I remember when I was a boy, my Southern grandma took us kids to her friend's backyard pond to catch a whole mess of bluegill, then we went back to her house and she fileted them all out with the skin still on. She saved all the tails and fins and fried them up along with the filets. I'll tell you what, I still dream about those fins and tails and how we all fought over them once we tasted them for the first time.

When you see gar on the top water like that the oxygen level in the lake is really low. Just like when the catfish are floating to the top dead. ThE levels are really low. After a while you’ll see carp floating dead as well. The summer heat really depletes the oxygen levels in the waters this time of year.

    Another option:
Growing up Southwestern Colorado our favorite fish to eat was trout and bluegill.
We scaled them (except Brooks), removed entrails and gills (left the heads). If you are squeamish about the head they make a good handle. We had a Dutch oven we would get the oil really hot, spread the fish open so it cooks on the inside and out. In less than a minute they are so crispy you can eat everything.
    Love you stuff.
    Thank you.

Bro, frying up the fish whole like that is a really common Asian method of frying fish. It's super delicious for most species. Just scale it and gut it. Serve a tart, spicy sauce on the side and you're golden! Also, if you make it extra crispy, those fins turn into the best chip you'll ever eat. Great video man.

A friend and I were Bass fishing on Lake Texoma in HiPort Marina. He had borrowed a Rapala minnow, the wooden hand carved type. This was in the 80's. His rod bent and he is squealing like a little girl. It was a tug of war for him and everybody could hear him all over the marina. He says it's coming up and UP it came. It was a HUGE GAR, with my Rapala Minnow between his chompers. Well he just cut the line and I watched my expensive Rapala Minnow swim away. He didn't offer to pay me for it, nor did he bring us any snacks or drinks. He didn't even offer up gas money. He never went fishing with me again. I sure missed my Rapala Minnow. I used to only eat squash fried. But sautéed with zucchini, onion and garlic is where it is at!

Hey i noticed your using your first fishing pole when you were younger thats awesome. I never went fishing when I was younger I never had anyone to take me. I fell in love with fishing on my own and now I can't get enough. But I never tried eating any bass or blue gill or crappie I normally just bought my catfish from HEB.

Use a table spoon for scaling gills much easier! And cut head and gut it last .the spoon helps control the scale flying everywhere as bad .if you are doing a bunch say a hundred or so use your board to hold and a pressure washer and descale in seconds flip do other side place two close together and do two at a time it works well !

one of the things that's helped me in the past is taking a spoon, scoop-side-down, and trying to get underneath the scales that way, working back and forth towards the head kinda like buffing a floor, if that makes sense. supposed to keep scales from flying everywhere

Yeah sunfish are the best to eat, 6 to 9 inches are the best eaters. I like to use dried mashed potato mix for breading, it turns golden brown and is amazing!

I tried bluegill the other day and it's so delicious. I couldn't believe I liked fishing for these things but it's so fun. I'm trying your frying recipe with texas pete.

Dude love the gills, just a suggestion. If you score them on both sides it will get the batter down all the way to the bones and you can pick the meat off in chunks with very little bones if any in the meat. My grandkids loves them that way. Keep safe and keep fishing!

Out here in California we fry the whole thing and make what i call " fish chicharon tacos " and the head and tail is the best ! Yummy! We lower our heat and fry extra well done......just shy of burning them, same thing goes for my Asian fishing buddy and my Mexican and Californios like myself, we smoke our crappies, carp, trout, catfish and oven bake our strippers bass, being married to a Chinese girl, she steams her fish then applies hot oil over the top and violla! All yummy! We even fry our fish like you folks in the south........it's all good!

Spoon works incredibly well for scalling. Also if you cut a slit down the lateral line it makes the back meat peal off really easily.

The tail is really good. Watch how far up you bite though. Bite around the narrow section. Any closer to the body and you'll get bones. I was recently told how good bluegill was including the tail and I must say at 42 boy have I been missing out!!!

Nobody should ever underestimate the ability of a water bobber and a fly. It’s easily my favorite thing to catch bluegill. That and bluegill fishing is extremely underrated nowadays and just hate it. They’ll hit anything that they can see. Period
