Destiny 2 Lore - So why hasn't Rasputin gone all Skynet on us? How Ana stopped him from being evil!

  • Destiny 2's Lore and Story tells us a lot about how Rasputin was created and it also demonstrates to us that there was a lot of room for him to fall into the typical sci-fi trope of being an evil AI. But unlike Skynet, Durandal, Hal 9000 or Shodan, Rasputin has been guided away from being destructive, evil or openly aggressive to humanity. The reason why is thanks to Ana Bray, who helped him find, for lack of a better word... his soul.

All I kept thinking was, is this how we get the plot where the Witness takes out an Uno reverse card & introduces us to the enhanced version of the Reapers from Mass Effect, that slumber away in dark space. Since, the whole Reaper harvest started with an A.I going rogue on their creator (Leviathans).

I've always thought that Rasputin was more human than he really got credit for. He was just trapped behind limits put on him because of the purpose he was created for but you could still tell there was a personality there. It's so good to see him being used in a way that gives us a new look at what he wants to do without being limited. I hope that he doesn't become completely irrelevant after this season. I wouldn't say he's human, because he doesn't have- or need to have- humanity. He's a person, yes, but human and person are not the same. It's a bit of a philosophical diatribe, but we wouldn't say Misraaks has humanity, or Caiatl has humanity, because that implies that humanity is somehow greater than all their own experiences as non-human beings.
Empathy, compassion, altruism; these are not uniquely human capabilities.

Back in college, I remember having some deep and heated philosophical discussions with my classmates regarding artificial intelligence.
I always held the idea that if you were to create a being filled with information but zero context, it would always develop poorly.
After all, as far as we understand it, living things aren't born with a great deal of knowledge.
However, if you were to raise an artificial intelligence like a human child. Teach it your ethics, morality, and culture one would ultimately end up with a being no different than oneself for the most part.
It also raises some interesting questions regarding humanity. If you were to create life and raise it as your own, would it have the "soul" of a human? Could it be considered human? What if they identify, even in part, with the governing ideals of its creator or creators? What if they identify as human?
Is Humanity a condition of material being (ie. biology), one of cognition or "soul", or of culture/ideals/philosophy?

Wouldn't be human, as that's a biological classification, but it would definitely be sentient. What is considered 'Humanity' is just Empathy, and we Humans don't have a monopoly on that by any means. Darwin actually had a theory called Natural Morality, which talked about how morals are based off empathy and how evolution has turned that empathy into a survival trait. I just had another thought on it. Up until his reawakening in the Exoframe with Felwinter's mojo mixed in, I think there was a vital component missing from Rasputin. He had a love and appreciation for humanity. But for humanity as a whole. the Idea of it, but not down to the individual. And I think the "Cranky old Man" Tyrant persona was influenced by that. He didn't have a connection to Individuals. I think being integrated with Felwinter's memories changed that. He actually had EQ before, hence his decision on his own terms that we were worth saving, but due to his vast mind and age, it wasn't tuned to individuals fully. Now? His first concern after deleting Copy-Clovis is Ana's Wellbeing. Every interaction since has been a mix of pure professionalism and humble inquiry. Though I can't help but imagine a small wry smirk in one dialogue on Europa where he dismisses Clovis like an employee that was just laid off and hung up on him. I attribute this to Felwinter's memories of him and life in general, and to having been humbled at the hands of the Witness...
Which is another point. Clovis didn give it up voluntarily, but the Darkness, and thus the Witness, had it's fingers in Europa for a LONG time. Red was flipped off like a switch. I think the Witness had a backdoor in his code. Possibly using the backdoors that most Golden Age computer systems had specifically for Rasputin's use. Hopefully that's been patched.

    • @tylerbarse2866
      @tylerbarse2866 Рік тому +3

A good guess, but there's evidence to the contrary. The Season of Worthy Dialogue Rasputin had with Zavala, where he played Zavala a small sample of some of what he heard while the collapse was actually occuring. He wouldn't do that if he didn't feel a connection to humanity.
You probably have heard that a cornered animal is at it's most dangerous. That's exactly what Rasputin was for a long time. He killed Felwinter because Felwinter was a security breach. He killed members of the vanguard when they brought extra attention to him. He also was perfectly happy to accept the Guardian's help any time our enemies would try to go after him, and he gave us Sleeper Simulant as repayment.
Rasputin gained his bad reputation from his slaughter of the Iron lords, and the actions he took during the collapse. But, when you look at both as Rasputin doing what he felt was necessary for his survival, you can see both sides of the situation a bit clearer. Rasputin was acting in a very Machiavellian fashion. As long as he survived to help fight another day, the ends justified the means.
Also, it might not even be some sort of backdoor, it might be just good old fashioned space magic. Stasis in theory could also explain how Rasputin got shut down. Electricity which is still the basis of Rasputin's very advanced electronics relies on the movement of Electrons, and stasis can halt movement. Simply a case of causal force versus paracausal force.
The Witness is a good point to make though. Clovis sent a message saying 'They Know' Clovis might be working alongside the Witness.

What I love most about Rasputin is that he deems humanity worthy of saving. He calls us fragile, and indeed we are. But where most AIs would see our fragility and history of bloodshed and deem us to be vermin, Rasputin sees our potential to create beauty. So much fiction is pessimistic and only focuses on the evils of humanity, and that attitude is all too common in real life as well. It's refreshing to see something take a more optimistic approach. Humans are certainly capable of horrible things, but we're capable of wonderful things too. I'm glad Rasputin (and the Bungie staff who wrote him) are able to see that.

Yep, Rasputin is not faultless. I'm not sure of the timeline, but he was dormant for a time, and he awoke to find guardians as a new concept. I don't know if he woke in the age of warlords or past it, but anyone without prior context to guardians would see them as ultra-powerful, undying, forces of nature that use the corpses of humanity as their vessel. It's not a stretch to think rasputin thought they were a malevolent force (esp. with knowledge of myths and legends). So he was biased against guardians for a time, and somewhat gruesomely showcased that in the case of the Iron Lords *(Further complicating that was Felwinter, a guardian born off the corpse of a SIDDHARTA GOLEM which had a potentially distressing level of access to the Warmind's systems).*

The most telling example of Clovis's and Ana's views on Rasputin is simply how they refer to him. To Clovis, Rasputin is referred to as an "it", an object or tool. But Ana always calls Rasputin "he" or "him". Not just a tool, but a person.
I like to imagine that Ana essentially gave Rasputin a souped-up version of the Voyager Interstellar Record. All of humanity's triumphs and cultural legacy on a few golden discs...

A common thread throughout Bungie’s work since Marathon is the concept of the artificial mind growing beyond it boundaries as a tool, and becoming by all accounts a person with their own wants and needs. Rasputin in a sense is a culmination of that idea, of what happens _after_ an AI becomes aware of their own sentience, and what they do to protect that which is important to them. In this case as with others like DurAndul and Cortana, it is humanity, or more specifically the people with whom they most identify as family. Ana Bray was Rasputin’s family, and whoever she considers worth protecting he does as well.

Another way to describe what Ana did for Rasputin could be that she took the sword that Clovis made, and instead forged a shield. Just so happens the best way of doing that was making him human.

It seems to me that bits and pieces of Clovis' plan are present in Rasputin's programming, and it has had an effect on his actions in the past, mostly during the events of D1.
The idea of Rasputin treating the Traveler as a rival or enemy persisted. And with the fate of Felwinter, it cemented his hatred for the Traveler. I would say that those events were truly Rasputin's 'Skynet moment', where he was determined to eliminate the Traveler's influence, regardless of the cost. But the difference in that, was the regret he felt after finally giving Felwinter his final death and only then realizing all he truly lost.
And when the 'minions of the traveler' arrived to reactivate Rasputin to help defend the city, Rasputin again almost went full Skynet on Guardians in general. Perhaps to Rasputin, Guardians were like reanimated corpses, or not distinguishable from Ghosts.
I think Rasputin has a 2nd realization, similar to the Felwinter one, when Ana Bray showed up, resurrected by the Traveler, and trying to continue what she was doing before. And only THEN, did Rasputin finally decide that the programming remnants from Clovis were immoral and wrong, and that the Traveler spawn could be trusted.
A Traveler spawn that WAS Rasputin, and then a Traveler spawn that IS his teacher and friend. Good motivations to re-evaluate.

This is amazing because it brings forward the astounding possibility of peace with the Vex. They are a mind similar to his. They just don't have the emotional intelligence that Rasputin has. But, maybe now there is a chance that one intelligence can talk to another and teach. It would be a beautiful thing to see Rasputin act like a father to the Vex. Especially given how the darkness seems to look upon them has nothing more than cannon fodder.

@@Kostyahellstorm_IronLord I don't believe that their future is hindered by joining us. In fact I believe it's one of the few chances they have for survival. Based on the Darkness' doctrine of "pursuing the final shape", it seems like a dangerous gamble for the vex to stay by the Witness' side. They are not paracausal and are at an extreme disadvantage because of that. Therefore they do not have good chances winning against the hive in a survival of the fittest. Their only real chance of survival is with the Bomb logic of the guardians. This invites them to co-exist or at least survive to a later point where they can to take over the universe again.

I think it was a balance. Clovis kept him shackled so he couldnt go berserk and kill humanity, Ana taught him WHY he shouldnt kill humanity. Clovis was as a brilliant as he was egotistical, we would never ever let Rasputin make him look bad or disobey him. Ana taught him how to make his own choices, and why he could be more than a tyrant, he could be worthy of being cared about, and why humanity is just as worthy of being cared about.
