  • So I wore and used smart AR glasses for a full month to replace my monitors and the results are surprisingly mindblowing! I used them for work, games and to watch content in a virtual AR triple monitor setup. They're the new XREAL Air Smart AR glasses (amzn.to/3MIUFKY) and they project a 201” screen. Super interesting to use for an extended period, especially with the Apple Vision Pro soon to be released.

    I own these glasses and I have to say, that "incredible" doesn't really describe it properly.
    I would say, its cool, fun, very bright, and definitely usable. But only for a few hours max. It will leave significant marks on the nose and my eyes start to hurt a little afterwards.
    Using it for produktivity on a mac gives you the equivalent screen space of roughly a 1080p monitor. The jitter is not too bad but definitvly far from perfect.
    In practice, I don't use them regularily. I still perfer the great MacBook screen or my 4k 32'' monitor.
    In conlusion this is a kinda first gen product (but with surprisingly few bugs) for early adopters.

      Even though they aren't 4k, the display with what you get thanks to the PPD distance also being 49 (Quest 2 is 21) is incredible! Probably the best tech purchase I've made in a while now for my Steam Deck. Pretty soon also, they are releasing the xReal Beam which will add 3-DOF tracking to any device you can plug into it. So now you can play your Steam Deck with a static in space up to 330" virtual display instead of a "follow your head" 150" 0-DOF display without it. About to be the best tech addon product I've purchased in a while lol.

    Now we just need a wireless version, feel like it'd be annoying having it plugged in and a cable draped over your shoulder all the time. Then after that we need remote functionality as well, so you could access your laptop or desktop device via the glasses from the other side of the world and use them like they're in front of you, while your computers are safe at home, that would be awesome. • @sempertard
      @sempertard Рік тому +7

      @@whatswrongwithnick Ok, so I did buy a pair. They seem well made. I did send them back, but not because of sub-par technology. It was a fitment issue. I couldn't get the glasses close enough to my eyes, causing the bottom and bottom corners of the display to get cut off from my field of vision. My younger son had the same issue. I kept trying to push them closer to my eyes. After a while, I also experienced that sort of ear discomfomt you get from wearing headphones way too long. A better fitting pair of these glasses would fix that as well.
      I still rated them 5 stars, for the clear 1920 x1080 and for the price point.
      Other observations: If you are throwing code at 1920x1080, being in a bright room or outside might be a bit of a stretch. Same as it would be with a monitor. For me, darker would be better. The other issue was head movment. So I code 6 feet away from a 75" Samsung monitor running @ 1920 x 1080. The thing with the glasses is, even minor head movements make the virtual display move as well. It's as if my Samsung was able to shift position back and forth quickly with any slight head movement. Not a show stopper, but it was a bit distracting while trying to focus on fine text. I'm sure with more time, I would get used to it. Again, not a fault of the product.
      The main issue, as I stated, was fitment. Trying to market a "one size fits all" product has to be difficult. I would definately consider them again with a different sized pair. My goal was to be able to VPN/RDP into a development box using my Samsung S20 phone, with either a Verizon data connection, or using Starlink. For all intents and purposes, I was able to do this. I just have to wait for a better fitting pair to come out.
      So Nick, I would encourage you to try them. Let me know how it goes. I'm very curious to see what you think.

    Very interesting - sci-fi or no, this is more impressive than I'd anticipate this sort of stuff could be based off of VR virtual desktops (where the lenses are a huge limitation for these use cases, regardless of display).
    What sort of resolution would you say those virtual displays are providing? Size is impressive at first, but resolution so far has been the Achilles heel where I worry I'd need a lot more than 1080p to be able to use these for serious work, as a 4k vr headset translated to maybe a 720p effective virtual monitor

    • @AndrewEthanZeng
      @AndrewEthanZeng  Рік тому +7

      I found the screen stability to be its achilles heel. The integrated Sony OLED displays do wonders for display sharpness - they're more than fine for day to day work and content. You won't want to do any serious creative work on these though.

      its 40 PPD, Quest have around 20PPD. It should be same as moving from 480p to 1080p, or 1080p to 4k.
      In headset to have same PPD you need Quest 2 to be 8k

    • @MattDiffey
      @MattDiffey 28 днів тому

      @@iraklimgeladze5223 Appreciate it's been ages, but my point was that it doesn't matter what the PPI is if the lenses aren't clear enough off center to actually use it like a real monitor.

    If you connect it to a regular device without special software support, don't you have any issues that the image stays 'static' without and gyro happing? Lots of people complain that they have to keep their head perfectly still for a comfortable experience. The moment you move just a bit it can be distracting or you start to hurl :).
