelin to be one? If you do, then you have to realize that Zeppelin put out 2 albums BEFORE Black Sabbath was released on Friday, 2/13/70. Which if they are both "Heavy Metal" bands, would mean Zeppelin started it because they came first.
@@josephknight58 : Good point. Like you say, it all comes down to whether you consider them metal, or are they just heavy rock?
I've seen so many arguments on YT about categorising bands that it truly makes me sick and tired of some of the pretentious crap that people toss around. Even though a lot of it may be well argued and correct; it just turns me right off. So I'm not going there.
youngwood moldstein ? wtf!
@@josephknight58 they are hard rock sabbath is metal
Black Sabbath's problem is their image. Behind it is some fantastic music and players. They actually started as an "answer" to flowerpower!
ELO’s debut is amazing it practically pioneered modern Baroque Pop
On the third day
"Hopes and Fears" by Keane was a wonder as well ! More of a pop album but still labeled "piano rock" and an astonishing record !
In 1969, I went to the fillmore east to see Iron Butterfly. The opening act was some band called Led Zeppelin. My jaw still hurts from when it hit the floor.
You said your jaw was sore from the after concert party!?
@@JohnDoe-ds6pr 🤣
My all time favourites , among others are :
The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Velvet Underground - VU & NIco
Suede - Suede
Oasis - Definitive Maybe
Ride - Nowhere
Great list.
I would also put Blur on that list as well
Swervedriver - Raise
My pfp
Great list. I would add The Music by The Music to that
The Doors. Break on through ,Soul Kitchen, The Crystal Ship ,20th Century Fox ,Alabama Song (Wiskey Bar),Light My Fire , Back Door Man,I looked at You, End of the Night , Take it as it Comes , The End . Fantastic debut that changed Rock.
Rick’s slight hesitation before his statement about Hybrid Theory prior to the clip really hits hard. I’m reminded of Adam Sandler’s tribute to Chris Farley, where even people who didn’t experience Chester and Chris in their heydays can appreciate just how much they meant to others.
Other great debut albums: "Black Sabbath" - "The Clash" - "The Ramones" - "Santana"
The Damned
Who-My Generation
Pretenders
Greetings from Asbury Park
I love those albums. I would add "Storia di un Minuto" by Premiata Forneria Marconi
@@Symphonicrockfran i guess "per un amico" came before storia di un minuto....other great debut album of an italian band was "arbeit macht frei" of Area....or "Ys" of Il balleto di bronzo....and i believe darwin was the debut album of Banco....other great debut albums are rocka-cola (judas), high voltage (ac/dc), camel debut album, magic brother (gong), Kobaïa (magma), legend (henry cow), Vincebus Eruptum (blue cheer), The great spectacular (dixie dregs), dire straits (dire straits), Stray Cats (stray cats), creedence clearwater revival (ccr), Samla Mammas Manna (SMM), Faust (faust), Birth control (birth control), freshy cream (cream) or safe as milk (captain beefheart.....among others....
Yes, "Black Sabbath"!
Aerosmith self title: Dream on, Mama kin & Movin' out.
Self titled Antemasque first and only album to date. The band consists of Cedric Bixler Zavala, Omar Rodriguez Lopez (Mars Volta) Flea and Dave Ellitch.
Mars Volta deloused in the comatorium.
Deloused was great, for sure. Given how bias this was towards the grunge era stuff, and even including Linkin' Park, I'm surprised the Mars Volta got no love here.
@@St99785 yeah, but it is Rick's list, so don't be too hard on him. I love the grunge bands, but I'm not so sure Nirvana Bleach would have made my list, but hey that's beauty of preference. Thanks for your message!
@@nealmoseley1982 I agree with you on Bleach. School and Blew had some sweet ass solos on them, and About a Girl was a cool change of pace. Love Buzz is okay, but I'm surprised that was their first single, as the original is WAY better than Nirvana's cover, but that's just my stupid opinion. Big Cheese is highly underrated too. But still, I wouldn't have called the album groundbreaking; certainly not at that moment in time. Only in retrospect i'd say it's quite good, but there are certainly better choices for sure.
Thank you for including the first debut album that came to my mind - Boston. I loved it then and I still do.
The Cars!!! One of my all time favorites!!! They NEVER get old.
The Pretenders debut is amazing and was groundbreaking... The first Boston album still sounds so fresh. Blizzard of Ozz debut is epic.
Pretender 1st album is band charisma times 100
Agreed. Every song is a winner!
I was shocked Rick didn't include Pretenders!
Ditto - was so impactful for those of us in the Midwest. Essentially gave us a taste of CBGB in middle America.
@@tracifailla1172 Born and raised in NY and went to college in Ohio... I totally get where you are coming from.
How is Lynyrd Skynyrd’s debut not on here!? So many of their most famous songs are on that album, including Simple Man, Gimme Three Steps, Tuesday’s Gone, and Freebird.
Totally agree with you.
Ditto
Dude. Yep
Absolutely, I also mentioned that to Rick, it's quite silly really IMO anyway. I mean Gimme 3 Steps, Tuesday's Gone, & Simple Man, were huge for the band. But, "Freebird" stands by itself alone as one of the most iconic Southern, Classic Rock song's in music history, if not the most next to LZ's Stairway to Heaven, period! SMH
Because this is HIS list. I'm sure there are debut albums you'd have that he wouldn't agree with, either. Get over it.
Moody Blues - Days of Future Past was ground breaking in that it included a full live orchestra
Seal - may not pass as "rock" but with the variety of genres that get into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" (and those quotes were intended), I think his debut album could be considered
Ambrosia (1975) featured "Holdin' on to Yesterday" and "Nice, Nice" but arguable introduced one of the most underrated bands into the popular mix -- A++ on writing and performance
Foghat (1972) - featured "I Just Wanna Make Love to You" - a nice old blues remake, but in a driving style that was ahead of its time.
Toto - (1978) - Included "Hold the Line" which was a huge tune, but showcased the "new wrecking crew" for all they could do - and it only got better
Toto I and The Blue Album are MONSTERS of the debuts albums. So many legendary songs, all done at the first try.
Hold the Line, Angela, Girl Goodbye, Buddy Holly, My name is Jonas, The world has turned and left me here. Will never forget when I listened to them the first time ever.
Foreigner's debut album-- Foreigner was a pretty amazing first album, too.
Yessss!!
First album I ever bought. Wore it out.
Rick, I'm so glad that you included the Cars debut album. It's one of those albums that is best listened to as arranged instead of as a collection of singles - one song sets up the next and great transitions! Analog better than digital for sure! 1978 was a phenomenal year for music - I graduated high school then.
When I saw the name of the list, I just knew that you'd have to include Boston's debut, especially after you discussed the criteria you used to make the selections. I was hoping for a Top 5 ranking and thrilled to see #2! Tears to my eyes every time it's appreciated by you! Thanks!
That album was played incessantly during the summer of its release. Lot's of great parties that summer.
I agree.... I was a junior when their first album came out in the senior in their second album. I owned every one of their albums. The cars were so unique and amazing. Can’t believe we’ve lost Benjamin and Rick
Boston is my favorite band of all time
Let The Good Times Roll was our class song in ‘82.
I was pulling for The Cars Greatest Hits (Cocky title for a debut album but they easily backed it up) glad to see it make it. In fact the album could have had only one good song (Moving in Stereo) and make any list once Fast Times came out due to Phoebe Cates and the color of Red. 🎯
Good list Rick. There’s so many albums that could be added and it’s impossible to please everyone. I would have thought that The Allman Brothers Band, and Crosby, Stills and Nash would get a mention.
So nice to see Core and Shake Your Money Maker in honourable mentions. Core, especially, is still in regular rotation for me
SYMM should be in the list, hands down.
I knew the top album had to be Zep. Such incredible music throughout the album.
#3, #2, #1 have been part of my regular playlist since they came out ! 3 of my most favorite rock albums ever !!!
Rick: I'm putting the Sex Pistols on the honorable mention list
Ramones: :(

So glad you included "Gish". It is a fsntastic album, superb.
This is a great list Rick. I'd consider adding "Kill Em All" by Metallica and "My Generation" by The Who. If debut albums by former band members who go solo count, then "Bella Donna" by Stevie Nicks is also worth including.
Rick, I will never ever ever get tired of you talking about the Beatles.
Same. I was obsessed with the Beatles when I was in college, during the time when the Anthology came out. If you dig trivia, search for a video called "The Making of Sgt. Pepper - 1992". Such a great analysis and interviews with all members except John. Some great segments with George Martin.
Foreigners debut album remains one of my all time favorites. I heard it at a party and purchased it the next day.
I would include the debuts REM Murmur, Joe Jackson Look Sharp, Elvis Costello My Aim Is True and later, The Stone Roses first album. All classics of their genre.
Murmur! How could I forget that!
MURMUR!
Vivid by Living Colour was a game changer for me as a musician and IMO should be listed.
Kill’Em All, Black Sabbath, Cowboys From Hell, Facelift, High Voltage, Rated R
Kill'Em All (+), Black Sabbath (+), Pantera's CFH was their 5th album but the 4 prior were before the reinvented themselves so maybe it should count...monsterous album for sure Alice in Chains' Facelift (+)
As much as we wish it was, Cowboys From Hell isn't their debut
Rated R isn't QotSA's debut either, their debut was self-titled and is incredible
Cowboys from hell is pantera's 5th album

Thank you for including Heart on this list! They are absolutely incredible and don’t get nearly enough love.
Totally unknown in Europe, I will buy the album
My fav debut records off the top of my head:
Boy: U2
Appetite for destruction: Guns n roses
August and Everything After: Counting Crows
Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin
Definitely Maybe: Oasis
Yourself or someone like you: Matchbox 20
Parachutes: Coldplay
Gish: Smashing Pumpkins
Murmur: REM
The Blue Album: Weezer
Dire Straits: Dire Straits
Boston: Boston

I bought the cars album as part of a music play list for partys at my house, then bought it again because it got such a hiding.. loved your picks Rick.. led zep is spectacular to this day...NZ❤
Chicago Transit Authority! A sprawling, ambitious masterpiece of a debut. So unfortunate that they devolved into soft rock kings. Also, Mutemath's first album. Great creativity and virtuosity.
That's one of the first ones I thought of. Pretty lame list, overall. Too many bands from the 90's and 00's.
Ditto x100000 - Terry Kath’a guitar playing especially on Free Form Guitar is killer - also - love the cover of I’m a Man originally by Spencer Davis Group
Yes… I thought for sure that CTA would be in the top five. I was thinking Boston would be #1
@@onyxpenguin4210 Well, you weren't far off with Boston! :-) But, of course, his #1 pick was depressingly predictable. (Sorry, rest of the rock world, but I think Zeppelin is highly overrated.)
When they lost Terry, they lost their heart. A lot of bands can recover from the death of a band mate, but Terry was too big of a loss. Peter couldn't handle it.
Chicago Transit Authority by Chicago is my favorite debut rock album. The instrumentals are so complex, it sounds like the band had been playing together for ten years already.

@@I_Am_The_Pataphysicist I mean I also love the Led Zeppelin debut of course, but it is derivative, unlike the Chicago debut.
It's one of my favorite debut albums. I believe "Introduction" is at least 3rd place in Debut Rock Songs Of All Time!!!
I was nine when my brothers(one plays sax the other drums) put in together to buy a record player and CTA was the first thing they bought. Lost a bunch of music in the 80's and did not replace most. Bought CTA about three years back, and played it from start to finish a few times. Really glad I put that back into the collection.
Absolutely agree! CTA was an incredibly important album, and it’s hard to believe this omission. And Terry Kath was a god among guitarists!
I think a worthy mention would be The Darkness and their Permission to Land debut. In the early 2000's music was at a huge crossroads and The Darkness were a breath of fresh air. "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" turned EVERYONE's head. Their Spinal Tap meets AC/DC meets Queen vibe is really fun and well done. They made guitar solos cool again for the mainstream. Oddly enough, The Darkness were the light in a weird and somewhat lost era.
Love it. Love your top choice. You knew I would.
