This is a great tutorial! I just started playing the ukulele a few weeks ago and this is the first tutorial I found that broke down the strumming pattern showing notes (half, quarter, eighth), so this made so much more sense to me as a violin player. I am really loving strumming on my new Lanikai MA-C Concert Uke 💞❤️
Yes! I play concert band instruments, and I'm a teacher, and I struggled with all the ukulele videos for kids, that didn't teach how the strum patterns fit into the counting. I like that there's the actual notation shown, really helps to reinforce my other music lessons. I'm playing my daughter's Fender tenor ukulele.
Thank you, Terry! I've been playing for six months and caught on to fingerstyle a lot more naturally than strumming (I'm just not that cool). These simple patterns will be extremely helpful as I continue mastering my mahogany Kala concert uke.
Been binge watching/practicing with you for an hr. I have years passed experience with strumming chords in guitar but have forgotten most of it. Now I have a new guitalele and and having fun relearning and playing around with the bottom 4 strings as well. Keep sending out videos, Terry! I need them!
There are a lot of really good teachers on youtube and everyone needs to do the hardwork of spending time with each to find out which teaching style works best for you. I've gone through several now and I will revisit them all but so far your teaching style works best for me. Thanks so much!
This is the best tutorial for anyone trying to learn the uke .....hands down. This video made me want to comment for a video for the first time in my life. Awesome method of teaching too.
I'm a beginner, I have a concert Donner Ukelele, I've watched so many videos the last few days learning about my instrument, i know absolutely nothing about Ukelele, so after learning how to tune and a few cords i wanted to get educated on strumming , but nothing really covers strumming quit like this I'm learning how to hold my Ukelele and the steady pressure im comfortable using and where to strum. These videos are great , I will be coming back for more lessons., these are by far the best I've found a little fast but definitely informative, 🎉😊 thanks a bunch
I love to switch between C and Em when practicing my strumming. As barely a beginner - they’re easy to swap between while providing variation so you can feel out the beats of the strumming
I take lessons with my daughter. She fingerpicks the melody on her Luna Soprano Uke while I do the island strum on my gold tone concert Banjolele. It’s been fun learning and playing songs together.

I have a Vangoa tenor Ukalele. I've only been playing a month now & absolutely love it! I've already found & printed out SO many songs that I think are great for the Uke. Our little mountain town has a group that practices 1x/wk in the library basement & perform @various fests throughout the year. I'm having so much fun! I feel like I got the chord work down but really needed strumming options/techniques. Your video was amazing...thank u so much!! Love your hair!
Terry - it was awesome to see someone break down the "grandaddy" strum pattern into notes. I hear it a lot in the music I try to play, but now I can count it out. Thanks Terry
I am such a beginner, I watched the whole video once through before I picked up the uke! I have learned so much in 5 minutes! I’ll be watching them all, lol. I’m playing my friend’s Lanikai
I've owned this dammed thing for a year and a half and had NO confidence I'd ever strummed. Dude, you just made me do something I never thought I would. 😁
This was really helpful. I replayed the section on the island strum several times, and I think I'm getting it. One thing that helped me was when I noticed that you move your hand through the pattern, even though you don't touch the strings on the down stroke where you aren't playing it. So your hand is in the right position for the upstroke on the next beat. When I was trying to figure it out on my own that hadn't occurred to me, so I always seemed to be on the wrong beat. So -- THANK YOU! I've been playing for about 2 weeks. I have an Concert size Enya with a carbon fiber body. I bought this one because the climate here is very dry, and the carbon fiber doesn't react to humidity changes. Thanks again.
Ukulele is very popular here in Asia. New beginner here. I'll subscribe Mr. Terry. I like this lesson very much. Not sure if you comment, but keep up the great work and the free stuff which goes along way.
This is very helpful, especially as a newbie player! I’m learning ukulele on my tenor Outdoor ukulele since 3/23 and just found your channel - thank so much for the tutorials!
I’m using a Millar Soprano & like this lesson very much-THANK YOU - I’m a beginner learning to get over a bought of depression, the music helps soooo much!!!
Thanks Terry. This was very helpful. Just got my first Ukulele last week. I tried guitar 20 years ago, but failed miserably ;-). So I became a band nerd ( baritone horn) instead. Now as a Music Educator for Pre K children it would be nice to be able to accompany them with something besides a piano. So I've decided to give the strings another try.
Thanks Terry! Got all 7 - love the island strum. Guitar player discovering the joys of baritone ukulele on my Pono MB. Have almost completed your Baritone Ukulele Boot Camp (3 more lessons) and am having a blast. I appreciate how you easily slip music theory into your videos.
I just got a Lanikai QM-BLCET Tenor. I'm a mountain dulcimer player, also a little guitar. I'm watching your videos because I want to see how the ukulele is the same, and different, from these other instruments. I appreciate your enthusiasm and exeprtise.
I have a soprano uke and it's a Martin. It's beautiful and old and in excellent condition. I only know a few basic chords and am now working on strumming. This was a great video.
Tenor (also have soprano) enya. I enjoyed this vid. I play several songs and several chords but timing and different strumming patterns are challenging.
Loved it~! This is the first time I have seen where someone has explained different strums in detail like this. EXCELLENT JOB!!! THE BEST!! I have 2-Soprano, Concert, and Tenor - KALA, and I have 2 Concerts by Luna! I love my Luna, especially my Luna Concert Crescent Spalted Maple!
Hi! Great tutorial! I’m a violin player and just picked up a Lanikai concert uke. I have some songs I’m working on so these strumming patterns are key! Thank you!
So much easier to understand! Chords weren't much an issue but strumming and strum pattern is my kryptonite. Playing on a soprano Fender Venice, powder blue
Been learning for six weeks. Have a Kala Travel Concert Ukulele. Find it very tight when playing d chord. Have been practicing a lot. Your strumming patterns are helping
I’ve been playing since I was about 15….76 now and very handicapped. I have a Martin soprano and Fender Concert. Trying to encourage myself to pick it up again. I’m pretty good at what I know but have a ton more to learn.
To answer your question lol i believe At 6:59 you played this chord progression: C, F, G7, C! 😉😉. And i practice on a soprano, but also on a concert when i feel more comfortable with what im learning. AND i just purchased the ‘Ohana CK-35CGE concert Uke! SOOO excited for it to arrive
Thanks! 5 got it. Learning on a cheap, secondhand Kala KA-15S. Really liked seeing the notation patterns since as a seasoned musician who has never played a stringed instrument, the visuals along with the aural made the patterns crystal clear. I'll keep using your tutorials.
I learnt on a £30 ukulele which was really really bad but I thought as long as I can learn where to put my fingers I can then put money into buying a better one which I did
Thank you for the video! Just got my first ukulele last week and this helped me feel so much more comfortable and relaxed with it. I have a Tanglewood Tiare Tenor and I'm loving it! Beautiful sound and easy for me to play!
Really appreciate seeing the sheet music as you play, thank you
I graduated from Berklee College of Music but this is worth a Semester!! Much olbiged
Hi. Just started playing the Ukulele. Never played anything before. Thank you for making it look so easy. It makes me want to keep trying. :)
