  • Is the Mazda CX-30 the best small SUV? To find out, we match the CX-30 up against two premium compact crossover rivals: the 2020 Audi Q3 and 2020 BMW X1. If Mazda Premium is a real thing, this is where the top-spec 2020 Mazda CX-30 G25 Astina needs to be able to compete! Can a mainstream crossover take it to the luxury brands? In this video, a comparison of the 2020 CX-30, 2020 Q3 and 2020 X1, Tom looks into the practicality, dynamics and value for money of each vehicle.
Watch some of our other car comparisons:

Focus vs Mazda 3 vs Golf: • VW Golf vs Mazda 3 vs ...
Which SUV do you think is best? Would you save a few thousand and grab a high-grade Mazda CX-30? Is German your flavour, leading you to an Audi Q3 or a BMW X1? Or are you waiting for a Mercedes-Benz GLA or GLB?

The fact that Mazda has to be compared to luxury brands means Mazda has already won. The CX5 and CX30 are the best crossovers pound for pound on the market.

Been driving a CX-30 for 2 weeks here in Japan. Can’t be happier. It’s a very reliable machine, the interior is lovely and driving it is like travelling on a cloud. People complain about the cladding and it’s one of the things that make the car easier to take care of. And another thing, the quality of the engine and the transmission can’t be compared to the new crappy things BMW and Volkswagen have been making for some years.

@@peterjordan2738 90% of body damage occurs where they put the cladding--like on raptors or offroad vehicles.Much easier to replace a 100 dollar plastic panel vs an 800 dollar quarter panel.Quarter panel repairs are the most common repair 2nd to bumpers---I have a CX-30 and now do not have to worry about the quarter panels getting dinged up with rocks.the plastic also resists damage much better then paint. Also post your car then comment so you would be more believable beta.

Being a person who drove all of these cars, and finally ended up leasing the CX-30, I´d like to chip in. In my mind, there is no question about the winner: The CX-30.
    Let me explain why:
There are so many things you get, in the CX-30, that you dont, in these entry level "premium" brands.
I'll start with the things that this review doesnt put weight on at all, or dont mention. The head up display! Its standart in all levels of the CX-30, and in the Cosmo edition (thats the name of the top model in Denmark where i live), its no different. Yes, you dont get wireless carplay (which is fixable with a 70 dollar dongle), and you dont get carplay navi in the head up display. But... you DO with the build in navi, which isnt at all bad. Traffic sign detection, blind spot assist, navigation, adaptive cruise control... all of this, is present in the head up display, and i absolutely love it!
Secondly, theres the audio system. He mentioned it briefly, but you do get a 12 speaker Bose setup with subwoofer in this, and it absolutely is one of the best sound systems out there. It competes with B&O and burmeister etc. The sound systems in the entry levels of the other 2 are horricfic at best.
Thirdly, The engine. When you go for the Cosmo edition, you also get access to Mazdas new Skyactive-X engine, with SPCCI. Long story short, you get the torque from a diesel, and the horses from a petrol on higher revs. I drove a long drive (600 km) and ended up on 5,6 l/100 km. It has 181 horsepower.... Think about those numbers.
With the Cosmo edition, you also get flappy pedal gear changers, for those tho want that, and dark sidepillars. You also get the signature lights front and back, which looks awesome. Full LED all around.
Then theres the adaptive high beam control. I think it has 18 fully adaptive LEDs in the front, which seamlessly blocks some of the highbeam, in ongoing traffic. It works like a charm!
Lastly, i wanna mention the cameras in this car. The review didnt show it, but its actually VERY hd feeling. All around, the cameras are very high quality, and updates with like 30 fps. It just leaves you with a feeling of quality, that none of the others do. They have SD resolution at best, and only reverse camera... not 360, like the CX-30 does.
I could actually go on and on about this, as this review fails to mention alot of the benifits of the Mazda compared to the to others. Like being the most quiet in the cabin....
I have no understanding whatsoever, that the conclusion should be the Audi. I agree that an Audi in stop spec wins, hands down, but thats not the question here.... is it? Trust me, theres a a reason why the CX-30 was in the runnings for car of the year.
Only things i really would have liked theres to be present in the CX-30, to make it my favorite car, is massaging seats, Ambient lighting and a more powerful engine. I actually dont think i would have taken a top specced Audi or BMW over the Mazda then.... if it had those things. :)

Great review, fact is that for either BMW or Audi to directly compare features they cost around 15 to 20k more. They have 3 year warranties and at least the BM doesn’t have a spare wheel. The Mazda rates higher for passenger safety and has a higher resale value and lower servicing cost. Mazda in customer satisfaction surveys rate significantly higher than the Germans. What sets the Germans apart is badge or snob value. The CX30 wins clearly for me because I place, value, safety and quality ahead of a badge.

The conclusion is clear, this CX30 is at least a clear equivalent (if not slightely better) to the Q3 or a base X1 as premium/luxury SUV. But in my opinion; considering if we go for a long period owning period (many years), value for money, the quality of exterior/interior design and the reliability of the brand (Mazda is known as a step over), the CX30 (top trim level) is a natural better choice. I've driven all 3 of these cars (in diff trims). I was thrown off by the comments about the ride. I drove an X1 right after test driving a Q3 and found the Q3 to be mushier, and boncier. The X1 felt worlds more confident and direct in how it drove. It was like driving a family sedan and then going to a grand-touring vehicle.

The biggest thing the Mazda comes standard with is reliability. It will start every time. Maintenance will be limited to the basic stuff for the first 200,000 miles and both repairs and maintenance will cost a fraction of that of the other two. Others are bigger, but, I need a car that will start every time and not be in the shop too often.

Not only are they much cheaper than German cars if specified like for like but I actually think they are better cars. My current car is an Audi A6 and quality has been very disappointing, with economy about 40% below what was claimed.

Mazda punched above its class with features like 4-way automatic windows, memory seats, rear vents, and power lift gate. They ought to continue to match base-spec features of German cars in at least their top trim. These would include adjustable armrest, rear power supplies, and better rear door materials.
If adding these to the base spec means raising the cost by ~$2k, then still go for it. Upon seeing a higher base price than Japanese rivals, people will look to see why, and then be impressed.

BMW X2 and Audi Q2 are both much better match for Mazda CX-30, at least space-wise. All 3 are members of the new and growing big small SUV family, also including e.g. Kia accede on European market and VW T-Rpc coming soon to Australia. But both X1 and Q3 are full-blown competitors to CR-V and RAV4. If you still have the RAV4 long-term we, you could make another comparison video and see for yourself that they complete on almost equal terms, especially with the insane on-road pricing for RAV-4, with zero rebates due to crazy demand :)
PS. BMW is a great really practical SUV with a lot of grunt even in the 20i version (I am driving its 220i Gran Tourer sibling), but the adaptive suspension DOES NOT add comfort (confirmed by a BMW dealer). It only adds more grip in sportier modes, but in comfort mode the tune is the same as for normal suspension.

I’ll be picking up my CX-30 this week. I live in the UK and the price difference between the two models is much greater (£7,000 on base models). I have an almost top of the range spec (GT Sport in the UK) and this is still cheaper than a base model Q3. I’m 28 and want something more than a VW Polo or similar type of car and for the equipment and spec you get I don’t think you can beat the Mazda. I’m also a bit old school and don’t want touch screen everything or turbo charged engines. I would have gone for the Mazda 3 but I think the space inside for me (6ft 1) is a little tight on headroom plus the large C pillar is too big although the car looks great. The 30 is the perfect size for me and my partner and really feels like the high end luxury cars for a fraction of the price.

Did you finally get the Cx-30? I am in the UK too and after waiting endlessly a genuine confirmation of delivery of my ordered Yaris cross GR sport, I am thinking of cancelling it and getting a Mazda Cx-30 X sport tech. How has 2years of ownership been for you? The driving experience and mileage? Any electrical failures or issues? I don't expect you to have engine problems in 2years tho. More interested in the gimmicky electronic things. Do they run haywire?

    • @jeffcobb8151

@@bobbe7910 I did and really liked it. I actually traded in for an A3 recently for a multitude of reasons mainly needing to get out of the deal due to high mileage. There were a few niggly things though. I had done around 25k miles.
      1) I had an issue with the water pump which was replaced under warranty but still a bit annoying. You don’t get great after sales care, or at least I didn’t but show me someone that did and I’ll show you a liar…
      2) Maybe it was just mine but the finish on the steering wheel started coming off. Made for a horrible feel.
      3) The remote central locking was iffy. I had run the battery flat twice accidentally (by locking in the wrong order) and after both times I then had issues with the keys not locking when you walk away and the keyless entry. I tried everything to fix it but no luck.
      4) boot space is pathetic and the seats are a bit of a faff to fold down but it isn’t actually that big a car.
      5) the overall quality of the build didn’t seem great. Doors sounded like they can fall off at any time. I suspect there were nice pieces of trim and finishes covering up not great bits.
There were brilliant things though. The drive was fantastic if very sluggish but I would challenge anyone to find a comfier car than that. Its also spacious with plenty of space for phones, keys etc all being away whilst driving and around the cockpit. If it wasn’t for poor service and Mazda no being open on the Sunday that I wanted to sort my deal I would have had a serious look at another Mazda, maybe the CX-5 but the above things did put a little doubt in my mind.
Personally if the toss up was between a Yaris or a CX-30 I would go with the CX-30 8 days a week. The list of safety features are unmatched as well as driving aides. Every car should have the infotainment navigation that this car has (twisty wheel) as its MUCH easier to use than a touchscreen.
For ref I had the GT Sport Tech with Skyactiv X manual. 25k miles in 18 months driving 30 miles per day on average. I got around 43mpg but have a heavy foot. Motorway driving was great and around 50mpg with cruise control set to 70-73mph.

@@jeffcobb8151 thank you so much for your detailed reply. I am getting a similar spec but auto. This is the second time I would see complaints about the steering wheel leather peeling off. The electronics are also a usual complaint. The engine appears bullet proof and hardly any complaints. The dealership are so rigid and give very very little for bargaining and behave like they wouldn't mind if they don't get to sell the car. I am already preparing my mind for an atrocious aftersales service and I hope I won't get to need them beyond routine service. The safety features are simply gorgeous. I drive myself alone 70-90% of the time as most of my friends own cars and they love to drive them (enthusiasts). They LL rather we all go in a convoy than save fuel and the environment. Only horrendous parking would debatebly change their mind. I don't need back space often n I wouldn't log anything around with it. I don't see any of that changing in 3years. It unlikely I abuse it or drive tons with it.
I usually prefer leisurely driving and coming from a previously well equipped, reliable but noisy CVT, I am already anticipating a sweet, quiet ride. Hope I can update you in 2-3years if the dealership don't change their mind or throw more spanners into an already difficult haggling process.

@@bobbe7910 interesting regarding the steering wheel. It seems a very basic thing to get right and not something easily fixable after the event.
All dealers give shoddy after sales care. I’ve heard bad stories up to Lamborghinis level of dealerships. They’re even bad with new sales with my local Mazda not open 50% of the weekend!
All in all I would recommend the CX-30. Maybe the next release of model will be better and the niggly things gone. As for engine issues, if you buy new its under warranty so any problems you’ll be ok. Not sure what it would be like post 3 years.

Mazda cx-30 starts @ $21,900 and goes up to $29,245
    (USD)
Audi q3 starts @ $34,700 and goes up to $47,000
    (without options)
Q3 is 35-40% more expensive across the whole line, no matter how you look at it, it's more expensive to run and maintain, and the base Q3 still doesn't have all the kit of the highest trim CX-30 - like adaptive cruise control, HUD, auto-dimming mirrors, top view camera system, power folding heated and auto-dimmed mirrors, extra safety features, or adaptive LEDs, for instance (though the q3's infotainment and virtual cocpit is great). And if you don't need all the extra stuff on the audi, then you don't need them on the mazda - go a trim or two down on the CX-30, and now you'll see a bigger difference in price. Now I'm not a fan of the CX-30, cause its huge plastic cladding is too much for me, but I think that the Mazda is the better value here.

Looks-wise, the CX30 vastly outshines the opposition and is a great drive. I haven't driven the other two, but one point never mentioned on these tests is reliability. Would I trust a BMW or Audi to be as good as a Mazda? I don't think so.

Let's end in yearly cost to maintain. Mazda would be by far the least to keep up and repair. The other two, after the warranty is gone, so is any value. Cost to own is a factor.

Varies so substantially between markets. I can tell you that the Mazda is about half the price to service at present prices, but the Audi and BMW allow you to purchase up-front servicing for five years that is transferrable to new owners, at 2020 prices, whereas Mazda reserve the right to change their service prices in future

@@chasingcars My only real observation having owned all three brands, for a daily driver, the expense-besides service is repair cost. You can literally buy the Audi and BMW twice in repairs and they are repair heavy compared to the average Mazda. And honestly, the Mazda for the initial price is as good as it gets. Just my humble opinion.

The CX5 is bigger and better and faster than the Q3 and the X1 and costs less. The CX 5 Signature would be a better comparison than the smaller CX30. It has a 228 hp engine and outperforms both the Q3 as the X1 easily, and has more inside room and is more reliable.

At the end of the day people would still choose Audi or BMW for the price of the Mazda. Awesome review as always.

Well, the problem is, you won't get Q3 nor X1 for the price of CX-30. Flagship Mazda is $4K cheaper than both entry level competitors. Comparably spec'd Audi & BMW would probably be $10K more expensive. As BNE YARB mentioned in his above comment, Q3 starts in real life at $55K.

    1. If we can talk about maintenance, that'll make the comparison more helpful, too.
    2. Too bad I can't make a donation to the video.
