Making a Craft Room
Вставка

- I have been converting an unfinished room in our basement into a craft room. I had previously torn off all of the wall paneling and ceiling in this room leaving it as just bare studs. In finishing this room, I built a soffit around some ducts that are in the ceiling and I put in new electrical outlets and lighting. I then covered the ceiling with ¼” plywood and the walls with ½” plywood. This was then painted white to make a very bright space. Lastly, I made a French cleat system on the walls to hold our new workstations and storage systems for the craft room.

Family: We want a spot to work on projects/crafts
Frank: Well you cant have any space in my shop.
I wouldn't want to do any non-woodworking stuff in a woodworking shop.
hi frank im 15 and i always done stuff in the shop my grandpa is a cnc machinist and im his aprentence but i also have a wood shop and i have learned so many thing is the past few years ive been watching you and you always inspire me to go out with new ideas and make stuff thxs man i love the vids i hope they never stop
great, glad to hear it.
Great response. You are so fortunate to have a grandfather like that. You can and should inspire many more of your generation. Wish you the best in all your future endeavors
@@radchander Thank you very much i know how luck and blessed i am and i dont know what i would do with out him because of famliy issues he is the father figure in my life
Classic PNW house from the 60's. Wood was almost free, lots were huge, basements were unfinished. 'Lets build a house, and make another one underneath, but just for storage.'
yes, we have a house under our house.
frank howarth thanks for all the vids Frank! I really love your work! I also now have 2 radial arm saws, and it doesn't seem like enough.
Man, over the last 22 years I have finished three basements with framing, plumbing, wiring, and all the fixins, and I swore I would never do it again.
And here I am now, watching Frank and feeling envious that he gets to do it, and in spades. "Hmm, I need some air circ, let's just jet over to the CNC and make a cold air return in an 8x4 sheet of plywood". Sweet. Nice work, amigo!
I'm convinced Frank is just tunneling from room to room underground. where is all this space coming from. How many millions of sq feet is this house?
I think by this point, he has tunneled into a neighbor's house
😂 I was just thinking that! Like does he live in a Tardis? Is space-time folded into infinite pocket dimensions beneath his house? Is he occupying his neighbors’ basements?
Frank lives in the Labyrinth."Sure there's a room there, You just aiint' lookin" right."
Watch out for the door that is upside down... :D
The way you edit is so entertaining!
He is the best woodworker editor I've seen on youtube.
@@mattstokes9624 Hands down one of the best UA-cam editors regardless of genre.
"Hi, I"m Frank and I'm a Cleat-A-Holic."
Everybody: Hello Frank!
🤣😂
Shouldn't it be "Je suis un Cleat-A-Holique", seeing as they are french cleats?
I am absolutely fascinated with how frank thinks. Meeting frank is officially on my bucket list
I agree, I believe that is why his channel is so popular. It has nothing to do with his bevy of tools and power equipment. It is how he uses them.
Every time you do another project in your basement, I am reminded that I'm laying on my bed watching UA-cam, with a completely unfinished basement beneath me, haha! The perfectionist in me, loves the perfectionist in you, there aren't many people that would bother caulking a basement craft room, or a living room for that matter!
who would dislike a video like this? I just don't understand the world, haha.. thank you Frank, you are endlessly entertaining to watch!
Anybody else wondering how big Frank’s basement is 😂? Loving the videos as always
Frank, Your planning and execution skills are second to none. You continue to amaze us. Well done!!
Cleatus McFarland would love this episode. Cleats everywhere!
Send him the link!
With hole saws my dad always runs it in reverse first. That scores the first layer. He is usually drilling through vinyl siding, but maybe that will work for the plywood too.
Not to be "that guy who's an arm-chair elec-chicken", but to my eyes it looks like on the left side of the soffit above, you have a buried junction box, which I don't believe NEC allows no matter where you live.
Also box extenders on the outlets through the plywood. Don't want a faulty or overloaded outlet arcing next to the wood with no barrier.
I never thought I would ever hear Frank say, "It almost looked too straight." C'mon, man! You are precision incarnate LOL
Frank, I love how you have fun with your video’s. It’s not just teaching and sharing but entertaining as well. Thank you.
I just love how you share your little mistakes and corrections. So good for us who aspire to your level but you’re also mortal :)
A craft room made by a true craftsman. Thank you for explaining your thought process including your revisions. Also the editing is amazing.
I love the efficiency of this! You combined trim, french cleats, and decoration!
This is EXACTLY what I want to do in my combination home office / hobby room. Looking forward to seeing the French cleat fixtures in the next video.
I appreciate you including some of the "mistakes" and your solutions -- it's how we learn.
Frank is a "cut" above. Thanks for sharing your innate talents with us kind Sir. It is awesome.
Congrats, Frank. Your ingenuity never fails to amaze me.
Another well done project Frank, you are a worthy and capable woodworker and carpenter, I enjoy all that you do. .
what a great project. I really like how bright the room looks
I've watched your channel for many years now (2 or 3), and was going to leave w comment about how much I like it, when I realized I'm not subscribed. So I rectified that and now am a subscriber. I find your voice the most soothing, but your projects are amazing.
Your children are very lucky to have a father who is both skilled enough AND motivated enough to make them this craft space. Art was the first human form of expression and communication. Nurturing a child’s artistic creativity is essential to developing well-rounded, confident and relaxed member of society. For a craft space, white walls and ceiling are a great choice. It’ll be less visually cluttered so they can tune into their imaginations easier. I hope your babies make tons of fun projects for years to come!
Superb, as ever, Frank. Many thanks for the new video!
Love the rhythmic nailing!! Great use of space too.
Looking forward to it! Your renovations are always inspirational.
That's looking so much better already 👍👍👍
Frank, you are a champion! I am very proud of you!
Frank, thank you for sharing your process and taking the time to illustrate your concepts in real space. I'm a junior architect (in Honolulu) and I really appreciate how clear drawings turn into clean construction, you do well at both. I appreciate the style of your editing marrying design intent with the actual conditions. It's very clear and your videos are engaging, and I think it's really a reflection of your experience and understanding of carpentry and design.
I look forward to seeing how flat that concrete slab is and how you finish it. I hope the wall base doesn't overlap the vents at the wall/floor condition.
That may be the nicest craft room on UA-cam!!
Great job Frank! Looks like a lot of work went into this room but turned out very nice. Thanks for posting!
I LOVE Spax screws. I think they are very much worth the extra cost.. Frank your videos are easy like Sunday morning bro.
A Classic Frank production, very nice work.
Beautiful transformation, Frank 👍❤️
Beautiful as always. Thanks Frank!
Everything's better with a Frank Howarth video. Thanks Frank
that's a lot of work. I would have made 10 videos out of this effort.
and now it looks fresh and sleek. very nice!
Really good idea cutting that vent directly into the wall panel.
What a great addition to your home !!
used to do sub systems in cars ... a router and guide works well for making holes quickly and cleanly :)
great work as always best wishes to all
I’d watch you build anything. Great story as always.
Great work Frank that will be a great space for the whole family to use!
Just a quick note for future reference, when you are mixing any power in a bucket start with a little water on the bottom of the bucket, this will reduce any chance of having dry chunks.
Cheers from Tokyo!
Stu
Great result, Frank. Thanks for sharing.
Love the French cleats being used throughout the home, I would have been confused if you didn’t go with them for the craft room since they’re used pretty much everywhere else. This way you can move bins and tool boxes around for different projects and always have a place to hang them. I foresee new storage bins similar to those in the workshop in your future.
I love the waltz of the pneumatic nailer! Nicely done all around!
*staples 7:32
Love the french cleet look. Nice job!!
I’ve found trim head screws to be really useful for this sort of thing where you want the attaching hardware to be as discrete as possible while still being removable (so you can remove the plywood to access the duct work if needed).
The room looks great!
brilliant use of wall space. Thanks for sharing. eagerly looking forward for your next video.
New lighting!? A single bare light bulb is just fine!
Gotta love seeing that plywood panel lift!
Looking really good
Always fun to watch you work!!
Love the video Frank. Regarding cutting out perfect holes in the walls for the electrical boxes. Break off the "ears" on the top and bottom of the electrical plug to make the fit a little easier.
Lovely work Frank.
That room looks great. I can’t wait to see your French cleat desk and storage system.
thanks, me too, lol
You really must be in your wife’s good books! Excellent work. 🇦🇺👴🏻
Was Aboutaleb to go to sleep, than a noticed the video of Frank. Got a drink and enjoyed the video. The ceiling and Wallis are a big improvement to this basement room. Nicely done.
Outstanding job my friend
I also made my air return out of plywood, but I only went halfway thru from the front using the cnc router and then, on the back side, cut halfway thru in a perpendicular pattern. It REALLY made the painting an effort (until I broke out the spray can).
Video really needed to have a soffit counter. Glad to have you back Frank
Another well thought out and executed project Frank :-)
Great job Frank, Love your videos
Only person I've ever seen be able to work from both sides of the fence. Impressive!!
I have this recurring dream of just one day finding a hidden room to our crammed apartment. Frank is living that dream. Also, have we reached peak cleat yet?
Frank, I’m obsessed with your videos! Thanks and keep it up!
I think the backwards hole saw was on purpose. I've done this before to score a piece of plywood so the hole saw didn't tear up the top layer.
The room looks so nice, brighter and bigger.
A good trick with the outlets is take the outlets out and drill a hole in the 'center' of the box. Then with the panel in place use a trim router with a straight bit and follower bearing to follow the box.
You are very talented and creative!
Beautiful job Frank !
Thanks, Frank. Another cool project.
Como siempre un muy buen trabajo Frank. Saludos desde Uruguay
Seeing frank cut an imperfect circle in some plywood made me realize he’s just like the rest of us. Haha
As usual...awesome! Love your site.
Frank: Woodworker. Skim coater. Plywood walls for craft room anchor flexibility. Well done sir.
The vent you made is interesting, it ties into an idea I've been thinking about lately. I think places like that would be a great place to sneak in fans and air filters. The idea would be to integrate common off the shelf parts (like a box fan and a 25x25x1 HEPA filter). Shared walls that you don't mind sound crossing between, custom entertainment centers, computer cases, seem like ideal locations.
Nice job. Looks great! Certainly worth the time and effort. Installing those lights and painting the room bright white eliminates any concern about the lack of windows.
Looks great!
Looks good Frank
Nice job Frank !.
The "9-inch stud wall" you referred to are commonly called "ladders" in my region. Often times framed with a 2x2 at the ceiling and a strip of OSB (or ply) instead of "studs."
Love the brightness of the space!
You should consider carpet squares for the floor. I had them in my basement when i bought the place. I pulled about half of them out when i moved my wood shop in and ended up regretting it so i put them back.
It keeps the room more comfortable, and the dust down. Cleaning is as simple as just vacuuming.
Beautiful Work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
looks really good. White Walls and Ceiling make a room always look way bigger.
Covering the electrical junction boxes in the cieling is an electrical code violation, as well as the open splice in the wall at 13:28. Hope you don't regret it later on.
Permit? Not a responsible video imo, sorry Frank.
I really like the little vent you added!
Hi Frank, I should stop lurking. I'm do
ing the same thing as you, coincidentally. I used a router with a template to cut holes, and your idea to make the holes small is good.
I'm using 3/4" fire retardant ply.
Excellent item i discovered are Carlon depth adjustable boxes - in some places just using 1/2" ply.
He was proud of that plaster work, it was the last shot in the video.
The panel lift is awesome
Looks great! Love your videography skills.
Looking forward to the final craft room reveal!
I was expecting when the panel lift went up there would be the voice overlay saying “panel goes up”
Love all your vids Frank, more so the shop projects than the DIY stuff :)
Very interesting video. Nice work. Thanks!
