"Roxanne" is a love song for a erm, lady of the night. The piano chord in the beginning is an accident. Sting sat on the piano being tired, not realising the lid was open, hence the laughter. You need to react to Sting’s song Fortress Around Your Heart. It’s from his solo debut album The Dream of the Blue Turtles after The Police broke up. The song is beautiful in its metaphors and the Chorus is incredible. He even considers it the best Chorus he ever wrote. The full album is probably one of the most underrated albums for its lack of huge commercial success, but is considered by many to be his best work and one of the best albums in its genre. "Red light" districts are streets & neighborhoods where prostitution is legal (ex. Denmark & The Netherlands). When you see a red light on, the shop is open for business
Red light originated from the old west... The railroad workers would take their red lanterns they used to signal the trains and put them in the windows when they were visiting prostitutes.... at least that's what I remember from wild west book I read as a kid.

Cyrano (Seer-a-no) is a famous character who was in love with the dream girl Roxanne, but felt he couldn't approach her because of his rather large nose (very large!)...so he asked another man to woo Roxanne using Cyrano's words of love.
Cyrano is the only character, after he's been promised that he will fight against a hundred men single-handed, laments that there are actually fewer than a hundred present as he defeats them. What a total stud.
The police have so many wonderful fantastic hits and every one of their songs are awesome. Every time I see my friend Roxanne I always sing this name Roxanne to her from the song and she laughs.
Great song. And listen to that signature Stewart Copeland drumming. A less well known but great song by The Police is, "The Bed's Too Big Without you". Superb drums, bass, guitar and singing.
For the The Police, also listen to "Wrapped Around Your Finger" "King of Pain" "Spirits in a Material World" Also, listen to the lead singer's (Sting's) solo music, like "Fortress Around Your Heart" "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" "Be Still My Beating Heart"
This is a wonderful, meaningful, memorable song, made even more famous by Eddie Murphy in the movie "48 Hours" with Nick Nolte. But it's a very male song, with a young guy mansplaining to a prostitute how she should give up her independence to rely on a man just because he says he loves her - but isn't exactly offering a ring or any promises. Most prostitutes got into that situation after being betrayed by men. So there's a real male-chauvinistic edge to this song, unintended as it likely was, where yet another guy is trying to take control over her, take away the few choices she has left, because he feels he deserves it. "I loved ya since I've known ya" he says in the lyrics... but apparently not enough to offer her a better choice *before* she turned to prostitution. "Told you once I won't tell you again I won't share you with another boy" is his reasoning, his side, of what he's asking of her. She should just put all her trust in him, let him keep her, like a pet or a possession... He never promises forever, not even anything full time. In fact, all he seems to be offering is to support her - maybe her one client, but not at the going rate, of course. No mention of marriage, of building a life together, or even any promise never to betray her. He never says he'll be hers, but is clearly asking that she belong to him. Pretty gritty stuff, right? The song is carried by the rawness. That powerful reggae-style beat and the raw, emotional vocals give the song a feeling and emotion that isn't in the words. Which is why a song with pretty poor lyrics has become a modern classic.

The Police were an upbeat sort of dark and savage, Synchronicity II is a straight up murder ballad. Cyrano (Sirano) de Bergerac was a person who lived in the late 1500's in Paris. He was a well known writer and ladies man. Roxanne was the name of the girl he loved in the play. Steve Martin was in an updated and very sanitized movie version of the play called, "Roxanne".
Sting initially conceived that song as a tango, it sounds strange but he mentioned it in an interview, if you listen to the song carefully you can find the cadence of the tango in the melody
"Red Light" means "The Red Light District" in many countries where their are areas that prostitution is legal. Hence; "You don't have to put the red light." because "red light" in general sense means stop as the reference is always the traffic light which in this case is the opposite when the man inlove with Roxanne is telling her to turn off the red light. Sting is the lead vocalist for the band Police. He also has a successful single career.
When this came out the amount of fights caused by it was unbelievable. The Punks and people into metal music said it was one of them Sting allegedly made a statement saying it was actually white reggae
I'm pretty sure the band name "The Police" was in reference to people trying to Police lyrics in popular songs and the subject material. I liked it that they challenged us to think about these things that happen everyday (hidden from all the politics!) At the end of the day... The PEOPLE ALWAYS WIN! :)
Sting wrote this song because he was intrigued by the private lives of these women, what it's like to be a boyfriend watching his girl ply her trade. It was a massive hit. Seriously it played everywhere - you couldn't escape it for a while there. But it's an awesome song, so I never got tired of it. An example of how it saturated that year: Eddie Murphy wore headphones and sang it to himself in a jail cell in _48 Hrs,_ his first movie. (Sting said he knew he'd truly made it when he woke up in a hotel room one day and the window-washer was whistling "Roxanne".)
I lived for a while with a Beautiful Brazilian Girl with the longest legs ever who needed somewhere near her "work" that was safe and as I had some great fun with her, I fitted the bill and iy suited her. I was single with a normal Suburban house 2 miles from where she worked. I used to have a great solo Sauna. Then I would go the Master Bedroom's accompanying Jacuzzi and wait for her and afterwards.......lol I was so excited she was going to live with me but as soon as she arrived she said " I don't mix business with pleasure" and nothing EVER happened in my place. She went on holiday back to Brazil and came back to live with a guy who owned a hotel in Earls Court :)
Also keep in mind that in the UK Reggae is very popular. British Icons & Legends from Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney (RIP, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards & Ron Wood were big Fans of Reggae Music. Culture Club also were heavily influenced by Reggae with their debut Single Do You Really Want To Hurt Me. Eric Clapton did his Version of I Shot The Sherriff by Bob Marley and UB40 did their version of "Red Red Wine" written by Neil Diamond in a Reggae version that went to Number One. UB40 also did their Version of Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe" with Chrissie Hynde (Formerly Of The Pretenders) who wrote "I'll Stand By You" which was one of the last Songs that The UK Girl Group Girls Aloud did in concert before breaking up in 2013. Also on The UK Soap Opera EastEnders that debuted in 1985 they have always had Black Actors whose characters are from Jamaica and an "Extra" named Winston who runs a Music Stall.

I was 16 when this came out,it was a wicked tune then as it is 40 fucking yrs later.x
2:58 made me spit out my drink. You're smart and hilarious, thank you
Love you India
"Red Light" means "The Red Light District" in many countries where their are areas that prostitution is legal. Hence; "You don't have to put the red light." because "red light" in general sense means stop as the reference is always the traffic light which in this case is the opposite when the man inlove with Roxanne is telling her to turn off the red light. Sting is the lead vocalist for the band Police. He also has a successful single career.
"ever since I knew ya, I never talked down to ya!"
+Bridget Law "I've loved you since I knew you, I'd never talk down to you."
When this came out the amount of fights caused by it was unbelievable. The Punks and people into metal music said it was one of them Sting allegedly made a statement saying it was actually white reggae
So many Police songs and so many Sting songs in his solo career!! India, you are doing great! : - )
My mum out a red bulb in our hallway in the 80's!!!! Still living it down!!
Such a classic 😊👍
I love you. Just watched your videos for two hours. That was enough. I love you.
One of the best drummers.
Brilliant choice...and still one of their best!
Roxane was in Moulin Rouge soundtreck3... like a tango
They did a version of this in the movie “Moulin Rouge” with a tango. It’s SO good!
You are going to love this rabbit hole you are about to go down. The Police have a lot of great songs three great musicians! Try Walking On The Moon off of Regatta de Blanc.
Those harmonies.!!!! Roxanne!!....
Girl.... you WEARING them pants! I always enjoy your reactions :)
Try their song One World. Awesome drums by Copeland.
Most of their early songs were reggae inspired and actually recorded on the island of Montserrat at the Beatles owned studio before the volcano blew.
“I love horror, I love murder”... file that under “Phrases that need more context”. 😉
3:27 - "I love whore" is unfortunately what Indy actually says lol. And just for clarification I always refer to her as Indy.
@exodus21v20 absolutely lol. Still love Indy though. She is a budding UA-camr who really could be successful, she just needs some help when it comes to her speaking pace and verbage.
The best song I like from The police is “every breath you take”a real classic!
"..... walk a mile in another's shoes..." ❤
Then, when they've figured out that you stole their shoes, you have a mile start 😂
Courtesy and paraphrased and kudos to Sir Terry Pratchett 😊
My favorite by this group.
Yooooo!!! India, I stumbled across your channel, so I'm a new sub... but those Spanish joints you're reacting to had me Rollin!.. I know those songs very well and I just gotta tell you that I love your videos FR FR
The police, the music, the lyrics, legendary
Life long fan of The Police and Sting. When I was a kid I definitely didn't know what this song was about.
This is my fav of your reactions so far! 😂😂😂
