Yes but also, "Rome is like an old woman who charges money to look at her grandmother's corpse" (James Joyce, who was robbed there).
@@37Dionysos but the money is worth. I appreciate her grandmother's world.
Well said!

10:20: "Ancient Romans, whose taste for violence exceeded even modern America's...". Wow! Rick Steves uncovered.
This is savage 😀
His grasp of crime statistics is tenuous, and that’s being polite. This isn’t the first video in which he’s expressed an underlying dislike of his own country based on laughably inaccurate information.
@@grievousangel8655 is he wrong tho
Very savage 🤣 . Paused to quickly who else caught that. Lol!
Rome is one of my favourite cities in Europe, great history, the entire city is an open air museum, culture, gastronomy, all in one place.
yeah❤️ it is my second favourite after Athens !

Hands down my favourite channel for travel. I love that it does not have the vlog structure only skipping around town. It’s in-depth without being boring with an interesting narrative. It takes a lot of research to do what he does. I love his videos in European quaint towns a lot as well.
I had been to Rome, but never was as moved as watching this clip. I didn't fully appreciate it due to the lack of background knowledge. It's a great thing that I can still catch up by just watching rick explaining.
This might be the only channel I’ve found with no ads… I’m amazed. Thanks Rick you’re a G
Rick has THEE best job ever!! He gets to tour Europe as his job. He brings me as close to Europe as I'll ever get.
I've recently been to the National Museum and knowing that Romans had jewels made of Sri Lankan lapis lazuli was really astonishing.
A unique Rolex Daytona with a lapis lazuli dial just sold last week at auction for USD$3.2million. The highest ever for an automatic chronograph watch.
Michelangelo painted cappella Sistina with the Blue made with lapislazzuli.

Creo que a todos los que hemos visitado Roma nos pasa igual, yo también fui el año pasado y me enamore de la ciudad y ahora veo estos videos para recrearme de nuevo con la maravillas que vi personalmente, que dicha!
Greetings from Italy hermano 🇲🇽🇮🇹
Thanks for all you’ve done Mr. Steves. You have been a staple in my house since I have been a child. This is a great way for us poorer folks to appreciate the grandeur of European civilizations.
No one cares one bit bud nobody
I care!
I care too.
America is European civilization too (or it was before 1965)
Rome is Rome ! Always worth to visit! The feeling while you walking in the streets is forever: romantic, huge, beautiful, green and stunning !
Yea it's short of deep, ancient and so alive idk but it's truly amazing
Its an amazing and worth to visit these 2000 years old engineering marvels. In absence of any civil engineering guys and heavy earth moving vehicles and cranes how these mammoth structures were carried to the spot...
You are right

I've been there in 2011. My favorite European trip ever! :)
thank you for being you Rick
Love Rick Steves videos! Always very informative
I like Rick Steven video, but what the heck does he mean that Ancient Rome tastes for violence even exceeds modern America. Only places in America that seem to love violence are democrat run cities.
Fascinating. Rick I thoroughly enjoyed this trip through Ancient Rome.
No, actually Gladiators didn't fight to the death. At least not all the time, Gladiators were expensive and well taken care off, they were today's sprotsman, if you had one, you didn't want to lose one. The common misconception is that they fought to death, but no, they mostly didn't. A big portion of them were even volunteers.
Not accurate. It's true that Gladiators didn't always die and often were spared if they fought bravely. It's not true that it was seldom they died. They died quite frequently.
A lot of gladiators were treated like royalty
@@davidvilchez2209 the best gladiators were literal celebrities among people
@@paulpena5040 True! Especially when gladiators used such deadly weapons.
Those mosaics are something else.
Cruising with Rick during the pandemic, this brought back memories of a particular trip to Rome during the ATP tour. I still remember the vibrancy of holding this athletic contest close to the ancient Coliseum, the exuberance and friendly welcome of the crowds, the WINES! and the food stalls along the area as we entered.
While this is the Italian Open, it is called the "Rome Open." While it is played on clay courts, sports writers refer to the French Open as the only one played on clay.
Not to knock the French Open, it is in a city with a rude, expensive environment --and thin sour wines, (I stil l harbor some resentment over my first visit to Paris in 1950. The taxi driver did not give me change and pretended not to understand me. I sat until the doorman came out, and got the change. Five years after the war in which one of my cousins landed on Omaha Beach (D-day + 2).and 25 years after my father was wounded whille patrolling for German submarines in the North Atlantic.
A great professional video as always, thank you for this great guide. We have been several times in Rome and enjoyed it every time, a place where you can return any time.
I am very happy that I found your channel. Thank you so much for putting everything together and creating such an interesting and in-depth story.
Really good travelogue.
Visited Rome last year and saw most of these monuments. Nice to be able to “re-visit”. Thanks.
I recently went to Rome and absolutely loved it, you showed so much I didnt get to see too!
Hope to go back soon
I again and again watch all your videos and feel so amazed .
Thanks Rick and crew! Wonderfully presented and such a magnificent city, culture and history.
Will be there in March! Thank you for all the work you've done introducing people to travel! Watching you on PBS growing up is why I'm the travel fiend I am today!
You’re such a legend, Rick! I love watching your videos!
Thx
Great Show.
Thanks Steve.
Rick Steves: Rome fell in 500 AD
Byzantine Romans: *sweat intensifies*
😂😂😂😂😂
The Eastern Roman Empire fell 1453 AD
Yeah lol, the Byzantines actually ruled Rome for a while from the 500s to 753 ad
in the 1st millennium AD, no one would have understood which empire or state were you referring to after hearing you

Rick, I wonder if you thank and pray for history, of those you speak of. So many stories. So many lives. So much unsaid. But by bringing out points of interest is a good way of bringing awareness.
Thanks, Rick.
