google cardboard honestly felt more like an art project than an actual product. Would've been better off if they never sold it and just used it as a random toy to hand out at conventions or something
Unless, it's Google Search, Android, Pixel Phone, or their Cloud Services, most things Google release seem like a side passion with no financial goals attached.
My school ordered hundreds and never used them, once. Needless to say, I own a few boxes of these bad boys, and they're just as useless as they've ever been. A cool concept, but such poor execution.
I will warn anyone who was interested by the art in the game at 9:00 this is a free Unreal Engine level art that’s SUPER popular and is all over the place in cheap and not so cheap games, you can even remake this VR game so that the font is in from software red and steps are properly done ✅
I was excited about google cardboard bc I thought I’d be able to cheap out on getting a VR headset and play steam games using my phone as a VR headset. (I was sadly mistaken)
A VR game (like a good one) about helping you get over public speaking sounds kinda like a good idea. I'd probably just start insulting the crowd though for fun.
The problem was, what did it accomplish? What was there to see and do with cardboard aside from some crappy mobile game tier games? As much as I dislike meta and Facebook at least that’s attempting to do something a bit more constructive.
VR enthusiasts sometimes like to say that Google Cardboard is one of the biggest reasons why people write VR off as a doomed gimmick. I don't know about that, though. I don't think *anybody* could look at this bullshit and say "gee, I guess VR must all be like this"
You must have the "vision" I used Google cardboard and it was shit, but I was like: "yes, this is the future and I know where this can go" I was right lol
@@LARVideos I think people just say that because they aren't interested and they don't think they can be convinced. If you have about 300 bucks, there's always the Meta Quest 2 or the Pico Neo 3. They handled standalone VR much better than the Google Cardboard ever did.
If you're a PC gamer with some hot shit under the hood, then by all means go for it--it's a really unique experience and you might find something you fall in love with. The Oculus Quest 2 doubles as a PC headset, making it the best bang-for-buck by far. If you'll just be using the Quest 2 in standalone mode, well, it costs 300 dollars, so if that's a reasonable amount for you then it still might be worth a try!
I remember using it and it hurt my eyes because the phone screen was to low quality and it was too bright. You couldn't really do much in google cardboard when I tried it because everything was shut down.
The fact he complained about the usefulness whilst showing it in that state was infuriating. Gives the impression that he's too stupid to realise you need to take care of your stuff which I'm sure isn't the case... SO WHY PORTRAY YOURSELF AS SUCH?!
I really hope the phone pop-in VR thing gets given another chance in the future, with cleaner execturion. With phone screens having massively increased PPI, way faster chips especially for graphics, much better general motion tracking, high refresh + OLED screens I feel like an average phone goes quite a ways towards checking all the boxes for a decent VR experience. Integrating handsets and software compatibility are big hurdles but not impassible...
There is one, ONE amazing use for phone VR, and that's VR panoramas. If you take a panorama with the Google camera app, it can be viewed as a VR image. This isn't just a flat panorama you can look around, the image is actually 3D, and you can hear the audio that was recorded when you took the image as well. It's a really cool way to capture a memory or location. I've got panoramas of places that don't even exist anymore, and this is the closest I'll ever be able to get to revisiting them.
Am I crazy if I say that I still believe in Google cardboard? I mean, I feel like noone actually tried hard enough. We could make it work. Like: *Fixing the menus to work in VR *Try to make the game more phone friendly with simple styled graphics. *Use simple gamedev technics to get as much performance as possible *We need games that will keep the user playing for longer *We need to design a standard button configuration to use all the features the best way * We need more robust configurations, for graphics and lenses (more flexible) * We chould create solutions for the 6 dofs problem (it needs to be simple and not graphical intense) Those are a few ideas. It won't be the Vive pro or index, but you will definitely have a better time
i think the problem is that no matter how user-friendly you try and make the UI, most phones will never have the same depth-sensing capabilities as a dedicated VR headset, so any game that requires moving your head is out of the question
@@sl_50 i know, that's why I think we should stop thinking about google cardboard as normal VR. I had the Samsung gear vr and I loved it with my s7 edge back in the day. Games were a bit better than cardboard but I enjoyed watching shows from Netflix , and youtube.

Imagine you download a Google cardboard game for your phone, you put the phone in the headset, you wear the headset, an ad plays, so you remove the headset, take the phone out, click on a tiny x to close the ad, put the phone in the headset, and put the headset back on

Google cardboard seems like a good idea, but it seem to mostly be a tech demo. Tbh, phone vr does seem like the best direction to take with vr games... it's just filled with lots of problems.
