Another song by The Police that might not fly these days is Don't Stand So Close To Me which is about a schoolgirl who has a crush on her teacher. Written from the teacher's point of view.
The song had a music video (directed by duo Godley & Creme) loosely based on Gjon Mili's 1944 short film Jammin' the Blues. Shot in black-and-white with a navy blue tint, the video depicts the band, accompanied by a pianist and string section, performing the song in a darkened ballroom as a man washes the floor-to-ceiling window behind them. Sting performs his part on upright bass rather than bass guitar. The video was praised for its cinematography; MTV (1999), Rolling Stone (1993), and VH1 (2001) named it one of the best music videos ever, placing it 16th, 61st, & 33rd in their respective top 100 lists. Daniel Pearl won the first MTV cinematography award for his work on the video.[20] Released in the early days of MTV, "Every Breath You Take" was one of the earliest videos to enter heavy rotation, a fact that significantly contributed to the popularity of the song. Pop star Richard Marx remembers that "the first video I watched over and over was 'Every Breath You Take'. It was like seeing a Bergman film. Directors usually spelled out every word of the lyrics in a video, but this was the first video I knew that didn't do that. It was abstract." According to A&M co-founder Jeff Ayeroff, "[The video for] 'Every Breath You Take' probably cost $75,000 to $100,000, and we sold over 5 million albums. With a good video, the return on your investment was phenomenal."[21] "Every Breath You Take", a midtempo soft rock ballad, is written in key of A major (recorded in A ♭ major), in common time, with a tempo of 110 beats per minute.
The Police are a rock band that came out of England in the 70's. They mixed reggae, punk, and even jazz into their music. What a great rabbit hole to crawl into.
In the UK the police had 18 Top 40 hit singles 10 of which reached the top 10 including five number ones. Some great tunes worth checking out include Walking on the Moon, Message in a Bottle, Don't Stand So Close to Me and Roxanne.
You're right, this song is sick! As in, sick vocals, sick instrumentals, sick melody, sick harmonies, sick beat. It's so beautiful that he could literally be singing about stabbing a bitch or eating cats and people will still play it at their weddings.😁
Sting was SO young! Love his voice‼🔥 Bass fiddle. Biz, your vibe is contagious, infectious, something! When you're feeling the beat/rhythm & start doing your "seated" dancing, you make me FEEL better! Thanks for doing that by just being you‼😘
Fun fact.. after the release of this song EVERYONE was using it as a wedding song.. not realizing it is SO stalker.. in response The Police released ‘Set Them Free’
When this song came out, SOMEHOW people thought that this was a romantic love song. I guess most people don't listen to the words. You actually nailed it with your first pause, which is impressive. The song IS about crazed obsession to the point of stalking. Not sure what prompted them to write the song or why it was arranged so beautifully, but it WORKS, doesn't it? It has the vibe of some obsessed guy thinking his thoughts out loud to himself. Maybe he wanted to show the sadness behind the madness?
He is playing the acoustic Double-bass, sometimes called a doghouse bass or upright bass. These were part if virtually every dance, swing, pop, and country bands until the electric bass guitar was invented and popularized. Of course they remain part of the symphony orchestra. The cello is much smaller, higher pitched and usually played while sitting down.
The guy playing the "BASS", (what you used for your bass track before electronics), is Sting. He later left the Police and had a MONSTER solo career... check out "Fields of Gold"!
Written by Sting. Produced by The Police + Hugh Padghem. 1983. Sting: lead vocal, bass, synthesizers. Andy Summers: guitar, piano. Stewart Copeland: drums. The Police: backing vocals. Godley + Creme: direction of the video. Andy graduated from CSU Northridge in 1972. Stewart is the only American. 🇺🇲 Sting + Andy are British. 🇬🇧 The Police were in The Bahamas. Sting + Stewart Copeland were constantly arguing + laying temper tantrums. The infighting was so bad that Andy Summers left the house to look for help. Luckily, the late George Martin, producer of The Beatles, was nearby. Andy talked to George. His advice was relayed to Andy. Then, Andy returned. Sting + Stew stopped their bickering for the meantime. Meanwhile, Spandau Ballet was working on their album True on another side of the island! 😃 SB was on the rise! 🤯 1 year later, Sting met Spandau Ballet at the Band Aid recording session, London, UK. 🇬🇧 Yet, The Police was slowly breaking up. 😖😖😖 Sting + Stew could not even agree on how to play Every Breath You Take. 😖 This was a song on the final full studio album. Information c/o Andy Summers: I was at his book signing! 😃 Do not think of EBYT as only a stalker song: think of it as a break up of The Police + wishing the band was like it was on their 1st album. Sample. Puff Daddy sampled this. He made his rap into a tribute of Biggie Smalls. Guest singer is Faith Evans, widow of Biggie. RIP Biggie, Sir George Martin. Suggested next Police video: Synchronicity 2. 🎸🥁👨🎤🎸🎹 🇬🇧🇺🇲
Next recommended The Police song: “Wrapped Around Your Finger” The drummer keeps it simple in the song you’re reviewing here but, in “Wrapped Around Your Finger”, he really demonstrates his unique style and how the cymbals can be used as a main component to add a whole new dimension to drumming.
Great reaction Biz. I agree with everything you said about this song creepy and brilliant. Another great song by the police, don’t stand so close to me.😀👍❤️✌️🌼
Definitely pursue the Police, and Sting in his solo career. The drumming is one of the things that makes this band stand out. Sting is the bass player in the band, and he does most of the vocals.
My Husband was a professional Musician, He started out on on upright bass, his family had a radio show every Sunday Morning here in Tampa, on WSUN, He became one of the most sought after Bass players in Florida! He even went National, was going World, but the band broke up!
Sting's solo career is fire! There's a lot of music sounds from all over the world incorporated. Here's a few! - Desert Rose 🔥 - Fields of Gold - We'll Be Together - If I Ever Lose My Faith In You - If You Love Someone Set Them Free - Fortress Around Your Heart - I Burn For You - Fragile
This song owned 1983 - it was #1 for NINE WEEKS! Sting is playing an Upright Bass (rather than bass guitar). The Police are a mix of reggae, rock, punk, & jazz! 🔥 They were only together for 9 years initially but the catalog they have is FIRE! 🔥 4 of their 5 albums are in the top 500 of all time. Incredible, right? Sting is the lead singer & song writer and you're right - his voice is incredible. Once he left the band he had an ENORMOUS solo career. Actually, all 3 members did. Stewart Copeland, drummer, his unique style & skill is one of the best. Drummers always name Stewart as one of their favorite. Sting & Stewart ended up pretty much hating each other. Both have a lot of ego & let's face it - you can't have 2 top dogs fighting each other to get their way. Andy Summers on guitar. Everytime they tried to get back together for a tour. BAM. Nope, couldn't get along. This is one of those bands that has lots of top hits but everyone has an opinion about almost every song. Here's my short list: - Roxanne 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 - Don't Stand So Close To Me🔥 - Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic - Wrapped Around Your Finger - Can't Stand Losing You - Message in a Bottle Great reaction, the bass in that song is a vibe.
Worth a dive into for Message In a Bottle, Roxanne , Everything She Does Is Magic See also Sting the lead singer. Yes. You got it. Many mistake this for a sweet love story but a story of a man exhibiting paranoia ! Roxanne is brilliant .
Haha you had the right reaction, this song is supposed to convey a stalker-ish kind of vibe. That was Sting's intent. He's amazed people get married to this song.
This is the song that inspired Michael Stipe from REM to write Losing My Religion (which you already reacted to). The Police were great and so was Sting (lead singer) in his solo career. For another good Police video watch Wrapped Around Your Finger. Roxanne also another great song.
It's been said many times but this song has been played at so many weddings because people misunderstood the intention and spirit of the dong when it is all about his loss and constant thoughts of his departed girlfriend and the stalking aspect.
I did not know that but I should have realised Lynn ! Ten C C were one of the most criminally underrated Bands of all time and "Cry" is a great video once the boys went their separate ways ..
I suppose "Don't Stand So Close To Me" is their best song. An interesting juxtaposition to this stalker song -- though on second thought, there may be more similarities than differences.... . The Police are a GREAT band, but they don't quite reach into the depths of your soul -- seems there is always a touch of "calculation/science" (kind of like Steely Dan) in their music that never allows the listener to go all they way through the maze of their heart.
This song was a huge hit, maybe their biggest. It was @1 in whatever miserable year that was. I remember because I was pissed. I didn't like it then. Cool aas song though. He gets exactly the effect he's going for. It's kind of sad, funny, and creepy all at once. Yeah you'll love the band. Goo earlier than this, not later for the fun stuff.
The song and video are supposed to be creepy. He's playing an obsessive, possessive super stalker. As for the cello, some of the best rock and jazz bassists have played the stand-up bass.
The BEST band that has ever been!!! Full fucking stop! And THIS? Its one of their lamest songs! I DARE you to listen to 'Synchronicity 2' and not go back and listen to everything they've ever made...

@@Isleofskye Agree... but they weren't a GREAT band musically, honestly. THE BEST songwriters? Yep! The BEST to work over a basic blues structure? YEP! The absolute best stalking song.
Blondie's One Way Or Another is also good. Or if you prefer abduction, there's Into The Night, by Benny Mardones. 😉👍
@@SG-js2qn A rabbit hole I didn't know existed LOL
Always admired Copeland's crisp drumming. As a drummer I can appreciate it
As a bassist, I can definitely get behind it! Stellar hi-hat work, nice tight pocket. Love it, could listen to Walking on the Moon every day.

Dude. Their EARLY catalog is so different than later. There are a tone of reggae sounding songs and their drummer is FIRE
The police were on top till Sting went out on his own " message in a bottle " " Please don't stand so close to me" ✌️♥️

I remember watching General Hospital after school. They played this song while Luke stalked Laura. 😆

It has been used on a rap song
