I grew up in Ireland and got interested in Crass at the age of 12 in 1979 a year or so later my brother and I wrote to Crass a couple of times and couldnt believe it when we actually got hand written replies one from Penny and the other from Phil Free, and there were a handful of brilliant Crass produced badges and anarchist leaflets. The letters were directly responding to our questions and queries about the band, politics, religion, sex, and on how much it would cost us to get Crass over to our little hometown to do a gig. There was no bullshitting and everything was on a level and very honest and down to earth, they actually outlined the cost and expenses that it would cost, they were very much interested in the idea of doing a gig in a small town in Ireland. Fast forward 30 odd years and Penny and Gee actually performed a gig and exhibition in that very same small town in Ireland. Its a pity I didnt get to attend the gig Iit wouldve been great for me to show Penny the original letter which made the initial enquiries about Crass playing there over 3 decades ago. Much kudos to all who sailed the good ship CRASS they genuinely cared deeply for all that bought their records, attended gigs and were supporting the same causes. I dont believe we will ever see a band with such genuine integrity ever again. They were and will probably be the one and only real Punk Rock band ever. Peace and Love to all.

Crass is a very dear Band to me. There Noise collages are very presumably reasonable I got into Industrial…
Maybe I‘m getting in that trap of getting older, but I miss that fighting spirit today. Bands like crass weren’t only about Minority a or b, they looked at the whole society. They also were about fighting and not starting Shitstorms on twitter/X…..

Crass played our local youth club twice in 1981, and mixed with all the kids who turned out to watch them. What band shifting as many records as Crass were at that time would play a Youth Club at the back of beyond? I used to write letters to Crass as a kid and every letter was personally answered by a member of the band in a an envolope stuffed with badges and anarchist pamphlets. The real deal, no one even comes close.

A member of the band could just have been anyone, you could become a Crass member by claiming you are one, that's all it took. Furthermore, what is "the real deal" about someone sending xeroxed copies of pamphlets to fanboys? That's not real but lazy as fuck. Every youth center does that. If they would have been the real deal they would still be around, doing their thing. After all their music was simply shit. At least the message had some merit but it was drowned in a series of fucking retarded noisiness

Lyndsey Franklin your not wrong lyndsay, put some good quality headphones on turn up the volume and you really get the unique and unmistakable beauty of crass. A first. They are so much better musicians than one thinks. Listen to stations for example Desire, walls, they were purposely keeping the sound raw. But I bet they could have made records of superb quality. But choose to keep it as far away from the main stream as possible. With penny's military drumming. It's all beautiful. Look at the last guitar solo at the end of DON'T GET CAUGHT, and that's a 20 second glimpse into how good they could play. THE MOST IMPORTANT BAND OF A GENERATION. Kind loving helpful and friendly. That's CRASS

This was broadcast after 10pm by DJ John Peel who is a legend for bringing bands on from obscurity to his show from1970s onwards. I heard this set on Peel and is probably on one of my many cassettes of mine somewhere. It's a meme that people taped the top20 show (i did at times) but the ones that knew the good music, taped Peel shows. The BBC management/board were posh oldies who took no interest after 8pm as long as they didn't hear about it. Peel got noticed occasionally but was loved so much by so many generations that a whole radio station, BBC 6 Music, was created in a way to continue the type of work he did. Sadly Peel is no longer with us.

I took some acid once. As a joke my friend gave me a tape of Feeding of the 5000. Initially I thought it was going to send me on a bad trip. But the opposite happened. 30 years later I still say Crass is the best punk band ever. Dead Kennedys is a close second, and Lawnmower Deth did one of the best punk albums called "Billy" but it gets no respect. Corporate punk music sold in the charts always made me feel like I was "being cheated" as Lydon asked. But Crass never did that. Authentic and authoritarian over itself.
