Some people say that there is nothing out there. The middle of Australia. The vastness, the peace and quiet, with only nature, the trees, birds, animals. The wholesomeness of self and being alone will grow the spirit and cleanse the soul. Wonderful. Thanks.
Yeah but those people that say that are the people that drive 150km to go see a sight and drive right up to 100m of a waterfall for example and walk to see it, look for 60 seconds and walk back just to drive away 😂 Missing the optional walk around the waterfall to the bottom and looking at the details. That's what I feel like the desert it like. If you just drive through and sit in your car for 800km of course it would seem like that there's nothing there!
Andrew- to increase the efficiency of your induction cooking, get in the habit of moving the pan less. rotating it is fine, but if the pan isn't touching the cooktop it isn't heating, which means things take longer to cook and you use more energy. Cheers!
Not true. Induction cooking only stops after you lift the pan at least 5 mm away from the glass and move it more than half way out of the circle. I sometimes cook with a dishcloth between the pan and stove to catch spills! If it's not beeping, it's cooking! ☺
Labour Law Act actually, it is true. Regardless of if the cook top is on or not, if the pan isn’t touching the cooktop, it literally isnt heating the pan and the food. Each time you lift the pan off the cooktop the pan loses some heat, the food loses that heat energy and you have to build it back up to that same temperature over again. It is only minute amounts but lift the pan 20 or 30 times while cooking and you would be suprised how much difference it makes.
You're all forgetting the fact that induction cooking doesn't work by heat transfer between the stove and the pan. The electro magnetic field generated by the stove heats up the actual pan itself. Even if it doesn't touch the stove. Obviously not more than 5 mm
With a comment about induction use. My wife and I have used induction cooking and heating up food for nearly 3 years. On long tours we load a freezer ( 40 litre ) with home cooked meals sealed and stored. They are used gradually over a few weeks both warmed up and added to on the hob or 12 volt travel oven. Both methods are quick or effective on a 150 watt lithium battery or at least the alternator. As the freezer contents gradually empty of home cooked food. We use a caravan park (to do some laundry usually) and hook up to the 240 volt site supply and have another day cooking up a storm to re load the freezer. (Camp kitchens on sites are fantastic for this also). This way we are mainly reheating good food and saving the Redarc system from excessive use cooking from a fresh start. The induction can cope very well cooking from a start or reheating pre cooked. Happy to endorse with a solar roof top set up and frequent driving and not in camp for days on end as a provisor.
Damn! Your troopy is looking the business. Looks tough and muscular without trying to be. And that colour just tops it off ever so nicely. A big fan of this build. 👍👍👍
You are so lucky to go out and able to overland again ! Your truck looks really awesome. I wondered if you could not simplify your electrical system which looks very complicated. In my overland truck I installed a Goalzero Yeti 3000x with 240 amps capacity. Totally stand alone with all connectivity (solar, 12V car, 220v electricity) for charging build in. All dashboard available to monitor power stats. And even a 2000w inverter is build in. I find this a revolution after building in dual battery systems with all the hassle in several previous trucks. Wondering if you considered this option. Happy travelling ! Thanks for the inspirational video's !
That is one sexy looking Troopy. The attention to detail, quality, dependability, and functionality is commendable. Congrats on another fantastic build Andrew!
"What now? I'm bored..my tents open, I'm done!" 😄😆😂 I think everybody that perfects their camp system has said this at one stage, lol, like the slogan "the journey is the destination", "the joy is in the build." 😄🇨🇮👍
Hello Andrew, if you cook on the induction cooker during the day your inverter will use the energy from the solar panels first and require less from the battery bank. Your batteries will last longer. Great and enjoyable video and congratulations to you on your new Troopy build. Happy and safe travels to you. Jason from Melbourne Victoria.
A house system does that but a battery system in the vehicle is different unless solar goes directly to the inverter. Idk if Andrews setup does this. It could do.
@@Malc664 When both the mppt and inverter are connected to the negative and positive busbars the power is moved to least resistance which will be the inverter because it is under load. Think of the flow of electricity like water therefore less draw on the batteries. Hopefully l made this understandable.
The expense vs complexity vs effort is an endless debate but for me the overriding joy is seeing Andrew back ‘out there’ again. It’s been a long time coming due to the pandemic. As a RRC owner myself, I’m looking forward to the Canning journey - a unique experiment (and content) with a classic vehicle.
As with quite a few others, I am somewhat in awe of the attention to detail and showing what's possible with the Troopy! There's only one issue which quietly nags at me, having witnessed the damage from "flying objects"... how, in the event of an accident or rollover, do you mitigate the risk of being hit by items in the area behind the seats without the benefit of a cargo barrier... not a criticism but a genuine interest as to how you build strength into the cabinet work and their attachment points to reduce said risk...
Troopy and Oz looking fantastic. "Andrew no longer reads comments on UA-cam. "Hmm. Funny how as you get bigger the once important "community" is no longer what matters.
Great video Andrew, so pleased to see you’re getting some freedom back down under. And I really love the colour of your Troopy, the black works so well against the gray. Best Troopy ever
As another troopie owner who's doubled the cost of his rig with "essential mods", more for touring than overlanding, I can really appreciate this rig. This old south African dude really puts some thought into his rigs, obsessively so, like all troopie owners. Looking fwd to some OS content in this rig.
Lancruiser is looking beautiful Andrew. Will be going with the induction hob option myself in future. So envious of you getting out on a trip. I have severe cabin fever here in the UK and also suffering from long covid which has kept me out of action for 7 months. I long for the day that I can actually go somewhere outside of this depressing country 🤣
Using all-electric (200ah with 3k inverter for 1800w induction stove, 1700w heater, 1800w oven/air fryer, and 12v 300w heating rod to heat water tank for showering) for the past 6 months, what have I learned? That 200ah mostly used during dark hours (making dinner, staying warm while sleeping during 28F lowest, making breakfast) and when the only recharge source is the alternator, as there is no solar available during dark hours. Hint. Hint. (Extra: Shower water is heated while driving to shower after dinner and also serves as radiator-like heat while sleeping). Hope that helps.
I am very impressed with your vehicle and your 'shakedown trip' strategy. Your vehicle looks absolutely stunning, but what I like about it most is that you have built it to serve you in the best way possible. I have a little idea for your fridge, but will admit to not knowing if it is really practical or will work. You mentioned not being able to see what is in the fridge, but I thought, why not affix a mirror to the inside of the lid (providing it doesn't obscure your in-built lights). A glass mirror may not be a good idea for an overlanding vehicle, but I wonder if there is an unbreakable non-glass mirror that is lightweight and may allow you to see what is inside. If not, then that drop down table is probably best gone as you said.
Yes ...I do relate to the reason why....finaly your back doing what you enloy or maybe need... in the environment. Whilst the gear may make the journey more pleasant, its the journey, the discovery the enironment that makes the reason why.
thank you for these superb videos. i am not an overlander buy i enjoy travelling with you. it is always interesting and you are a superb photographer and storyteller. cheers
Hey Andrew - Love the new Troopy. I'm a long time watcher and I've grown up in the UK. As you know this country is utterly useless for overland as its so tiny. Fun fact I’ve learned from testing induction cookers for work. If your boiling water for pasta at say 2000w once you reach boil reduce power to maybe 700w or where ever the boil starts to fade. . Don’t leave it at 2000w. You will waste a lot of current. On many inductions water will stay boiling (100C) around 700-800w.
Good hearing a South African voice on UA-cam! Many thanx from Cape Town. Watched your video on the Pajero. Another perspective I guess, I just wish I can own one.
thanks for posting. you made two good points about induction. its 'generally' no quicker for heating water and reheating meals make a lot of sense when camping. we find a frozen meal can act like a freezer brick, less prep and less 'valuable' camping time taken cooking and it uses less energy. ( Also you can carry less condiments etc)
Suggestion. When cooking at home, make an extra meal, choose a container that will maximise the room in the 12v fridge freezer and store. Then when it's time to ( hit the road ) just pick up the container and place it in your 12 v freezer. Also a tip for milk, if you get a Thermos and place your milk into it. I use 2 x 1 litre size. It will stay cold and not freeze. 2 bottles allows rotation and storage, is great for cold water as well. Add electrolytes, gr8 build buddy. Well presented as usual Davi b
Andrew I love your channel, however I would encourage you to do more testing, so you can pass on more accurate information to your subscribers. I have never found the need to run my induction cook top on a setting of more than 1000W, and for cooking eggs etc I use 600W, at these rates the induction cooker is very economical on power. Sadly I have to strongly disagree with your statement that "boiling water is by far the most demanding on an electrical system", taking into account how much water you need to boil is very important, however we use a compact 240V camping kettle (900-1100W), it draws 90A when running, and boils 550ml (just over 2 cups) of water in 3 minutes and 5 seconds, consuming a total of 4.6Ah, seriously @ only 4.6Ah that is nothing on a reasonable size LiFePo4 battery. We also love our 240V pop-up toaster, so quick and convenient and also uses bugger all power.
So good to see you out there again, Andrew! Love taking in the views with you, and looking forward to more of this :-) The Troopy looks great too. I wondered, as I am curious for it, - you have shown us the process of getting it kitted out - would you consider doing a video showcasing all you have done to it in one video? E.g. a "Modified"-style (referring to Ronny Dahl's channel) overview perhaps?
Great setup. Looking at your store i don’t see Camp Cover. I’m in the US and would like to get my hands on the spare tire (tyre) trash/storage bag. Any ideas?
Ideal setup for 2. With the Hot water could you not use the heat from your exhaust to heat 30ltrs water for shower?. Then use solar to charge batteries, then transfer to keep water hot. You need lots of energy to get to temp but very little to keep it there.
Very nice video! ... about the table ... couldn't you slide the table some how on top of the top up roof ... just slide it out before you open the roof.
I thoroughly enjoy the videos you produce and wanted to ask if you feel this latest troopy gets you back to basics of camping? I remember you said you wanted to get back to a basic set up and enjoy actually camping and the simplicity of the camp vehicle is a must. You certainly look to be having a blast. Happy Easter !!
Hi Andrew just wondering what your reasons were for setting up on the drivers side this time round . I have a Darche 270 but at the time of purchase only right hand side awnings were available. I live on the West Coast as well and considered looking for a awning for the drivers side as I’m frequently on the beach , this way with the vehicle pointed towards the water the vehicle blocks the prevailing winds SW, also providing wind protection to the back of the vehicle . Is this a reason for your choice on this build Cheers
Hi Andrew, could you let me know which Recaro seats you chose? I am wanting to replace my 76 series front seats. Also a supplier name if possible. I will need to find out if they are bolt in, or if need rail kit, and if need engineer cert. Thanks, Graham.
Boiling water is the most energy efficient thing you can do in terms of heating food in a kitchen. If you need wasteful ‘jet boil’ cans (and weight) to do this then you’re effectively rocking an induction lighting system. Get a 9kg bottle, or solve the problem?
what are the reasons for bothering with induction cooking in the first place? I can only think of one, which would be to negate the effect that wind has on cooking speed. You need to ask Paul Marsh about induction cooking in overlanding applications. Im sure he would giggle. :)
Paul Marsh is a very close friend. And he is very interested in my findings. The advantages vs disadvantages depends on the type of travelling/touring one does, and the money one is prepared to spend. All will be presented in a video soon.
There is so little left of the original Troopy, it begs the question whether it was the correct choice of vehicle in the first place. Perhaps a Unimog would have been more appropriate.
Hi Andrew, I'm enoying watching your programs. I'm just intrigued why you need all these power systems in your vehicle. I go camping for a few weeks with only the basics. If I can't make a fire for cooking, a Cobb is a great alternative. A shower bag hanging from a tree is all I need to shower with. I believe the more simple and basic the better. Just my view.
I'm sure Andrews been there and done that. It makes life easier for him and because he can, so why not. For myself past middle age I'd want the easier options. Money being no object.
Hi Andrew! Amazing location & looking forward to see part 2. I’m working on my HDJ80 build and taking much inspiration from your experience. Thx for sharing so nice videos.
I’m afraid to say you can always buy better but not pay more than using victron. They are really yesterday technology but trading on there name. as one of the first mppt and inverter manufacture who then sat on there butts since the initial release. Amptron batteries seem to have goods atm.
Perhaps if that table by the fridge was only half depth it might be more useful? Something to sit the stuff on as you pull it out of the fridge, and still able to reach into it
I know your not into a panel on top but I swear by it, I just have to face North'ish when I park. I went for the semi flexible to keep the weight down. And yes induction is the future, I'm not ready yet but can see the way.
Hi Andrew I have always wanted to request a product review or at the very least your opinion of your sunglasses. I've noticed you've had them quite some time. Cheers Love the content
Looks amazing, amazed about how well I can hear your voice during that drive very clear. How is the watertank does it make alot of noice during trips being inside the car?
Im always wondering one thing, perhaps some locals can answer this to me: You’re waving all the time because of the flies, you have a net around your heads. But the cars are open like a barn door. Aren’t there flies like hell in the car that drives you crazy at night? That would be the case over here in Europe with mosquitoes. Thanks in advance.
The colour is indeed fantastic! It really makes the Troopy look very, very good. Doesn't add any function to the vehicle of course, but if you look good you feel good, as the old adage says. And, that is important too.
Hi Andrew - what seats are installed to your vehicle? Recaros as the covers suggest.? The seatcovers look great onto them. My vehicle has the recaro experts fitted but I'm not able to find nice tailore made covers for them.
Hi Andrew - you just need a couple of elephant wondering through the shot at 22.40 and you could be in Botswana overlooking the salt pans there. Vehicle has to be one of the best looking Toyota's out there- possibly your best build?
Hi Andrew, i have a number of questions. Firstly love the builds especially the current one. Ive been watching companies build pop top 78series, and they advise that the roof removal has to be engineered, pop top installation engineered, rear track correction engineered, coverting to camper van then becomes a camper so new rules ie engineered. Suspension- GVM upgrade prior tonregistration gives you federal acknowledgement but if you do it after then its state ie risk of defect in other states. Whats your understanding of all this? Many thanks
Andrew, completely unrelated, but have you seen the UA-camr Terry Miles? I thought it was you crossed with Austin Powers playing the piano! You should check it out.
Fly net works better if you pop it down lower and around the base of your hat. Then you have the toggle around shoulders and not swinging in your face 😉
Some people say that there is nothing out there. The middle of Australia. The vastness, the peace and quiet, with only nature, the trees, birds, animals. The wholesomeness of self and being alone will grow the spirit and cleanse the soul. Wonderful. Thanks.

I live on the West Coast as well and considered looking for a awning for the drivers side as I’m frequently on the beach , this way with the vehicle pointed towards the water the vehicle blocks the prevailing winds SW, also providing wind protection to the back of the vehicle .
Is this a reason for your choice on this build
Cheers
Hi Andrew, could you let me know which Recaro seats you chose? I am wanting to replace my 76 series front seats. Also a supplier name if possible. I will need to find out if they are bolt in, or if need rail kit, and if need engineer cert. Thanks, Graham.
What a spot ! ❤️
Perhaps a Unimog would have been more appropriate.
weight!
@@Malc664 As I said Malcolm, that's just my view. I'm nearly seventy now and still do it my basic simple way. Each to his own I guess.
@@djjames6576 nor do we want to see him having a shower with that set up 😂
Hi Andrew! Amazing location & looking forward to see part 2.
I’m working on my HDJ80 build and taking much inspiration from your experience.
Thx for sharing so nice videos.
When I hear Australia and lake. I think crocs!
In this area I believe lakes are often dried salt pans
I wish I could find an overland vehicle like this in Canada. We're stuck with basically just trucks. Which are quite large.
thank you beauty video
Would you ever consider a small-ish microwave as part of your cooking setup?
I’m afraid to say you can always buy better but not pay more than using victron. They are really yesterday technology but trading on there name. as one of the first mppt and inverter manufacture who then sat on there butts since the initial release. Amptron batteries seem to have goods atm.
Perhaps if that table by the fridge was only half depth it might be more useful? Something to sit the stuff on as you pull it out of the fridge, and still able to reach into it
How much money do you have a invested in that rig ?
It does look great ! 🙏🌲🇨🇦
Man I miss your trips around Southern Africa!
Cheers!
I know your not into a panel on top but I swear by it, I just have to face North'ish when I park. I went for the semi flexible to keep the weight down.
And yes induction is the future, I'm not ready yet but can see the way.
You're my Overlander inspiration.
I'm interested in a detailed video or explanation in your electronic set-up, what each Victron unit does and it's relation with the Egon dc hub
A detailed video of this build is being prepared now. I'll make sure I include that.
@@4xoverland Thanks Andrew 👍
Hi Andrew
I have always wanted to request a product review or at the very least your opinion of your sunglasses. I've noticed you've had them quite some time.
Cheers
Love the content
Looks amazing, amazed about how well I can hear your voice during that drive very clear. How is the watertank does it make alot of noice during trips being inside the car?
wait, how did you fly your drone while you were driving?
Im always wondering one thing, perhaps some locals can answer this to me: You’re waving all the time because of the flies, you have a net around your heads. But the cars are open like a barn door. Aren’t there flies like hell in the car that drives you crazy at night? That would be the case over here in Europe with mosquitoes. Thanks in advance.
Love the colour of your troopy - great choice! Just wondering why you got your kitchen set up on the right side of the car and not the left?
The colour is indeed fantastic! It really makes the Troopy look very, very good. Doesn't add any function to the vehicle of course, but if you look good you feel good, as the old adage says. And, that is important too.
Yep pretty special camp spot
have one, great table
Andrew, what is the fuel consumption/mileage of this vehicle?
make the table slide out of uni strut ?
My home power bill dropped a lot when I stopped using electric kettle. They use heaps of power.
Watching this on my phone, I couldn't work out what the box on top of the spare wheel was. Please explain?
all in good time . . .
I'm surprised your maxtrax table is on the driver's side of the car was there a reason for the swap
You do know that Great Northern have twist tops 😉
Top.
Cheers Andrev. 🍻
Ronny Dahl just bought a Troopy, you guys should do some collaboration again.
Is there some reason you don't use a product like OFF or some other bug repellant? Just curious 🙂
I have several bug repellants types in my arsenal. Few have any affect on flies at all.
Andrew please take the measurements of the body after all buildings is completed with the shock configuration
Will you be doing a video with a detailed look at the troopy?
dream truck, thanks for vid Andrew.
Many thanks
The fact that you can't have an open flame should sell the system all by it's self ,but that's just me . Happy trails.
A large magnetic sheet behind your cooker will protect your body finish.
Nice video Andrew , the truck looks awesome , country side incredible ! Boysie like !
I’ve asked before but still curious if a schematic of your electrical will be available?
