Another great video. People don't believe me when I say there is so much to see in Rome that is free. You just have to take a little walk beyond the usual suspects.
Thanks a lot Lorna! Yes, what I did on this video was all free (except for the pastries!), I didn't even mention that! But you are right, it's another wonderful aspect of this walk (and so many sights in Rome!)

I stayed in that area first time I came to Rome and my first sighting of the Colosseum was as I walked through that same park, never forget it as long as I live. Super video 👍🏻
Thank you for sharing your experience! Yes, it's quite a moment to come across these Roman monuments when you see them for the first time. Even after living more than 20 years in Rome, I am always gobsmacked each time I see the Pantheon! It never ever gets old!
The Basilica of Saint Praxedes is something I once stumbled across just as services were finishing. Quite touching and beautiful to see it as a living institution, not "just" an important work of art and architecture.
I walked into Santa Maria Maggiore at 10am on a Sunday, completely unawares of the service that was beginning. It was quite beautiful and emotional. I recommend visiting all the Papal Basilicas in Rome.
I agree, services here are truly beautiful. I love the singing and the way the acoustics carry it. You are also right that all the Papal basilicas in Rome are worth visiting! Thanks for sharing your experience!
Thank You so much for all of your videos. I chose to walk to my accommodations in the Colosseum area. After a long flight I was energized to find the spots you highlighted. I only had about 30 hrs in Rome; considering the crowds at the Colosseum and the Forum, I took some great photos and headed to another part of the city that you described in a video, Largo do Torre Argentina. They didn’t build Rome in a day so you can’t see it in a day. I’m looking forward to coming back and using your video guides.
Thank you for sharing your experience! I'm so glad you enjoyed this beautiful walk and saw some of the places I recommend. I hope you had a wonderful visit to Rome!
Thank you so much for sharing all of this information! I’m planning a trip with my family during June 2025 and have two 6 year olds ones and your videos give me a better idea on how to explore Rome!
@@smon7224 I'm getting a lot of questions about this and will probably make a video about this topic. Please remember that the Jubilee lasts the entire year. There is not one specific date or even date range during the Jubilee that is more important than others, with the possible exception of the opening (December 24) and closing of the Jubilee (December.) They expect about 5 million pilgrims to attend but again, over the course of the whole year. Also, many pilgrims coming for the Jubilee will stay in religious housing, and/or at hotels that can accommodate large groups which are often outside the city center. So while nobody can predict the future, my feeling is that the Jubilee will not impact regular tourism all that much. Rome has been super crowded since mid-2022, and I expect it to stay this way into the near future, Jubilee or no Jubilee. Personally, I would not put off coming to Rome for this reason - Carpe Diem!
Thanks for more great information. I wasn’t sure which way to walk to the colosseum from the royal Marcella hotel but after watching your video I think I’ll take a little detour and take this route. I’m definitely looking at going to the Domus aurea too, hopefully I’ll be able to buy tickets for this when they’re on sale 🤞
Thanks so much for watching and for your kind comments. I hope you'll try this walk and come back and let us know here in the comments what you thought about it! And definitely visit the Domus Aurea if you can. It's an amazing site!
Just loving the sight of bits that I remember from my too-brief visits! Trivia: The senior Roman politicians were assigned a set number of 'lictors' depending on their rank; for instance, the legates were assigned five. These were both indicators of the rank *and* bodyguards. It was the lictors that carried the fasces - an axe bound with wooden rods by a rope. These were both badges *and* weapons as, in extreme emergency, the rope could be pulled off and the bodyguard was armed with a very sharp axe!
Thanks so much for watching and for sharing that fanastic bit of history with us! I love details like this and they are so helpful and important for understanding Ancient Rome!
Thank you for this. We arrive from Florence on Thursday, unfortunately late at night and were told by the Hotel Mecenate to not do that walk at night, so we will be taking a cab. We will walk from the hotel to Colosseum the next day.
