Agree with the other comment: this is MUCH easier than the "proper" way, which is to dismantle the motor cover and get at it from the top, thanks.
Just one additional tip: like the original poster, I had a problem at first because the belt slipped off the narrow drive pulley while I was trying to push it over the wider, blade-bearing shaft. But there is an easy way!
Wearing appropriately heavy gloves, once you have the new belt over the narrow drive pulley, screw the blade back into place on the wider blade shaft. Then, while pressing the new belt down far enough to keep it on the drive pulley with one hand, use the other hand to simply wind the wider blade shaft a bit at a time, using the blade itself like a wrench to move it around. It is much easier, using the blade as a lever, rather than trying to turn the blade shaft by finger power alone.
