- We take a ride up front in the cab of Deltic 55019all the way at the E.L.R 11/10/14 (not 10/11th as in opening titles) In this part we start at Bolton street and on to Rawtenstall the booked traction for the day was D9009 so it was a double bonus.
A big thanks to D.P.S engineer Stuart Page and the E.L.Rs Phil Cribbin.

I used to be a second man drove all Deltics from Kx to Leeds Lol
Loved them noisy smelly and drafty buggers .
Wheel slip leaving Wakefield Station was a regular occurance .plenty of sand used to do the trick
I'm NOT a train spotter, but there is something special about Deltics! They are the loco version of a F4J Phantom plane. Big heavy, dirty smoky and smelly......And absolutely GORGEOUS! Remember being stood FAR too close to the rails on what I thought was a disused line one day, stark bollock naked (I'm a nudist and there wasn't anyone else about in the area......Suddenly I heard the track hissing, and realised that a train was approaching, so I stood well clear and turned round to have a look. It was a Deltic, pulling a load of ballast waggons. Only going 20 or so miles an hour. As it got close, I could feel the ground shake, and the smell was incredible
Engineering of its time at its absolute best. The Deltic is just a fantasic big machine whose raw power grips the seat of your pants and rattles your bones. Brilliant locos imho. The fact some still exist in full working order after decades of use and abuse is testament to that surely. Designed and built to last and last with proper maintenance. Almost every part could be repaired or overhauled and rebuilt to save having to buy a complete new part. A far cry from todays throw away and get new mostly without even a casual look to see if the fault is obvious.
Thank god that the Deltic Preservation Society exists, otherwise these superb locos would no longer exsist, well done brilliant video of a iconic British built and designed locomotive.
The high front was designed to prevent 'sleeper flicker' which was thought to be sleep inducing at the time.
I realy enjoy in cab videos of different loco's. Thanks.
I used to work these locos from Leeds to London. They were certainly powerful and smooth riding but the cabs were very spartan. The class 47,or Hawkers, as we called them had a much better cab and vision.
Thanks for sharing
thankyou for posting this footage and a massive up for the deltic preservation society, keep up the great work respect Michael
An engineering masterpiece .
The Napier Deltic engine is a masterpiece. As an electrician, when I saw the triangular configuration like a delta winding in a transformer, the penny dropped as to the name. Utter masterpiece of an engine. They used them in the fast attack boats in WW2 all be it with 9 pistons as opposed to the 18 these had ? correct me if I’m wrong.
No your spot on there mate 18 cyl 88 litres 9 tons with the generator 1650 hp and lots of torque I have heard they could spin the wheels at 80 mph monstrous engines.
The noise and platform vibration from standing beside a Deltic on full bore take off was something you don't forget. Used to see these close up, or charging through Doncaster station every week back in the 70's.
Excellent video ! It is surprisingly quiet inside the cab. Still that Deltic sound is amazing.
A beautiful engine thanks for the cab ride!!😎🚃🚃🇬🇧
Great video
So happy to see this fantastic loco preserved
Awesome stuff, I wanted to be a train driver when I was a lad. - I can remember seeing these in the 80's on the Kyle line when we used to visit the West Highlands on our family holidays.
Thanks for share, really enjoyed the video 👍👍👍
My favourite ,been in one if the engine running 70s at my home town Doncaster 😎💪🙋
Driving a Deltic in Denims and a Fleece !! Life doesn't get much better than that . 👍😎😁
Nice one.Thank you.
One thing about the Deltic's engines.. They SCREAM very loud.
Great video awesome views
Тепловоз замечательный,звук дизеля очень быстрый,видимо из-за того,что много поршней работают.
Yes 36 pistons per engine 2 engines.🙂
How do you blow the locomotive's horns?
HI THERE.I HAVE WATCHED THE SERIES "TRAINS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD" BUT I WONDER WHY OUR BELOVED DELTIC WASN'T INCLUDED.DO YOU KNOW WHY?
the only two eras of rail I like is br green and black unified and steam and herritage
Fab video - but the flickering Loco TV UK was an unwelcome distraction.
Thanks for your comments your not the 1st person to say the logo is a distraction sorry about that.
awesome,
The bottom of the windscreen seems to be just above, or just at the driver's eye level. Can he see much outside?
The drivers seat is adjustable and winds up but the view is limited.
Interesting video, thanks! A couple of observations.
The sound of the engine is surprisingly high-pitched. Well, at least in the cab. Perhaps this has something to do with the low speed the train is going.
The cab's layout seems very simplistic. Very few gauges and knobs. Perhaps there are more behind driver's back?
And finally the lights. In Deltics, as in every (?) British diesel loco there are only two lights at parallel height. Unlike European locos, British locos don't have that powerfull "searchlight type" headlight above the parallel lights. Whats the reason for this?
There is a high intensity light above the buffer beam in the center.
I remember hearing a driver complain bitterly to his mate years ago at Doncaster. The reason for his dismay was because the train that they were about to take over when it came into sight was hauled by a "bloody noisy Deltic". I remember wondering what he had expected considering that ninety percent of the EC trains must have been Deltic hauled in those days.
I THINK YOU HEAR MORE OF THE GENERATOR NOISE THAN THE ENGINES AS ONE OF THE GENERATORS IS BEHIND THE CAB FOLLOWED BY THE ENGINE.
I remember as a fitter on tbese locos we'd have to reach diwn behind the main gen to take the engine speed at max rpm. That had young ears ringing even with ear defenders on. Then there wax the thought of what i something let go while you were in there
Interesting.
Is the sign in the cab for if someone steals it and the DPS need to prove it belongs to them or just for if they lose it so people know who to return it to?
ricjuk It must be a massive issue for them casually losing a 100 ton locomotive 😂
Are you just a total plonker or are having a day off
What's the little dartboard thing for?
I think you're referring to the AWS sunflower. Google it for all you need to know.
who owns the tracks these engines run on? do you have to have special permission to use the tracks?
Its a private railway that allows Locomotive owners to run there engines there.
Great, thank you for that answer. Do you have to pay for the privilege? And are privately owned locos allowed onto Network rail lines?
Some locos are alowed on the network but they must be passed for it with all the modern safty equipment.
Thank you for taking the time and the trouble to answer.
I know a few off the guys from the group that own the loco and i know a lot off the drivers and second men at the railway but on that particular occasion i had bought a ticket to ride the train so yes and no is the answers to your first question.
What's in the nose?
Traction motore blowers.
It's a shame she's on a 25mph line, a loco like these icons really like to perform at speed
DELTIC is the "guvnor"!!!
They sound like a belly full of 6V GMs
I WAS STOPPED FROM SHOWING MY CREATION OF 80s DELTIC FILMS BECAUSE I MISTAKENLY SOLD MY COPYRIGHT, NOT THE WRITE TO COPY MY FILMS AND SOUND TRACK. SO NOW YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR IT!
Hi i have seen some of your footage and its great have you still got any deltic footage?
nablicman Hi. I HAVE but as said I cannot show It TO public because I SOLD by MISTAKE the Copyright. SORRY OR I WOULD FOR FREE!
Love these locos and I would normally enjoy watching this kind of thing, but that stupid wobbling 'LOCO TV UK' just put me off. Couldn't;t watch any more.
Interesting.
