- Today I want to share with you a video that is one of the most important things you need to do properly as a ukulele player - STRUM.
Weather your a beginner or long time ukulele player, weather you play at home or in a ukulele group, strumming is most likely the thing you do most.
The thing that I have noticed is that many people just pick up a ukulele and strum what come natural to them. The problem with this approach is that most people's natural instincts are wrong.
They use improper technique which limits their talents and could cause injury.
Since I am dedicated to making you the best ukulele player that you can be, I created this video to help address the main strumming problems.
In this video I will give you 3 tips that will help you become a great strummer on the uke.
We will discuss:
1. Which finger to use when strumming.
2. Where to strum on the ukulele.
3. Looseness and flexibility of the wrist.

Why can’t anyone go slow and assume you have zero practice
LITERALLY
@@croctropthot NAH FR I'M STRUGGLING...

@rachelprichard5200 same 💀
Change the speed of your video😊
This was incredibly helpful. I’m self taught and been playing it for the last year. I’ve really struggled with using my index finger to strum. Telling us to bring it down to where the neck of the ukulele meets the base has made all the difference in the world!!
Hi Paul, glad it has helped your playing. Thank you for your feedback :)
Do you strum with the side of your finger or your nail? I have been strumming with my nail and it sounds awful against the strings. I have no idea what I am doing wrong.
I’m in the same boat my friend
Ugh same i just keep using my pick
Did you find the solution ?
@@lonelyberg1808 I did. I started strumming with the side of my finger and moved my strumming hand towards the fret away from the sound hole. Sounds much better.
@@kmeinnc1 i tried that and holy fuck my finger is in pain
First video I've found that actually talks about rotating the wrist and not moving up and down. Think this is going to help loads. Thanks
As a self teaching uke player this is so so sooo helpful!!
Brilliant lesson, thanks!!!! I play other instruments but just decided on a whim to pick up a ukelele to sing a couple Christmas songs. Your lesson gave a quick gateway to good sound and good playing habits. Thanks!
Awesome videos! Better than any other ukulele tutorials online! I also subscribed.
I’ve been playing ukulele for a year and a half now, and I’ve come to realize I’ve been strumming wrong this whole time. (I’ve been doing it with my thumb nail near the sound hole) I’m excited to try this out!
This has completely transformed my ukulele playing!
You need more views, after a year of failing to do songs because of my attempts of strumming, this video was a life changer
THIS was soooo helpful to me!! THANK YOU!! I've been learning to play for quite some time now but I consistently struggle with strumming. (Grew up studying classical piano...). This is the first video that has made it understandable and helped me get a handle on it!! Thank you sooo much!
Howdy I noticed you used to play piano and are getting into guitar.
Well...I play guitar and would like to play piano....where do I start?
The loose wrist part is the trick! Thanks for the video!
Does anyone else’s fingers just get caught between the strings or is that only me 😅
Change the strings and get better quality ones
@@capndreadful2241 or strum lightly
Most grateful for this : thanks so much.
Appreciative 70 y.o. Aussie beginner.
awesome, thanks for the tips
Thank you for your tutorial 🥰
very helpful thanks man
Thank you this helped me!
Thank you so much for this video! although short, it was exceptionally helpful
Glad you enjoyed it!
That's a great sounding uke.
THANK YOU! This whole time I’ve been strumming over the sound hole and wondering why I couldn’t keep the dang ukulele in place without a strap😂
I can’t believe how incredibly helpful this is! I am INSTANTLY significantly better, Thank you!!!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching :D
How to you down strum with your index finger without hitting the strings with your fingernail? Or am I supposed to be doing with with my fingernail? Thanks
Thanks so much for the video! I am not sure if I am getting the right sound out of my strum with my index finger though, because it sounds a little too "tappy/clackity" when my nail hits the chord. Up until now I have been strumming with only my thumb because it gives a nice warmer, softer tone. I want to switch over to index strumming though, so do you have any advice for getting that softer sound? Thank you!
Very simple but extremely helpful!!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching :)
Yeah I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with my fingers but that uke he’s using has an amazing warm sound.
Loving the new improved approach Terry well done
Thank you I apprecaite it.
when I'm using my index finger, it gets stuck at the strings every now and then... can someone tell me how to improve that?
Your a great teacher love your videos
Hi Danny! thank you and thanks for watching :)
When you use your index finger to strum, what part of the finger do you want to use? Because when I strum with my index finger, it tends to get caught on one string making it stand out and not have a clear sound when I play a chord (if that makes sense)
I’m assuming you want to use like the pad of your finger but in the video, it looks like you are almost using the tip or the nail of your finger.
Same issue
I have the same problem. Everytime I strum my fingers get caught in the cords
helpful!!
Merci!
Thanks. Nice to know more detailed things playing uku.
Cool, glad it helped.
too good
woah, i have been trying several ways but it seemed tough, like index finger and thumb ......... but bruhhhhhhhh this sollved everything
I like to use a pick when playing my ukulele. Any tips or pointers?
As a beginner uke player this helped me out a lot! Thanks!

My finger sometimes hits the strum and I don't know how to fix it :( I don't think like doing anything wrong.
Great video! Can you please do a tutorial for the strumming you were doing? It sounded so cool.
Thank you for the kind words.
Sounds like DDUUDU
Thanks!!!!!!!
No problem! Thanks for watching :)
Amazing! In just over a minute with this video, my strumming improved 10X! Thank yoU!!!
That's awesome, Great job! Thank you for watching :D
the sides of my fingers get caught on the strings i am not sure what i’m doing wrong
Same
What's the strum pattern I struggle so bad with strumming
I’ve always strum with my thumb. is there any reason why I might need to change that?
I have practiced strumming for 3 days now and i still cant get my fucking wrist to work correctlu
What happens if ur ukulele sounds like a banjo 🪕 when first got and not that sound
but when i use my index finger it sounds like shit because i hit the string with my nail (even tho it's short!) :/ what am i doing wrong?
For other guitarists - just strum it like a guitar, but over the neck joint rather than over the sound hole.
My finger gets caught on the first string when I come up. Help!
how tf do you do this without grinding your fingers off??????
What kind of ukulele are you playing?
i like the way you pronounce ‘ukulele’ lol 😅
Thank you, I try to say it right but I'm sure Hawaiians would still say I'm saying it wrong.
Yes apparently the proper term is *Oo-Koo-Lay-Lay*
He's not wrong, but I like to think of the name of the Ukulele as the sound GCEA 🎼
@@cozbibibi711 Nope. It's yoo-kuh-lei-lee
@@yeoldefoxeh254 you’re an idiot
I am french and we pronounce it "youkoulélé" ( like him )
Hell yeah
cool
Re 'going slow: At start, go to the settings gear icon at top right of video - and change the speed!
Im using my sisters ukulele and this is really hard for me so I’m just getting the basics and I now know my first chord
Soooooo I'm a self taught uke player and I've been using my thumb up till now......
Do u strum with ur nails cuz I don't have any 😢
When I strum I get my fingers hit on the strings and my fingers get hurt
i think im doing something wrong. when i strum, i sound like im trying to play all the strings at once
You should.
Do you use your nails when you strum?
And why do some say to put the thumb and index finger together like you’re holding an imaginary pick?
Buuuut do you use your nail or no??? I instinctively use it but idk if that’s correct :(
Up stum is my problem
I subscribed you so you can teach me
Trying and trying and trying, but still my forefinger catches on those two outer strings. I have a sneaking feeling it has become a source of mental and thereby physical tension which is not going to help. If somebody cracks the way to resolve this they will instantly make the ukulele and similar instruments 100 times as popular.
I would lay odds this is the reason Facebook Marketplace and similar sites are full of ukuleles that have barely been touched and are now for sale. That can't be sensible. Who will find a way to resolve this? And I don't mean just putting the lonely, barely-touched ukulele on Craig's List or whatever.
HOW DO YOU NOT GET COUGHT IN THE STRINGS WHEN YOU GO UP
FR
FR
My finger always gets caught in the strings
Not usefull at all, nobody tells us how to put our finger on the strings, i strum with my nail and it sounds awful so im assuming im doing it wrong, so nails or not? And also what position the index finger has to have to sound good? Also when i strum up my finger gets caught in the strings
so you strum near the neck and not the hole... interesting
Yes due to the smaller body size of the ukulele it is comfortable and sounds better to strum higher up from the sound hole.
Feel like strumming is the hardest part of playing the uke
It definitely feels like it i can't figure it out
This was VERY helpful!!!!!! Thank you!!!
Also… I feel like this is every woman trying to explain to men how things work 🤣😂🤣 I’m so sorry lol.
Why don’t you say “youkalaylee”?
Can you go any faster😢
Ukulele is one of those instruments where if you know how to strum good you basically have everything you need to make noise that sounds good
too fast :( in most of those movies noone shows almost in slow motion how to position hand and fingers, what angle it should have and so on. it reminds me how to draw a horse....first draw few lines and then art style horse is ready
We understand. youtube does have the ability to slow down videos to help you see exactly what is going on.
Its "yu, ku, lei, lei" not "oo, ke, lei, lei"
Yes but HOW THE FUCK DO YOU DO IT
Whys my man say OOKalele
Why do you go so fast lol. This isn't a beginner tutorial.
Too fast
As a banjo player, this did not help me at all.
Looks like he didnt even strummed the ukulele😒
How did anyone find this helpful…
Tf is this bullshit
Bro teaching us like we invented the ukulele
Worst video for learners 😂
