Wow, Imitation of Christ lyrics are completely different from the album version. John Peel was an absolute legend, so many incredible bands and iconic sessions.
I completely agree with you Nap. I think that if The Psychedelic Furs had only ever recorded "Sister Europe", "India" and "Heaven" then they'd still be one of the greatest bands ever 🧡
I know im randomly asking but does any of you know a tool to log back into an instagram account..? I somehow lost the password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me.

always so emotional to hear the great john peel,i was so lucky to have my teenage years at the end of the 70s and into the 80s ,i would say the best period for music and thanks to john peels radio show ,well there will never be anything the same ever again only x factor shite
Thank goodness I got to see them back in 80’s. Such a great era for music and bands like the Furs. If only I had a time machine to go back to that time and get away from the s**t world we live in, in 2023.
I remember this word for word from the time I taped it off the radio. Played it so many times the tape more or less fell to bits. One of the best ever Peel Sessions. I was lucky enough to see them at Erics in Liverpool, fabulous album that.
Talk talk talk, a guy in a record store gave me his copy with another record by the hitmen(Bates motel). This furs record melted me, dumbwaiters, into you like a train, Mr Jones,,it doesn't stop until all of this and nothing,,, and that's quite something
This is mind blowing. It's like hearing the songs from a parallel universe. When, when, when will the BBC sessions be released again with an affordable price tag. Come on. Someone sort it out for (Imitation of) Christ's sake!
Forgot to say RIP John Walters, he also had that ear, so rare it makes me so bemused. Furs, excellent. Peel, Walters bet you didn't now music would virtually die without you...RIP xxx
With that sax and all, they were obviously one of the more original bands around, ready to help the Cure and New Order define the 80s. All very original bands.
This is exactly the session we want inundating UA-cam. Apart from the excellent his incredible taste, his humour and reality are so missed RIP John, great paintings, Richard, wish I could afford one! All in all, a perfect upload - we're listening, keep it up xxx
I used to record john peel when I had basic tape recorder when I was 15 in 1978. I remember this song Sister Europe and was instantly hooked on new wave music. Thanks for uploading such a clear session
My god. My big sister and her mates took me to see them at the Music Machine in 1980, I was 16. So many, many great bands then.. John Peel was a truly great man in how he helped working class creative people get AirPlay and access. Much missed.
FARTY ALERT: I loved listening to Peel in the late 70s & 80s, hearing many new (to me) bands, broadening my music palette, in the process; as did Old Grey Whistle Test and, a little later, The Tube, over on Channel 4. Some great bands, great music. Horizons broadened. Job done. Thanks, as ever, for posting.
Prefer these to the album cuts - more raw and refreshing than the heavy, over produced versions on the album (which I still like). Imagine that Peel would have felt the same.
Thank you for posting these ❤️ nothing like this was around in the US (and you had much better music in those days anyway) -- listening now is a bit of ageless sanity in the atmosphere of absurdity . . .
Excellent band, one of my favourites .... especially the first 2 albums, saw them several times in the 1980s and at Glastonbury1986. then also saw them in 2010 at Frome of all places , that's in England by the way.
They went on to become one of the best timeless musicians as their work never sounds old. From Dumbwaiter to We Love You to Sometimes to.... well a few more.
The Furs were a band who were heavier, deeper and far more interesting than the Synth Pop and New Wave/New Romantic contemporaries they were lumped in with here in the States.
yes...and pressure to fit that image no doubt sanitized their sound...couldn't have that dark, raw, sexy, trippy sound on American Top 40 radio...no sir. Clean it up and make them a boy band instead...Pretty In Pink was the death knell of the sound that made them interesting at all.
@@patrickcannady2066 The album and film versions of Pretty and Pink were significantly different. The latter sounded more like US top 40 stuff at the time.
@@JohnMoseley which I hated! I hated that 1980s AT40 sound, with its tinny, saccharine mix of overpowering drums and screechy vocals, no matter who was singing. UGH. Hate hate hate! Give me the fuzzier, balanced, warmer sound, with strong distorted guitar of the Furs' first couple of releases. I mean for fuck's sake, it's rock and roll, not fucking nursery rhymes. Jesus Christ on a popsicle stick...
Always been a favourite band. Great session! Must take this opportunity to thank you, Vibracobra, for ALL your uploads. Getting the chance to hear lots of stuff for first time as well as hearing John's dry wit and musings... Quality.
Man oh man do I love the early Furs. But do you know who I love even so much more? John Peel. Currently, Gideon Coe on BBC6 is the one DJ that I look forward to every day with eager anticipation, whose show is an event for me the way Peel was an event to the faithful back in the day. Coe doesn't really do sessions, but he does dig deep and often into the Beeb's session archives.
Ok so what the hell was going on in northern England to produce all this good music in the late 70's-early 80"s? There must have been some good acid going around.
'our love will never end, parties for our stupid friends' wow. was really struggling with the whole SAR-CoV-2 thang, then I heard I heard this track :) Peel's reaction is priceless: 'good, eh' xx
Thank you Vibracobra for these,Quality uploads,top band/dj peely,love him,I still have,on Good quality cassettes,about 30-40 Festive Fiftys programs,plus many other,amazing recordings,bootlegs, remember them ?Great comments on here
No arguments from me... all they have a ominous moody texture, fresh. FRESH and really bone tingling sensation! I played this song to death... I just loved the moodiness and intelligence! This has soul, this has body and unique intelligence about it... (I am from Calgary, AB Canada... Thanks for bringing this to UA-cam)
I miss John Peel, to think he once worked at KATT Oklahoma City! The P Furs are brilliant, their early days at the Golden Lion Fulham were great , I saw them at HOB Las Vegas a few years ago , great show!
I'm a huge Bowie fan but did not enjoy his polished pop hits of the early 80s - the direction that he went. To fill that vacuum, I became interested in the Psychedelic Furs (due to the sax) and Richard Butler's gravelly voice. The 2nd artist was Gary Numan for his futuristic and emotionally distant sound.
Love it - thanks. The want ad for a drummer is great. But they changed the lyrics on "Imitation of Christ" on the Peel session; the original ones were probably too controversial for a radio broadcast.
Butler would regularly sing variations in the lyrics back then...as the other tracks also show...and was still singing variable lyrics when I saw them live on the Talk Talk Talk tour...besides...the session was recorded before the first album
Saw the Furs at Goldsmiths, London, in 1979. Unfortunately the accoustics was terrible (it didn't help that I was standing near a speaker), and it felt like a wall of undifferentiated sound. This is so much better.
Wow, Imitation of Christ lyrics are completely different from the album version. John Peel was an absolute legend, so many incredible bands and iconic sessions.
It’s no wonder that they were Bowie’s fave when they came on the scene. The sax!!!!
Sister Europe one of their best songs

Thanks for adding John's comments and intros. They are music to my ears still after 45 years!
We all must thank John Peel for having given us, in Europe, the best of New Brits Wave.
i was a kid listening to the radio. think it was on thursdays. was it ?
Yes, then. It was extended beyond anyone since

Good lord - I feel like I’ve missed out on my own life. So much great music happening and I was largely unaware. Thank God for UA-cam
So glad I finally got to see The Furs live back in '03. Life goals.
Finally got to see them 2 weeks ago in Bilbao got to meet Richard too. 58 years old I've been a fan since I was 15.

1979! When anything and everything seemed possible with music! The post-punk years.
great version of Sister Europe for sure
Wow butlers voice became much more gravelly, but like this fresh original version of those tracks. Nice archive.

A few yrs into a great period for UK music. Loved his voice, I think Weller back then said he was his fav current singer.

they seem more relaxed. The mix is certainly better, you can hear the instrumentation much more clearly.
