Making a Craft Room

  • I have been converting an unfinished room in our basement into a craft room. I had previously torn off all of the wall paneling and ceiling in this room leaving it as just bare studs. In finishing this room, I built a soffit around some ducts that are in the ceiling and I put in new electrical outlets and lighting. I then covered the ceiling with ¼” plywood and the walls with ½” plywood. This was then painted white to make a very bright space. Lastly, I made a French cleat system on the walls to hold our new workstations and storage systems for the craft room.

Man, over the last 22 years I have finished three basements with framing, plumbing, wiring, and all the fixins, and I swore I would never do it again.
And here I am now, watching Frank and feeling envious that he gets to do it, and in spades. "Hmm, I need some air circ, let's just jet over to the CNC and make a cold air return in an 8x4 sheet of plywood". Sweet. Nice work, amigo!

Every time you do another project in your basement, I am reminded that I'm laying on my bed watching UA-cam, with a completely unfinished basement beneath me, haha! Not to be "that guy who's an arm-chair elec-chicken", but to my eyes it looks like on the left side of the soffit above, you have a buried junction box, which I don't believe NEC allows no matter where you live.

Your children are very lucky to have a father who is both skilled enough AND motivated enough to make them this craft space. Art was the first human form of expression and communication. Nurturing a child’s artistic creativity is essential to developing well-rounded, confident and relaxed member of society. For a craft space, white walls and ceiling are a great choice. It’ll be less visually cluttered so they can tune into their imaginations easier. I hope your babies make tons of fun projects for years to come!

I'm a junior architect (in Honolulu) and I really appreciate how clear drawings turn into clean construction, you do well at both. I appreciate the style of your editing marrying design intent with the actual conditions. It's very clear and your videos are engaging, and I think it's really a reflection of your experience and understanding of carpentry and design.

Love the French cleats being used throughout the home, I would have been confused if you didn’t go with them for the craft room since they’re used pretty much everywhere else. This way you can move bins and tool boxes around for different projects and always have a place to hang them. I foresee new storage bins similar to those in the workshop in your future.

The vent you made is interesting, it ties into an idea I've been thinking about lately. I think places like that would be a great place to sneak in fans and air filters. The idea would be to integrate common off the shelf parts (like a box fan and a 25x25x1 HEPA filter). Shared walls that you don't mind sound crossing between, custom entertainment centers, computer cases, seem like ideal locations.
