I flushed Adobe for the same reason and now have a universal license for Affinity Suite that runs on all my devices including the Mac and iPad. I love what Blackmagic has done.
Even if they went back to just a paid version that allows complete ownership as opposed to paying ransom every month or year, they would still be better off. But it's too late for that. There's a free version out now, that gives not just ownership but is actually free, and is every bit as good and only going to get better.
I use DaVinci Resolve and film with my iPhone. The cloud option, where you can upload video clips as you are filming is a game changer and time saver. I hope that Blackmagic will be adding features gradually.
Even for a V.1 it's impressive. I wish there were separate reticles for focus and exposure. The ability to save presets would be nice too along with gimbal compatibility. I do love the BM Cloud link. My workflow is to shoot while traveling (Vlog Motocamping in Vietnam), make selects at night, then auto push to BM cloud while I sleep. Then when I get home, the footage is already safely backed up and in a DaVinci Resolve project I set up prior to leaving and ready to edit. This is my primary app now. FilmicPro has been deleted to force me to get nimble with. all features and settings.
Great review, thanks! It doesn’t do everything, but it does seem to be a great tool for some cases. The killer feature for those quick “grab shots“ on the go to me is that you can lock it to horizontal mode video. Accidental vertical video in a horizontal production seems to happen often enough to be a problem.
The ability to shoot Landscape while phone is mounted vertically is kind of cool. Also the option of enabling regular Vertical mode for tiktok clips. I hope they continue to work on the app and add new features like that DoubleTake. I don't like that FilmicPro is subscription.
Hey Zdenka, Yep - another great video with a great pace (maybe a little fast on this one as you had an enormous amount of material to cover) So well scripted, filmed, and edited. I downloaded the Blackmagic camera app and followed along with you during your presentation. I have had Filmic for years but will now switch as I find the Blackmagic user interface so much easier for me. It's nice to have choices. Today I received my Hohem M6 gimble and have retired my other two(based on your earlier review) received my new iPhone 15 Pro Max yesterday and need to stop watching your great review while I am still solvent. With all this new gear and software I will be busy learning the intricacies for a good while. Thanks for your hard work. I should mention that I also love your accent and could listen to you read cookbooks.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Some people are pointing out that 15 promax is not fully working with Hoham yet. So if you find it as well, just give them a few weeks they need to catch up as that phone just came out. I’m quite sure they will bring new firmware updates very soon. Enjoy your new gear and thank you so much again for your support
Filmic Pro jsem opustil po tom co se mi z placené apky stala apka s předplatným. Drobátko podraz na lidi. Takže jsem rád za free Blackmagic. Děláš Zdenko super vyčerpávající videa. :)
Just downloaded the app as a result of this video I wouldn’t probably ever film for real with my iPhone but definitely makes it a lot better to use. Thank you.
Zdenka, Your comparison just showed up in my UA-cam suggestions about an hour ago, and before I finished watching, I made my decision: I immediately *cancelled* my FilmicPro subscription, and downloaded the Blackmagic Camera app. Then I finished your review 😊 The few features are going to be missed (like Filmic Remote!), but what BMC *has* will definitely keep me happy! Thank you for letting me know, Zdenka!
I think you are the person who has explained this application best so far and you explained it wonderfully, thank you very much. 🥳👍 But there's something I'm curious about: What are the differences between the shooting quality of the Apple stock camera and the "Blackmagic" application? I hope you will prepare such content in the future.
I had already downloaded this app. Was really surprised when I saw it. Haven’t played with it yet. Your review is very helpful. I have the Legacy version of Filmic Pro on my Samsung Note 10+, and was getting ready to buy it on my new IPhone 14 when Filmic went to their subscription model. Just too expensive for me on a yearly basis. For my personal use I can’t justify the price. Excited about Blackmagic’s app. As you said, I can bet they will be adding features to it.
Yes, if you’re using it for personal purposes, then the pricing is definitely high. I do this for living and I only purchased it because it was on sale. Hopefully this app will add more features
I don't like a subscription model, and as I am not using filming apps professionally (just casual use and experimentation for learning), I am sticking to the Legacy version of Filmic (for which I paid the full price purchasing it some time ago). Unfortunately I cannot try this BlackMagic app (I do use Davinci Resolve sometimes) as I am on Android right now, but I appreciate your videos as they are really informative and in the sweet spot for both professionals and amateurs like me. Thanks!
I stuck with the legacy app as well, since I had purchased it before. I don't see the point for a subscription since even the native camera for android (especially Samsung ) has improved a lot.
Filmic Remote is a useful companion app that lets you control the camera from another iPhone or iPad. That has been very useful for me. Hope Black Magic implements similar remote control.
@@ZdenkaDarula that’s great. I look forward to the next video because you really know how to explain things in a way that people can really understand.
Thank you for the short overview 🙂. I think for me as a beginner it is for sure the Blackmagic Camera App. Maybe I will consider Filmic sometime in the future, but we will see. And sure, if Filmic Pro would still be a onetime payment, then the chances would be much higher. but for a subscription there need to be enough time spent in the app to justify that.
This looks great. The only feature missing for me is the ability to use your iPad as a controller and second screen, like Filmic Remote. If they can release an app that does that, then I’ll be switching over from Filmic Legacy. Thanks for a great video!
Thank you for that great overview. I have both apps, but right now I am using Black Magic because Filmic Pro does not allow for external recording to an SD drive (necessary for some ProRes 4k) Black Magic app allows you to record externally. Filmic pro better get on board with allowing ProRes external recording ASAP. Also, the addition of a waveform monitor would be super helpful instead of just a histogram.
I absolutely agree with the need for ssd external drive capability. So if black magic allows that I’m gonna get the app I just wish they made it for an ipad. And I hope saving presets comes ASAP!
Great Review. I learned from you that you need an external mic in order to control the audio level. And don't forget to enable "headset mic". I did not notice that yet. That's why audio control was a disappointment for me so far. Still I'd like a limiter for my iphone mic.
Hi. I just received an iPhone 15 Pro Max and what I enjoy the most is being able to just plug my DJI maic receiver directly into the USB C on the iPhone and just start filming - no messing with cables etc. I plugged in the mic receiver and opened Blackmagic Settings and the mic appeared - selected in and could adjust the gain. Yeah, that's an expensive solution but works great.
What would be the ideal settings for recording a sport demo video for my kid with Black Magic. Any recommendations thank you great video very informative.
You information delivery is always so clear, detailed and organized. Very thought out. I was hoping you would do a video on the black magic app. Thanks and love your channel.
Thank you so much for this. I'm pretty impressed with the BM app! A quick scan through the comments and I'm not seeing something that needs to be said and that is... you are absolutely beautiful.
Many thanks for this. I have been using FilmicPro for a while but this Black Magic app looks very interesting - especially as my preferred editing solution is their DaVinci Resolve 18.6 on my MAC.
I purchased Filmic Pro a while ago (before subscription) and still like the app but will only use the Legacy version. I don’t use it enough to justify paying a subscription fee. I did install the Blackmagic Camera app and also use Davinci Resolve for editing but don’t plan on using Bm cloud. I also agree that it’s highly BM will be adding features in the future as users provide feedback…
Been using the BM App and simply love it. The best thing I like is that it automatically gives me the proxy file also. I record to an external drive. This streamlined my work flow. I also can do multi camera using multiple cameras and everything is brought into Resolve for post processing with no issues. Btw this app also works on an iPad.
$50 a year for a powerhouse camera app like filmic pro is not a deal breaker for me. I will be playing with this new option from black magic. Perhaps when I become more familiar with it I will be open to using the free option exclusively. Right now efficiency is the key factor for me and filmic presents a much smoother workflow when you are in the field. The reticles are an amazing feature,HDR, and just the over all interface makes for a much more efficient work flow.
When recording something and switching cameras during the recording on my iPhone 13 Pro, I've noticed that the Front camera footage is right-side up but the rear camera footage is upside down. But, it appears right-side up in the app while filming. 🤷🏻
You mean what phone case? I switch them all the time, so don’t look at my phone cover…. I am testing different lenses from different companies so I have to switch many times phone case…
Thank you for your job! Very useful and detailed tutorials! Could you make it clear what is the difference between FilmicPro plans? I would like to buy finally annual subscription, but stiil can't decide on plan. There are like Creator plan, Director plan and the most cheapest plan. What is the difference besides the price? Thanks in advance!
The nail in Filmic Pro's coffin. I payed 50€ for an app that's already outdated and doesn't have Apple Log and doesn't get updates (The Perpetual/Legacy version). They charged extra FOR EVERYTHING. Whatever Filmic Pro features that the Blackmagic Camera app hasn't included in its FIRST free version won't be missed. I do miss gimbal integration, though. But it was never a given. If you use gimbals other than Zhiyun or DJI, you're out anyway.
Although full gimbal integration isn’t available the only part I ever use (record/stop record) is integrated. Just enable "use volume button to trigger record”, connect gimbal to phone via Bluetooth and record start/stop works.
@@ThisOldManOfTheSea True!! I've also found that a 2 people team works best for serious gimbal work. The one handling the camera gimbal worries abot photography and video settings, while the other operates the gimbal remotely from another phone's app. But I actually miss being able to use the gimbal's wheel for zooming and pull-focus.
I really like your detailed explanation it’s really helpful, I have one question is it safe to use third party camera app over default camera app I mean does it affect on camera health? thanks waiting for your answer
Simple question can you take a still photo with the black magic camera app for iphone mine only does video if i cant take a photo with it its usless to me
A game changer would be a camera that you can mount your phone to with a USB-C connection that allows the phone to act as the screen and UI for the camera. A compact, medium range zoom camera with a housing to fit smart phones straight onto the USB-C port. The phone could act as the brain and the hardware could house all of the camera components
At the moment, the focus peaking and exposure zebras in the BM app won't actually be onscreen whilst in record mode.. This needs to be addressed in the next version. Other than that, I'm really enjoying the app and rarely bother with Filmic Pro. I also use Cinema P3...
It's not distracting - it's what any professional camera operator expects. How on earth are they able to follow focus if they can't see the peaking outlines? Similarly with the exposure zebras. If you don't need them, just switch them off.@@charliesaigon
Filmic Pro Remote control is the main feature I use that Blackmagic doesn't have. As I need to record myself, I use an iPad as a monitor and remote control. It saves A LOT of time to be able to control everything and see myself in a big screen. Also, there is no option in Blackmagic to choose from Global Tone Mapping or Local Tone Mapping. It is (I guess) by default at local tone mapping (which is what the native camera app uses). I prefer to use global tone mapping as it gives a look closer to what I want most part of the times, not overprocessing darker or brighter areas.
how did you film mobile what setting and lights did you use showing mobile in camera. can you make tutorial about table top videography about shoot mobile tech review video
Hi Zdenka! Thank you so much for this video! I really appreciate it! Just got myself the blackmagic app and it’s incredible. Your review is very comprehensive and well structured. One question for you: could you elaborate on colour space please? Would you recommend rec 2020?
You are very welcome. When it comes to colour space, I’m gonna address it an upcoming tutorial as soon as I get my hands on iPhone 15 Pro… give me two or three weeks
Interesting video, thanks. I have just installed this on my phone to give it a go and use a Zhiyun Smooth gimbal. I was curious though about the pointer you use in this. Seems useful so could you give the info on it.
I stopped using filmic pro long time ago, when they brought the subscription model. I like this new app, although it has a few bugs/issues that I don’t see anyone addressing: 1) once you lock the shutter speed you no longer are able to set AUTO ISO. This is really bad, specially if you vlog a lot outside using your phone; 2) you are not able to name you video files, even if you save them into the library app; 3) it would be amazing if you could stream directly from the app to your social media
I stopped too when FilmicPro went to a subscription. Btw, 1) isn't correct you can lock the shutter and have auto iso but it isn't intuitive. Press the exposure compensation button (+/-) then select auto. The iso will be auto now.
Ahoj! I just tried it on an older 4th gen iPad pro, and it really surprised me. Using this app in combination with the *free* Davinci Resolve video editing app just made my iPad in to my new portable recording setup. On a newer iPhone or iPad, one could capture in ProRes RAW to an internal or external SSD really taking it to the next level. My opinion is that even of Filmic Pro had not gone to a subscription model, BlackMagic Design has a reputation of being not just a solid company, but one that releases a lot of updates on a regular basis and always comes out with something exciting. They'll eventually catch-up and pass Filmic in features and performance just like they did with Adobe's Premiere Pro and Final Cut NLEs.
I’ve been trying this app and love it so much more than filmic. One thing I noticed is that the aspect ratio guides are not saved after filming, so the video is stuck at 16:9. Is there a way to have the aspect rations applied to the video while filming that perhaps I’ve overseen and not noticed?
Do you need to set the setting in native 15 pro max like exposure and iso or do black magic does have have their own setting parameter and won’t affect by camera native setting?
Native camera app, and Blackmagic Cam app are two completely different applications. They don’t work together. so whatever you set up in one is not going to fact the other one at all.. they are completely separate.
Hi there....I want to use this black magic app with my iphone 15 pro max for the times when I can't use my Sony FX30...I like that I can record Pro Res LT to my Samsung SSD...question...if I wanted to use a gimbal like the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 or the Insta 360 Flow...can I use this app? those gimbals have their own apps...I'm not too familiar with gimbals for smartphones...thanks so much
You would be using gimbal to stabilize your footage with app like this. So you can use pretty much any gimbal. You would use gimbal app only if you want other things like motion, time, lapse, or tracking… I highly suggest looking into Hoham isteady m6 this one would allow you to do in this app, motion, time lapse, and also tracking
@@ZdenkaDarula thank you so much...the SSD is 60grms which added to the 15 pro max weight 221grms is over the Osmo mobile 6...almost at the limit of the Insta 360 flow too...hmm..maybe I can use a fast USB -C thumb drive instead...I will look into the Hoham for sure...I just like the compact (and cute?) factor of the Osmo mobile 6 and the flow...thanks so much. If not I will just use the phone on a mini tripod...
You can get HDR in Blackmagic Camera App. You have to shoot in ProRes and Apple Log though. I have no problem with that, as I’d much rather use ProRes and Apple Log to edit with and color correct than h.265 or h.264.
You might want to look into the Rode Wireless Pro mics. You get two transmitters and one receiver, and the receiver can send audio from each mic to left and right inputs of the iPhone.
@@RonCoy hi Ron. So I have a few Saramonic mics that work the same but for some reason the app just won’t record stereo. Have you been able to get those rose mics recording stereo with the Blackmagic app? I’m hoping I just have a setting wrong.
Filmic Pro really killed themselves when they went subscription. An app like this for free is close to a nail in the coffin for them.
Yes, I think that they are not going to be happy that this app is now available
Yep! Stopped using them after that. Blackmagic is gonna eat their lunch now with a free much easier to use product
It’s missing remote control though. With Filmic you can view and control the iPhone from an iPad or another iPhone.

Great video, and you are right Blackmagic will add new features, focus pull is already abailable.
Thank you very much for your support. Yes I have noticed the pull focus there
I purchased Filmic Pro a while ago (before subscription) and still like the app but will only use the Legacy version. I don’t use it enough to justify paying a subscription fee. I did install the Blackmagic Camera app and also use Davinci Resolve for editing but don’t plan on using Bm cloud. I also agree that it’s highly BM will be adding features in the future as users provide feedback…
That is how I look at it myself
Totally agree. I enjoy legacy and for my needs it's good. Feature set in Filmic is great though Blackmagic interate well
Legacy app doesn’t work anymore or at least for me it doesn’t. Blackmagic for the win.
Well, I refuse to pay the Filmic subscription model, so i will try this BM app!
Enjoy!
Thank you for sharing your experience
$50 a year for a powerhouse camera app like filmic pro is not a deal breaker for me. I will be playing with this new option from black magic. Perhaps when I become more familiar with it I will be open to using the free option exclusively.
Right now efficiency is the key factor for me and filmic presents a much smoother workflow when you are in the field. The reticles are an amazing feature,HDR, and just the over all interface makes for a much more efficient work flow.
Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts and experience. For me it is also a Filmic Pro.
filmic pro you can disable latency preview while cinematic stabilization, in interface menu :) no lag but have to active every time open app...
Thank you for sharing your thoughts
When recording something and switching cameras during the recording on my iPhone 13 Pro, I've noticed that the Front camera footage is right-side up but the rear camera footage is upside down. But, it appears right-side up in the app while filming. 🤷🏻
That is interesting. Thank you for sharing.
Hello Zdenka, thanks for your video, can you tell me what stilus are you using with the iPhone? thanks!
You mean what phone case? I switch them all the time, so don’t look at my phone cover…. I am testing different lenses from different companies so I have to switch many times phone case…
@@ZdenkaDarula stilus is a pen that you use when pressing the screen of the phone ☺️
Could you please make a video on how to shoot real estate videos with gimbal
Noted… adding it to the list
Thank you for your job! Very useful and detailed tutorials! Could you make it clear what is the difference between FilmicPro plans? I would like to buy finally annual subscription, but stiil can't decide on plan. There are like Creator plan, Director plan and the most cheapest plan. What is the difference besides the price? Thanks in advance!
You are very welcome. To be honest, I did not know that they came out with different plans. I have to look at it first myself.
Very informative,thank you Ma'am 😍😍
You are very welcome
The nail in Filmic Pro's coffin. I payed 50€ for an app that's already outdated and doesn't have Apple Log and doesn't get updates (The Perpetual/Legacy version). They charged extra FOR EVERYTHING. Whatever Filmic Pro features that the Blackmagic Camera app hasn't included in its FIRST free version won't be missed. I do miss gimbal integration, though. But it was never a given. If you use gimbals other than Zhiyun or DJI, you're out anyway.
I completely understand everything you’re saying
Yes there is no problem using it
Great review. App looks more intuitive than FP. I see LUTs are available to import. But what about filming in Log? FP has that as a paid option.
Yes, so far now log in this one
@@ZdenkaDarula 8 bit or 10 with rec 2020?
WOWO THANKS YOU FOR SHARING VIDEO❤
You are very welcome
You do amazing tutorials, what microphone can i connect to the iphone 14 pro, while usin smooth 5. Thank You
You can connect pretty much any microphone you want. I am not expert when it comes to microphones as I only use one brand and that is Comica
Simple question can you take a still photo with the black magic camera app for iphone mine only does video if i cant take a photo with it its usless to me
It is only for video…. Not for photography
Hi thanks for this great video. Not sure but I have not seen option to rotate to front Camera?
Yes, you can select what camera to use
Thanks for your time very nice explanation
You are very welcome
A game changer would be a camera that you can mount your phone to with a USB-C connection that allows the phone to act as the screen and UI for the camera. A compact, medium range zoom camera with a housing to fit smart phones straight onto the USB-C port. The phone could act as the brain and the hardware could house all of the camera components
Thank you for sharing your thoughts
awesome video review on both of the apps Zdenka! is it possible to shoot still photos on blackmagic?
I’m glad you liked the video. No, this app is only for video.
@@ZdenkaDarula would be great if you could introduce some manual camera apps for photography ☺️
Great video as usual, thank you.
You are very welcome
At the moment, the focus peaking and exposure zebras in the BM app won't actually be onscreen whilst in record mode.. This needs to be addressed in the next version. Other than that, I'm really enjoying the app and rarely bother with Filmic Pro. I also use Cinema P3...
I’m quite sure that they will be issuing many updates over the time.
I would find that very distracting. To each their own.
Thank you so much for sharing and explaining what do you like. I can see that you’re using the app for more serious filming…. Best wishes
I just love Black Magic Cam for my personal usage.. and it`s for free which is not bad at all!
I agree…too good to be free
how did you film mobile what setting and lights did you use showing mobile in camera. can you make tutorial about table top videography about shoot mobile tech review video
Oh, I did not shoot this with another smartphone. I use Sony camera

does it have a remote control app?
No sorry
Excellent review, Zdenka - thank you
Does this app support log recording, and if it does, where can we get the LUTs?
No, it cannot do Log yet
Yes it does support Apple Log if you record in ProRes format.
And Prolost has the LUTs you need.
@@RonCoyhow to though ?
I'm an ex Filmic Pro 6 user now on CinemaP3. While I'm a beginner, specifying presets and focus pulls are important to me.
Cinema p3 is also a great app
@@ZdenkaDarula Thank you for your response and I am in great anticipation of that video!
Hi..is hohem 6 is compatible with S24 Ultra
Yes it is
Interesting video, thanks. I have just installed this on my phone to give it a go and use a Zhiyun Smooth gimbal. I was curious though about the pointer you use in this. Seems useful so could you give the info on it.
The pointer is just screen pan you can buy in any dollar store. I hope this helps.
I love shooting in LOG3 in Filmic Pro. Waiting for Blackmagic to include
Hopefully one day
I stopped using filmic pro long time ago, when they brought the subscription model.
I think they do need to fix few things. I’m quite positive this will be all coming up within the next few weeks.
@@petercofrancesco9812 When I do press the exposure compesantion button (+/-) that option does not show up
When recording 60fps for slowmo but not having 120 shutter speed would that be a problem?
It might be choppy
Thank you for sharing your thoughts …yes, this is a great company
I’ve been trying this app and love it so much more than filmic. One thing I noticed is that the aspect ratio guides are not saved after filming, so the video is stuck at 16:9. Is there a way to have the aspect rations applied to the video while filming that perhaps I’ve overseen and not noticed?
It’s only a guide the video is recorded 16:9
Yes, it is only a guide as someone else said it’s not applied… you have to change the aspect ratio in the post
Blackmagic is the subscription killer we need. First premier pro, now filmic pro.
I hear you
Do you need to set the setting in native 15 pro max like exposure and iso or do black magic does have have their own setting parameter and won’t affect by camera native setting?
Thanks!
You are very welcome
I've been using pixel phones for the last 10 years but seriously considering switching back to iphone so I can use the BM camera app.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts
whats the best "simple" video recording app that lets you select what microphone you are using?
This one…. Sorry I don’t know other simple
Most important is that even Apple themselves used this app to record their event!
Yes, and that says a lot
@@ZdenkaDarula that’s only reason that i “trust” this application
You can get HDR in Blackmagic Camera App. You have to shoot in ProRes and Apple Log though. I have no problem with that, as I’d much rather use ProRes and Apple Log to edit with and color correct than h.265 or h.264.
Thank you for pointing it out
Hi, have you tried using external stereo mics on the Blackmagic app? Will the app record each separately or just record in mono? Great review btw.
Unfortunately, I didn’t not try that yet
@@ZdenkaDarula so far I have not been successful doing it with several types of mics.
Awesome! I'm canceling Filmic Pro. Thanks Zdenka!!
