When I was a kid my birthday was around Easter so I got eggs instead of presents, luckily I loved chocolate, anyway I got most of my teeth replaced when I was 30 😅

Gotta respect those guys on line working hard and long hours to make it easy for all the shoppers.
They are just licking the bosses ass. Figuratively I mean. Someone who doesn't doesn't last long in a job.
It is a stressful job but the individuals make the experience. There are some diamonds out there and you cant wash everything with the same brush. People do work hard but you have people who love what they do and love interacting with their customers.

Most of my generation don’t give a flying eff and the generation after mine is worst.... it’s coz of it that employee turnover rates are so high and most supermarket chains are now outsourcing the non-management roles to local recruitment agencies

Why would you mail the food back? Here in the US you just take it back to the store for a refund. It would be such a hassle to to mail it back and the post probably wouldn't take most of the perishable stuff.

I don't think most people realize there are offices full of people strategizing how to sell you almost everything! Customers only see what they want you too, its a little like OZ behind the curtain. So much strategy involved to get you to buy more.
I have shopped at all the supermarkets and quite honestly Sainsbury`s while it isn`t the cheapest it is the least stressful (in my area at least) The store is usually clean and staff are helpful. Aldi and Lidl are like jumble sales and Asda have gone downhill since parting ways with Walmart. As a disabled person it is important that I do my shopping in as little stress as possible. Tesco is now more expensive than Sainsbury`s and I personally find it of a poorer quality. Huge shout out to the staff at Sainsbury`s Warren Health Ipswich you guys are amazing
Sainsburys is actually very expensive compared to Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons.

The problem with Sainsbury's is the it's expensive yet the quality is very average. At least with somewhere like M&S you're getting decent quality.

The big supermarket chains don't get it about packaging. They focus on plastics and the instore bags but that is only a minor part of the problem. Producers are packaging their products with so much plastic and cardboard, most of it is overpackaged. Even snack packs have so much wasted air in them which causes extra delivery costs and wasted packaging. Even the inks they use to print on all these products are a problem.

I've seen other documentaries that show the evidence about plastic making fruit and veg last much longer and reducing wasted food. Keeping the air out prevents rot.

First off, as even Greenpeace will tell if you press them hard enough, there are processes to recycle ALL plastics and those processes are becoming more and more feasible every day. I personally feel that plastics are better for food in terms of freshness and safety... I would not want all the food that needs to be kept fresh out in the open for even to put their germy hands on. No thanks. And paper packaging, despite being easier to recycle at the moment, is not better than plastics - nor is it better environmentally (requires dirty factories and causes more pollution up the stack)...
What do you mean by stating 'first off'? I didn't mention anything about not using plastics. I mentioned the fact that there is so much over packaging and wastage that causes extra costs in storage, delivery and resources. There is way to much spent on fancy packaging and printing. What is it exactly that you disagree with in my comments?

I remember one of the 1st supermarkets opening in Málaga (Spain) in the early 60s. It was a true sensation. The owner claimed he could deliver over 500 different items, including bread, meat and fish. Imagine that, 500 items......

That's a great idea until parents run out of diapers on a Sunday. Shops with limited hours worked well when every family had a housewife or stay at home mother. That life doesn't exist anymore.
Catherine O'Brien plan ahead and go shopping on Saturday , make sure you have a buffer stock of diapers to fall back on .you shouldn’t expect others to be at your beck and call when you need or demand it to meet with your lifestyle.

About a month ago I was visiting England and I had a chance to go in a very large saintsberry and I was really impressed with the selection especially the clothes they were definitely something you could find in America to Macy’s or a target good good place

Anything plastic, reusable or not. When it gets thrown away. It doesn’t biodegrade. Paper bags are the way to go. Why oh why did we ever do away with them. I’ll never know.

Here in Ontario, Canada, most major grocery stores have cooked, rotisserie chickens available.
*~IDEA: What if they offered rotisserie leg of lamb, per-ordered AND have some extra on hand - for impulse buy*
1. It's a convenience for those who want a roast but want a time saver
2. If it's a hot day, you could have a roast as well as cooked at home bbq.
Stores could have sales of both lamb & bbq products
They usually do sell both anyway. But they sell more of what the customers are after.
I wish the supermarkets here precooked a lot more than sandwich cuts like chicken or ham or beef or pork or turkey slices. I'm sure their sales would peak wonderfully if the roast was there, just waiting for the roasties, gravy and veg to go with it.
Our supermarkets Coles and Woolworths do sell some small

With the cooked chickens.

Many supermarket chains in the USA have gone out of business because they were unable to compete with Walmart , the warehouse clubs and more recently Trader Joe's ( owned by Aldi) , Aldi and even Whole Foods. A&P supermarkets started as coffee and tea importers in lower Manhattan, NYC in 1859. By 1929 they had 16,000 self serve grocery stores. After WW2 they closed many of the old fashioned stores and replaced them with SUPER markets. By the 1960's they were in decline. The Tengelmann group bought them in 1979. They weren't effective at staving off their decline and A&P went out of business in 2015.
Aldi UK and Aldi US are owned by Aldi Süd(South.). Traders Joe is owned by Aldi Nord (North). While both shares family roots, Theo and Karl Albrecht split the Company in 1960.
Like the idea or the reusable bags for fruit and veg. Hopefully it goes well and goes nationwide, and hopefully Australian supermarkets get on board with this idea.

If Sainsbury want to see why they leaking money at the management level, look at the room full of people, listening into a weather update, great use of resources especially.
When weather greatly affects sales, naturally a certain amount of resources will go to predicting out weather patterns.
Funnily enough, I just came across this this morning and saw Becky on it. She use to be my store manager when I worked in a Sainsbury's in Surrey. Nice to see her doing well.

I never known it to be hot at Easter time. It is always freezing cold. In fact this year I think it was snowing. Or was that last year? It is bloody annoying though that this year on Good Friday I couldn't buy any Easter Eggs as they had all sold out and they had removed from shelves what ever was left. All that was left was cheap rubbish Easter Eggs and Creme Eggs.
Human to human contact at most grocery stores today will be a thing of the past. Its already here in Los Angeles. AI and self check out is taking jobs away and making customer service worse. I guess it’s what under 35s want. No interaction, lest one gets triggered. And fast checkout to save a few seconds off their can’t be bothered oh so busy life.

Havent been to the Uk in a couple of years now, great to see theyre finally seeming to catch on to the concept of weighing your own fruit and veg, we have had it for over a decade in Sweden and I cant remember the last time I put any fruit or veg even in a recyclable bag. If I really had to we have brown paper bags that are free

There's not as many scales in the produce department as there used to be, but that's because they're combined with cash registers here now.

Lamb is one of the most expensive meats in the UK.
We could bbq a leg of lamb if it didn't set us back around $25 to buy that leg of lamb... and we're talking cheap cheerful and chewy, not so good, shrik wrapped supermarket cuts here, which have been flown halfway across the world from New Zealand when you can in fact, buy from local producers if you go to a local butcher for your meat products as well as some baked savouries like sausage rolls, different pies, cheese straws, scotch eggs Etc.

Paying for plastic bags in many European countries, like Germany where I live, is quite normal since 2010 and even earlier in The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and in such advanced countries. My idea is to make them so extremely expensive, nobody would even consider using or buying them. F.e. 5 pounds for the smallest bag. You will see how fast people bring their own bags, crates or bags.
On the other hand, you get customers that then MOAN about 'Where are the bags for the produce section for loose items?' Customers can be the most difficult people's to please within retail. So glad I do not work within that sector anymore, as they would still come to this day asking 'Where are the bags' and I would be saying 'Its been like this for three years, where the frig have you been?'
Tough for customers 😁 ! Why not have paper bags instead of plastic?
Amazing how almost everyone in corporate HQ wears their orange lanyards like a uniform. I've never seen anything like it anywhere else, not withstanding the requirement to comply with security rules.

You got those green peace lot saying how Sainsburys need to cut down on plastic but yet it looks like they are using some kind of plastic for what they stick up onto the windows at the head office. And the banner thing that they use to take place of the comoany slogan. Seems a little on the contradictive side no?
Also all the customers saying how this plastic and that plastic isn't necersary talking about the problems but you don't hear them providing a solution. If it doesn't get some kind of protection and just goes out with nothing on it then it's likely the produce will end up getting more damaged and ruined and bashed about from the long transits it takes from different UK locations/oversea locations. I guarantee you remove all the plastics like they want and then suddenly everyone is moaning about the fact they can't get good quality produce that doesn't look like crap and then you end up with an increased amount of produce waste
Those reusable fruit and veg bags are a good idea for sure but i feel like they are gonna end up with a big problem of theft on them. They pay 30p for the bag and then reuse it every time. But how does the checkout staff know that the customer has already paid for it? All the customer has to do is rip off that little cardboard tag and they won't know any different if it's already been purchased before....
Plus i really don't get the purpose of having a weather guy at the head office. He rings up MET office for them to tell him the weather so he can tell the office the weather.....but it sounds like the weather they are telling him can just as easily be found on the website/app...

If people would just think to reuse plastic bags until they wear out, even for putting vegetables in, maybe that would solve a lot of problems. I do like the recyclable mesh-like bags they are selling for 30p.

Interesting how weather affects Easter dinner. Here in the Caribbean, weather wouldn't make a difference to what we plan to eat.
Easter Egg packaging is annoying too. Think the last time I bought some Easter Eggs from a supermarket I just opened up the boxes and put the contents in a shopping bag. After paying for it obviously. Put the outer packaging in the bins provided outside the shop. It was easier to carry home that way on the bus. But really why does there have to be so much cardboard packaging on these things? Especially the £10 eggs.

Out local Sainsburys in 2023, chemist closed, deli closed, fish mongers closed, butchers closed, Lotto machine never working, no tills open at all, only self-service ones, chilled cabinets half empty all the time. However Sainsburys hit the woke target 100%, in a town with 98% white inhabitants, all the window stickers are of ethic minorities
