OMG back when my best friend was in her first year in med school, she told me the instructor was showing how strong a vein is by pulling this dog's vein that they had to practice on, and everyone was like OH NOOO AHHH STAAAHHHPPP but the vein didn't break.
Just bought a ukulele for my 4 year old boy and I am the one who actually is doing the study. I find this reallt helpful. Your explanation is in depth, just the way I want it to be. Thanks so much Cynthia!
Just started my uke this weekend and three little birds was my first song learned thanks to you. Watched a few other channels since then to try other songs and found out how much better your tutorials are. Love that you include the visuals of the chords on the screen, and build stepby step with time to practice slowly before putting things together. So many teachers just assume the chords are memorized and go from a basic overview into full speed. Thank you!
I'm soooo happy that I found this video about strumming I've been struggling with this for so long and you just made it super easy in less than 10 min. Thank you so much!!!

You are my life saver!!! I have literally watched tons of other strumming videos and this is the first one that helped me. It seemed so easy after watching you! I almost gave up my ukulele. Thank you!!!
Cynthia, I'm trying to talk myself into buying a ukulele. what kind should I buy? I'm 6ft tall with big hands, and 67yrs old, and lazy and bored to death. I realized that I was starting to talk to the cat the other day. I've got to get a hobby. Or the cat might start talking back to me.
My boyfriend bought me a ukulele for my birthday because I had made a few comments before about how I'd like to learn later in life, Makala by Kala. It's a pretty great uke, my hands are on the small side though (which is why I wanted to learn instead of a guitar like him)
@@BlueSmurfee I'm 6'5". I can manage a concert, but a tenor fits me much better physically. The fretboard is way too small to play comfortably on a soprano.
I just did 5 other teachers do intro or strum lessons and thought I must have bum hands cause couldn't get a consistent strum. This video is the best! You explained strumming so usefully, LOVE your work and thank you from a complete string instrument newb.
Thank you so much for this video!! I felt so lost not understanding why I wasn't getting this most basic thing right - so basic that other channels/tutorials didn't think it was worth covering! I almost thought there was something wrong with me lol thank you again!!!
Hands down the most digestible lesson I've seen on strumming any instrument, I knew it was simple but I could never pick or strum right, now feels a million times more natural than anything I was trying to teach myself. Even started the video thinking, clipped my nails so won't actually be able to do this for real until later. But believe it or not, I kept trying to wedge my finger under there and what do you know but I was able to do it, then actually repeat it the same way. This is one of the first times I've actually felt on a stringed instrument, maybe even others, that I wanted to do it again to hear myself play it like I hear others do it, instead of to try and do it better next time because it wasn't right and never repeatable. Need to rewatch your chord movement video, think it's going to be even better because I'll be watching in a new way. Thank you so much, strumming may seem small which had made it feel so daunting. Maybe I can even learn to make a guitar sound good, I believe ! 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so very much for this tutorial. Today is day #2 of ukulele practice for me and while I picked up the C, F, and G chords fairly quickly yesterday, strumming had me all messed up! In hind site, I probably did the two lessons backwards. Anyway, this tutorial was absolutely perfect and had me strumming away in no time!
Wow that has been very helpful - thank you. I have been learning to play for about 6 months and only realised today that all of my strumming has been too light and therefore all the notes have not been very clear at all. I just thought what I was learning sounded okay, but after watching your tutorial I know now that most of my strumming has been just scratching the surface of the strings. I could certainly hear a major difference between using my thumb and index finger.
You’re the BEST instructor- for legit anything- I’ve ever listened to. Your clarity and lack of rationalizing your method but straightforward concise and best of all- detailed- guidance is finally making this make sense and now I wish you’d just teach everything I also need to learn in life. Seriously. Other instructors should be watching you so they can drop the endless analogies that make zero sense and their never ending whining need to justify their own styles. It’s wasted time and at the end we learn nothing from them. You remove the artifice and made me not want to give up and throw this thing in the bin and take up target shooting (specifically equivocating male guitarists who end sentences with prepositions.) Seriously. Thank you. This was awesome. ❤️❤️❤️

this is amazing. I just started playing and a lot of strumming tutorials are so vague I didn't really understand how i was supposed to do it. This is so precise and also gives you some exercises to prepare. It's perfect, thank you so much!
Awesome lesson video! Just started to pick up this new instrument and couldn't figure how the strumming works since I play violin for the longest time.. After this my strumming actually sounds decent! xD
This was the best tutorial for beginner strumming. It’s the first one that actually helped me because I’ve been struggling with this for a long time. And the videos of experienced players telling me I could play with all my fingers and not explaining curved fingers wasn’t very helpful. Thanks again!💛
Is it normal that when I strum with my nail it sounds sharp and neat, but when I strum with my flesh it sounds more mellow...? I don't know if it's normal and it kind of sounds weird ! :/ Help me
Well it doesn't really change. The only way to change it is with the way you strum. Focus with hitting your finger tips against the string. It will hurt for a while but your fingers will toughen up soon enough.
Does anyone else strum down with their thumb and up with their index finger? I've pretty much always strummed that way and I don't really see a problem with it
That's how I started out. I really like the sound of some of the other less symmetric strums with multiple fingernail contacts, though. I think I need to find an instructor to show me those specifically, unless someone has a good reference video to share?
I've been going slow and slowly going faster. That's been helping. Also, I find it helpful to angle the uke just a tad forward (like parallel to my body) since I have the habit of looking at it tilted to I can see my fingers- that helped me. :)
This helped me so much! I did my first class yesterday but I was the only student whose never played a string instrument before so I'm having a rough time. I'm glad I searched this up, thank you so much!
I’ve seen so many videos and yours is the only one that literally told me everything thing I need to know. You are an amazing instructor! Thank you so much😁
Hello there, I'm just starting to learn to play the Ukulele and and came across your videos. I have the soprano version of the Uk and I was wondering where exactly i'm going to strum the Uk. Should I be strumming it across the fret board or closer to the hole?
Cynthia, I just started playing the Ukulele; I bought a Cordoba 30T (Tenor) to learn on. Strumming (Consistently) was not where I wanted it to be at until I saw your video. After watching your video, my improvement was so much better than before. You've done an extremely great job of explaining the Art of Strumming. I've watched (many) other videos but my "Light Bulb Moment" came after seeing yours. My Volume and Clarity is so much better. Thank you for all of your time and effort in making these videos.
This helped me out so so so much - managed to get the island strumming (still needs practice) in one night (02/04/2020) thanks to you! So thank you very much! 💜
This video was very helpful! I've only been playing for a few days so I figured I'd learn how to strum with my index finger before I became to used to my thumb. Just a question, when I strum downward am I supposed to be able to hear my nail hitting the strings?
You’re a wonderful teacher! I was so close to giving up on using my index finger and just using my thumb but I went through your steps and it just clicked! Thank you!
In some cases it might be good because when I play the G chord it always sound like the B chord. If you skip the A chord, the G chord will sound more like the G chord.
Wow! It actually works on me. I used to be do some 'whatever' strum on ukulele, what i think is 'as long as i can hear the melody and it's right then it's okay'. But it harder when i try to strum and there's someone following me to singing. So, i try to learn how to strumming in the right way. And this video actually made it really easier than before😭 thanks a lot. I'll try to learn so I'll used to doin this strum😭❤️👍🙏
It's probably because it's smaller. The smaller an instrument is, the higher pitched it sounds. Hers is a concert ukulele I think, that's why it may sound deeper. Does yours sound fat or sharp compared to hers?
I've seen several ukulele beginner videos. This is the first video that I've seen where details were given about strumming. Thank you this is excellent.
Hello past self, you just got a uke for your birthday and now struggling to learn the cords. Yayyyy!!!! Future self. Please update me about your progress.
You are marvelous Cynthia Lin!! I felt that I needed to go back and review strumming techniques since I am still a beginner, but I seem to be favoring my thumb. This was an excellent and effective review for me to see on how to "graduate" to using my index finger to strum, and not always my thumb. I was having difficulty doing that transition on my own until I saw your detailed tutorial. Thank you!
strumming doesn't really hurt my finger. But holding down the frets... now THAT'S a killer

SAME WHAT DO I DO PLEASE HELP
This is such a helpful video. Thanks for demonstrating so slowly and clearly. It really does make a difference.
Great help, thanks. Hope you'll show us how to strum using all fingers on a future video!
Ordered myself a ukelele , it comes on Monday. Until then i’m watching ukelele tutorials. :)))))
best person i found for ukulele , been trying for weeks but didn't got this clear explanation on any other channel
Me: *panicking because everyone in my house is asleep besides me while I do this*
I’m doing this at 3:AM rn
My fingers keeps getting caught on the strings when I try to strum up and down more quickly. Is there any way I can fix this?
this is amazing.
After this my strumming actually sounds decent! xD
DaveMusic BRO SAME I PLAY THE VIOLIN AND THIS IS SO HARD OMFFMFMFMFMFMFMMFMFMF
I broke the string........
@@tatenshoemaker3965 this made me giggle
😂😂😂
I hope you didn't give up on the uke
@@tatenshoemaker3965 same , i almost myself
This was the best tutorial for beginner strumming. It’s the first one that actually helped me because I’ve been struggling with this for a long time. And the videos of experienced players telling me I could play with all my fingers and not explaining curved fingers wasn’t very helpful. Thanks again!💛
This is the scariest ukulele tutorial iv'e ever watched
why
stop thats rude
Thomas Dignan simp
Thomas Dignan they’re just scared to break the ukelele hahaha
@@thomasdignan2774 how is that rude?? they're just scared to break the string🤨😒
I was like why is she talking so slow sis high or sum then I realised my playback speed was slow asf
Omg!! Mine was the same!! No kidding.
Thank you so much!!!!! I played guitar before and thought I knew how to strum haha! Ukulele is completely different, I needed this! Thank you 😊
Is it normal that when I strum with my nail it sounds sharp and neat, but when I strum with my flesh it sounds more mellow...? I don't know if it's normal and it kind of sounds weird ! :/ Help me
don't worry, it's normal
x XCookies4EverX x
Okay thanks ! But will it change or no ? Because it doesn't sound really good !
Well it doesn't really change. The only way to change it is with the way you strum. Focus with hitting your finger tips against the string. It will hurt for a while but your fingers will toughen up soon enough.
+x XCookies4EverX x okay thank you
+Miss_Lya not a problem :)
Does anyone else strum down with their thumb and up with their index finger? I've pretty much always strummed that way and I don't really see a problem with it
i was doing that until i watched this, it makes it sound duller i guess and quieter
no theres no problem with it imo
I don’t like the way it sounds when I use my nail so I like to do it down with thumb and up with index🤷♀️
I use my index finger to strum down and thumb to strum up : /
That's how I started out. I really like the sound of some of the other less symmetric strums with multiple fingernail contacts, though. I think I need to find an instructor to show me those specifically, unless someone has a good reference video to share?
I don't think I've ever improved my technique at an instrument so dramatically in such a short span of time. thank you sooooo much!
*0:49* women: ur not gonna break a string
My unintelligent self: breaks a string *sigh*
I have problems with strumming upwards😭
EDIT: MASTERED IT
i have the opposite problem lmao i just cant seem to get it right ;(
samee :((
I've been going slow and slowly going faster.

Finally a class I can go to without my camera on 🙄
It really hurts my index finger, I'm a lot better with my thumb, I wish I could do my index finger
the more you play, the firmer your finger tips become! you'll develop calluses over time
yes me too but im tfying to do it with my 4 fingers and its really hard
TimesTen i got my uke just a few days ago and my index finger hurts soooo badly xD
Search for Strumdicapped and get in early.

Should I be strumming it across the fret board or closer to the hole?
how to strum upwards?
lauren I use the top of my thumb / thumb nail
lauren literally do the same, take it slow and it will eventually come up you :€
Lol thumbnail. I'm stuppid
I hate to mention this, but stupid only has one p. LOL
ah downs He's stupid so he's excused
Cynthia, I just started playing the Ukulele; I bought a Cordoba 30T (Tenor) to learn on. Strumming (Consistently) was not where I wanted it to be at until I saw your video. After watching your video, my improvement was so much better than before. You've done an extremely great job of explaining the Art of Strumming. I've watched (many) other videos but my "Light Bulb Moment" came after seeing yours. My Volume and Clarity is so much better. Thank you for all of your time and effort in making these videos.
“Put pressure on the fret board”
*sweats nervously because my fret board doesn’t go down all the way to the hole
neither does mine but its much easier to strum higher on the uke where the fret board starts
This helped me out so so so much - managed to get the island strumming (still needs practice) in one night (02/04/2020) thanks to you! So thank you very much! 💜
BFF LOVE!29:) how is it going now? 💕
I love your lessons- clearest easiest non intimidating of all I have watched.. thank you!
Her: don’t worry, you won’t break it.
the comments: I broke it.
me: alright, I’ll strum extra soft
This video was very helpful! I've only been playing for a few days so I figured I'd learn how to strum with my index finger before I became to used to my thumb. Just a question, when I strum downward am I supposed to be able to hear my nail hitting the strings?
Also, do you have any tips on volume control? Thanks again :)
+notmeggiemoo i got the exact same problem must be doing something wrong
Cut your nails
I have the same problem strumming down with my index finger nail hitting the strings making a clicking sound. Nails are trimmed close.
You’re a wonderful teacher! I was so close to giving up on using my index finger and just using my thumb but I went through your steps and it just clicked! Thank you!
A ' plucking ' good video, madam.
When i strum up, i always miss the A... just ECG... lol
I always miss the E :P
In some cases it might be good because when I play the G chord it always sound like the B chord.
If you skip the A chord, the G chord will sound more like the G chord.
Wow! It actually works on me. I used to be do some 'whatever' strum on ukulele, what i think is 'as long as i can hear the melody and it's right then it's okay'. But it harder when i try to strum and there's someone following me to singing. So, i try to learn how to strumming in the right way. And this video actually made it really easier than before😭 thanks a lot. I'll try to learn so I'll used to doin this strum😭❤️👍🙏
My ukulele sounds nothing like yours even when it's tuned, mine sounds bad
it might be a different type
i have a tiny soprano ukulele mine sounds nothing like hers either haha
+Katrina Zakala I also have a tiny supremo and it doesn't sound the same either xD
It's probably because it's smaller. The smaller an instrument is, the higher pitched it sounds. Hers is a concert ukulele I think, that's why it may sound deeper. Does yours sound fat or sharp compared to hers?
Disfigured Batman Painting It's a tenor ukulele
2:19 "yeahhh..." 😂😂😂
I've seen several ukulele beginner videos. This is the first video that I've seen where details were given about strumming. Thank you this is excellent.
Because of quarantine I actually learned how to play the ukulele 👁👄👁
I'm just here because I want to be dodie
Hello past self, you just got a uke for your birthday and now struggling to learn the cords. Yayyyy!!!! Future self. Please update me about your progress.
Futer thea vinci, why have you not updated her?
Thea Vinci I have to agree with Niki, why have you not updated her ? ;-;
I’d like an update from future Thea Vinci
Thea Vinci I want a update please
You are marvelous Cynthia Lin!! I felt that I needed to go back and review strumming techniques since I am still a beginner, but I seem to be favoring my thumb. This was an excellent and effective review for me to see on how to "graduate" to using my index finger to strum, and not always my thumb. I was having difficulty doing that transition on my own until I saw your detailed tutorial. Thank you!
My hands are sweaty so I can’t play that well
