  • Very soon after installing longer shackles, I realized my driveline angles were a mess. A quick video of how I was able to correct the angle of my rear axle by removing some shims that came installed on my lifted leaf springs.

    You need to get your self a SYE using a front drive shaft on the rear drive. You need to get a -3 degree between the rear differential and the drive line center. Your vibration is because your drive shaft is centered throughout. Because of rear springs do move shoot for -3 degrees so the drive line can move from -3, to -2 to -1 where if it is perfect it will move 0 to + 1 to + 2 to + 3 and more there is a explanation on line at “Tom woods drive lines”

    Thanks for the vid, I'm installing some Pro Comp 53111 leafs on my xj.......something to watch for.

      I think those are the same leaves I used for mine. I'm pretty happy with them!

      spacerag , Yeah, I kinda figured that when it involved a spacer. It's been a challenge doing this swap as a newb to the xj, hopefully no setbacks.
      I'll add that the Mr. Hand aspect to the video, ala SNL's Mr. Bill when they were funny, was a treat!

      Looks like I'm needing some longer rear shocks......yeah, newb. In the meantime it's PB Blaster to the upper shock mounts for prep.

      I used Rancho rs5000 shocks on my xj. They're good but pretty stiff. The Rubicon Express shocks I just put on my TJ seem softer but it's a heavier vehicle. Tough to compare.

    Vibration is the rear is the u joint binding. Anything over 2 inches should have an sye. Do you NEED one drive it? No. But it's the right way to do it. Yes. If you plan to daily drive a lifted jeep XJ, and do anything other than mall crawl, get one. If you're good with tools, and on a budget. Look up "hack and tap" kits. The standard slip yoke works for the stock set up. If it was truly reliable to shim and TC drop. Sye kits wouldn't be sold. Good video 👍d

    I bought my XJ with a lift installed but I barely had any vibrations. My exhaust was rubbing my crossmember so I installed a new transmission mount .
    I gain a couple mm of clearance and now I get violent vibrations and if I let off the throttle it’ll make a loud sound like it’s binding. Was that one of the symptoms for you because my rear pinion looks just like yours. It’s almost straight with the driveshaft.
    Don’t understand how a new transmission mount can cause so much issues. I can live with the exhaust vibrating when I’m idling but the driveline vibration now really feels like something will break or fall apart. That’s how bad it is now.

    You had them in backwards. Thick part of the wedge to the front would push the front of the diff down.

    • @spacerag
      @spacerag  6 років тому

      No. That's how they came installed in the springs and it would be a fine angle if I had a SYE. Installing them the way you suggest would not put the diff at the correct angle for me either. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

  • @1598hi
    @1598hi 5 років тому +1

    Probably should have just done ahead and done the sye. You're going to need those shims once you install that and ditch the t case drop Haha. I have a 3.5 lift on my xj and with an sye anx no shims on the leaf springs I get no vibes except for about 1 second after letting off the gas while traveling downhill. Not the end of the world but it can cause play in the diff later on if I keep it like this for too long.

    • @spacerag
      @spacerag  5 років тому

      All that messing around actually has her sitting pretty good and no vibes. I think i'll still get an sye down the road, but i'll be swapping out my 242 for a 231 when that happens. Thanks for the comment!

      I noticed that too, if he reversed the shim he could have probably gotten rid of the case drop.

    • @spacerag
      @spacerag  5 років тому

      Nah. It wouldnt have worked for me. The axle would have been a real weird angle. Different shims may have worked though.

    Hmmm i got a lil vibes 6.5" with a 1" tcase drop

    • @spacerag
      @spacerag  6 років тому +1

      Interesting. I added my 1" drop to eliminated the vibrations I got after first lifting it, but still running the OEM shackles. I dunno why, but I just didn't expect the longer shackles to change that diff pinion angle as much as it did. Brain fart I guess. In the end, it all worked out and I got to learn some stuff and turn some wrenches. Win!

  • @Tigerratcat

    So what's the verdict? Did it work? Why didn't you flip the wedge so it tilts the diff down?

    • @gregj.gotham4402

      Look online for Tom Woods drivelines for the reason why having leaf springs allows a rotation of the differential so the best degree to shoot for is a -3 degrees. Tom Woods has videos on why…

  • @franklinwright7248

    Man do you think if I were to flip my shims around and not take them out you think that would help my issue of vibrating lol

    • @spacerag
      @spacerag  2 роки тому +1

      It's possible! You may also just need different shims. Best to get a cheap digital angle finder to make sure you get things as close as possible.

      @@spacerag alrighty man!! I had my lift installed by some “pros” lol. But I legitimately had to go baby sit to make sure it even got done! I tried telling them to flip the shims to opposite direction to push my axel down but they didn’t and now I got the vibes pretty bad haha! Can't trust nobody these days! Lifts never end up exactly as advertised so it's a little bit of trial and error. Too bad the shop didn't notice the vibration or didn't care.

    Do you think i would have vibration issues if I only lift mine 2" and don't drop the transfer case? I'm thinking of getting shims for $20 just in case

    • @spacerag
      @spacerag  5 років тому +1

      2 inches isn't very much so I doubt you'd notice any driveline issues. If you did, they would be pretty slight. Depending on how you're doing your lift, you might get more height than you expect, so you may wanna wait and see what happens. :) My rear leaves were only supposed to sit 1.5 inches over stock and I got a heck of a lot more than that. Haha.
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

      spacerag Interesting, i'm getting dorman leafs that should sit at stock ride height and then installing rubicon express add a leafs and coil spacers that should make it sit at a level 2" lift height. We'll see how it goes!

    • @spacerag

      The right springs? They seem to be just right and working fine. An SYE is exactly what I'm hoping to do some day. If and when I do an SYE, I can put those shims back on to point my diff up to to TC and amazingly they'll still be the "right" springs! ;) Thanks for watching, man.
