Google Pixel 8a Two Weeks Later - Hero Or Villain?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 чер 2024
- This is the Pixel 8a, what Google calls as Colorful, Powerful, AI-full, and what I’m gonna call the best flagship for most people, even if yes, this technically isn’t a flagship. See, at this point, we’ve become accustomed to getting the best performance, photos, and even features from flagships, but if we’re honest, none of us like the price. Many praised OnePlus for creating such a thing the flagship killer, meaning mostly the best of everything for less money, but the company that actually deserves that title is Google. The Nexus 4 was the first time I remember a company giving us mostly the best of everything at half the price. For context, 2012’s iPhone 5 was $649, when the Nexus 4 was just $299. The only problem? Well by mostly I mean you got the best chips and some of the best hardware, but boy howdy did those photos suck. Google’s Nexus project barely figured some of it out at the tail end of the Nexus 6P, and by the time OnePlus figured it out with the 10 Pro, it already had a flagship price tag. I wish I could tell you that some of the Premium-Midrange offerings from Samsung get this right, but after testing everything under the sun, the last night in shinning armor is The Pixel 8a.. Sort of. I’m Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow, and let me explain to you why in our full review..

I miss the older Pocketnow logo.
Yeah, the new one is awful
I thought it was a bootleg PocketNow lol.
People said that last time it changed but soon got used to the new one.
@@davidjacobs6244 but this is genuinely one of the worst logos I've seen in my life. Not just wrt pocketnow. I've been watching pocketnow since the Michael Fisher days.
@@davidjacobs6244 I'm not sure I'll get used to this. Last time it was a welcome change, refreshing to see change if you may. This is something else.
I've been using the 8a for a week now and I really like it. The biggest positive is the form factor. I'm tired of using 6.7 in phones and it's nice to have one where I can hold and use with 1 hand. The bezels could be thinner but doesn't bother me that much.
↑↑↑我也发了!!
I've currently got a Pixel 6a, and I'm just waiting for a deal on an 8a before upgrade, as my 6a is still doing everything I need it to do just fine.
I've noticed that most people update their pixels especially A series, every couple of years. Most people don't even use the 3 years of android updatws before switching so I wonder if the newly promised 7 years is possible and if so will people hold their goog devices for 5 years finally?!
🤷🏼♂️
@@3rdWorldNola The longer update schedule also helps for resale value.
@@3rdWorldNola For me, my Pixel 6a was my first Pixel and it was always meant to be temporary. My Note 9 took a hit after a change was made to the cell towers, no longer able to make or receive phone calls. My experience was mostly positive with the 6a but the screen size was too small. With that in mind I stuck to the Pixel 8 Pro and I intend to keep it for the full 7 years. I'm not much for specs but I hope it's at least still functional within that time.
Yeah never ever pay full retail price for pixel phone
I had the 6a for 3 months. Nice phone. Took too long to charge. I just tossed it in the trash.
Good to see you’re catching up, Jaime! Can’t wait for the Reviews on the M2 Air and M4 Pro!
I love the father and son bond. Excellent review as always.
Ridiculous value this phone here in the UK £300 for a near flagship camera and great performance with 7 years of software support is incredible.
Yes, you must be very picky when complaining about £300 for the Pixel 8a. However I cannot find it at that price without a carrier deal. It is £500 on the Google Store.
Great review !!! I think you hit all the high note. again Great Video.
In Portugal you can get the 256GB version for 260€ (290-300$) which for me looks like a steal of a deal.
where?
@@JoaoCosta-xt7fe Vodafone, with their points (1450 I think it was). I received mine today :)
I bought my google pixel 8a for €214.99 on vodafone. It's an amazing price for this phone
Is it with a carrier plan? Otherwise it might be worth importing from there.
@@PatrikKron Hi, the phone its free to use with any carrier BUT to get it extra discounted I use points from that specific carrier which keep me contracted for 12 months (my contract had more than that so no changes). Without those points the phone is at the same price like any other place. And to be honest, that one discount is gone already too, now you can only get it for around 400€. I did bought mine at that time for 260€ and I love it!
Absolutely right - this is a killer phone! It does it all, it does it well & it doesn't cost a small fortune.
Most people do NOT need the extra power and abilities of a top model EVER!!!
Yes they do....too many whiners always cry about taking a while for updates and not having stuff
People must remember that the average user keeps their phone for 4-5 years, some even longer. Having the fastest chip when new means it is future-proofed. But as you imply, some people never use their phone to 50% of its potential, so they will be fine. I suspect they will be the target audience for the mid-range chips, which, sadly, I have to classify as Tensor 3.
a consistent and informative review. saw several others that are just fireworks and echoing repetitive ideas
"this review plays to my biases, so its the best one!"
This has warmed my heart. 😊.
Thanks for taking us back to the good days! 👍
I appreciate your review on the Pixel 8a (and all your reviews 😊) Jaime. But I have to mention that many reviewers throw shade at pixel devices for their lack of gaming capabilities. I'm not sure I understand or agree with that. I have owned many pixel devices and I play some demanding games like COD mobile, PUBG and last day on earth. Never had any hiccups in performance and I run at high settings. Am I alone on this?
Keep up the good work!
I played so many games in my pixel 6a without any issues...
What a great review 👌🏾
love the new pocketnow logo but i think the color scheme is ... interesting lol
glad to finally see this phone in the flesh and not in some rumor roundup for months on end
Nice review Jaime 👍
If Google do swap to the TSMC processor for the Pixel 10a? Then it will be a proper flagship killer.
Just got one and a love it!
Please reply,
Which generation usb c is in it?
Does this hit badly when we record for continuous 1 hour?
It costs $500 IN THE USA. In Europe this phone is 600 euro for the 128 Gb version, way overpriced.
There are plenty of deals available. Google Fi is offering $200 off, Amazon has deals as well as the Google store. You would be dumb to pay full price.
... and in Australia $899
In India Pixel 8a is the same price as OnePlus 12.
Is the 2x crop the secret? For me, every Tensor Pixel takes nice video until you start walking. I would think that the crop would increase the impact tremors. Is this not the case?
One of the best parts of the pixel 8A is having the plastic back. Especially since I hate using a case on my phones
Use a good case my glass never broken, back case
Still a hero to me im enjoying it heavily
Portland, JAMAICA in the Building!!! 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
This is the first Pixel that follows the Nexus formula. Smart move, considering inflation is here to stay.
I like the new Pocket own logo, but not feeling the color choice. Do a few color swaps and see which looks the best.
Still shaky on the zoom when recording videos.
Existing Google Fi users can get this for $299
Hmm. I am interested in the google payment plan on that. But mostly im legaly blind or i have restricted vision so i like the smaller size. What ive not found on you tube is how is its voice to text and can it say comment on a youtube video. I do like high contrast as its easier to see
It is good to see you after years I did not see you ,looks❤ great
Im loving it ❤
What happened to your logo? It looks like a grandpa driven, outdated antique "tech" shop from the early 2000s
Jesus Christ people really will whine about ANYTHING!!
Nope it's wonderful and wimpy boys always want changes
word so true can get a pixel tab and wacth for less than a 1200 thats value over functionality which pixel not that far behind thats niced to know
I think it depends what you want. If you want performance OnePlus 12r and if you want cameras Pixel 8a
With OP12R you can have both performance and camera with the latest GCam APK.
I'll really have a problem in the next 2 years. I have a note 20 ultra and typically keep my phones for 4 plus years. Nothing today has the same features and I doubt one in the future will either
I agree
owned the Nexus 4, the LG4, pixel 3a and i recently went from Pixel 4a to 8a. Nice upgrade from the 4a. The 8a is the first phone owned that can be used in sunlight --a game changer. I miss the removable battery and ergonomics of the LG4 but apart from that the pixel 8a checks all the boxes as an ideal basic daily driver.
Getting today, .
Pixel 4 that glass back is falling off a bit.
I'm waiting for my battery to give up but it keeps going. I still Android 13..
I just hope they fix some of the icons and trying to back out of a page or go back to a page some of these things need analyst ......#_____----
You keep saying this phone has a flagship processor ? Seriously ? Tensor G3 is about the same performance as snapdragon 8gen1 ... I can just imagine the uproar if another company's top spec phone had a 2yr old processor released in it but because it's a pixel it gets a pass to appease the fans...
Yup, I've been seeing the hypocrisy for years now. Tech Reviewers had no problem trashing the Samsung made Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 but when it comes to Tensor🤐
Google pixels are so nice to use
the pixel buds pro sound horrible very muffled for vocals
It is criminally overpriced here in India. There are so many better options to choose from & the Pixel 8 is only a little more expensive than the 8a here. I don't know why anyone would buy the 8a instead of the 8.
It's an American product. You better be glad that it's available in your country. You can use it whatever you want without locked features.
Who cares about India? The rest of the world is so big
@@kylorokx1552yeah it's only the American companies who do this. OnePlus 12 an actual flagship phone is the same price as Pixel 8a a mid range phone in India. Indians should avoid overpriced American brands.
OnePlus 12R is much more favorably comparable in every aspect to the 8a... Including price!
Comparison? 😉
@@Pocketnow do it!
Just get the 8…it’s better, can be found cheaper now and good used available too.
Im stacked with 4 and i can't upgrade again. I wish someone gift this for me and I'll forever be indebted to that person
Google phones always go on special. The only reason the pixel 8 is a similar price is it came out earlier. Wait 6 months and google will be just about giving these away. In Australia I got one on a carrier deal for half price. Yes half price! $424 Aud. No phone comes remotely close for that price. I have a fold 5 but was changing carriers and this deal was too good to pass up.
Good compact
Gorilla Glass 3, Tensor and bezels right out of 2017 are why this is a hard pass.
I would love to see boxier phones with matte screens.
I wouldn’t.
@@davidjacobs6244 have fun this basic shit.
@@LeandroFTW get an S24 Ultra then, that should suit your needs
5:57 - Yes. Google's software update approach is so archaic. Samsung literally downloads 400MB to 2.5GB updates, restart, all within 2 - 6 minute's on average. I loathe the way "stock" Android does updates, it's inferior in comparison and to argue otherwise it's to be wilfully obtuse
In Bangladesh 8a & 8 cost the same.
These will sell like hotcakes. Especially the 256GB model only being slightly more expensive where bottom/mid range iPhones are nearly double the cost.
pixel phones in theory are great. In real world use......not so much. I've never had a phone get overheated at 70 degrees outside until now. Constantly freezing, glitching, battery drain. These phones are not worth a wooden nickel.
Nalla muttu kudu
Please we need the old logo back, I almost unsubbed I didn't recognize the channel.
Having to subscribe to PocketNow is disrespectful. I've already done this, why is Google doing this.
I'm loving the direction Google is going with their phones. The software and the new look is outstanding. #teampixel
Nope not even it's own native alarms...
Neither… it’s a sidekick lol
Shouldn't have changed the logo for the channel. Looks bad and cheap.
People said that about the previous one when it was first introduced, now they are complaining that it’s gone 🙄
So does your mom
Heyyyy...I just noticed the new logo....bruh....unless you guys have already committed and spent too much on the new branding, please bring back the old logo...better colors, better font.
Nope this is way better stop crying
The pixel 8 now in the UK costs £438 with free pixel buds and the S24 is £499. This phone makes no sense to buy.
Just trade in a IPhone 12 Pro Max + £112 for a Pixel 8a, I checked how much it would be for a Pixel 8 with the trade- in and it was £312, a £200 difference makes a lot of sense
i wonder who at google decided: lets make this display look like a f*ing 150 dollar motorola phone. i mean seriously no one can tell me that they save significant money by giving it those ridiculous bezels. thats just for mocking the costumer...
No one was creating that very strange dichotomy - but I guess you know how to do propaganda, so here it is - false dichotomies to support a corporate product like it's a moral good.
In my opinion, people complain too much about the 8a. Whether it’s the bezels which I don’t care about or the plastic matte back that I actually prefer. I look at it like the 8a is $200 less than the 8, and $500 less than the 8 Pro. When you look at it from that perspective, it makes sense to be Google’s cheaper base option. I do think Google should’ve priced it at $399 or $449 at the most to make it a better value. But even that isn’t a big deal because Google regularly puts their phones on sale. Wait a few months and you can likely pick it up for $399.
Nope garbage phone
My Note 10 Lite was about to die and I was paying 30 dollars a month on my temporary phone plan, so I switched to Google Fi for 20 dollars a month, and I received the Pixel 8A for free and 150 dollars discount on a Pixel 1. I could have bought the Pixel 8 instead and they would have given me 400 dollars off, but that would mean paying 300 dollars more than the 8A over 24 months ($12.5 a month) and if I consider my average data usage (1 Gb, with no data saving precautions) the total average bill would be $51 against $38.5. I'm too broke for that, but even that besides I don't feel paying more than 30% to get the Pixel would actually be worth it. And if I'd had to buy any other phone of the 8A's quality or higher on any other plan available, I'd be paying a lot more and wouldn't be able to get a smart watch with it. So, the Pixel 8A was made for me, someone who only wants the essentials done right and would never pay the flagship tax or rather for a flagship, period.
I dont know how reviewers consider the pixel 8 series a flagship when it so lacking in power like wtf it benchmarks like the iphone 11 which is 2019 phone 💀
256memory not enough. We need expandable memory
Pixel 6 pro is better😅
Samsung still better .. I hate those big tiles top
if it has what Google considers their flagship chip than it is indeed a flagship in 2024
Wrong
Not a bad price for its features 🤳
Did you forget the OnePlus 12R exists? $399 with my trade in of a cheap Walmart phone I had laying around.
Yes, because this is a propaganda video for a specific corporate product dressed up as good for you because you will "save money". If they didnt get paid by google, they are doing it wrong, but some people ARE religious about tech.
Just buy the actual Pixel 8 when it’s on one of its many sales for $50 more than this 8a. The End, and you’re welcome.
Indeed, this only makes sense if it goes on sale for $400 or less.
You have an 8?
Price will go down in a few months.
Yeah wait for this to be $300 or something
Google makes my skin crawl.

Just garbage
I will NEVER buy a Google phone. It's bad enough that we have to fight for our privacy with third party Android phones, why would anyone give in an pay for Google hardware as well?
Because they already know everything about us so why not
I don't know what world u live in but everything you do in life, everywhere you go produces data and that data is sold. That's life but if you want anything in life (in this case a phone) you have to pay bud
And yet you felt compelled to jump on a Google owned product to find a video about another Google owned product solely to complain that you would never buy a Google product 🙄
To be fair you have a UA-cam account, which is how you left this comment. I assume you also have a Gmail which is linked to this account. You use a smartphone, loaded with apps, and that keeps a record of all your activities with it. iPhones are not any better, you still share a lot of data (including personal data) and are forced to keep it on iCloud; don't forget Apple products also use Google services. So... 🤷♂?
No. I don't. These Google phones have ALWAYS been featureless garbage. Be it the normal iPixel or the a versions. Google can't make good hardware OR good software, even if their lives depended on it.
There are far better options in the competition. And many also don't pose the privacy threat to customers that Google does.
Do you own one to know if it is the garbage you say?
