    This just happened to us. We booked the underground Colosseum tour six months in advance, but the tour company contacted us a couple months before the tour to say it might be changed or cancelled. A week before the trip, it got cancelled and they asked us for alternate dates and times. At the very last minute they confirmed we would get the Gladiator's entrance tour for the same day/time. This was done thru a tour company, BTW.

      Ugh - sorry about this. It's what I mean, they will try to offer you the best thing they can get for you. Tour companies are the ones trying to get tickets, and they are the ones who sometimes can't. That's what I meant when I said Viator, Get Your Guide, and Tiqets have nothing to do with it, as they are just a booking site listing various offerings from tour companies. So in the end, it's the tour companies who sometimes are unable to fulfil their commitment to their clients, because they just can't get the tickets from CoopCulture. I'm glad you will get to see the Colosseum at least! Hope it's a great visit.

    Love your channel. Solid information and I'll just say the information you put out works for me. So many video blogs of couples showing me how much fun they have when I just really want the information on the place or area. I'm Subscribed. Visiting in September. We booked through City Walks and I emailed them a few days ago about all these complaints I'm seeing. They say most are going off without a hitch but sometimes it's out of their control. My guess is it's like rental car reviews. So many negative reviews but most of them do a great job. Thanks for all your input.

      You are right, really most tours are going just fine, but for those who get their tour cancelled, it can be a really awful experience, especially if this is a once in a lifetime vacation to Rome.
      In recent days, a news story broke that the Italian government is looking into the problem and I hope they will do something about it. You can read it here:

    Thank you so much for this and all of your incredibly helpful Rome videos. We've watched all of them in preparation for our upcoming visit at the end of September and have found them to be most informative. This video, in particular, solved a week's long issue we've been having with booking a visit to the Coliseum. We had booked a full experience tour, but at an exorbitant price and it didn't even include the 24-hour access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill we were hoping for. After watching this video and seeing the likelihood of it being canceled, we did the canceling ourselves and rebooked for the general Coliseum/Roman Forum/Palatine Hill and Mammertine Prison self-guided tour through your link to Tiqets and were grateful not only for the tip, but also for the 5% discount we received. Now we can put the finishing touches calmly and with more confidence. Many, many thanks!

    Hi!:) I'm very glad I found your channel and found a lot of useful information in the last few days!😍Unfortunately we started looking for tickets late and have not found anything for our trip next week. It's not clear to me if you can get a separate "ticket" in the morning with the Roma pass or not. You mentioned in your previous video that now only online possibe? Thanks a lot! 🤗

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  11 місяців тому +2

      Thanks for watching! Yes, when I made my previous video, you could only buy tickets online. But as I mentioned in this updated video, as of this May, you can go stand in line to get tickets.
      If you have a Roma Pass, you are entitled to a "free" ticket but you still have to book. Here is the link to book with the Roma Pass with CoopCulture online:
      ecm.coopculture.it/index.php?option=com_snapp&view=products&catalogid=E0085161-9454-E5EE-44D2-017448FAA618&snappTemplate=template3&lang=en&cartSessionId=
      If you cannot find availability for your dates, you can go to the ticket booths and wait there to get your free ticket. But you cannot just walk into the Colosseum with the Roma Pass. You must get your timed ticket. Good luck!

    So glad I stumbled on your video. I had booked Colosseum underground tickets through a tour agency in early June for a Sept 28 tour. As soon as the tickets were released by Coopculture, I got the dreaded email that my tour was canceled. They gave me the alternative of a later tour, but with no Arena floor or underground. Bummed, but I accepted it. After seeing your video, I went straight to Tiqets and was able to book the full experience with the arena floor and underground tour. Got instant confirmation along with etickets with QR code. Since it's less than 30 days out, hopefully this means they actually have the tickets in hand and we won't get canceled at the last minute. Holding onto the other tickets for the time being just in case. I have 24 hours before the tour to cancel.

    We just came back from Rome last week. It was an impromptu decision to go to Colloseum that day. We arrived around noon, we queued for about 20 minutes to buy tickets. We paid a total of EUR 34.00 for 3 persons. I think, my son who is 17 didn't have to pay anything. I asked if a student gets a discount? The cashier at the booth asked for a student ID or a passport to prove his age.
    It was a timed ticket. We were told that we can enter the Colloseum at 3:15 PM and the Palatine after 6 PM. So we went out for a lunch and came back.

      Yes, you are lucky. Rome has gotten even busier since 2021. In fact, 2021 was a very quiet year for tourism in Rome, because we still had a lot of restrictions between masks and Green Passes, so when you were here, it was surely pretty uncrowded.

    So much amazing information. Thank you. I’m wondering how far ahead to book with the third party sites such as tiqets, viator, or GYG? I realize it may be canceled but seems like a risk we just have to take. Again thank you for the very helpful information

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for watching! Well, you can book almost as far in advance as you like when you use a third party (please note you get a 5% discount when you book with Tiqets when you use the link and discount code I've provided in the description!)
      Booking in advance neither helps nor hurts your chances of your tour being cancelled. No one tour company or agency is better about this than another. It's simply something like a lottery. The chances are that you WILL get your tour, but there is just no guarantee when demand is higher than the supply.

    Thank you so much for this video! I’ve been watching the official tickets and have only seen availability once. I can’t believe how yours have access to these tickets over direct purchase from consumers, but I suppose it creates jobs so I doubt much will be done. One thing I did want to ask: if you do manage to book through the official site, are those tickets “skip the line” OR is that only for resellers/tours?

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  11 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for watching and I'm glad you find the video helpful.
      All tickets are "skip the line", because you do not buy tickets inside the Colosseum now. The lines you see are for security and everyone has to go through that.
      So yes, online tickets allow you to "skip the line" for purchasing tickets, like the one I showed in this video, but you should give yourself about 15-20 minutes to get through security.

    The day before visiting the colosseum on the 24 hour pass (in early June) we received an email from viator saying: Because of the busy period of holidays in Italy we received too many reservations. We ask you to please show up [early] tomorrow… in order to make the ticket redeeming and the access to the colosseum as smooth as possible. We showed up a little early and fortunately, we got in.
    We also booked the underground tour at night directly with co-op culture. Because the English tours were not available, we booked the Italian tour. Non c’era problema. I noticed that some people in the tour were using a Google dictation app which allowed them to understand what the guide was saying.

      Thanks a lot for watching. As I mentioned, the underground is extremely difficult to get because it's so popular but demand is very high and there are just not enough spots available to meet all the demand. Add to that that September and October are the two busiest months of the year in Rome, and demand is even higher.

      Didactic means you will have a guide. A single ticket means you can buy a ticket and you don't have to buy a package for a whole group. It just means you can buy a ticket and join an existing tour.

    Hi Elyssa! If I book an Italian or Spanish full experience tour (which I believe includes the underground), can I ditch the tour and explore on my own pace? Or at least do the tour and reenter the underground on my own? These tours seem much more available than the English tour and the self-guided tickets! Also, would the CoopCulture call center have better inventory? Thank you! I'm loving your channel and have subscribed!

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for watching my videos and for subscribing! Yes, it's true, the underground tours have more availability in languages other than English, since English is the one with the most demand. However, no, you cannot ditch the tour. But the way it works is that you will be escorted to the underground and given the tour, which you must stay on. Nobody can wander around the underground on their own.
      But after the underground, they take you to the arena floor and then from there you are free to explore the normal parts of the colosseum on your own.
      The call centre has the same availability as the online system so there is no benefit to calling vs. using the online system.

    • @JupiterZebra
      @JupiterZebra 9 місяців тому

      @@Romewise Thank you so much for the reply, Alyssa! This is extremely helpful. You said "nobody can wander around the underground on their own" and I found this interesting. I didn't know this but you're definitely right! Coopculture described it as an "accompanied visit to the Underground". Is this underground visit timed? I assume the company would be a staff member who simply follows you around, not a tour guide who talks?
      I was lucky enough to have purchased the Italian tour for the perfect date/time and plan to keep it. My plan is to purchase an official audio guide on site, stay in the back for the underground tour so I could listen to the audio guide, and ditch the tour as we get to the arena floor. Would that work? Also, Can I re-enter the arena without a tour guide?
      Thanks again, Alyssa!

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  9 місяців тому +1

      @@JupiterZebra Yes that's correct. The visit is timed. There is a huge demand and not enough time slots to meet the demand so they keep the visits moving. You will have maybe a half hour in the underground. It's mostly accompanied but you are also given enough freedom to linger back a little bit and take photos. But you cannot just stay down there as long as you like, as the next group will be coming along. You also cannot re-enter the underground or arena once you leave them. But you can stay inside the regular areas of the Colosseum as long as you like until closing time.

    Question. Going to Rome the first time in July. Taking a couple of tour guides do you need to tip the guides and how much?

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  11 місяців тому +1

      Tipping is not necessary but always appreciated. How much you tip, if you do tip, is up to you, but you could base it on how much you liked the tour and how big the group is.
      If you're on a group tour and want to tip, 5-10 Euros per person is probably a good amount.
      If you're on a private tour, it may depend on how you booked the guide. If you booked with them directly and are already paying them well, you may not need to tip beyond what you paid for the tour. If you booked through an agency, they are not getting the full amount of what you paid, so you could tip 20-25 Euros per person if you are going to tip, i.e. if they did a great job.

There are only tickets for the afternoon left, but since the full experience ticket is valid for 48h, I wanted to confirm if I could just change the order and go to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill in the morning and then go to the Colosseum at the time booked in the afternoon (or is the ticket only valid AFTER the time of my Colosseum booked visit?). Please note there is no re-entry so once you go inside the Roman Forum / Palatine Hill, you won't be able to leave and come back. So make sure you have a food plan and know how long you want to stay. So is Coop Culture currently not selling tickets to the colosseum? Or is it just selling out too fast. I will be there in October but every time I check the site all the days from 30 days onward are always red. Even 3rd party sites are not selling tickets to the colosseum unless it has a tour guide added to it but these cost over $100 per person

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  8 місяців тому +1

      Yes, CoopCulture is selling tickets to the Colosseum. But as I mentioned, there is a huge demand and limited supply. Also they only sell tickets for the next 30 days.
      If you are looking for regular entry tickets, you will find more availability more easily. Arena tickets are a bit harder to get but also possible if you keep checking and are patient. Underground and night tour tickets are extremely hard to get because they have the least supply and the most demand.
      And, if you are coming in September/October, these are peak season months so demand is higher than in other months.
      Third party sites are no longer allowed to sell just the tickets so they have to bundle them with something which is why you are seeing those higher prices.

    Yup! I booked a July Underground Tour several months ago with the help of your amazing videos. Got the email last week that the underground is cancelled and we would now be getting the Gladiators Gate Entrance tour. So FRUSTRATING! Here's what we got from our tour company where they blame Coopculture: Parco Archeologico :
    "This decision is a result of much careful thought. It was one of our first tours ever offered and one of the first “special access” tours we introduced in 2014. The tour has won awards and mentions and has given us great satisfaction.
    The choice is dictated by a series of insurmountable difficulties imposed by surprising, astonishing and illogical daily new regulations dictated by Coopculture and the Parco Archeologico. These erratic regulation changes began in mid-2022 and made it increasingly difficult for tour operators, their clients and guides to access the monument and underground in a fair and equitable manner.
    Over the last 12 months, with every new and nonsensical regulation imposed, we rolled up our sleeves and worked with what we had. We worked hard to adapt to the growing challenges, often wasting hours and days making endless modifications to our clients and guides schedule in an effort to adapt to changes that seemed to favor large corporations utilizing bots while restricting access of guides and clients even with valid tickets in hand. What’s more, these unfair and often contradictory regulations are imposed without transparency, and come at the cost of our clients' satisfaction, tranquility, not to mention our guide's patience."

    Is thus just happening at museums or everything Viator?

    Hello I am trying to book train tickets in Italy for the month or Christmas. The prices for the month of December is very costly even when compared to some ticket next week. Is this normal behaviour or there is something wrong I am doing?

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  9 місяців тому

      Right now it may be too early to book for Christmas. But Christmas is a very busy travel time in Italy as Italian families as well as tourists will be travelling. So you may simply be coming across popular dates. You might try to change your dates to see if you can find lower fares.

      Hey, The prices do drop a bit but on the day prior to christmas trip from florence to rome is costing 50 Euro so extremely costly. 1 more thing I am seeing is that after 10 Dec 2023 there are no trains to and from Lake Como. Something expected here?

    This hspened to us also. Booked via Viator and it got cancelled at last minute. Now we dont even know if we will get refund or not. Viator is horrible we spend 78 euros and just one day in advance they cancelled. And refund also seems doggy.

    How likely are they to cancel tickets in late November?

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  10 місяців тому

      Well, as I said, the further out you are booking, the most likely the company may not be able to get tickets. That said, while early November is still pretty busy in Rome, late November starts to quiet a bit (or use to anyway), so it's possible there will not be the same situation of supply and demand.
      Also, this article just came out - maybe there is some hope things will change!

    It happened to us, luckily we found somewhere else, we booked in advance 2 or 3 weeks before those tickets, had the visit planned for the 3rd day of our stay, and the previous day before the visit at nighttime they let us know!!! 😲 I was like, no way! Thanks to my wife, she is an O.G right, so she handled the situation like a Pro and found us a couple of tickets. And like you said Rome was packed to the max, not really a enjoyable delightful experience overall, everything felt like if it was rushed (Vatican Museum) like sardins in a can and the queues were ridiculous 😯😵‍💫😵.
    Everything in Rome is beautiful, the history behind it, the good people, the architecture and the art. But unless it goes a little "out of fashion" and less over crowded for sure I won't be going back anytime soon 😢.
    Italy treated us well, thanks ❤️🙏🏻
