  • This is our private trip to the DELTIC PRESERVATION SOCIETY in Barrow Hill.
The wonderful CLASS 55 'Deltic' is one of my favourite diesel locomotives and my friends and I had managed to persuade one of the societies volunteers to give us a private tour. Why is the Deltic so facinating to us? Put simply it's the engines (Napier Deltic's). Napier’s liquid-cooled, two-stroke engine used opposed-pistons, a design feature that eliminated many parts, required no cylinder head, improved thermal efficiency, and resulted in more power for a given size and weight. In an opposed-piston engine, each cylinder has two pistons that move toward each other to form a single combustion space near the center of the cylinder. Ports in the cylinder wall that are covered and uncovered by the pistons bring in air and allow exhaust gases to escape. The most unusual aspect of Napier’s design was that the engine was formed as an inverted triangle, with a crankshaft at each corner. Because of its triangular structure, the name Deltic was selected in reference to the Greek letter Delta, and the 18-cylinder engine was known as the Deltic D18 (or just 18). The triangular design resulted in a compact engine with a very rigid structure. It was used in Marine Torpedo boats and from 1961 in the Deltic Class 55 Deltics. At the time, these twin-engine behemoth's at 3300HP (1650hp each) made the Deltic's the most powerful in the world and signaled the end of the steam era.

I've had some great visits to Barrow Hill Roundhouse with my grandson, infact he's got a couple of videos on his channel taken there. One's a garden railway exhibition, and the other is a general look around. We enjoyed the video... Cheers James 🙂👍

Nimbus went to the great Deltic Graveyard in the Sky many years ago! in fact she was the shortest lived of the whole class. Poor Nimbus!

Yes a very interesting and informative Video. The Deltic motor reminds me a bit of the Fairbanks Morse diesels we had on the Canadian Pacific years ago. The facility shown with the locomotives reminds me of the Ogden Shops in Calgary, Alberta, back in the day, great video.

Stoke bank is South of Grantham. Down hill from Grantham to Essendine then on to Peterborough. This is where Mallard set the record for steam at 126mph in 1938. The Class 55 in question was 55008 The Green Howards in 1981. 125 mph.

@@FatBoysonTourHikingVideos No problem. I have always loved the Class 55s. Still have an air of mystique. A visit to the cab in BR days was always amazing. Origionaly they didn't have the partition behind the cab seats. During testing in the early days the noise to the crews was deemed too much so EE did alot of extra soundproofing. One mod was the partition with folding curtain behind the crew. This effectively halved the cab space available which always gave the impression of 'danger' when entering along with sound of the Napiers. Amazing locos. I had a cab ride on 'Tulyar' many years ago. Only at 30mph at MRC but still a great thrill. Always my favorite as she was the first Class 55 ever saw in BR days.

@richardmarshall4322 I am yet to hear one in real life, I intend to remedy that next year and hopefully get close and personal. Living down South is a disadvantage as most activities seem to be 'Up North' but I'll get there.

hi , great video, are there specialist engineers who work on the power units as they are abnormal ?

They are wonderful engines. The answer is YES the volunteers who work on the Deltics all have specific skills from paint sprayers to Engineers. It is also a labour of love for them. The figures involved to get the parts they need to keep these machines going is unbelievable. As you can see in a few of the pictures the DPS is constantly fund raising.
