French Cleat Desk
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 тра 2021
- I have made two desks for the craft room The idea for the desks was that they could hang off the French cleat system on the wall. This would allow for a completely clear space below the desks and the desk to be moveable if they needed to be. The structure for the desk is a torsion box for the desk surface, then two side panels that both hang from above and support from below the cantilever of the desk. I used Russian birch plywood for the desk, 1/4 inch MDF for the desk surface, and alder for the trim on the desk. They work great.

Part seventeen of the never ending new rooms in Frank's house. Cheers!
We still haven’t had an update on his basement machine shop either. How that room is attached-magic?
I love watching him work, but I'm like you....... eventually he's gonna run out if time in his house! Or is he gonna just move then. Lol
I think he's tunneled into neighbouring yards and has basement rooms under other people's houses.
The world you are all looking for is "portals".
can’t believe how much Calvin has grown since the series started
stay safe
I noticed the same thing. Fun watching these kids grow up.
They do that when you let 'em!!
Honestly, I can. If you think about it, time progresses forward despite our contrary wishes. It isn’t just Calvin, put any child in his place and there’s a good chance they would’ve grown up over the same span of time.
Frank's prototype is better than any of my finished projects :(
I was thinking nearly the same thing. I usually stop at Frank's prototype and pat my lazy self on the back after doing it.
So true. The bathroom I just got done renovating looks almost as good as Frank's prototype. I was proud of myself until now. lol
dude has a 200k$ workspace, i would hope so
now you have to make Calvin a monitor support hanging from the wall. the monitor base occupies a lot of desktop real state.
i was looking for this comment :-D french cleat vesa mount!
@@felixdietzCGN yes , i done one of these frensh cleat vesa mounts :D , but you cant tilt them, so a mechanism with wood gears would be nice
You might consider hanging the monitors using the cleat system on the wall. Gives more desk space and makes use of otherwise “dead” cleat areas behind a monitor on a stand.
Bonnie : "Its like real furniture"
Frank: "Yeah"
Does she know who her husband is?! Lmfao
The most humble woodworking god out there.
Don't understand why she sounded surprised, it's what we'd expect from Frank.😁
Hmmm my guess it's just cause the desks have a finish where the cleats do not, as "real" furniture would have a finish. Just my opinion.
Love the build Frank! Wish I had space for one of these in my workshop, for drawing up plans! :)
She's a lucky lady.
good to see that even the very skilled Mr Howarth still pops his tongue out a touch when he screws things together in the hope that all will line up :)
Frank never saw a room he didn't think needed french cleats. Love the channel!
@@ohasis8331 Don't give him ideas. Or maybe do. I'm not sure what side I'm on here.
I am beginning to think Frank either lives in a 10,000sqft home or he just builds new additions when he runs out of projects to do. Your skill continues to amaze me, keep up the great work.
Seeing as he's an architect, he can build new rooms anytime he needs one.
@@ohasis8331 That merger has already occurred...in numerous iterations...within various parallel universes.
Frank selects from all the videos of those various iterations to spin the story he finds most amusing. I know I chuckle almost as much as he does.
Nah, he lives in a TARDIS
@@oobaka1967 Lots of architects can draw cool shit. Few can make them a reality with their own hands. Frank is one of those few ---- great vision and inspiration matched with the skill of making it happen with his own hands. Amazing.
...I had some scrap plywood laying around...(pulls out a full sheet of plywood)
🤣🤣🤣
Haha if you're like me scrap bits of plywood are an inch too short in all directions
Lol I came here to say this. Only Frank would call an almost full sheet of clear Birch "scrap".
scrap aka $100 sheet of ply.
@@wabashstudio Is that really how much that would cost?
19:37 Hand Tool Rescue Wrench ❤
yes!
Good to see Calvin is a man of class, playing cs.
I have to be up in a couple of hours but that’ll have to wait. Seriously Frank please never stop doing these. It’s just something about your very simple video style, that makes it so easy to watch and enjoy. Thanks man.
simple ? I'm a videographer, and I can tell you that what Frank does is not simple. stop motion animation, he aligns his 3d renders with the footage...
@@gordinirojo I’m a photographer and understand the process. I’m not calling the videos simple, I’m calling the style simple. It’s very straight to the point, informative, and enjoyable.
Hey Lakey I'm not a videographer I don't know shit about this stuff I got what you meant and your right Frank is the best
French cleat the monitor for Calvin - - VESA mount to allow more deskspace - then cable manage and you are done :)
"I had some scrap plywood."
*Pushes full sheet though saw*
I love Frank 🤣
When you said that the prototype was not something you would sit on, it reminded me of the old saying "tables are for classes not asses" ;)
Frank is the Norm Abram of our generation. Thankyou Frank for your dedication to the Craft !
Frank,
I love the overall design. Where we may not agree is the printer shelf.
You were correct hanging it to the cleat beneath the desk top is a problem. And the vertical legs are not only ugly, but a potential slammed shin problem as well.
What might be a double positive is to make a conventual French Cleat shelf. Tilted slightly back towards the wall. Then you can hang it on the wall cleat above the desk.
Now for ease of access and peripheral device storage I would recommend placing the printer shelf above and between the gap of both desks. And don't forget storage space for paper and ink cartridges.
That's how I built desks and selves for my wife and kids. Just off the kitchen.
Eileen uses it for recipe hunting and bill paying. While the kids, when they were younger, used the space for homework, AOL Games, and early social networking.

I really love the printer shelf on this desk. So elegant.
Really cool project. I do have a suggestion though. It might be good to put some locking block or screw to prevent the desk from being popped off in the situation where someone crawls under it for some reason, then lifts the desk inadvertently.
"So, the first thing I made was a prototype..."
Put that on a T-shirt, please! Great video as always, Frank. You are inspirational. :)
Every time I watch your videos they put me in a better mood man, thank you it’s also really nice to see somebody with your skills be so nonchalant about those skills,no arrogance, not trying too hard just being your self, I don’t know if it matters at all to you but, you inspire me,not just to build stuff but to build with a purpose
Great job Frank! The use for French cleats just keeps expanding!
yes! i knew calvin would join the master race
after years of watching you, Im now in school for film and I have a whole new appreciation for your sound design, so well done every time
That one scene from the matrix where all the gunracks fly by but instead it's just french cleats
The initial render makes me think of a lever for pulling cleat rails off the wall
Love seeing kids of today, playing games online that I played in the late 90s and early 2000s while I was in college. (CS Go and AOE2).
Too bad Calvin can't go to college now, seeing as how you blew his college fund on plywood! 😂
I think we should change the name of the French Cleat to the ‘Frank Cleat’. Cool build ... as always. Such a pleasure to watch.
A great project, Frank. I always enjoy your chuckles when there are "oops" & "doh" moments.
You just solved my desk mounting problem! Thank you Frank.
As Doug of SV Seeker says, "We build it right, 'cus we build it twice!"
😁
Your Videos are just lovely made! I love the little shenanigans in the cut and the detailed commentary!
Thank you sir!
I have that brother laser and it’s awesome. Nice work! And she’s right about the cleats.
Frank is incredible in his ability to design and carry out a project. I'm always surprised when he finds something like a knife hinge (different video) as something he hadn't encountered before. He so beyond where us idiots that use knife hinges live.
Inspirational, as always! Thank you Frank
Looks awesome
Amazing
Love it! Nothing like designing pieces to fit the space perfectly.
looks like you are having fun
Really cool to see shots of your works in use -- would love to see some follow ups of how pieces of aged, changed from expected use, etc.
Always love your projects. Looks great. Thx.
I'd put hooks for a hanging basket underneath for a powerboard to get it off the floor and maybe brackets with a pull out dowel rod spaced along the underside of the desk for the cables. Great build as usual.
I've been using the "torsion box" method for my desk and work surface for years. I didn't make anything fancy like Frank did. I just used hollow core doors from the big box store. They work great 😋
Too cool for school! Great design and execution.
Yeah definitely looks like Alder to me!
Frank, beautiful design beautifully wrought once again
It’s something to imagine the desks as Frank’s most valuable possessions. OSB is $30 per sheet in my neighborhood. Yet the orange box store is busier than ever.
I second the suggestions for safeties on the desk mounts. I can see the cleats failing, or the desks climbing off of them if someone leans hard on the front edge. Reminds me of our less-than-successful try at using retail store slatwall takedowns for tool boards. Strong enough to hang transistors and lingerie, not entirely sufficient for big tools leveraging hooks as pry bars.
Nice work Mr. Howarth.
Your videos are a joy!
Frank, love watching you work. They way you go through your builds is so very........., well i don't know what word to use. It's just so, great watching you work. I love how the family gets involved, i am amazed at how big Calvin has gotten since the beginning of these videos. Thank you for the content and thanks for being an inspiration for me when i fee like i can't get motivated to finish a project.
Yes
The only thing that is missing is a hidden cable tray so you don't have cable clutter on the ground. Otherwise it's a really nice piece!
I like it, the printer support seems to work.
Amazing job my friend! You are extraordinarly talented. I'm green with envy.
Cannot wait for the big reveal video where we find out Frank isn't actually a video editing pro but an identical triplet!
I didn't think the printer solution was at all inelegant. On the contrary, I thought the level of innovation made it decidedly elegant. You can have a stop-gap solution that is so innovative and well-executed that it becomes elegant just on the execution. This was a good example.
You know what is missing, paint the wall! Frank, just any color you like. That's could be nice wall.
Frank throwing in an extra ad to pay for wood inflation.
Love the Handtool Rescue wrench cameo!
Nice job on the French cleat desk Frank! Thank you for sharing the video with us!💖👌👍😎JP
So nice and clean 😍 great job 👌
love the wrench cameo
Another great story Frank!
very nice !!!!
Nice
Definitely have to hang monitor(s) from the wall. Probably a swingarm light or two as well.
awesome work! I enjoyed the video very much.
Always impressive! Love watching your videos...
Aloooouuu, fica difícil saber em que mais você se supera na qualidade dos vídeos ou das peças fabricadas, parabéns e obrigado por compartilhar.
Very nice design and execution. Great results! Thanks.
"It looks like real furniture." Well, yeah! Frank made it. 😎
Wow! This would have been years to make all this! I didn't know there was a printer for wood!! PRAISE GOD!!😆
2:45 I was hoping to see two Franks carry it in.
Too nice!
We have the same planer! Nice old Powermatic
Cleat-mounting the monitors will free up some desk space as well. Would also make it really simple to change layouts for dual or even triple monitors.
This whole video, I couldn't understand why anyone would want their printer below the desk. Then I saw you placing a 2D printer and it made so much more sense. I incorrectly assumed a 3D printer.
The mind of an engineer and the creativity of an artist!
Why don't we have a Frank H in France? Very annoying!
Greetings from Paris.
A true tradesman
Damn those are really nice!
Hi Frank looks real good you do real great work. I am a maker too. I like watching a lot of UA-cam makers it gives me builder .
Keep up the great work Frank. I always enjoy your videos. One day I'd like to document my projects the same way.
I wish my final products would be half as good as this man's prototypes...
Awesome project! I hope to one day reach your level of awesomeness. Keep up the great work!
Lovely desks Frank, and thanks for the idea... I will probably build one more like the rough prototype for my workshop.
The printer could easily go 10cm higher and you'd reach down even less.
Since she made mention about the cleats being not as nice now. Maybe on the lower cleat you can do like a rail that a finished cover or decoration, with lighting underneath for a low light option to be used, instead of the big lights. Maybe like a reading lamp or LED strip that changes colors for the teen to not be sitting in the dark. Then above you can make finished shelves for storage or books. Just some ideas. Appreciate your videos.
Do you think the door for this room should be mirrored? So the door swings right and not into the desks 🤔
it's a double door and the door by the desk does not get used very much.
Next make a French cleat monitor mount.
Great save there Frank 8:34
Scrap plywood is like saying you have scrap uncut diamonds or scrap gold ingots
He grows another foot every time we see him. I think in a couple more vids he'll no longer fit in the house.
I need to do a shot were he is taller than the frame of the video. lol
I think Calvin has always had just two feet . . . 😂
My mother used to joke that my growth spurt was caused by me spending so much time in the aviary.
The only thing that I don't like is at the very end - the cable management for the printer. It needs to have some way to hide the cables, a false cover that's easy to get in and out of to tuck the cables up into so you don't have the ugly mess of wires.
You do some fantastic work, I'm very envious of your skills!
The Shell Mars A and Mars B floating offshore platforms were essentially constructed using torsion boxes. In this case though, the "skin" was steel plate. I cannot remember how thick it was, however.
The desktop is very similar to an Ikea desktop that I've owned. For further rigidity, they fill the 'void' areas of the frame with corrugated cardboard standing on end. It feels very solid, to the point where sitting or standing on it would probably be fine.
You could definitely stand on these. When he says you wouldn't want to sit on it he's referring to the cantilever ripping out of the wall.
Kinda pushin' the limits of the cleats.
Haha I am not sure there is such a thing as "scrap" ply anymore, every single piece now has a specific purpose!
As I was reading I thought you were going to say every single piece is worth $$$!
I love it. I also like how you explain your design process on such things. You have an idea of what you want. You build a little, test a little, and refine. Not everything needs to be perfect the first time. What eventually happened to your prototype?
I took it apart this morning, saving the pieces. not sure what to do with the desk top.
❤
