Miss Powers Totally right. Certain streets in for example Germany the working girls sit (of used to before at least) in windows - red light means they are up for hire.... Hence “red light district”.
Such a great series, I'm absolutely it didn't get a trilogy. Right up there with Lethal Weapon for having action sequences that are intense, great humor, the partner relationship worked and they had phenomenal villains.
Yes, but make sure it's the 1980 version. They re-did that song with a different arrangement called "Don't Stand So Close '86." It's slower and gives a little more gravity to the subject of the song. It's still really good, but I like the original better.
And “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic” I think I mentioned “Sting” he’s the lead singer (previously)......Englishman in New York is a song of his I love.
He’s saying he loves Roxanne & she doesn’t have to prostitute herself anymore. A red light by a door signifies a prostitute is there & available... Glad you got your Police hat out, lol
It always makes me laugh that when the chorus hits, and he realizes that she did shut down and isn't available to him anymore, he starts desperately calling for her to turn on the red light. I guess he thought it was love when she knew it just was a transaction.
She doesn't have to wear the "sell yourself" makeup or dress and doesn't have to turn the red "open for business" light on anymore. He wants to take her away from that life and the two of them create a new life together.
I tried to to the same for someone and she didn't care and thought her way was better than having a relationship/life with me. It's hard to take them out of that life I guess.
My mom has been in the hospital for 2 weeks. She had a mini stroke. She's fine. I talked to her on the phone and she heard one of your videos in the background. She asked it I was watching you and I said yes. She said she can't wait to get home and smoke a bowl and watch one of your videos. Keep doing what you do. It's good for people's health. LOL
Yes - it's actually in the lyrics - "you don't have to put on the red light -- walk the streets for money - you don't have to sell your body to the night" -- duh, MV -- he usually has a little more comprehension... lol
The red light in the song refers to what prostitutes used to use to indicate what they were. (Red light for ladies and blue light for transsexuals) The song is about a man who falls in love with such a lady and tries to persuade her to give up her profession.
Roxanne..you don't have to turn on the Red Light!! Great Banger! Reminds me of Eddie Murphy singing this in the movie 48 hours!! Excellent 👍👍👍 Rock it out!! 🙌🙌🙌
Sting was a School teacher in a previous Life, before he turned to Music. What a voice! Loved The Police. Btw, check out 'Don't Stand So Close To Me'. He witnessed more than his fair share of young school girls crushing on him as a young, handsome teacher : )
Prefer The Doors-"Whiskey Song" which sounds like a "pedophile song in the 2nd verse BUT remember that in the 60's, 'little girl' could refer to a small woman or young woman of age. Drives me crazy that people assume the worst about music written in a different generation with different phrasing.
My uncle was hospitalized with a brain tumor, inoperable and he passed within 3 weeks of diagnosis. While in and out of morphine he had a new nurse and she introduced herself even though his eyes were closed and he hadn’t responded in a while. Roxanne. He didn’t open his eyes but he broke out with ‘RoxAaaannne’ 🥰 Miss him.
When this came out it was just great song and their debut single. All we knew was that they were from the UK. Now I listen to it and realize how much reggae influenced it is.
Copelands drumming reminds me of Cream, Ginger Baker on drums. Clapton and Jack Bruce. First supergroup!! Check out: White room, and Sunshine of your Love!!
Fun fact... Sting was 35 when he finally hit it "big"... So it doesn't matter how long you do anything, hard-work will, eventually pay off. Great reaction!!!
In 1977, The Police where an upstart band mostly rehearsing. Sting, married but away from his Wife at the time, was staying with band mate Stewart Copeland. Sting wrote the song overnight, after everyone had gone to bed, on acoustic guitar with a Bosa Nova beat (Brazilian). When he brought it to the band, a few days later, they suggested putting it to a reggae beat and a hit was born. Sting later said he was inspired by a cheap Paris Hotel, a Hotel often used by the ladies of the night, he once stayed at while touring with a previous band. It had red lights.
I saw Sting (the lead singer of The Police) here on Maui at an outdoor concert next to the ocean. It was such a magical performance as the full moon appeared in the sky & the night weather was perfect. I'll never forget it!
Folks in the comments have already said it, this red light is not a Stop-Light. It´s what´s called around these parts "The Red Lantern". Fun reaction as always. Keep them coming!
Probably a few of you already explained it: In an interview Sting said, that he got the idea after the band was playing a show in a club called The Nashville in Paris. After the show he was walking through the red-light district for the first time and he imagined what it would be like to fall in love with one of the ladies. When he arrived at the hotel there was this old poster of Cyrano de Bergerac in the hotel foyer. And the name of the character on the poster was Roxanne.
The Police are one of my favorite bands so many great songs. Their sound is so diverse and experimental with so many styles, add to that Sting's unique voice and they are unmatched. New Wave is really the best Genre! Give a listen to any of these: "Beds Too Big Without You", "Driven To Tears", "Reggatta de Blanc", "Masoko Tanga", "Spirits in The Material World", "Can't Stand Losing You"......
Oh my gosh! My dad used to sing this song at karaoke when I was a kid he's a 6'3" cowboy who used to ride bulls and do demolition derby for a living LOL💗! Let me tell you people got a huge kick out of it for sure, Oh and the lead singer is Sting too. Great song!
The lyrics is about being in love with a prostitute. He's saying that he wants to take her away from that life. At brothels, there would be a red light in front of the girl's room to indicate that she was available (hence the term "red-light district").
Beatles sang about holding hands, this song is a love song for a lady of the night. The difference between those songs is about 15 years. Interestingly enough, in their early days The Beatles played in a club in the Hamburg red light area. Sting who composed this got the idea on the walk on Paris red light area on their early European tour when they were largely unknown band. The piano chord in the beginning is an accident. While recording, sting sat down on a piano not noticing the lid over the keys was open.
Fun fact: Sting got that nickname because when he was younger he played soccer wearing a yellow and black striped shirt that his friends jokingly said made him look like a bee. Buzz buzz.
Dude is in love with a lady of the evening.....red light district is usually the same everywhere, right.....this song is so different. The Police did a lot of synchronization in their timing......and Sting is so pitch perfect. Enjoy these 3- talented musicians and vocalists.....classically trained too. 🎼🎶🎸🎸🔥🤘😎check out “Walking on the moon”. One of my fav songs by these guys.
Sting... got his name from black and yellow tops he wore..like a wasp.. also a teacher.. pretty good singer as well .. loved The Police back in late 70s when I was at school... bloody marvellous. 😎
Monsieur R-E-A-L!! Man, watching you respond to music I gave up on years ago is like having a child of own. It's just discovery and joy, and a little figuring.
He was saying you don't have to be a prostitute. He loves her and wants her to stop living that life and just be with him. Sting is one of my all time favorite artists ever. The Police are legendary and they have sooo many amazing songs. You've discovered an amazing group so don't stop with this one.
This is the first video I'm watching today. It's interesting how the meaning of the song lyrics change as you age. When I first heard this song I knew it was a BANGER but I didn't give much attention. Years later my friend and I were stopped at a red light and there was a hotel at the corner and there was a RED LIGHT IN THE WINDOW. My friend said I guess it's "time for business" and I asked "what does that mean?" She said "you know like in the song" She explained the lyrics in the Police song. I was like "WOW!" It's just like meanings of love songs change pre and post break ups. Pre break up you're in love and everything is groovy. Post break love songs are like daggers to your soul.
Really proud of you today. That Subscriber Trophy is to cool. Can't think of a better recipient. You an influencer and you keep jamming to all the genres of music. We love it. The Police were an extremely influential band that were 80s royalty. There greatest hits are a big part of many of our lives. Spirits In The Material World is a big favorite of mine.
"Red Light" means "The Red Light District" in many countries where their are areas that prostitution is legal. Hence; "You don't have to put the red light." because "red light" in general sense means stop as the reference is always the traffic light which in this case is the opposite when the man inlove with Roxanne is telling her to turn off the red light. Sting is the lead vocalist for the band Police. He also has a successful single career.
Also, their song "Synchronicity" is awesome. And the leader singer, Sting, had a truly phenomenal solo career. He was also.known for having tantric sex, btw.
The two things that comes to mind when I hear this song, Is Eddie Murphy singing it in the movie 48 hours, and this song preformed by sting at the secret policeman's ball with Monty Python
I love that you didnt know what it meant and came up with a complete thesis! You Are a Gem of Truth Brother. Here is one you' ll like. "Say Goodbye" - Dave Mattew's Band. The message is one you can riff on!
Was wondering when you were going to get to this. I used to take it personally, until I realized Sting is singing about his love for Roxanne. Yep, I'll take him! 🤣 This song came out when I was 13 years old.
😂 I am crushing so hard on you right now.... love your interpretations of songs.. wish I could see your face when you read the REAL meanings... good job, again
A bartender at our favorite watering hole is named Roxanne. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard someone who asks what her name is, sing it back to her, Roooooxanne! Aaaand, she rolls her eyes......again.
Love The Police!!! I was fortunate to go and see them in concert back in the 70's and went solo. What a feeling of freedom to not have to worry or look for anyone in a humongous crowd. Great memories about this concert! Roxanne is my definite favorite song of this band. Message In A Bottle is definitely a close tie for first place. 🎸 Rock On!!!
There is a famous drinking game that goes with this song You take a shot every time you hear "Roxanne" Your buddy takes a shot every time they hear "Red light" Good luck :-D
Nice nice... I saw them play in a tent on Tooting Common, South London, just before they hit... must have been about 1977 or so... one that gets you out of your seat is “when the world is running down” (as someone else here reminded me)... I’d love to see what you make of that
Way back in the day, guys who worked for the railroad would have to stop and spend the night in small towns and cities overnight. They would go looking for ladies to spend the night partying with, for a price. Once they found a girls place they would hang their red lanterns by the door or window to let the fellers know where the party was. Neighborhoods with lots of red lanterns out came to be known as Red Light Districts. If you are a fan of Eddie Murphy you might have heard him singing this song in his movie 48 Hours.
Albert Einstein described his theory of relativity as E=MC^2 and even if you didn’t fully understand the theory, you appreciated how AE made it accessible to you (metaphorically) through relative simplicity. Here is genius: you make infinite complexity into accessible simplicity. Ladies and gentlemen? I introduce you to Mr. Stewart Copeland. This is the PROTOTYPICAL rock drummer. Doesn’t LOOK complicated but changes the dynamic of the entire band and maybe even popular music for a decade. Virtually no one knows his name.. most ignore him or simply nod in his general direction. Do so at your own peril. This percussionist is genius. Bet on it.
Thus is one of the most precious reactions ever!!! Even if you didn't know red light district I thought you might get red light from old black people red light for parties and sell your body to the night. BUT your modern interpretation still works. It's brilliant!!- 😬😬😂💯
I had a cat named Roxanne. I used to call her just like that...ROOXXXANNE. She'd come skidding around the corner and look at me like WHAAAATT?? 😂😂Pweese, pretty PWEEESE..Synchronicity 2. There's a crazy video but trust me, you need the lyrics.
This song will forever be burned in to my mind thanks to Edddie Murphy trying to sing both parts "Roxanne" and "put on the red light" in his jail cell in "48 hours."
You said “Giggety!” 🤣😂🤣 Im dying! I used to have a woman that lived across from me that was a sex worker, and she literally turned on a red light during “business hours.” My uncle would leave my house and start singing this song super loudly. I didn’t know whether to laugh my ass off or sink in to a deep hole 😂 please react to Martina McBride Independence Day. I think I ask that every time I watch a video, but I know you’ll love her. She’s a powerhouse! Arrested Development singing Tennessee or Mr. Wendel would be amazing too
One of my good friends in junior high school was named Roxane, with only 1 'n', ha; she hated that song. This trio of obnoxious jocks used to follow her down the hall singing this song to her.
I think red light pertains to the “Red Light District”. Roxanne was “hooking”. But I could be totally wrong. 🖤
It does.
You are totally right!
That's how I always understood it
You are 100% correct
Miss Powers Totally right. Certain streets in for example Germany the working girls sit (of used to before at least) in windows - red light means they are up for hire.... Hence “red light district”.
In the movie "48 hours", Eddie Murphy's opening scene he's singing "roxanne" in his jail cell.
Such a great series, I'm absolutely it didn't get a trilogy. Right up there with Lethal Weapon for having action sequences that are intense, great humor, the partner relationship worked and they had phenomenal villains.

It's true. My entire family, 1 cousin in particular who says/sings it everyone I see them/him.
I went to school with a girl named Roxanne and she had red hair just to top it off, pretty sure she hates this song now
She doesn't have to wear the "sell yourself" makeup or dress and doesn't have to turn the red "open for business" light on anymore. He wants to take her away from that life and the two of them create a new life together.

Have you heard Sting, vocals and bass solo: Fragile! Painfully Beautiful!
There is a famous drinking game that goes with this song
You take a shot every time you hear "Roxanne"
Your buddy takes a shot every time they hear "Red light"
Good luck :-D
Nice nice... I saw them play in a tent on Tooting Common, South London, just before they hit... must have been about 1977 or so...
one that gets you out of your seat is “when the world is running down” (as someone else here reminded me)... I’d love to see what you make of that
The best thing is that you are making me love all kinds of music again.
The Police Synchronicity tour was one of the best concert tours of the 80’s! I was 16 and we were all in love with Sting!
Sting is amazing. No one like him at all.
Bet on it.
“Bra, too” LMAO!
The drummer, Stewart Copeland, is a damn beast....
Thus is one of the most precious reactions ever!!! Even if you didn't know red light district I thought you might get red light from old black people red light for parties and sell your body to the night. BUT your modern interpretation still works. It's brilliant!!- 😬😬😂💯
I have a good friend named Roxanne and, yes, people sing the hook to her all the time.
you can see eddie murphy singing this in 48 hrs lol
When I hear this song now all I can think of is Eddy Murphy singing it in "Beverly Hills Cop"
Thanks for bringing me back to some great high school memories. Bouncing with the Police💞
Haha this song is my really name... imagine everyone sing you this song to you your whole life 😅🤣🤣
What a fabulous name, love it!!!
Thank u 🙂.. i love my name too spelled little diff than most Roxann but it means new morning dawn :)
@@timelessharmonie3243 What a beautiful meaning, you're very lucky 😍 I'm named after a quiche 😂 xx
Awe lol its still cute... i love quiche 🥰
@@timelessharmonie3243 You are so sweet & very kind but it's an utterly pants name, i've accepted it 🤣
You said “Giggety!” 🤣😂🤣 Im dying!
