    I find it hard to leave the Longines collection every time I buy a watch. They truly have amazing watches in every style. The 41mm Hydroconquest and 1832 Moonphase are both spectacular watches I love wearing. Why have a Rolex when you can have three or four incredible Longines instead?

      The power of advertising induced brand snobbery resulting in people paying (a lot) extra for a feeling of self-worth.

    Having just recently bought the Hamilton Panda featured in this video, I am always happy to see it recognized as an amazing watch it is. And I agree with Longines, although I think I'd pick a different model of theirs, the Legend Diver, and then slap a Laco B-uhr to the list, which would cover 3 historically important brands AND cover air, land and sea motifs with an aviation, driver chrono and diver watches.

    I own both the Hamilton Intra-Matic on the mesh bracelet, as well as the Baume and Mercier Riviera. Cannot believe how far under the radar that watch has flown since it's release last year. Great video showcasing some of the best watches for the money!

      I agree, I embarrassingly had never heard of Baume & Mercier until this video. With a Khaki Auto as my only Swiss made, I think the Riviera is my next piece I want to save up and set my sights for

    • @rickyromano6659
      @rickyromano6659 2 роки тому

      @@ryancarnes3164 I think the Riviera would make a great addition to your field khaki. All the dials are great depending on what you are going for. The green is awesome, but for now only comes on the green strap, and the bracelets aren't yet sold separately. I went with the black dial on bracelet, because it looks good on all the straps making it fun and easy to change up, and add a pop of color to when I want. The white dial looks amazing too, but much fancier. And even though it has an exhibition case back it is only 10.6 mm thick. That's pretty awesome, especially for the money. Check out the Chopard Alpine Eagle in comparison.

      @@gyang333 I definitely think they could and should do more. The only marketing I see are targeted sponsored ads in IG and FB. It is too bad. They have been around forever and have some truly unique and timeless designs. As well as some of pretty good in house movements and complications in their higher end models. My local Ben Bridge AD is no longer going to carry them in a few months. Sad.

    I started my watch collecting journey in 2000 by purchasing a vintage longines sub second oversized from the 1950's 12.68z and still have it. Damn I miss the old days, back then the BS 'aficionados' conjuring the terms "holy trinity " and "grail watch" hadn't darkened their shadows over this great pastime. I hope Horology sees better days for the consumer and enthusiast. Love the content.

    Funnily enough, I did a similar exercise when I saw a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Tiffany Blue going for £27,000. I ended up with a Piaget Polo S on steel bracelet, a JLC ultra thin moon phase in rose gold, and a steel and gold Omega Aqua Terra on rubber strap for about £26,500. Not quite the same bargain three watch collection, but in comparison to the asking price of an entry level Rolex....

      Great freaking choices mate. I would have done this as well! haha I mean you get a Piaget, and JLC, AND an Omega on top for the same price??? Holy crap, that's amazing. It is a little unfortunate for the actual watch collectors that so many trend followers are jumping into the watch world with both feet and without a thought. If you describe this deal Neil took to a real watch collector, they would likely do the same!

      @@chrishammer5925 lol, like I said it was an exercise, not an actual watch collection (I'm not that wealthy!) I mean, who's actually paying £27,000 for what should be a sub £5000 watch? The market is insane right now

    I live right outside of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and that was one of the reasons why I chose my 42mm Hamilton Khaki Field Auto as my first watch piece. I upgraded from smart watches that I got sick of charging every 8 hours, and it's nice not having my wrist vibrate every 5 minutes and disconnecting a bit from tech. Considering the Rolex Datejust 41 is at least £7,000 (retail) in the UK, there are so many ways to skin the cat, so to speak.
    Going for a bit more outside the box (i.e. not the usual suspects), suggest this 3-watch mix of Oris Big Crown ProPilot Date (aviation/everyday watch for £1,350 retail); Frederique Constant Flyback Chronograph Manufacture (manufacture mechanical flyback chronograph for £3,285 retail - that's a steal!); and Mido Ocean Star Tribute (heritage re-edition dive/casual watch for £870 retail).
    You could also go single brand like with Longines - Master Collection Annual Calendar (daily/office watch for £2,000 retail); Heritage Avigation Big Eye (aviation chronograph for £2,480 retail); and the Legend Diver (casual/diver watch for £1,960 retail).

Ask any watchmaker, they will say it is the best mouvement to work on. Yes you overpay the quality because of the name, but it is very much there. It is also hard to deny that the submariner was the absolute Best dive watch of the time. Blancpain made the first, Rolex made the best, omega tried, they overengineered under the pressure, Panerai... well they made a huge case.... @@BabyJesus66 i dont like Rolex but I cannot accepte you compare them with Supreme. Supreme did not invented or popularized the hoody. Rolex is not high horology but they greatly contributed to the water tight automatic wrist watch... Patek or Breguet cannot say much. Yes recent commers like ALS or FP Journe make much better horology, but Rolex shaped the watch as we know it. There is a legacy behind the label, it is just that the price tag covers them both.

      @@BabyJesus66 Rolex watches are ludicrously overpriced BUT they're legitimately high-quality, built to extremely tight tolerances, far more vertically-integrated than just about any other manufacturer out there, and they have the best bracelets in the industry. I have no desire to own one because their designs don't do much for me (through no real fault of their own, their designs have become so ubiquitous that just just look like generic clipart of "a watch" to me, and I have no desire to pay their prices for that), but at least some of the money they make does get funneled back into the watches themselves.
      Moreover, I think it's worth remembering that ALL of these are tremendously overpriced from a purely pragmatic perspective. In terms of performance they're all beaten by Casio and in practice the difference between a $300 Glycine and a $2000 Longines comes down to branding, because they both get their movements and cases from the same providers. I love watches, but I fully admit and accept that they operate on high fashion logic, and have since the 70s. Paying for the label goes with the territory, for better or worse.

    • @vegass04
      @vegass04 2 роки тому +3

      Ball is connected to the story you're referring to. The video never implies that Longines was the one who resolved the accuracy problem. It was Ball all along.

    • @BeckVMH
      @BeckVMH 2 роки тому +3

      There were no standards prior to the accident occurring April 19, 1891, in Kipton, Ohio, and resulted in Webb C. Ball, originally a jeweler in Ohio, being appointed “Chief Time Inspector” and who created extremely strict criteria for all railroad watches. It wasn’t necessarily a single brand, but any watch from any brand had to meet and adhere to Ball’s established criteria. I believe only US manufacturers were allowed in the US originally. Very interesting topic that can take days to explore, but worth the effort if you’re interested.

But a 3 watch collection for less than a Tudor might be good for some budgets and would be an interesting excercise. Great video as always! It's a pity Hamilton didn't stay in the US, but at least it wasn't moved to China like that other iconic American brand, Motorola.

    Baume et Mercier is apparently French for "a sh*t-ton of filth on the dial". My God... it looks like there is a piece of thread at the 10 o'clock just off the hour-hand 6:35. And lots of flecks of what.... sand? Did someone open this watch while at the beach? The dual-edged sword of great videography.... shows all the lumps , bumps and detritus.
