This takes me back to better times. Times of a mix of rapeman, sonic youth, shockabilly and of course psychic TV / throbbing gristle and Coil. But no band since have used harmonics like these guys ... CABLES soaked with KEROSENE forever !!!
is that how they get that whirring sound? also how do they make it sound so metallic? at times guess almost synth like at times, been trying to replicate the sound for awhile but damn it doesn't even come close to the power grinder esque sounds of steve albini.
@@plasticpots2604 albini used two metal picks bound together, and had some distortion pedal as well as the famous harmonic percolator. he used a single coil guitar as well I believe. all that doesn't even begin to capture the sound, however!
@@plasticpots2604 cold fizzy distortion like a ds-1 in the “wrong” settings and it almost like he used a detune effect to get that chorus without the lfo movement sound. Combined with the metal picks and general shrill guitar that should be a start.
The fact that Big Black managed to make noise rock sound this good is what surprised me. Heard Atomizer a while back and fell in love with them immediately. L Dopa fix me alright.
I still remember walking into wax Trax records in Denver one fine fall day in 1986 and hearing “Keosene” blasting away on their stereo. Instantly hooked. Still a favorite all these years later. (I was lucky in that they got a hold of some bootleg 7” copies of these sessions a couple of years later, after BB had split. Still have that one as well.)
Atomizer was the second record I bought, followed by "Zen Arcade" of Hüsker Dü. First record was "Camouflage Heart" by Cindytalk. I call that a good education. There is nothing out there today, that could create that kind of impact onto the young generation (so they suck).
Also, there is music that makes as deep of an impression as this. Just because there isn’t contemporary music that’s as intense doesn’t mean you can’t like/find old music.
First hear BB on a compilation. It sounded so different from the hardcore and punk going on. Got all the records, including the 7" and bootlegs. I got to see them once in Chicago. Amazing. Saw Rapeman in Washington DC and Shellac 3 times. I met Steve Albini when he was recording a live Digits record. He wasn't anything like I expected, I asked him about his amp and he told me exactly what he was using (Marshal head with a Fender Bass amp for the low end, because you can play it as loud as you want and it won't break up).
@@Cassius3745yeah, but only two full LP’s. Hopefully this guy got around to all of it, but there’s really no arguing that the LP’s are both their best official releases.
Thanks for uploading this. Remember hearing on the radio when it was broadcast. Peel was essential listening for me during the 80s as a snotty young punkster....should have taped this off the radio. First time I heard Big Black then they split before I could see them. Most bands seem pretty tame compared to Big Black.

Newman Generator was that like hidden track that legit nobody even fucking knew about back in 89. Shit shredded then. Shit still shreds Today. Albini is god
That's a consideration, except I believe Albini himself recorded the original albums. In the case of Dead Billy he has stated many times that he couldn't get the sounds he wanted on that first EP because he recorded it in his small apartment where he had neighbors and couldn't turn in up as loud as he wanted to.
The CD releases of Big Black's stuff is notoriously shitty. I think they've cleaned it up now but there's still a lot of garbage rips online that are low quality, tinny and weak. The vinyl releases by contrast sound amazing. Half convinced this is because Steve is a purist who hates CD's (see the liner notes for the rich man's 8 track tape). If you're just talking about the production then the early stuff does sound like shit yeah. The Roland TR 606 does not sound great anymore and the guitar tone's much meeker than on their later albums.

it's good for the soul
Probably the best thing this band ever recorded, and both of their albums are classics.
Close but no cigar, man. Sound of Impact is the fucking thing. I mean, its version of Cables is basically an Apocalypse Now.

why is the mixing on this so much better than on the studio albums?
I wondered that same thing. I think JP let each band select the optimal mix to their preference, vs. the albums where a producer's ego determines it.

Didn't Ian Burgess record most of the BB stuff? also I am pretty sure this Peel sessions is the better of the two drum machines he used.
