This is the Jail scene from the Andy Griffith episode “The Darlings Are Coming.” It is well-known that the Darlings “never” speak in the series, only give blank stares (and SING!), but in this episode, you can hear them say a few lines!
Rodney Dillard has explained (and you can find some interviews with him here on UA-cam and other Internet sites) that the producers could not afford to hire them as actors, because if you spoke on-screen lines, it was considered “acting” as opposed to performing (singing) and required a different pay scale, by law. Therefore, Andy got them with the intention to promote their songs, but not to have normal, spoken lines.
HOWEVER, in this episode, you can hear them speak a tiny bit! Listen and watch carefully - At the 24-second mark, you can hear (and see) Mitch say “About to pop” after aunt Bee asks “Are you sure you had enough?” Doug can be seen still chewing his food as he sets his plate back in her basket, so it is unlikely that he responded at that point. I saw Doug doing an interview on an old TNN show where he stated that the only line he ever spoke on the show was “Good beans, aunt Bee!”
At the 1:00 mark in the clip, just after Andy says goodbye to Aunt Bee, the boys stand up, and you can clearly hear and see Rodney say “Goodnight.” Doug has his back to the camera, but he does seem to be moving his head as if he was saying something, and it’s possible that’s where he spoke the line above. Mitch has his pipe in his mouth, so it’s unlikely that he spoke anything further, and Dean is standing behind Rodney, partially blocked from view, so it’s difficult to tell if he said anything.
Can anyone else watching pick up on any other spoken lines or words here? Let me know what you think!
