Carp fishing is awesome. I only do it a few weeks in the spring before I get into saltwater fishing. Good video you did. I've caught carp up to 30 lbs and lost a couple up to 60lbs and consider them to be an awesome sport fish. A person should never kill a fish they won't eat. A common carp produces around 300,000 eggs per spawn, yet the populations seldom change. All those little babies provide food for bream, bass, crappie, etc.
You've got a knack for teaching, Nick! Thanks for another great instructional. BTW, some people would beg to differ about carp being suitable table fare, providing you learn how to fillet and prepare them!
Very informative Video as are all you produce. Thanks! In Europe, carp grow up to 35 kilos / 77 lbs. Nobody ever keeps them: strictly no kill. But carp are considered great gamefish. Pound for pound, they'll give you the best fight you can expect. A piece of advice, when waiting for a bite, keep your break loose: the fish won't feel le weight of the line and won't spit the bait out. Then you tighten your drag as you pick up your rod. You can also catch carp on a fly rod!
Nice vid, great info here. I'm a true multispecies fisherman but have never really delved into carp. Had a 30 lb one take my bait and tow my canoe before snapping my line while bass fishing awhile back and I've been curious ever since
Good question, I found them in a tackle shop in Sacramento CA a couple of years back. Most work fine just look for one that will prevent the rod from sliding out.
I was just wondering what rod holders those are, I would like to get some myself. Love the videos great for an inexperienced angler looking to catch something new.
I think he is using the treble so there are more chances for the fish to hook itself when it sucks the bait up and then tries to spit it back out. A super super sharp size #10 treble is killer on carp, but you have to be very mindful of your rods so the fish don't swallow it. Those little trebles are so sticky sharp that they will hook the fish when he sucks up the bait, so usually no gut hooked fish.. but always a chance if you come across a really hungry dumb one.
I never go weightless. My local river (st. Joe river) in northern Indiana had MONSTER carp!!! I've noticed that if I use 1/2oz or 3/4oz tear drop sinker, they do detect the weight, but never drop the corn.. they just bolt off QUICK! which in turn, hook themselves.
ive been trying to hook & land a Carp on a fly rod since 2013, in April i hooked & landed a 28 incher to my dismay I'd foul hooked it! they are an extremely smart fish, they're brawny & powerful, an excellent game fish. My flyrod pursuit continues...
a quick tip if you are fishing in very heavy thick weeds that engulf the rest of the water, just either find a clearing or if you can't use heavy weights with slack line and a light or floating bait if possible so that the Carp can still find it within the grass because since the line is slacked your bait floats freely and the carp won't feel the weight instead it will just take out line. Also a good bait to use is a mix of jello and drained corn mixed with panko or cubed bread and crushed kix cereal
Love your channel and every single technique you share with us boss and i would like to thank you for that. Just one question.. Why do you say carp has a bad taste? Carp is eating everywhere around the world as a excellent plate and i have seen that only the U.S. don't eat them. There is many ways to cook them specialty in Europe is a very delicate dish even a traditional Christmas food as well. Yes it's true they are the master of carp fishing but is also a good eaten dish if it's cook properly. I as a personal experience can recomend smoked as the best so far i have taste.. Thumbs up and keep the great work that you have been doing boss.
TheSlightlyHomosexualFeminist thanks for the info. I wonder why the bad taste? If it would be some in their diet or something in the water or something. I remember as a kid at least I'm from Costa Rica and I cannot remember a bad carp taste. My family is from 2 different European countries and they as well said actually fried taste good. Of course there is other fish that taste better i guess is just like animal meat it depends on their diet it will be the taste of the meat I remember that a animal that feeds on fruits will taste 1000 times better than one that feeds on other animals... but thanks for the reply.
treble hook seems a wee bit over kill they will also be no good for the fish if its deep hooked, dont know if im a lil ignorant or something but is carp fishing a completely new thing in america?
was wondering what you guys were fishing for out there on monday, now i know! went to school at lincoln, hung out with friends back there in the residential circle (1st spot), live down the way, but never fished that slough. will have to now.
i use a light weight rod and 6 pound test. I've caught carp up to 13 pounds but if the carp are any bigger id totally switch to a medium rod with 10lb test. make sure your drag is set correctly because they will take off. But my set up is pretty much like this but i use a small weight with a hole (so it stays at the bottom and when the carp take it they don't feel any weight since the line slides easily) and then swivel and then about 1 foot of 6 pound line (they don't see the line and if i get a snag it is easier to break) with regular size 6 hook. another method is the hollow weight then 3 way swivel with a foot of 6 lb test then the hook on each of the other swivels.
I have never found carp to be difficult to catch, or to be hook shy, or sinker shy. I have no clue how many carp I've caught, but the number would be pretty big. I've found the main thing is just putting out the right bait, and using the right size hook. I'd never use treble hooks for carp, and all you need on a number six hook is a single kernel of corn. In Europe, the hook is usually left bare, and the bait either goes on a hair rig, or above the hook in a bait holder. Like many other serious carp fisherman, I have my own favorite homemade dough ball that I keep secret.. You can also now buy boilies here, or you can make your own. Carp love sweets, too, and you can catch them using all sorts of candy. But my dough ball gives me the most bites, day in and day out. And carp are not strictly bottom feeders. They do bite on the bottom, but they also bite at every depth, and even on the surface. If you don't carp fish, you have no idea what you're missing.
The thing about carp strategies is that a majority of carps are in ponds (or small lakes). And from a lot of experience with other types of fish in ponds: Pond fish are WEIRD. You can fish one pond very well with bait X and not catch a single thing in a pond right next to it with bait X. This is why there are so many preferred versions on what will or will not catch a certain fish.
Excellent VID! Some really good Tips. Thank you. I Love your bank sticks, Have'nt seen them over here (the other side of the pond). Keep up the good work and "Tight Lines!"
Great video I am cat man but my wife recently caught a very large carp in a farm pond. When I tried to net the fish, the fish splashed me in the face danced on top of the water pulling so hard that 10 LB mono was snapped cleanly in half.. I AM A BELIEVER one of the strongest freshwater fish pound for pound I have dealt with!
Fisherman will learn. Actually carp are amongst the best gamefish around, pound for pound. What your video demonstrates is you don't need the high-end carp-fishing gear people use here in Europe. And when I say "high-end", I mean expensive! Carp-fishing is fun and anybody can go after them and enjoy themselves. Again, thanks for a very fine video, as are all your vids posted here on the Tube!
Carp actually tend to have soft and small mouths, which is why even lifting them with fish grips isn't suggested. Remember the carp is like a giant catfish. This is why you can't fight carp too hard, or the hook can rip out. You have to rely on only using moderate force and making it tired, then bringing it it. However for other fish species with bigger mouths, especially predators, you can pull with massive force and you won't rip their mouth. If you have a fish species with a strong and large mouth, and you have strong line, you can indeed pull against it's force and use brute force to bring it in, as long as you have a strong enough rod.
Great in-depth, informative, and thorough video man! When you place the rod in the rod holder do you leave the spool open or on a light drag. Just wondering if you let the drag tension set the hook, or you set it when you pick up the rod. Thanks and keep up the great work!
I accidentally stumbled upon some spawning river carp today, didnt have any corn, but surprisingly enough was snagging them on an orange rattle trap and a gold spoon! Im gonna take some corn out there tmrw and see what i can find!! Thanks man
I snagged a nice 15lb or so carp on a rattle trap with 6lb line by the tail a few days back. had no idea they were even in that small pond. Hell of a fight. didn't think my line would hold but it did
Dude you're the first guy that actually is informative. Thanks a lot from Canada where our Carp scene is very new! Trying anything to catch these illusive fuckers!
Really enjoyable vid, just a suggestion, trebles anrt great for the carp's mouth and can cause tearing in the soft flesh. Where we fish in europe, is, like you mentioned, a completely different culture and style of fishing, but the target is the same species, and I'm aware that certain hook patterns can be quite damaging. Well done with that koi, lovely fish from such a small river. beauty!
Carp are actually very edible. The key is to trim away belly fat, trim out the blood line and any dark meat from the fillet much like catfish. Better fried than most other ways I have tried. Meat is actually pretty firm and has a good taste. The US is one of the only countries that doesn't eat carp.
I have heard carp is a mild tasteing fish and have heard its good! I believe we just think its bad because we never eat it and just assume it is because its a bottom feeder and because most people assume its bad that roomer has been around for a while! But remember eat carp only out of clean water and remove the mud vein!
I don't know why many fishermen dislike carp. They are fun to catch. What fisherman hates to fish? I love fishing, and I'll take whatever I can catch, including carp. I just caught a 12 pounder on 6lb line.
carp taste good if you know how to prepare them. i used to fish in lake beryessa for lake trout. lots of fun, too.... got drunk once in stockton....never fished there though!
nice video bruh. I'm from Panamá and there are lots of lakes with tilapia in here. do you have any video on how to catch them? or can you recommend me one? thanks. I just suscribed.
I usually fish from shore. So I would throw a whole can or two of corn out where I want to cast. Chumming the area with corn a day in advance. I have caught countless amounts of carp. Hundreds over 10 pounds. Many approaching 20 pounds. In small streams, ponds, large lakes and large rivers. Always with an egg sinker and a split shot so the line slips through.
I'm a american I love using the hair rig it's more of a hobby of mine to make my rigs and put them to the test the hair rig is much easier to get out of the lip and if you use a barbless it's much easier
there are grass carp in an area that i live in. But the turtles are there too. How ca you keep your line down and ot get a turtle hooked? Any suggestions? Are these grass carp?
Help Me please ! I am from Manipur, a north eastern state of India. Watching your videos, I love the way you catch carbs. So I decided to change myself from a traditional angler to your kind of fishing(western). So, I learn hair rig, Bought meathod feeder from online store, use corn, but, I never get a bite. But my fellow anglers using multiple hooks with traditional baiting styles using ant's egg in thier bait recipe catches much more than me. Can anyone help me please?
love the videos. its nice to see the more common fish.,cats, carp, panfish get highlighted for once. i know some love treble hooks but i rarely use them for anything as theyre just a pain. those carp are good eating by the way, dressing them is kinda a pain in the butt.
I don't really like using sweet corn from the can for the carp near a river I live by because I always got the small ones.so what I did is I cut corn off of the cob and turned it up to high.then I mixed in a lot of salt, sugar, and a secret ingredient. then for the setup I use 7lb mono with a tiny split shot.i saw size improvements almost immediately. other good baits off the top of my head are hemp seeds (cooked down to get on hook) and tiger nuts (also cooked)
I've heard carp is a good eating fish and is mild tasteing..they were brought over to the US by the europeans as a food fish. .i definatly would like to try it and see if it really is as good as they say! But if u catch them near a golf course i suggest u don't eat any fish near a golf course because of chemicals they use to treat the grass could get washed into the lake when it rains! Also carp have a mud vein that you have to remove and I've heard if u bust it while its still in the fish as you fillet it the meat is spoiled!
Thanks for the info....didnt think about carp when ive seen bubble trails. Always figure it was turtles and didnt pay much attention. There are a couple carp and koi in a small lake I bass fish at and I have always wanted to hook into one of these fat fish. I will have to keep a can of corn on hand whenever i go fishing just in case they are actively feeding in the shallows.
Hi! Can you tell us about the gear tha you are using , pole and reels , By the way I was introduce to carp soup last week and it was very good. Thanks.
I'm visiting Colorado and fishing with my son. We are beginners. :) We can see a lot of huge carp in the lake but we are having a very hard time catching them. What is the best time to fish for them? What kind of bait do they like most? I caught one with a minnow yesterday but it was so big my line snapped. We also tried some sweet corn and corn flavored carp bait but not a single bite.
I grew up by a golf course so we fished their pond all the time. First time I ever saw a carp we thought it was an anaconda. It had to have been 3 ft long. Huge. Sitting with it head at the bank and we walked up it turned and splashed. We were kids so we booked it out of there.
I like you're method better. Those Britts get way to into the carp fishing thing. I'm going tomorrow morning. Hope I end up with a video to post. I'll be fishing the Gila River in Az.
carp do taste bad but man the fight they give and on top of that they are very abundant I used to dislike carp until I finally realized the greatness of this fish they are now my favorite And for those of you calling carp a garbage fish answer me this if it was truly a garbage fish then why can it survive and flourish in places bass and trout cant..SURVIVOR FISH
Nice to see a bass fisherman go out and have fun catching carp!
Carp fishing is awesome. I only do it a few weeks in the spring before I get into saltwater fishing. Good video you did. I have a question do we not even have to set the hook?

Awesome!
Tow my canoe. Lmao.
you act like you caught the fish and weighed it to tell it was 30 lbs
and if you have never caught one how should you know what a 30lb carp is to look like... you don't accidently hook Into a 30lb carp
Awe it's ok buddy keep trying, you'll catch one! :)
I love how connected you are to the land and nature
Good question, I found them in a tackle shop in Sacramento CA a couple of years back. Most work fine just look for one that will prevent the rod from sliding out.
By the way InformativeFisherman, this was a great video!! Thanks very much for showing how much fun you can have catching carp!
I fish this same way with an Ultra Light setup and 10lb braid. It is really a challenge.
I was just wondering what rod holders those are, I would like to get some myself. Love the videos great for an inexperienced angler looking to catch something new.
I hate treble hooks. They are okay for crank baits and bass fishing. Not so good for getting out of a carp or catfish mouth.
+Bryan Breitenstein I would recommend a small circle hook. Most are biodegradable and will dissolve in a fishes stomach in a couple weeks.
Yeah me and my friend went carp fishing for the first time and each of the three hooks were stuck in his mouth...nightmare to get out
I use either circle hooks or a Kahle style hook. And I prefer to Snell these hooks to the line...I feel they tend to work better that way.
Crimp the barbs down.
I think he is using the treble so there are more chances for the fish to hook itself when it sucks the bait up and then tries to spit it back out. Good job here in Vegas we have quite a few urban ponds that have big carp they're a blast to catch good info
ive been trying to hook & land a Carp on a fly rod since 2013, in April i hooked & landed a 28 incher to my dismay I'd foul hooked it! they are an extremely smart fish, they're brawny & powerful, an excellent game fish. My flyrod pursuit continues...

Awesome!

For the sake of the video I did not want to lose them but good point, thanks. Make sure to like us on FB theinformativefisherman
Yes it was, everywhere on the delta is good for carp, so have fun!
a quick tip if you are fishing in very heavy thick weeds that engulf the rest of the water, just either find a clearing or if you can't use heavy weights with slack line and a light or floating bait if possible so that the Carp can still find it within the grass because since the line is slacked your bait floats freely and the carp won't feel the weight instead it will just take out line.

Nice vid Nick ! Was that an Abu Garcia vendetta that u were using when u caught the first fish ?
I love fishing for carp that's the best fish to fish for I always use corn it gets them all the time just try it for yourself
Yeah I noticed the same thing in the rivers they do not mind the weight as much.
They aren't Leary at all. I use a size 4 treble on 50 pound braid with a 2 ounce weight. With an 8 foot rod we reel in 30 pounders all day
exelent thanks 4 vidio
Excellent VID! Some really good Tips. Thank you. I Love your bank sticks, Have'nt seen them over here (the other side of the pond). Keep up the good work and "Tight Lines!"

when that beat dropped, I subscribed instantly lol
I didn't even hear when the beat dropped but this comment made my day lol
The best fishing video I've ever seen.
I just lost one about a week ago on a elkhair caddis! Also fish for fly fishing! Carp deserve more respect in the USA, they are a true challenge!
Great in-depth, informative, and thorough video man! When you place the rod in the rod holder do you leave the spool open or on a light drag. Just wondering if you let the drag tension set the hook, or you set it when you pick up the rod. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Yeah I set the drag real light to let them run, I leave a good amount of slack in the line.
Hey Nick, I am new to fishing this area. Thanks for all the tips :) I am located in Elk Grove so this has been helpful to our area :)
Elk Grove CA?
I accidentally stumbled upon some spawning river carp today, didnt have any corn, but surprisingly enough was snagging them on an orange rattle trap and a gold spoon!
Im gonna take some corn out there tmrw and see what i can find!!
Thanks man
I was a die hard bass fisherman until I tried some proper carp fishing and now is all I go for and dream of that 20 lber
Brian is the star of this show. - GO BRIAN!!!

just had some at a local eatery yesterday. fillet then score they are a staple at fish fries around here.
Where do you live?
illinois
brad gillis Only scroungers eat Carp. Carp have Souls and should be released always. Very bad Karma to kill, and or eat a Carp
I caught a 12 lb yesterday great info
I was going off of what I have heard my whole life lol, Never personally tried any how did you cook it?
I'm planning on it now, thank you!
The fight is epic, do it!
lol haha that was really fun to watch awesome video
Nick, thank you for the nice set of videos you've put up. Does this rig also work at night? Best time of year around the San Joaquin Delta sloughs?
Your welcome, I catch them year round here in Northern CA. Night time is even better!

Ego S2 by adventure products, tell them you seen it on my show if you don't mind :)
I'm fishing in a stocked pond. I can't seem to get a carp to bite. Do u think they could be more shy because they are overfished?
I'm visiting Colorado and fishing with my son. We are beginners. :) We can see a lot of huge carp in the lake but we are having a very hard time catching them. What is the best time to fish for them? What kind of bait do they like most? I caught one with a minnow yesterday but it was so big my line snapped. We also tried some sweet corn and corn flavored carp bait but not a single bite.
Get some white bread
Pack the bread on a treble hook or a gold hook by eagle claw
Nice video you guys need to take a trip to hopdale Louisiana in get you some red fish in speckled trout great fighting fish really fun
I agree!
Nice video and nice fish!
Would the outcome be as good with regular corn or will I get more bites with the sweet corn?
where'd you get those rod holders?
I grew up by a golf course so we fished their pond all the time. First time I ever saw a carp we thought it was an anaconda. It had to have been 3 ft long. Huge. Sitting with it head at the bank and we walked up it turned and splashed. We were kids so we booked it out of there.
I love all fishing brother!
I like you're method better. Those Britts get way to into the carp fishing thing. I'm going tomorrow morning. Hope I end up with a video to post. I'll be fishing the Gila River in Az.
Ye and we catch a lot try that rig on fen Drayton or wraysbury blank, blank lol
Can I just use a regular hook?
I always use fresh bread Carp love it big time.....make sure bread tight into ball that stay in hook...
How did you learn all of this?
I appreciate it very much!
carp do taste bad but man the fight they give and on top of that they are very abundant I used to dislike carp until I finally realized the greatness of this fish they are now my favorite And for those of you calling carp a garbage fish answer me this if it was truly a garbage fish then why can it survive and flourish in places bass and trout cant..SURVIVOR FISH
Great video.
What brand of net is that? It's pretty sweet.
That's a nice area what's the name of that golf course in the background?

Are you placing that corn and you baited hook close to the bank in the middle or both with two rods?
caught many carp on a 6ft fiberglass rod, zebco 202 #10 mono, #6 snelled eagle claw, split shot and canned corn.
Where did you get your rod holders? Can't seem to find any tall ones like those online.
