But Data also knows that the only correct thing to do is attempt to speak to him. It might just be a programed response in him, but for a human to do the same would be nothing but courage and compassion.
In my experience, autistic people relate to each other very well. Data’s emotions (which I believe he had the entire time, just in a different way) make him essentially autistic, and I am certain Worf is autistic.
I always found Data's honesty to be hilarious since he doesn't realize that his straightforwardness can come off as pretty annoying, creepy, and shocking to others. Especially when he's right.
@@Kllgg I wouldn't say that Worf is autistic. He's a Klingon man raised by human parents. Because Klingons have such intense emotions (ironically similar to Romulans), it's quite the handful for humans when they don't have experience with even unruly human children. So while it's possible that Worf has autism, it's very unlikely. He just has stunted social skills from a lack of socialization with other Klingons. But Data is very much analogous to an autistic person. He feels emotion, he just doesn't truly comprehend it.
I miss the scene where Data confronted Worf because he disrespected Data while being in command of the Enterprise. "Mr. Worf, I am sorry if I have ended our friendship"... one the best scenes of TNG, in my opinion
I absolutely love how data is portrayed as almost a robot in the first seasons, but progresses to the friendly, conversational Android we see in later seasons. And in best of both worlds, he is shown to have progressed even further, using contractions and even understanding humor and emotions
Don't forget that in BOBW was the first time Data had ever killed anyone. When he and Wolf were sent to the Borg cube to decomandeer Locutus, Data was covering them, and a Borg drone suddenly turned the corner right behind Data, and he whirled around and shot it at point blank range. 😞
A more accurate observation is that data has become so good at mimicking human behavior and psychology they no longer really see him as the android he is. He would be the perfect terminator.
yes that was so funny, especially his facial expressions! - I get thinking of when they cut and they all must have just roared with laughter off camera!
i gotta say im really stunned to see so many people that are a fan of Data coz to me this character is a hero. i was born autistic emotionally ditched and many other ailments that over the years ive learn about. my mum always use to comment that she she though it strange when i would not act like other kids as in ide kick my toe and it would bleed but although it was painful and i did not like it it never occurred to me to cry. i think its really important abstract characters like this one exist coz it give people like me a chance to find a connection with neurotypical people and im really shocked to see other people value his character this way.
Data is by far my favorite character and the person i could most easily see myself being friends with. If you relate to data, I think that speaks most highly of you as an individual.
Gotta be the coolest sci fi character ever. A android trying to learn to be human while dealing with high stress situations in space. Has friendly crew mates, great story arc, and a cat! Seeing him with spot is so cool. Over time seeing him become more human and learning contractions and quips make is so enjoyable to watch. Spock is hard to recreate but for TNG he is a great adaptation
11:51 "you are such a sweet little kitty. Aren't you?" 11:53 "she is to you" Thank you for bringing this part in. Brent seems jealous that Dwight had his car on...
28:31 this makes me bawl like a baby every single time,,,, his soft voice, his e y e s, he sounds so fucking sad that he can’t be sad, like I’m bringing him into my ribs and keeping him safe there
I was born well after this show was off TV and I never got to see it, and I'm so glad this compilation exists because the amount of personality all of these people have is so cool and fun to watch!
great set of clips. a personal favourite of mine has to be the scene in the episode 'thine own self' when a young kid asks an amnesic data if he thinks heaven is real ("a beautiful place where everything is peaceful and everyone loves each other") and, despite his memory being faulty, he looks up at the stars and answers "yes, I do". one of the most human characters in fiction :)
The fact that Data was peeved at her mispronouncing his name demonstrates how good Soong was. He made an Android that displays a basic level of emotion without even it noticing. 3:12 That, for example, is a *masterful* replication of a fear response. The fact that Data was also able to responsibly and safely care for an animal is also impressive. 26:26 What's still surprising to this day is that this doofus thought Data ran on the Three Laws or somesuch. 32:34 I wish they could've recorded this statement for that dumb court case they ran him through. If there was any question of Data having achieved full Sapience. This set of sentences would answer that question. Well done, Soong. Well done.
I think that Data had emotions all along but couldn't feel or express them as intensely as Lore until he installed his emotion chip. Soong probably programmed him like that so he doesn't lash out at people in a fit of temper or let negative emotions cloud his better judgment. With his superhuman strength and abilities, it would have been disastrous if Data lost his temper over anything.
It took a man of artificial life, whom one would think that doesn't have a spirit or soul.... To awaken everyone's spirit and soul around him... To realize that he had more spirit and soul than anyone that could ever be....

I haven't finished watching this but want to say that one of My Favorite scenes is in "Generations", when Data is looking through the rubble searching for Spot. When he finally finds her & hugs her so tight, it brings tears of joy to my eyes. 💞
The "datas day" episode where he dances with Crusher and he smiles would of been a good addition. And when he sleeps with Tasha. And when Q makes him laugh.
I love data’s day soooo much!! tbh idk why I didn’t add some of those scenes- I think there were a bunch of things I just forgot to record! those ones are pretty popular though so they’re in a bunch of other videos on UA-cam
When you hear people saying, "would of" they are really saying "would've." "Would've" is a contraction of "would" and "have." "Would of" makes no sense!
"Can you please continue the petty bickering?" Holy shit. This writing is perfect. Geordi facepalms. There's so much visual story telling going on that I missed as a child.
I am both surprised and pleased that I’m not the only one who got that! Those Night Court episodes were my first encounter with Brent Spiner. Loved him as Doctor Oken in Independence Day as well as in the sequel. Great actor! 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦
@@Momcat_maggiefelinefanI enjoyed Brent's other film appearances outside of Star Trek as well. I thought he was quite handsome without all that chalky white makeup and creepy yellow contacts. Wonder why they couldn't make him look completely human like Voyager's hologram.
I was never invested in Star Trek, i knew my mom loved the series and caught a few episodes here and there. Then I heard once how Data's mannerisms resemble that of autsim, earning him the title of an autistic icon/representation in media. Thank you for uploading this and finding its way to my youtube recommended so that I may witness firsthand these mannerisms as he embodies them. It honestly made me giddy how he calculatedly explains things and was sent over the moon when he got started about the chemical composite of brown dwarf stars. We need more characters lime Captain Data.
1:36 I really loved this moment because I remembered watching this episode with my mom lol I later mumbled "thanks Data for making this episode less weird"
Data may not be able to fully express and understand emotions but he is definitely a sentient lifeform. 26:20 he is feeling rage but his emotional inhibitors keep him from showing it, he tried to avenge his friend and if the teleporter was a second slower he'd have killed that slimy worm.
@6:03 - one of the lesser known, but more wholesome and impactful episodes. The relationship he developed with the little boy was truly heartwarming and equally heavy, especially for those of us who experienced this kind of trauma and grief at a similar age. ❤
5:05 There it is, the scene I was waiting for! I wish you’d included the part where Data tries out his new skills, though. I love how much they both seem to enjoy their endless feedback loop of small talk.
I love Data. He was the heart and soul of TNG. The show wouldn't have last 7 seasons without him. Patrick Stewert is hard to be on par with let alone outshine. And I don't think Stewert would take offense to that, infact I think he would agree. Brent Spiner made Data one of the most memorable characters of all time and his character development is beautiful to watch.
Brent Spiner and my mother were born on same day February 2, 1949. She always loved Data, despite not knowing this fact for many years, because she loved his mysteriousness and everything else about him.
Left out one of my favorite scenes: Data commanding the Enterprise after Picard and Riker got abducted and having to prove his commanding abilities over Worf, who questioned him in front of the crew several times. The way he combines his role as the leader, stays clear on the point about what he has to criticize while using it as an opportunity to help Worf grow in his understanding of his new role, then making clear it was not meant personally in any way and therefore keeping their friendly relationship intact. It really gave me unrealistic expectations of what to expect from adults later in life as I watched it when I was young.
15:31 Here, one can observe the point where Lieutenant Commander Data's eyes narrow slightly in a *simulation* of appropriate facial response for human surprise, as he realizes that Julianna can reproduce his violin notes with flawless perfection -- and also that her eyelids blink in accordance with the same Fourier formula he himself uses for blinking. He then realizes that “Julianna" must be an android. I knew that this was the scene in which Data realized the fact, but I had never before noticed Data's facial reaction. Interesteringly, Data’s facial response to those circumstances is itself an approximation. It is derived from a hyothesis of what an emotional humanoid being might do, but it is executed by an emotionless constructed being.
I gladly watched this video in its entirety, and am happy for having done so. However, I was left in a somewhat anticlimactic state. I was so sure the final clip was going to be of Data saying goodbye to Lal at the end of "The Offspring" (Season 3, Episode 16). Though I've watched every ST:TNG episode numerous times and there are several that have left a deep emotional imprint on me, That exact moment, of that specific episode, had the greatest impact with me in all things regarding Data. Throughout the entire series, There've been numerous times where Data became more.. ..human. You touched on several of those in your video. Some were comedic moments that demonstrated his capacity for levity, sarcasm, and irony, while others hinted at his ability to rationalize the emotional impact of less favorable feelings such as anger, remorse, loss of love or life, etc.. To me, his final moments with Lal were the greatest demonstration of how tragic it was for the character to be bereft of that bridge between his logic and his emotional self awareness. Most fans wanted Commander Pinocchio to finally get his wish. Others argue the detriment that emotions introduce to any being, thus feel he was better off without the id/ego/super-ego trifecta. But for those of us whom can feel sympathy and empathy, the final scene with Lal was crushing.
Not sure if Data really needed to make up an excuse about shooting at Fajo. Ok, his life wasn't in immediate danger but given the circumstances of his capture and the cruelty that Fajo had already demonstrated, there was no other way to be sure that Fajo wouldn't deactivate him or erect forcefields to hold him in captivity.
And thank you for putting at least some of the BEST Spot bits together. (Now I'm crying about a WONDERFUL moment of a certain thing in a certain recent and uneven show named after a certain legendary Captain and I have to go hug my cats!)

There were moments were I do believe Data did have emotions. I do believe that Data lied to Commander Riker in The Most Toys, about the misfire. 27:55 Even Riker didn’t believe him.
Also most of his interactions with Spot. When he gave her to Worf so he could take care of her, it definitely seemed like Data cared for the cats well being with how much instruction he gave Worf. I don't think they had Data be that expressive just for a bit.
I think of Data as not exactly being autistic, but having some kind of android equivalent. His emotions exist but he can't process them or express them the others normally can.
Strictly speaking it's not even a lie, even if it carries the spirit of one. The something that happened during transport would be data deliberately discharging the weapon with intent to kill
@@naverilllang I think there's another layer to explaining the "lie", which we know Data is strictly programmed against, about the "misfire". Pretty clear Data chose to fire, which violates another program. But if the choice were motivated by a genuine flash of emotion instead of logic, that would have been so new & strange a thing to experience that Data might have truly believed the "something happened during transport" line. It would be in line with the very real human trait of "it's not a lie... if you believe it" thing. The Most Toys. That episode is amazing. From the technical, investigative element that uncovers the truth behind things, to the phenomenol performances of Spiner and the guy who played Fajao, his name escapes me, but he was great in that role. DEFINITELY on my Mt. Rushmore of Next Gen episodes, and DEFINITELY one of my favorite Data episodes.
Favorite line, there at the end... "I made a...leap of faith." If you have to do this daily, weekly, monthly, constantly, making a leap, that is a fight against every alternative. Giving up on your faith, your reason to exist, and ending it all with nothing to say, that is the crux of humanity today. What was it all for? And why was it not enough?
This show is actually brimming with life advice in almost every episode. Those of us who grew up with it (where has the time gone) notice this the most.
How could you include the part with him mimicking the gestures of obnoxious small talk diplomat but not the part later in that episode where they start 'small talking' with each other endlessly after he finished developing the small talk sub-routine. That was the funniest part!

In my experience, autistic people relate to each other very well. Data’s emotions (which I believe he had the entire time, just in a different way) make him essentially autistic, and I am certain Worf is autistic.
❤❤❤ I feel this.
Or talking to angry Worf "You share all those qualities in abundance!"
I miss the scene where Data confronted Worf because he disrespected Data while being in command of the Enterprise. "Mr. Worf, I am sorry if I have ended our friendship"... one the best scenes of TNG, in my opinion
that scene was so good!! tbh I didn’t include it because it’s so well-known
Wasn't that Riker? I think I watched that clip yesterday.
Just had to go watch that the clip of that because of this comment. Wonderful scene.
No I am the one that has jeopardised our relationship. If you would allow me, I would like to continue as your second in command.
Good call! That scene must happen in all armed forces on the planet, in one form or another.
I love his polite little "one moment" to Spot at 9:30 😂
hahaha
I absolutely love how data is portrayed as almost a robot in the first seasons, but progresses to the friendly, conversational Android we see in later seasons. And in best of both worlds, he is shown to have progressed even further, using contractions and even understanding humor and emotions
He's a real boy
That part when he planted the emotion chip on ST: Generations, it was overloading him
I've always liked the idea that he's not INCAPABLE of using contractions, he just doesn't fully understand them and therefore doesn't like to use them
Don't forget that in BOBW was the first time Data had ever killed anyone.
5:16 is definately one of data's most funny moments the way he is mimicing trying to get the gestures down for small talk.
yes that was so funny, especially his facial expressions!
We're all on the same journey as Data. Learning to be a person. And there are all kinds of people.
I liked Data far more than Voyager's doctor hologram. That dude was annoying as fuck.
When did Data use contractions?
Are you Lore?
7:27 I love that even in the Star Trek universe, cats still jump onto laptops and onto peoples workspaces 😂
11:51 "you are such a sweet little kitty. Aren't you?" 11:53 "she is to you" Thank you for bringing this part in. Brent seems jealous that Dwight had his car on...
"With all due respect: BE GONE!!! - Sir." LOL
28:31 this makes me bawl like a baby every single time,,,, his soft voice, his e y e s, he sounds so fucking sad that he can’t be sad, like I’m bringing him into my ribs and keeping him safe there
I feel the need to give him cuddles and hugs
Bret Spiner as Data, a major piece of Star Trek Next Generation, his performance was exemplary.
Amazing acting
Brent was hilarious in Night Court too!
Is everyone really going to pretend Ode to Spot is a bad poem? That shit bangs.
I was born well after this show was off TV and I never got to see it, and I'm so glad this compilation exists because the amount of personality all of these people have is so cool and fun to watch!
I have great news. Libraries exist and you can get the whole series on DVD or online for free
great set of clips. a personal favourite of mine has to be the scene in the episode 'thine own self' when a young kid asks an amnesic data if he thinks heaven is real ("a beautiful place where everything is peaceful and everyone loves each other") and, despite his memory being faulty, he looks up at the stars and answers "yes, I do". one of the most human characters in fiction :)
that was such a beautiful episode🥹🥹🥹🥹 I love data
Well done.
19:06 is good too
I think that Data had emotions all along but couldn't feel or express them as intensely as Lore until he installed his emotion chip. Soong probably programmed him like that so he doesn't lash out at people in a fit of temper or let negative emotions cloud his better judgment. With his superhuman strength and abilities, it would have been disastrous if Data lost his temper over anything.
@@Elly3981 That's a good point. Soong probably learned that lesson with Lore.
@@thebighurt2495 Sadly, it wasn't entirely Lore's fault that he turned out the way he did.
It took a man of artificial life, whom one would think that doesn't have a spirit or soul.... To awaken everyone's spirit and soul around him... To realize that he had more spirit and soul than anyone that could ever be....
Yes. He wanted to be a real boy instead of the ageless porcelain doll he was so to speak.
an ode to spot is amazing and data is a poetic genius.
Data pantomiming “Hutch” while he practices how to conduct small talk is such a hysterical moment!! And Worf’s irritation with Data is too!!
I think Spot should have got more love, She did save the ship once.
And she was once a he
@@SamuelBlack84I think there were two spots the mom and then spot junior a kitten might have come along when the crew and cats had the devolving episode that data and captain Picard reversed and set right. So that could explain there being a male and a female spot
@@ericmiller9688 As opposed to lazy screenwriting?

I love this compilation! Data is one of ST's most fun characters because for all of his superhuman abilities, he's still so child-like and innocent himself. Brent Spiner played him beautifully!
Data and spot moments are the best.
Yes, Datas cat training is coming along fine.
Tell him he is a pretty cat & a good cat.
This is down. Down is good.👇
Please continue the petty bickering always gets me
Even in the far future Cats are still training people to do whatever they want them to do and Spot sure had Data trained.
Ode to Spot is unironically great.
One of the greatest characters ever made
Yes
Asides from his superhuman abilities, Data (Brent Spiner), seemed so innocent and child-like.
"This is up. Up is no." became an inside joke with my dad and I. We would use it in random situations involving anything being "up".
I haven't finished watching this but want to say that one of My Favorite scenes is in "Generations", when Data is looking through the rubble searching for Spot. When he finally finds her & hugs her so tight, it brings tears of joy to my eyes. 💞
Data imitating Hutch is easily one of the funniest moments in the whole series lol
I won't look in your direction. Slowly, creepily turns.
For not understanding humor he sure is good at it.
I think Data's straightforward way of talking comes off as annoying, creepy, and even downright shocking to others.
When you hear people saying, "would of" they are really saying "would've." "Would've" is a contraction of "would" and "have." "Would of" makes no sense!
the true hero actor of that show , the cat seriously so many uncomfortable things it endured for the sake of scenes
"Data, you're a clever man - in any time period." Very well said
"Can you please continue the petty bickering?"
Holy shit. This writing is perfect.
Geordi facepalms. There's so much visual story telling going on that I missed as a child.
😅
Data channeling his inner Bob from Night Court was just completely hilarious.
I agree. That was hilarious.
22:50 is so sweet, Picard is like a proud father. ☺️
I love that scene in The Royal where data realigned the dice. "Baby needs a new pair of shoe" genius 😅
1:36 I really loved this moment because I remembered watching this episode with my mom lol
I later mumbled "thanks Data for making this episode less weird"
I see...
What _is_ nine to the third power?
I can never figure "cubes" fast enough in my head to use in any practical way.
"I will feed him." Exactly my thoughts Worf.
😅
Data may not be able to fully express and understand emotions but he is definitely a sentient lifeform. 26:20 he is feeling rage but his emotional inhibitors keep him from showing it, he tried to avenge his friend and if the teleporter was a second slower he'd have killed that slimy worm.
I think Data has feelings, which are locked behind several algorythms designed by soong to prevent him being like lore.
" I intend to run a full DNA scan on the kittens" 😂
😅
Data is one of my favorite Star Trek characters. He kills the music scene!
@6:03 - one of the lesser known, but more wholesome and impactful episodes. The relationship he developed with the little boy was truly heartwarming and equally heavy, especially for those of us who experienced this kind of trauma and grief at a similar age. ❤
i love how the crew just gave up on spot and turned spot into a lady cat and also had very different-looking cats play spot
"Ignite the midnight petroleum". Wiser words have never been spoken. 😂😂😂😂 Need that on a t-shirt. 😂😂😂
Here here 😊
Brent Spiner and my mother were born on same day February 2, 1949. She always loved Data, despite not knowing this fact for many years, because she loved his mysteriousness and everything else about him.
I wonder if that guy realized how close he was to getting vaporized by Data.. Dude literally got saved by the transporter.
Kivas fajo😅
the moment he realizes that spot has trained him... priceless...
Best scene in my opinion is when he laughed as a parting gift from Q. I could watch that a 100 times and still laugh with joy and silliness.
Ah, Data. The most human of characters. A character who never recognized his own humanity. I love Data.
The prime emotion he had was curiosity.
Data & Spot is one of my favorite things.
Ode to spot is the best poem i have ever heard. Nice. I have remember it for two decades lol. Or more.
God I miss STTNG!! Thanks for the flash-backs...
I forgot how much I like this show. Data was always my favorite! Thank you so much!
Well, asides from his incredible talent, I'm sure that Mr. Spiner's good looks (at the time) also made Data a popular and adorable character as well. Asides from his handsome face, I also found Brent's hands pretty eye-catching when I see them up close; maybe it was the white makeup, but they look incredibly delicate, smooth, and beautiful for a guy. Even his fingernails look perfect like he gets them done regularly.
I love the most toys.
I cannot allow this to continue
Data has no clue what humour is ,but when he hits it,he is the most entertaining of all the characters!.
Favorite line, there at the end...
"I made a...leap of faith."
If you have to do this daily, weekly, monthly, constantly, making a leap, that is a fight against every alternative.
That was the funniest part!
data is so wholesome and heart warming. he was always my favorite.
7:27 the clip of spot harassing data then him on the table knocked out lol. great transition
I love Data. He’s the best human ever.
I loved Lt. Yar, too. I was sad to see her leave the show.
"With. All due respect. BEGONE!!! Sir."
Worf gets a better showing in that one clip than Data has in the whole compilation.
9:03 HILARIOUS!!
I've had cats for many decades. HILARIOUS!!!!!
Data crying when he finds Spot at the end of “Star Trek Generations” probably would have been a good way to end the Data and Spot section. Also, Brent Spiner HATED working with that cat.
omg I love those interviews where spiner talks about the cats! and yeahhh it really would’ve been a good addition but I decided to leave out clips from the movies since I haven’t seen all of them yet (i have specific plans for watching them with ppl) maybe I’ll make a video of my favorite data moments from the movies once I’ve watched them all!!
lol why?
@@Nikki_the_G If you're asking why Brent Spiner hated working with the cat, the answer is right there in the video in the scene where Data tries to train Spot. 😃
I know it was hell for the actors - acting with animals always is - but I love whoever decided that Data would want a cat. Also Barclay clearly being a cat person, too.
Cats are difficult to work with. If Spot was a dog, it might have been easier on Mr. Spiner, lol. I think several cats have portrayed Spot in the TV series and ST movies, not just one.
Well this was just the perfect way to spend my lunch break! I love him so much. ☺
Worf was my fave as a kid but as I grew older and experienced looking after children, Data has become my fave.
Data is actually really good with kids. I think the reason they like him so much is because he's very innocent and childlike himself.
Now wait a damn minute. I thought spot preferred supplement 25? Several scenes later she's being given that 221 swill!
Too much of a good thing...
I’ve never seen a cat enjoy the same type of food for long
Brand name change.
Spot also used to be a "he", and later "she" has kittens.
And sometimes Spot is a boy (as most orange tabbies are)
Dwight Schultz was great at playing Broccoli, er, Barclay as well as Murdock in The A-Team
Fun fact. Diana Muldaur who played Dr. Katherine Pulaski in the second season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, also appeared in two episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series in the late 1960s, playing two different roles (Dr. Miranda Jones and Ann Mulhall). I just didn't feel like she was a good fit as ship's doctor. Gates McFadden as Beverly Crusher absolutely crushed it IMHO.
7:21 His voice from Night Court!
What episode is this from?! I can't remember it happening
Bob Wheeler!
Data and Spot is so me with my own cat. She is absolutely joy but also very stubborn lmao
