    I like the fact that you just love to fish, you have just as much fun fishing for gills and carps as for bass. I am the same way.

    I use a Phluger President with a 6’6” St. Croix premier in light action. I use 4 lb. Trilene XT. P-Line is great too. Great set up and the larger crappie and smaller bass are a blast. Those 1” power minnows in the jar are panfish candy. I love catching those little fresh water permit. I’m using P-Line CX Premium 6lb. for my river smallmouth. Tough line that casts super and won’t break on every snag. Cheers!

    One of my favorite kind of ways to fish. Panfishing. Using an ultralight/light setup. I can fish for panfish all day long if I wanted to. Some of the easiest ways to fish. You're bound to catch bluegill and redear sunfish anytime, anywhere. Creek fishing is the best in my opinion. Many more species of panfish diversity in creeks. I catch all sorts of sunfish species in my local creeks. So much fun. Thanks for the tips!

    i live in east Tennessee and we have some absolute MONSTER panfish (specifically bluegill but ive seen some huge shellcracker too). I catch em at a local dam on mealworms. Ive done everything from bass to deep sea snapper and shark but its still a blast to catch these little suckers. Great video man!

    • @mswen1983
      @mswen1983 8 років тому +1

      +Michael Minnick I live in Missouri, and the best way to find huge panfish around here is to find private ponds that are underfished- old farmers are a good place to start. Nicer neighborhoods sometimes maintain private lakes or ponds that rarely get fished. At one where my parents lived, I used to catch 15" crappies, mostly on bass lures. As long as you ask for permission, respect the residents, and don't take advantage, they don't usually mind people taking a few fish, esp if you know someone in the neighborhood.

      +Mark S I wanted to use bluegills for bait here in Florida but I can't catch them small enough

    • @mswen1983
      @mswen1983 8 років тому +1

      Ian Easterday
      What are fishing for? I've heard of people using bluegills (and other sunfish, esp. green sunfish) for largemouth bass, striped bass, and catfish. First I'll point out that there are bluegill-imitating lures, some of which are pretty good, and you can always cut them up and use portions of larger bluegills, esp. for catfish. Around here, many bait shops also carry 4"-6" bluegills or green sunfish, but there are a lot of monster blue & flathead cats in this area.
      If you still want to catch your own, I would advise a couple of different options. 1) use tiny hooks (#8-10 & smaller- longer shanks help you unhook deeply hooked fish, without increasing size) and small baits like mealworms, waxworms, and red worms cut into pieces. Go to a heavily fished, public lake and fish of the dock or another easily accessible place, and try fishing off there. Overfishing produces an abundance of smaller, stunted fish. If you throw an insect or a piece of a worm into the water, you can often see these little fish swarm out and grab it.
      2) Get a dip net, and scoop weedy areas near the edges of lakes. I've caught all kinds of creatures doing this, including minnows, baby bluegills (about 1-2" long), crayfish, tadpoles, frogs, salamanders, and aquatic insects like hellgrammites. Just make sure you know the laws, know what you can legally use for bait (bluegills should be fine, but there may be limits on how many per day you can collect), and don't release any species where it might be invasive. Oh, and be careful. I've also caught snakes.

    I got a little panfish setup for Christmas from my wife (lew's laser lite speed spin) and took it out for about an hour. I only hooked into one fish on a beetle spin, but it was a pound and a half or so bass. On that light tackle with four pound test, I promise it was about the most fun I've had landing a fish. I love that little thing. You can fling those light weights out a mile! Just can't recommend a panfishing setup enough, even if I haven't actually landed a panfish yet. :)

    Excellent video from beginning to end! It was nice to see the different ways that you used to catch the various fish. Plus I had not known before that there was a difference between Bluegill and Shell crackers. I always thought they were the same fish. At the end of the video where you showed a simple way to prepare the fish was also fascinating as I did not know they were edible. I am mainly a trout fisherman up in the streams of the mountains of Colorado but occasionally I will go to the reservoirs like Cherry Creek and Chatfield to do some brim, shad, and bluegill fishing. Keep up the great work and I'll be watching for more videos from you in the future. Thanks again and tight lines!

    Hookin' up with a big bluegill on an ultralight with some 1 or 2# line is just as fun of a fight as hookin' up with a large mouth on a med/heavy with 4# (imo). Also, it's _usually_ really good action and _always_ good times and good eatin'!

    Scale them
    Make a cut just behind the top of the head and cut down but not all the way.
    Grasp the head and pull down.
    All the insides come out without touching.
    Ready for the frying pan!

    You should cut them open from the top to bottom so that they are like connected but open and take everything out clean them and fry them all in all with seasoning (with out scales of course) and there is no need to worry too much about bones because they get crispy maybe on the bigger ones but that's fine if you're careful
