    This is fascinating. Andy Griffith pointed out how different the Andy Griffith Show was because it wasn`t filmed before a live studio audience. With a`live audience you have to play TO them, and the jokes have to come regularly. This is a small taste of how it might have been had it been shot like a sitcom. Thanks for posting! :)

    • @JimiBLong
      @JimiBLong 2 роки тому +2

      l agree. You can definitely tell the difference, especially when they're shot before a live audience and the actors constantly have to stop talking, right in the middle of delivering their lines, to wait for the live audience to stop laughing and applauding. Most times, it just ruins the whole flow of the joke and makes the line less funny.

      Yes, you are correct. Andy Griffith and Don Knotts are right up there with Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, George Burns and Gracie Allen, Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance (or Gale Gordon), Jackie Gleason and Art Carney and Mike Nichols and Elaine May, each of these considered among the very best comedic duos of all-time, even if only two of these pairs (Burns & Allen and Nichols & May) officially performed stand-up comedy routines.

This is my number one show I never get tired of it. That being said; I hope for one second that this audience didn’t take this performance for granted and to witness these two comedic icons in action must have been insane! The show went south when Don knotts left.

    • @gymnastix
      @gymnastix 6 років тому +4

      "The Andy Griffith Show" certainly became less comedic after Don Knotts left the series as a regular cast member. From Season Six onward the series evolved into even more of a dramedy, although the series had always had some dramatic elements to it, some episodes (such as "Opie the Birdman") more than others.
      But, perhaps ironically, the series' final two seasons were when it was ranked highest by the A.C. Nielsen books, #3 in Season Seven (1966-67) and #1 in its final season, Season Eight (1967-68), even though Season Three saw the series with its actual largest number of viewers, an average of 29.7 million in 1962-63.
      Don Knotts made guest appearances in all three seasons after he departed the series, two episodes each in Seasons Six and Seven, a single episode ("Barney Hosts a Summit Meeting") in the final season (Eight), the latter which was also the highest-rated episode of the entire series.
      Don Knotts also won five Emmy Awards (for "Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Comedy") for two of those three years he made guest appearances reprising his "Barney Fife" character in "The Andy Griffith Show," as well for "Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role by an Actor in a Series" for the three seasons (One through Three) while he was a series regular in "The Andy Griffith Show."
      So, no, "The Andy Griffith Show" didn't actually "go south" after Don Knotts departure as a series regular. The series merely changed its direction a bit and relied upon other ensemble players, particularly George Lindsey's "Goober" Frances Bavier as "Aunt Bee" and Jack Dodson's town clerk "Howard Sprague" to fill the comedic void after Knotts left "Mayberry."

    Irony is that 1965 was the last year Don Knotts would be "Barney" on the AG Show. Andy was considering quitting the show & Don had a movie contract offer from Universal & took it because he naturally assumed that this would be the last year of the series. However, after Don finalized his deal with Universal, Andy decided to renew his contract to keep doing the series.

    How blessed those of us were to have been born of 'The Greatest Generation', Also known as, 'Baby Boomers'! I don't like to disparage present-day 'Stars', movies and TV programs; but, when compared to the productions and personalities of which our generation had the great pleasure to have been witness, the differences in moral character and talent is glaringly obvious. We are indeed, a blessed generation!

      Hi. My email is david@ms-tsc.com. I'd love to get a copy of the entire special but at least the concluding musical number. It's Andy reciting James Weldon Johnson's poem the Creation. I hope you can help me out.

    You don't see channels brag about that their programs are in color anymore.

    I wonder if this is actually from the Griffith Knotts Nabors special, which dates from October 1965 (not 1966). A review of the 1965 special says none of the three actors ever appeared as his Mayberry character. I think it might be from The Don Knotts Special, his first, which was broadcast in October 1967 on CBS.

    This isn't the actual show. They went to color on the actual show after Don left. He did return for some guest appearances after he left the show. Andy did the same with Mayberry R.F.D after he left the show. Best show ever.
