Hi, I need little help from you. I own xc60 gasoline mild hibrid 2022 year. Discovered the problem its impossible switch off the door mirrors folding when locking and unlocking the car. I need switch off that function in winter when car get ice all over around. The volvo deller in my country saying that in no option on xc60, but in xc40 and xc90 its working.
@@autogefuehl Thomas, really, man...you look like stereotypical Dracula from hollywood movies, just need a bit longer hair like previously, and some teeeth...really and a hood)))))
I could listen to this guy talk all day! I want him to read everything in my life! His voice is so calming. And that German/ Austrian? Accent is perfection.
I had a 2021 xc40 inscription and loved it, upgraded to a 2022 xc60 rdesign b6 and have to say love it even more, bigger interior, I find it more comfortable, more powerful, more responsive due to being a mild hybrid, air suspension, much better product, but then it’s an upgrade and more expensive. Still love both types.
We have both cars in the family. The XC60 is significantly more comfortable in the back with a more reclined seating position. Also the suspension is softer and more compliant in the XC60 (with conventional springs). Both are great cars.
Fully agree Nick. Have both as well. The XC40 is very lovable and the size is more practical in the city. But XC60 is more comfortable. Especially the airsuspension knocks the XC40 out of the park. And the seating in the back us indeed better. The first thing wife and children mentioned when they took place.
@@mossab8209My VIN is YV1, which is Sweden, but they have a large factory in Belgium too. I think the Chinese factory is used to service the Asian market.
We are looking to buy a new car and literally just drove the XC40 T8 Recharge, comparing it with the XC60 T8 Inscription. Your review is timely and as usual, excellent Thomas. We found the T8 XC40 has a dynamic and responsive drive, great acceleration, but the regen is unusably harsh. Dealer told us the XC60 can run in all electric mode, which it can, BUT in that mode it has less power than a base mini, which is far lighter. To get full power you have to put up with the clattery four-pot and driven like that, has only slightly more mpge than my 2009 335i. No tangible advantage. You’re mostly right about Volvo’s seat materials but we differ: we think Volvo had a huge problem. We found the R-Design Alcantara option too firm, too hot (it’s made from used plastic bottles) and the black shows every single piece of dirt. There is leather available on the XC60, which is superb and the seats are fantastic, so we need to talk about“animal free….” Firstly, Volvo’s going away from leather because they say it can’t be recycled. This is completely wrong. It can be, so it’s unclear why Volvo are taking this move. Secondly, it doesn’t save a single cow to avoid leather, because the consumption of milk and beef won’t change, so now you’ll have to landfill the hide instead of using it, which then off-gasses, thus increasing GHGs. Thirdly, leather is part of the current carbon cycle and recycling can be structured to sequester carbon, thus reducing GHGs, so it’s a sustainable product, whereas Alcantara is a fossil fuel product that increases GHGs. Fourthly leather has superior appearance and resilience, making its life cycle at least as good as, if not superior to, plastic. Fifthly if Volvo is to compete as a premium brand it has to offer leather as a premium option and not doing so puts them at a disadvantage. All three Volvo dealers I spoke to said they have lost sales through not having leather. Lastly, remember that it’s only the seat surface that would be leather, so any recycling difference is a minuscule fraction of the car: but an extremely important and obvious one for many buyers. So can I encourage you to rethink “animal free” because when you look at the overall environmental, animal and financial impact, leather remains a suitable and sustainable option. I thus respectfully diverge from your conclusion (and having led sustainable initiatives in use in 117 countries, I do know a bit about this). The next big problem not in your review is that Google Automotive is a really poor system. It’s hyped on the ability to tell Google to do things, but we found the instructions are often misinterpreted. Worse, you have to tell anyone else in the car to stop talking while you give instructions. Try telling your wife to be quiet while you talk to the car and you’ll get the picture. The Google map in the driver’s binnacle is not useful as it’s difficult to read with bad contrast, tiny text and the contrast, perspective, text and zoom cannot be changed. It’s also laggy. You can remove the map, but this leaves an inadequate screen with minimal information, for example on the XC40 T8 there is, unbelievably, no remaining distance meter, which is on every single other BEV and is fundamental with batteries. You can see this on the centre screen, but it’s buried in the menus. Try flipping between needed menus, maps, media and controls at 120k and it can get dangerous. On the XC60, it’s compounded by needing to use drive modes, which used to have a switch (removed for the 2022 year), so you now have to go through menus to get this… as a result you are always tapping through menus when you should be watching the road. Bad concept. Dangerous. In our view centralizing so much in the Android system is dangerous and thus, the exact opposite of Volvo’s safety ethos. So what did we conclude? The hybrid XC60’s engine is just not great. Lots of power but noisy and far too complex, increases GHGs and dependent on the Android system’s (awful) design. The XC60 looks great, with great build and quality, but it’s flawed. The XC40 has no good seat choices and again, Android Automotive, lacking key information for a BEV and usability that used to be in Volvo’s own in-house predecessor system. Again for our money, major flaws. In our configuration: XC60 C$92,000. XC40 C$80,000. So which did we choose? Neither. Despite so much that’s right, especially the design, the seats and Google system’s were insuperable flaws. We are now looking again at the Audi e-tron, where range and excessive creaking plastic at this price are problems. BMW too ugly; three years for EV6. And so on. Maybe we’ll just have to wait, but for us, Volvo’s direction looks likely to rule it out forever. Too bad.
I would like for Thomas to engage with you. Your point of view is interesting, especially with regards to the sustainability. I am also not sure about the issue regarding wool as we often purchase wool jerseys. Will us not buying or using the wool from the sheep stop those farms existing? I also do consume meat on a few days a week and not at all due to religious practices, so I'm not saint but I am aware my meat consumption is far lower than many people around the developed world. Would love to hear more from you around these issues. Also, how is that 335i doing?
I mean sustainability is all nice and dandy to talk about and I can put this or that in my car... but why does all the "blame" lie on the "little guy" ? EU just put a draft of a law that exempts private planes from fuel tax. Hmm, wonder who that benefits. I should buy a wannabe eco plug in hybrid for insane amounts of money that doesn't even have good economy like you said, but jeff bezos built a 120 meters yacht that costs 400 million dollars. Hmm, alrighty then. I should get taxed for my c02 when big corporations destroyed 90% of Madagaskar forests and animals, 20% of Amazon forests, etc. They're closing nuclear plants and then going back to opening coal plants. In the year 2022 the EU says to take 5 min showers and use less energy while all the politicians travel 20 000 kms by private planes a month. Hmm, okay. In Switzerland people were protesting the WEF because "the elite" came to the conference by EV's and guess how they came to the Switzerland ? Yep, everyone with private planes. Who's being brainwashed here ?
@@dwade3202 Exactly. I'm sure their private jets are using plenty of leather too. I personally think the wool looks great and would consider it if available on a brand I purchase.
Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. Please tune in to what the animal leather industry tried to do here with our channel: ua-cam.com/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/v-deo.html In general, depending on the animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat would be the reason no.1 in other cases, the hide remains one of the most profitable body parts. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you accept it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and destroys the environment, you make them more profitable. Also, if you turn the argument around "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize how biased the argument is. After all, would you care for which exact body part you would be murdered? Or imagine someone robs you on the street and beats you to death - would it matter to you if it was for your Smartphone or for your purse? The animal agriculture industry occupies 2/3 of all farm land on this planet which cannot be used for direct human nutrition then. That is extremely inefficient. The no.1 cause for deforestation is the animal industry. It is also one of the biggest contributor to climate change. The amount of land, resources, energy and water being used is beyond imagination. If you are interested in how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: ua-cam.com/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/v-deo.html Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally. For the alternative, you can either use artificial fabrics which can be made from recyclables (we have already shown a lot of vehicles that use great fabric seats from PET-bottles etc.) or more and more also from plant-based materials (like Pinatex or Desertex or Miriam). And even if you would create a seat completely with petroleum without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is nothing in comparing just to once fueling up your car. By ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) %. So it is the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable. In practical reasons, fabric or microfibre seats are just more useful. You do not sweat in summer and it is not cold in winter. And if you want the slick look or something to wipe clean easier, that is possible with animal free leatherette, even in ventilated options. And there are also new leatherette materials available which are superior in every aspect: ua-cam.com/video/u94YXJ72UTA/v-deo.html More and more natural materials are rising: ua-cam.com/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/v-deo.html or ua-cam.com/video/yG3z7m6UqNg/v-deo.html Using animal skin on seats is a major issue of animal rights, human rights - and after all it is just common sense what is better both for the environment and just more practical and more luxurious for the customer. We cannot change what we have bought in the past (that also counts for ourselves of course!), but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.
I respect your opinion but I have to disagree. I have a XC60 full Equip, and this week I have driven xc40 for 5 days. My impressions are: Cabin space larger in xc60 specially drivers position for legs. Bowers and wilkins much better than Harman Kardon, specially in low frequencies response and sharp and crisp perfect balanced mid and hi. Much better I would say. No comparison here if you like music. Air suspension and double glass windows make xc60 a more silent and relaxing driving experience than xc40. Behavior also better with xc60 and air suspension, in bends particulary. More luxury feeling in xc60 inscription, is like being at your living room. In general I would say that price gap is justified imho. I would pay it, despite xc40 is a great car. Good channel.
Wool is way way more breathable than any artificial fabric. It keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. There is absolutely nothing unethical about sheep existing or giving sheep a hair cut for the summer.
www.google.com/search?q=whats+wrong+with+wool If we keep a sheep as a pet like a dog and visit the sheep's barber and he takes care of it, sure no problem. But the problem is that wool is gained in an industrial scale where sheep are connected to mass factory farming and are suffering massively. There is a reason why the manufacturer Kvadrat does not reveal their sources where their wool is coming from, I have asked them multiple times and they refuse to tell me.
@@autogefuehl Should we be reconsidering purchasing wool jerseys? I'm not particularly sure what not buying the wool will do to reduce the animals killed for meat consumption. Will it not just drive up the price of lamb and mutton?
To really compare the audio sound quality of the Harmon Kardon to the Bowers and Wilkns you need to play a full 24 bit track that's not compressed at all, and set the equalizer to your preference. I am telling you the B&W is by far leaps and bounds in the sonic sound scape you can distinguish.
What made you change Thomas about B&W sound system?! As in your previous Volvo's review I listened you saying that B&W is the best sound system in the business, which worth paying extra, now HK its better?! :) I also think aesthetically apart of the sound, the center speaker and speaker metal grills compliments the cabine.
Great review. I have driven both and decided to buy the XC40. I have not been disappointed in any way. Comfortable, trouble free, easy to drive whether short or long distance. Previous vehicles owned include 2021 S60 T6, 2018 S90 T5, 2015 Sso T5, Bmw 528, 2010 and 2012, Saab 9-5's 2002, 05 and 2008. Of them all I am enjoying the XC40 the most.
Greatly appreciate the thorough, comprehensive, neutral and honest review and comparison in terms of various aspects. It helped me lots choose one. I was still debating myself between 40 and 60. Thanks again!
Excellent review and useful detailed comparison - as always! I have owned an XC40 T3 for the last two years and as my first Volvo I have been extremely happy with the car, especially the seat comfort and overall ride and drive comfort. I have been thinking about the XC60 as a potential upgrade but given your review I will remain with my XC40. My only comment is that rear breakpads have worn to 70% in 15k miles of driving. This is apparently a known trait of this model. The City Safety system is a little bit aggressive with invoking breaking when not required and I beleive this adds wear to the rear disk pads. Other than that point, I am very pleased with the XC40.
@@thehellcat On smooth motorway tarmac the noise levels are low running on the standard 18 inch alloys. (Lower noise level than my previous BMW 5 series 520D xdrive). On rough surfaces the noise levels do increase as with most cars but not too much
@@Brightsparks1960 thanks a lot man! One more question - have you ever tried it on cobblestone roads? I have a bit of these around and my cx-5 is just terrible for that. Got a chance to try xc-60 and it's quite good but I can't get xc40.
@@thehellcat I think you would find the ride a bit uncomfortable on cobbles as the stiffer suspension on an XC40 R Design does translate into more vertical up and down movement. An inscription or one of the newer models with standard suspension may be ok
We had a Volvo XC40, it was our first SUV & we miss it, especially in the winter, it could take snow/ice/anything like it was on dry pavement🤯. We now have a 2021 AMG G63 & it doesn’t even compare, yeah odd. Miss the trash can too lol. If you’re wanting a vehicle that can do it all & looks amazing & isn’t expensive(in terms of luxury) them the XC40 is amazing.
Want to know how luxury is back seat in g63. Never seen any good reviews of back seat. Everyone talks about infotainment and driver seat. Does it has anything like massage or ventilation or any luxury feature in second row of g63?
I own a XC40 T5 4x4 with the Polestar tuning package (Petrol, 2l, 4 cyl, 250 PS, 400 Nm torque) for a little bit over 2.5 years now (it's an "early 2020" model). Based on the Momentum trim in Glacier Silver with some additional stuff, I can honestly say it's by far the best car I ever owned and I did own a few already (Subarus, VWs, Skodas, Mazdas, other Volvos). I can't compare it to the XC60 as I never drove one of those. The engine is absolutely amazing and the automatic gear box (8 speed) is the best I ever owned. For the two of us, the size of the car and the interior is 100% perfect and the boot even fits my wheel chair without the need to fold down the rear seats, which is of course very important for me. I also like the design of the XC40 and the build quality is superb. The ride quality is very good and comfortable. Also the seats are near perfect for me and my wife.
@@michelebicc6983 Fuel consumption is ok. We don't really care or we would have bought the diesel engine. ;) Considering our road profile (about ⅓ is in towns at 50 km/h, the rest is out of town at 80 km/h, seldom highways at 120 km/h), the tires (the standard 18" wheels) and the weight of the car, I think 8.3 litre/100 km on summer wheels and 8.9 litre/100 km on winter wheels is acceptable. It's not a very economic car but I think for being a small SUV / Cross Over this is OK. Of course you can get a better fuel consumption depending on the style of your driving and with the B4 (formerly called T4 by Volvo) engine. Mind you, we have the most powerful engine for the XC40 and of course it wants to be fed. ;)
@@michelebicc6983 I have a B4 FWD and have done 4000 km in it so far, with a total fuel consumption of 6.0 l/100 km. All types of driving - motorways, main roads, rural roads, city streets. I've been very positively surprised by the fuel economy, expected something in the range of 7-8. The mild hybrid seems to make a surprisingly big difference - so don't be put off by reports of the old non-hybrid XC40s not being very efficient. Obviously if you go for the AWD that will reduce efficiency slightly, but probably not by much.
@@chachar7458 Wow, 6 l/100km is really great! I didn't expect the hybrid to help with fuel consumption as much. 👍 I sure didn't want to put anyone off by my post with the fuel consumption of my XC40 T5 AWD. Mine is a classic petrol only engine (no hybrid) with a classic "old-style" 8 speed automatic gear box (no double clutch system, thank god for that as I really HATE the double clutch gear boxes) and it's also the Polestar tuned and it's also AWD so of course it's a bit thirsty. We did know that in advance but my wife and I just don't care about it in any way. Also I guess I could get the fuel consumption easily down by another 0.5 to 0.75 l/100 km if I would drive more "carefully" or rather economical. 😉 But then... I have way too much fun using all those 250 PS and 400 Nm driving the car. 😂 I did own a Volvo S40 T5 (2.5 l, 5 cyl petrol engine) in 2007 with Bilsport engine tuning (Stage 3) and Heico exhaust once and it was a real animal and a beast (>300 PS and >450 Nm torque). This one did use about 10 l/100 km but was much lighter and only FWD. So I still think the fuel economy of my current XC40 T5 AWD is OK. My first car ever in the early 1990s was a Subaru Station Wagon AWD (2nd generation L-Series, year 1984 model) with a 4 cyl 1.8 l boxer turbo petrol engine and a 3 speed automatic gear box. It did only have 120 PS but sure as hell had a terrible fuel consumption of about 13 l/100 km. It was way weaker, smaller and much lighter than my XC40 T5 but still used much more fuel. So we have come a long way and I'm happy. 😀
I would personally say whilst the XC40 is a cool car, the XC60 is a very nice step up in how much more mature the vehicle feels. Bit better materials used too.
I would take both to be honest, the XC40 is a Suv for young people like me and the XC60 is just so classand is for young and middle aged people as well,i do have a special place in my heart for the XC60 so i would buy it with a D5 AWD Polestar tuned and Inscription trim with wood and beige seats :D Keep up the good reviews Thomas,i hope to meet you in my town in Karlovac,Croatia :D
I appreciate attention to details in your videos. I just ordered XC40 Twin Engine Recharge as my next lease (XC90 currently) and was considering the light wool seats - but at the last moment I changed to black micro-fiber, as dealer warned me that those might get dirty with my small children using them in the back. I also went for Ultimate version (the only one with 360 camera!) that has sunroof that should make it more bright inside. Your video seems to confirm my decision. So please keep doing the comparisons and comment on different versions of the same vehicle - colors, features etc. This is a strong point of your videos. It is also fine if you go into detail like the Settings. For example Creep Mode or not for One Pedal Driving. I think Creep + Break is more precise when parking at the exact spot - than just stopping using One Pedal. Greetings from Sweden!
I am so glad you compared both together as I have now decided to go for the XC40 Hybrid although living in Poland 😮there are only 9 EV Chargers! Why? Well as 2030 is approaching the new government hopefully will announce plans for an EV Network and even a Special offer to convert to Clean non fossil fuel (Although the president did announce to the World that Poland had enough Coal for 200 years which suggests Coal will be the will be the new standard? 😢
What a great review! And precisely what I need. I'm looking for a company car and both are option (thou XC60 with slightly less options). And I couldn't decide because, to be honest I find XC60 a more handsome car, but reality is I don't need the extra space that much and parking space is a real issue. An everyday struggle. After your video I think I Will go for 40. One thing that I find much better in XC60 is the boot top shelf, which in xc40 is a traditional hard shelf, whereas on XC60 is a more practical soft roll cover. This is important since the boot is shallow. Anyway, the best review, I enjoyed it all the way. Gruesse aus Kroatien.
Brilliant video, nice to see some personality in the video and it’s very comprehensive view on both cars. I like my XC40 R-design 1.5ltr petrol, but always look up to the XC60 as a next step but want an all electric. Maybe I’ll wait. Both lovely cars. Thanks for the great videos.😊
Are these engines turbocharged, supercharged, amd hybrid? I have seen some Volvos with all that in one engine. I doubt it will be as reliable as old Volvos. And my own experience with modern Volvos really puts my doubts in.
Very thorough as always, Thomas. Currently driving an XC90, but am thinking of downgrading to an XC60 when my lease is up. Would love a comparison between XC60 and XC90. Edit: I wanted to add that I found the suspension in the XC90 to be very firm and likely also due to the 21inc wheels, I feel pretty much every imperfection on the road. The noise sealing is not that great, especially on the highways.
I just bought a slightly used 2.0L XC40 T5 Inscription, and my wife bought a new 2.0L mild hybrid XC60 B5 Ultimate with the HUD. The XC40 drives like a go cart. For me it is almost too fast, as I have a tendency to be stupid in a fast car. It's fast on takeoff. We both traded Fords. Me a 2.0L 240HP Fusion AWD with an average 23MPG. My Fusion wasn't fast. Slow kick down, and you had to push it hard to get it to go up hills. My wife traded a twin turbo 3.5L 350HP Explorer Sport. Nice car, but after 7 years it began to have very expensive electrical problems, and a known looming water pump issue. My weekly gas bill has dropped by 50%, and I get up to 40MPG going to work. In the Fusion I was once able to hit 25MPG freeway by semi-hypermiling. My wife said she used to use 2 gallons of gas a day, but now those two gallons get her to work and back for three days. City she gets 30MPH. The new GUI is much better than the old one, but the XC60 has the auto stop feature that can't be turned off unless you put it in the performance (Polestar) mode. The safety features are exceptional. They really do protect you from the other utter morons out there on the road. I used to utterly detest driving, but now I am starting to almost enjoy it again.
I have a ton of experience with the 40 and driven the 60, as well. The 60 is more put together. It feels like a true luxury car. A nice place to be. Quieter. Solid as a tank. This is also it's weakness, which is why I'd take the 40 any day. While the 40 is not as nice, it's still quite nice and worthy of being a luxury offering. The main thing is it's fun to drive! The steering on the volvos is nothing to write home about, sure, but the 40 is quite playful and takes to corners rather easily. That shorter wheelbase and lighter curb weight have much to do with it. And because it tends to have morebody roll, that adds to the fun! The 60 is much more solid, like driving a tank, but that defeats the purpose of fun driving. Overall, I'd take the 40 despite some shortcomings. If I had to take the 60, I'd trade it in and find something else that can better balance luxury with fun driving!
Nice review! Xc40 t2 owner, all in all an ok family car. Decent fuel economy driving smoothly. Excessive oil consumption fixed and turbo replaced by the dealer under warranty. Have some doubts though small engines will prove as reliable as old gen ones carrying a 2t car.
Wow Thomas, really, you like the Harman-Kardon system more than the B&W? I habe the HK in my XC40 and never heard the B&W but from what I heard so far (other channels) the B&W is much better 🤷🏽♂️ In any case, great side-by-side comparison 👍🏼 Waiting for the XC60 full electric ☺️ Since when XC40 has dual insulation glass? I have the XC40 P6 and it does not have dual insulation glass and it was not an option (MY2022)
I have the B & W in my XC60 T8, and it's indeed a much more "pure" and "correct" audio experience. But the HK is, to me, maybe more of a people pleaser, more engaging with certain types of music, more tuned to sound "good" than 100% correct. When I got the B & W many songs that sounded really good on HK just sounds lifeless. On the other hand, other songs really benefit from the super clarity and precision of the B & W 🤷🏼♂️
It can be viewed in two different ways. Some feel like your father and some feel like me where the large middle console has a lot of space for both the driver and passenger to rest their arm there.
I’m on my 3 xc60. And love it. Looked at genesis but discovered they have so many rear differential problems I stayed away from it. I also looked at the GLC, but didn’t think the price for all the plastic was worth it.
Thomas, thank you for the great review ! Now, just a brief question. I am considering a used Volvo now, probably XC40 ( your reference is just reassuring at my decision). The question is - should I go for a AWD as opposed to FWD, how much does it add at XC40 ? Do you have a personal experience wit AWD in XC40 ? Thank you for your opinion
Owning an XC60 for 2month now, and it's the worst purchase I have made in my entire life! 1- You buy a Volvo for its safety. However, for a very simple task like switching steering assist on and off, you must go to the deepest parts of the menu via the touch screen while driving. That's not what I call the safety focus of a brand! 2- Android system for cars is a joke at the moment. In the past two months, I had to hard reset the infotainment system (I learned it thanks to the Volvo owners forums) to resolve issues like Lost GPS signal, Malfunctioning Air conditioning in the middle of summer, voice command not responding etc... Have I not known about this hard reset, I had to take the brand new 90K car to dealer at least five times! 3-There are buttons that do nothing, and I have the highest spec possible. There are two on the steering wheel, as arrows to the left and right and do absolutely nothing! Why? Is it because you deleted an option or changed some setups? Then respect your customer and remove those buttons! 4- Driving dynamics aren't comparable to the ones of BMW, Build quality is not close to the one of AUDI and design is not close to GLC... Safety is what remains, and You buy Volvo because of it! Then, with that touch screen and removing every single button on the car, safety is more of the past story for Volvo! Worst and the most expensive purchase of my life!
Those arrows on the wheel used to change between ACC / Pilot Assist - the very thing you griped about having to do in the menus now; ironic, isn't it? It's an incredibly stupid decision by Volvo and nobody can understand why they did that. It annoys me no end 😡
@@patrikstenberg34Thanks for the info Patrik; and indeed it's ironic :D I can't think of any logic behind it. Maybe they wanted to save some money on the wiring between the steering wheel and main module! A total nonescnece!
Same here, worst purchase of my life.. I got my XC60 T8 recharge in March, since then it's been on service 3 times. Powertrain issues in the middle of the highway, issue with the lights & the worst - the damn system keeps crashing on me. Everything shuts down, GPS, music, AC.. appearantly this is because of some software issue. The system is ANYTHING but reliable. I've literally had this car for 6 months, how they have not fixed that issue by now is beyond me. What the actual fu** are they doing in volvo HQ? Recently we got the apple carplay right, of course that does not work either. Software issue, nothing happens when I plug my phone in. A complete joke! I am giving this a couple of more weeks then I will return this piece of trash
@@rasmusk537 Sorry to hear about your horrible experience Rasmus. I also experienced one today: the washing nozzle of the front left light didn't retract! It's hilarious that we experience these issues in a brand new vehicle. I strongly think this is because of the pressure of Chinese management on the brand to push the cars to the thirsty market without proper QC. I wish I had the option of returning the vehicle as you have. I am bound to a 4-year lease and regret the moment I changed my mind from German brands to this piece of junk!
@@medi288 I am very sorry to hear about yours as well. It just never ceases to surprise me. I wonder how many of us with the new google based system experience these issues. Must be most of us right? Yes might be. But i really wonder what they had to gain of launching the google based system. Sure it's their brand new infotainment. But it lacks so many features the previous one had, and the instability and UX is just not up to par. It's not ready yet, by far. If it ever will be I am not sure about, it seems like the fundamental part of it is completely broken, they might need to redo everything. Why did they not launch the old, stable system with this new car, with the possibility to switch to this new one when it was ready? I just don't understand. The majority of people who buys their new cars must be unhappy with it. They will never buy a Volvo again, and influence other people the same way. I am unsure what I am missing with their strategy tbh. I am also leasing.. tbh I am not sure if I can return it. I just took for granted that if it does not work as it should, then I should be able to do something about it? Will have to read up on the terms of my contract. Have you gotten any kind of compensation at least? I am checking that with Volvo right now.
The XC60 is a better car than the XC40 due to it being based on the bigger, more expensive SPA-platform. The XC60 has better suspension, noise isolation and seats. In general you get more for your money if you buy a cheap higher platform car rather than an expensive lower platform car. For instance, buying a cheap Passat instead of an expensive Golf, a cheap BMW 5 series instead of expensive BMW 3 series or a cheap Audi A4 instead of an expensive Audi A3.
It’s funny as the XC60 feels more cramped and awkward to get into the rear than the XC40 and it’s boxier profile I bought an XC90 as it really makes a difference and the bonnet opening is ridiculous, if you’re less than 6’ and you open the hood, you’ll need someone taller to close it for you Pity you didn’t have the XC90 as the three way review would have been awesome 👍🏻
Hi Thomas love your review’s but I have driven 40 and 60 and find 60 far better 😎, but I will say there’s a conundrum in price difference to Performance. If That makes sense 🤣
Interesting video. Nicely detailed for the time allotted (by human attention). One thing I would say is for some that trunk space makes all the difference. There has been plenty of times where certain things "just barely fit" in the XC60 for me where I no there's no way I'd get it in the XC40. My poor XC60 isn't a luxury vehicle any more. It's been relegated to hard work since day one. It's like they went out a bought a bunch of dimensional crap from stores and designed the car to get as much of it in as possible without tearing the car up. I seen a few XC40's up close and immediately knew the XC40 wouldn't work for me.
I'd like to see an XC40 Recharge with a Polestar performance pkg including yellow Brembo calipers, belts and better looking Polestar rims plus the 476hp upgrade that Polestar 2 Performance gets.
The base Mild hybrid B3, B4 and the full electric already all have the android auto and the new dashboard. The T2 and the T4-T5 twin engine (plug in) dont get and will not get it as optional. Just like you cannot get the new matrix headlights on the plug in hybrid. Ps: the xc40 in plug in will stop production end of this year. Only available in mild hybrid or ful electric . Ps: you mentioned at the beginning the XC40 also comes as diesel. Actually diesel long discontinued in this car, was onky there in the early models. PPS: you also forgot the technology design concept, the XC40 is FWD only with a dual clutch 7 speed auto operating on the front axle. While the xc60 (just like the s60, v60, v90, xc60 and xc90) the T6 and T8 recharge is a petrol engine in front coupled with a electric engine on the rear drive, giving it that “awd” end result.
@@markvanloo309 i mean right now you can no longer order a new xc40 t4 or t5 plug in recharge, which is already model year 2023. the only chance for you to get one is already planned production if you get an assigned incoming vehicle. I know from personal experience (mine arriving in one month), communication from dealer and actually info directly from Gothenburg offices. Not to mention articles here and there in press (ps: Google Volvo halts production of Xc40 plug in recharge, replaced segment with single engine EV). Back to you: what makes you say or think they will still sell the Xc40 plug-in hybrid beyond already planned production (which delivers last cars within 2022)?
@@Redsquirrel007 Yep, MY23 almost sold out. Let's see what happens in MY24 that will open up in the coming months. Some info you mentioned might be outdated.
Just hired a XC40, was so impressed apart from the steering, which was weird. Was super light and a bit disconcerting because the tuning didn’t match the weight of the pedals, so I turned it to firm mode, which made everything feel a lot more cohesive, but it then the steering weights became inconsistent, randomly weighting up and down depending on how much the wheel was turned etc… I could never fully trust it.
Neither shown are worth the price. Surprised that any are sold. A review of the two affordable base versions is needed to see is any goodness is provided at those price points.
I can tell you from experience the XC40 FEELS higher. The 40 feels more like a true SUV in terms of seating position, whereas the 60 feels more like the crossover SUV, if that makes sense. Their ground clearances are close.
@@mrstarbuck9212 I know what you mean, same for me - which was kind of a bummer with XC60 - it's a very very nice SUV and its interior easily (out)matches those 2, but it really doesn't feel like an SUV - even though it's quite long and wide, if looks and feels less tall than most of the class.
Xc40 hybrid city best choice and if want travel and high HP go xc60 hybrid top can u do new test of kia seltos new 2023 1.6 engine new with 8 automatic top best speed dct.
I owned a 2020 Volvo XC40 (curiously it was also in thunder gray 😅) for one year and I can tell you that it was the worst deal I have ever made in my entire life! Although they may not seem, some interior parts are low quality and cheap and start to creak in just a few months. Besides that I had loads of problems and malfunctions related with the DPF and the electronics (start & stop system and parking cameras). I had to visit the dealer 7 times in less than a year! I decided to trade it in for a BMW and, although I lost some money in the process, I couldn't be any happier! Now I can say that I own a real car! No possible comparison!
Both cars look great however my choice is XC60. What is really strange to me that Volvo doesn't supply new models with underhood padding anymore which looks quite cheap in vehicles pretending to be a part of the premium class...
The elctric xc 40 and c40 is more interesting as 2024 model, they both have longer range and higher charging level and the singel motor will be rear wheel drive.
Does anyone know or has any logical reason why in 2024 we still have 2010 achaic type of smoothness of the digtial User Interface? I mean smartphones are small/tiny comparing to the car yet their user interface is super smooth. We have a vehicle here ,so we are not in any way or form limited to what technology we use for UI.Can`t any car mafucaturer actualy hire someone who can make it work? Can anyone point me to the car manufacturer other than Tesla that has a smooth UI ?

I need switch off that function in winter when car get ice all over around.

Both are great cars.
interesting, thanks 😊
Fully agree Nick. Have both as well. The XC40 is very lovable and the size is more practical in the city.
But XC60 is more comfortable. Especially the airsuspension knocks the XC40 out of the park. And the seating in the back us indeed better. The first thing wife and children mentioned when they took place.
Is it true it's made in China?
I’m thinking of going up to the xc60 from the xc40 but can’t decide
There is leather available on the XC60, which is superb and the seats are fantastic, so we need to talk about“animal free….”
Firstly, Volvo’s going away from leather because they say it can’t be recycled.
Please tune in to what the animal leather industry tried to do here with our channel: ua-cam.com/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/v-deo.html
In general, depending on the animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter.
If you are interested in how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: ua-cam.com/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/v-deo.html
Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally.
And there are also new leatherette materials available which are superior in every aspect: ua-cam.com/video/u94YXJ72UTA/v-deo.html
More and more natural materials are rising: ua-cam.com/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/v-deo.html or ua-cam.com/video/yG3z7m6UqNg/v-deo.html
Using animal skin on seats is a major issue of animal rights, human rights - and after all it is just common sense what is better both for the environment and just more practical and more luxurious for the customer. We cannot change what we have bought in the past (that also counts for ourselves of course!), but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.
I respect your opinion but I have to disagree. I have a XC60 full Equip, and this week I have driven xc40 for 5 days.
My impressions are:
Cabin space larger in xc60 specially drivers position for legs.
Maybe its because of interior materials, I think there are a lot better looking xc60s than this one
Wool is way way more breathable than any artificial fabric. It keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
There is absolutely nothing unethical about sheep existing or giving sheep a hair cut for the summer.
www.google.com/search?q=whats+wrong+with+wool
If we keep a sheep as a pet like a dog and visit the sheep's barber and he takes care of it, sure no problem.

Thanks for the feedback!
Greatly appreciate the thorough, comprehensive, neutral and honest review and comparison in terms of various aspects. It helped me lots choose one. I was still debating myself between 40 and 60. Thanks again!
Great review, having both cars, I feel that the XC60 is a much nicer car, both in and out. The XC40 is lovely but it’s a different category of car.
Thanks so much 🙏
Excellent review and useful detailed comparison - as always!
As an owner, what would you say about the noise? Is it bothering you on the 110+ km/ph speed?

Great video again Thomas! One of the best, if not the best car review presenter on UA-cam! Congratulations
Already saw all volvo 3 suvs reviews on this channel. Still gonna watch.

This is really a great video. Really like it! Thorough, practical and very fair comparison.! Thank you!

What about the fuel consumption? I’m interested in the B4 AWD (2.0L petrol MHEV 190CV). Thanks
@@michelebicc6983
Fuel consumption is ok. We don't really care or we would have bought the diesel engine. ;)
Considering our road profile (about ⅓ is in towns at 50 km/h, the rest is out of town at 80 km/h, seldom highways at 120 km/h), the tires (the standard 18" wheels) and the weight of the car, I think 8.3 litre/100 km on summer wheels and 8.9 litre/100 km on winter wheels is acceptable.
It's not a very economic car but I think for being a small SUV / Cross Over this is OK. Of course you can get a better fuel consumption depending on the style of your driving and with the B4 (formerly called T4 by Volvo) engine. Mind you, we have the most powerful engine for the XC40 and of course it wants to be fed. ;)
@@osiris1802 ok. It seems fair for that kind of vehicle. Thank you for your feedback. 👍
@@chachar7458
Wow, 6 l/100km is really great! I didn't expect the hybrid to help with fuel consumption as much. 👍
I sure didn't want to put anyone off by my post with the fuel consumption of my XC40 T5 AWD.
But then... I have way too much fun using all those 250 PS and 400 Nm driving the car. 😂
I did own a Volvo S40 T5 (2.5 l, 5 cyl petrol engine) in 2007 with Bilsport engine tuning (Stage 3) and Heico exhaust once and it was a real animal and a beast (>300 PS and >450 Nm torque).
I would take both to be honest, the XC40 is a Suv for young people like me and the XC60 is just so classand is for young and middle aged people as well,i do have a special place in my heart for the XC60 so i would buy it with a D5 AWD Polestar tuned and Inscription trim with wood and beige seats :D
Keep up the good reviews Thomas,i hope to meet you in my town in Karlovac,Croatia :D
Thanks stay tuned 😎
Thanks Thomas for this detailed and informative report. Looking to get the XC40 in the near future..cheers, mate !

What a great comparison. Thank you. I prefer smaller cars so I'd take the XC40.
Personally the xc40 drives sportier and I love the exterior styling more
So interesting conclusion. And I tend to agree! The price difference for the slower XC60 is hard to justify in Canada.
Are these engines turbocharged, supercharged, amd hybrid? I have seen some Volvos with all that in one engine. I doubt it will be as reliable as old Volvos. And my own experience with modern Volvos really puts my doubts in.
Love your enthusiasm and expertise in picking out things that we would not even consider as important 🎉🎉
whoa just realised the grill design at the front of the volvo is the same design as the inside air vents. so cool!
Great to know that the rear seats are pretty much the same, thanks for the great comparison 👍
highly appreciated! Please recommend our channel!
Neither the 40 or 60 are luxury cars. Come on.
I totally agree, but for the same reasons you mention, I prefer the 60.
Just the video I've been looking for.
Thanks Thomas.
enjoy !
Thanks for the feedback!
What is your feedback on the T2 model after 1 year? I found s good deal but worried about the 125HP engine!
your presentation is perfect, you nailed all my questions.
Thanks 🙏 please recommend!
Wow Thomas, really, you like the Harman-Kardon system more than the B&W? I habe the HK in my XC40 and never heard the B&W but from what I heard so far (other channels) the B&W is much better 🤷🏽♂️
In any case, great side-by-side comparison 👍🏼 Waiting for the XC60 full electric ☺️
Since when XC40 has dual insulation glass? I have the XC40 P6 and it does not have dual insulation glass and it was not an option (MY2022)
The difference is audible when Daily Motor does the sound system reviews. The B&W, though quite a premium over the HK is vastly superior.
@@patrikstenberg34 thanks for sharing your experience!
My dad has an XC60 and the center console feels massive, you feel really boxed in. Not sure if that's improved in the more recent versions.
It can be viewed in two different ways. Some feel like your father and some feel like me where the large middle console has a lot of space for both the driver and passenger to rest their arm there.
Very nice review as always:). Thank you. I will pick xc 40. Better value for money
I’m on my 3 xc60. And love it. Looked at genesis but discovered they have so many rear differential problems I stayed away from it. I also looked at the GLC, but didn’t think the price for all the plastic was worth it.
Volvo XC40 vs Volvo XC60 - both are nice, depends on $ and features wanted ... Slainte' ! Cheers !
Love your calm nature. Great work.
highly appreciated! Please recommend :)
Thank you for your very informative and entertaining video. It helped me decide to choose an xc60 and I am very pleased with it.

The Volvo XC60 Is my favourite
Really like that XC40 shown here , good review 👌👌
Extremely helpful, detailed video. Thank you.
Thanks! Feel free to share / recommend :-)
A Great job. Terrific Comparison. Thank you.
It’s funny as the XC60 feels more cramped and awkward to get into the rear than the XC40 and it’s boxier profile
I bought an XC90 as it really makes a difference and the bonnet opening is ridiculous, if you’re less than 6’ and you open the hood, you’ll need someone taller to close it for you
Pity you didn’t have the XC90 as the three way review would have been awesome 👍🏻
Thanks for the review. Very clear and appropriate👍
Hi Thomas love your review’s but I have driven 40 and 60 and find 60 far better 😎, but I will say there’s a conundrum in price difference to
Performance. If That makes sense 🤣
very good & informative review, well done
highly appreciated! Please share / recommend :-)
Very helpful,Thank you!
👍
I'd like to see an XC40 Recharge with a Polestar performance pkg including yellow Brembo calipers, belts and better looking Polestar rims plus the 476hp upgrade that Polestar 2 Performance gets.
Really great review. You look like Matt Watson on UA-cam :)
Hallo Thomas! Awesome video man seriously. i am surprised you don't have the Volvo XC60 T6 black edition review here, warum ? Deutscher mag schwarz
Ps: the xc40 in plug in will stop production end of this year. -> nope
@@markvanloo309 yes
@@Redsquirrel007 Nope. ;-). Or do you mean 2023? ;-)
Rear seats in XC60 are much more comfortable for an adult person. Much better and longer thigh support. I'm surprised, you did not feel it.
thanks for the feedback !
Just hired a XC40, was so impressed apart from the steering, which was weird. Was super light and a bit disconcerting because the tuning didn’t match the weight of the pedals, so I turned it to firm mode, which made everything feel a lot more cohesive, but it then the steering weights became inconsistent, randomly weighting up and down depending on how much the wheel was turned etc… I could never fully trust it.
very helpful, i am considering the XC40. can you help with main difference between 2024 and 2025 versions?ì
Thank you for this review!
XC60 to my mind has always represented all the SUV anybody needs this side of a a Range Rover.
For some unknown reason, Volvo likes to do some weird cost-optimisations on lower cars. For example, XC40 lacks protected left foot rest.
I love my XC40 T5.
what is the length in the back with folded seats? I have V50, and skis 2m fit inside.
Amazing review as always ! Can you also please review, XC90 T8 Plug in hybrid (MY23) ?
Cheers! All new XC90 is due soon, we ll keep u updated
Totally amazed at how little room there is in the interiors. Much less expensive cars with more room.
This guy has a GigaChad jawline and chin
I own the 2020 XC40 R-Design, and I love it! I previously had the S60 sedan, which I loved, too, but the XC40 is even better!
Hey Thomas will you be doing a review of the MG ZS EV or the MG Marvel R
Neither shown are worth the price. Surprised that any are sold. A review of the two affordable base versions is needed to see is any goodness is provided at those price points.
Which car do you drive?
What is the fuel efficiency of each? Do they both require premium fuel?
just normal Super fuel
The XC 40 is a bit too small for my needs, so the XC 60 is the choice.
Superb review that went into a lot of key details!
Thanks please recommend 🤗
Thomas wants to break his own record in how many times he can use the word "also" in one review. :)))
I drove 40, 60 and 90. And I can say, there is only one king, and its XC90 .Unmatched.
Which car have the highest sitting position ? XC40 or XC60
I can tell you from experience the XC40 FEELS higher. The 40 feels more like a true SUV in terms of seating position, whereas the 60 feels more like the crossover SUV, if that makes sense. Their ground clearances are close.
@@johnhodgeman3980 Me i like to see the hood from my driving position, it's like in the old cars and in the GLS and Range Rover. I don't know for XC40
At least you'll have an engine with plastic parts now, unlike in the Volvo!
Another difference, ventilated seats only available in XC60, not XC40 (in US).
The internal space between the two b-pillars is actually bigger on XC 40 than the XC60.
Both cars look great however my choice is XC60. What is really strange to me that Volvo doesn't supply new models with underhood padding anymore which looks quite cheap in vehicles pretending to be a part of the premium class...
I bought both
The elctric xc 40 and c40 is more interesting as 2024 model, they both have longer range and higher charging level and the singel motor will be rear wheel drive.
I prefer the XC 60 because of the space ..
2:34 😂😂😂 THAT hood is HUGE
65k for the small one and 88k for the mid size one??? They are crazy!!!
Can you compare the XC60 vs V60CC?
All Volvos lack feeling in the steering. Is this an intended feature, or are they simply incapable of providing it?
They obviously dont pay attention to that
