The question was more phrased to why would you buy the 500 dollar one if the 700 dollar one usually goes on sale for 500-550. After taxes, you pay roughly the same price for both. My mom wanted me to get the Pixel 8A because it was 16.63 a month, but so was the 8 Pro.
It's great to see the value in Pixel 8A from a different perspective contrary to the common mindset. As upgrading often doesn't mean to get the most expensive one, but the one that best suits your needs. This review for sure will help many consumers make a more informed decision.
as a pixel 6 user, I actually like the camera bar bump, and sometimes wish it was a bit bigger. If you put your index finger below the bump, it's really nice for holding/maneuvering the phone one-handed
Linus still using Note 9, I am astonished to know that owner of such a large business corporation still rocks a 6 year old phone, with no security updates.
i mean I still rock a Galaxy S8....as long as the phone does what I need it to do no point in getting a new one. He doesn't game or anything on phone so the stuff he does use likely works fine.
@@hotaru25189 I am in favour of using your phone longer, but the problem is outdated security patch. Not that I see someone getting in trouble with using phone on old security update, but considering every tech UA-camr shouts on updates, it's good to see Linus behaving like a normal person does.
Bezels are mostly just bragging rights and dck measuring contest on spec sheet. For vast majority of the users, bezels are thin enough that they become a non issue after the first day living with the device.
to everyone here, just buy the Pixel 8 by october (when the Pixel 9 drops) the price will drop significantly, and you'll still be getting several years of updates
I feel like Google purposely designs the A series screen to have a bigger bezel for more differentiation for the regular models. There's no reason it should have bezels like a phone from 2015
if you've ever seen Samsung's midrangers (A54 in particular), they have similarly thick bezels. Not that it excuses it, but it's just how it is. We've been spoiled by flagships.
Well Pixel 8a has even bezels all around. 4a has a chin but little bit smaller bezels where there is no chin. Was considering upgrading but will treat myself to a pixel 9
@@someoneelse1550 My 2018 oneplus 6t cost me 500€ and has properly thin bezels. Making them thick is 90% surely just to male them uglier in comparison.
I think one of the reasons they have that bezel is because like Linus points out. Depending on how you hold your phone, that could legitimately be a make or break feature (especially on a phone where the default method for going back is swipe in from either side unlike on a Samsung where there's usually buttons on the bottom but even the Samsung a series phones do the same thing. So make of that what you will)

This is basically everything I actually want out of a full review. Honestly if I didn't see the channel I would have assumed it was a normal LTT video.
1. the price is different in different regions - in many countries, the Pixel 8 has not yet become cheaper and is worth as new 2. Pixel 8a is still new and support will be longer (many people use their phones for 8-10 years, not a year 3. it's smaller and that's cool
This phone was a good pic for me personally because they gave me an extra 100 bonus on the trade in price to my existing phone. The trade in if I were to look at buying any other was exactly $100 less. Basically they are running an additional $100 discount if you are upgrading from an old pixel. Not sure if the deal is still going on, but for $400 really for me was a no brainer.
I bought my Pixel 6a from my mom about a year ago. She had a horrible "official" Google silicon case on it. That thing morphed out of shape quick, was too sticky and thus was hard to put in or take out of my pocket and accumulated a lot of dirt. Bareback glass is just too slippery for me. I bought a real leather case and the texture is just perfect. Not slippery but also not sticky. Always feels great. (It's real leather glued on hard plastic so the shape doesn't change). Bought it from Bellroy. It's expensive at 50€, but for the object I interact with the most in my day-to-day life, for hopefully at least two to three more years, is worth it. Go leather case people.

I just bought a brand new 8a for 250 euros from Vodafone., arriving in 3 days. I'm upgrading from a oneplus 6 I got back in 2018. Excited to try it out.
@@spacetoast7783 How so? I've used Google Fi for years, my monthly bill is $25, right now $15/month as I'm on a promotion for buying the 7a. I love it.
Vodafone Portugal was offering the 8a for 215€ with membership points (you get 2 points for every euro spent on your account) at 215€ for a phone with an excellent camera and 7 years of updates you can't ask for better value
The bezels are awful. But the worst thing is the network connectivity. I have 2 bars currently on my 8a, while 5 bars on my s20 ultra.. both devices are 3 inches apart. There's no reason for such poor network connectivity. And then theres the audio.. its consistently off sync'd by a millisecond or more. I had a "play" with one of these in Store in the UK, yesterday. Glad I did. I was going to pre-order one as an "upgrade" to my Pixel 6a. I really didn't like the corners. They appear to "bulge" out, which doesn't do it for me. I'm planning on saving up for an 8, especially if they drop the price again!
I have the Pixel 8 as work phone since it was release and now I bought the Pixel 8a as a personal. I honestly love how it looks, the aloe green looks far better then the green Pixel 8. The A is is bigger, but still work great in hand. Camera performance is still very good. Honestly love it and hope it will work for me for the next 5 years. I can't remember when I was so excited to get a new phone. I also bought the genuine case for it, which I returned because the value for money wasnt there for me although the feel of silicone was great, I lacks the aluminium buttons like the genuine case for Pixel 8 has.
I like the new style of having several cameras to which the hosts look at, but I personally think you're overdoing it just a little bit. Gives it a less... Natural feeling? I'd keep it, but do it a little less frequently. Just my 2 cents :)
A side note maybe. But honestly Linus, Replacing the back glass on your old Samsung Note phone is really easy and not even that expensive. Just replace the glass and you can keep your beloved old phone another decade or how ever long you want to.

Got mine yesterday for only €319 (256gb version). For that price it's an absolute steal deal. Coming from a Xiaomi 10t pro and I must say the 8A is an upgrade! Sure the battery don't charge as fast as the Xiaomi, but I charged it from 0 to 100 in 90 minutes, and that's okay for me.
@OldasianguyYeah, people complained that they had errors in their videos and then didn't tell people about it (or just told people in a comment or video description), so now they've started voice-over-ing the incorrect information with TTS, both as a tongue-in-cheek kinda thing, and to make it obvious they are correcting an error.
As someone who used to work in the US Cellular company field, usually the Pixel A series was on promotion for upgrades and New Lines for $0/m for 36 months. Compared to the normal 8, it was a steal!
I hate camera bumps. I'd so much rather have the phone that thick all around. All my cases make the back flat but I've seen the pixel cases often keep the dumb bump.
I might be old fashioned, but I am hoping for Google to make again a small lightweight phone with a plastic or aluminium back (no glass) and an earphone jack like the pixel 4a! I think people would buy it like crazy as many are fed up with the big heavy phones!
The fact that google wouldn't include a cable in the box that covers the full capabilities of the device it's bundled with is insane... USB-C is such a nightmare on this front and there isn't a single brand that is even trying to make it right. They're all shoving in the cheapest least capable cable that's just sleeved nice. The only way to trust a cable will actually work for more than the most basic charging is getting an active lightning cable? Really???
I traded in my 3a for the 6a only because the trade in value was a mindblowing $350 so the price was basically $150. and let's be honest. $150 for a new phone is basically unheard of! I couldn't pass that up (but...that was two years ago, and since phones use lithium-ion batteries the battery life definitely leaves a lot to be desired. Oh Lord Google, please give us removable batteries. I BEG YOU!
Only thing that made me consider going from 6a to 8a was the 120hz screen. I want a buttery smooth phone screen soooo badly Unfortunately I can't use just that to justify to myself buying a whole new phone.
8:53 really? The cable in the box cannot reach full charging speed? First they remove the wall plug adapter and now this? Oneplus does charging better, i wish google would copy
Even Xiaomi does it better by giving you wall adapter and a cable even with the cheapest phones. Somo budget options even include 67 Watts chargers in the box. The big brands are just ridiculous at this point
For context, the base iPhone 15 is TODAY 750€, Pixel 8a is 550€ TODAY (same price as p8) and will drop soon in price. Samsung S24 is 650€. All these are 128gb models. And having 7 years of update for every device I've said, I still don't get people who buy iPhones that are not pro or max models at that double price...
I've got an 8a on the way, upgrading from my 4a that I've had for years. Google is currently offering the 8a for free if you sign up for Google Fi and stayed signed up for 2 years. So paid $500 for the phone and that $500 will come back via 24 monthly discounts on the phone bill totalling the phone cost.
As the most vocal majority, reviewers should give more praise to products that include a charger in the box so that manufacturers will use that as a competitive advantage
What do you need charger for ? If the phone can't do 66W at least , you really don't need a charger from the manufacturer bcs you probably already have one. And I have a lot of various chargers at home that can already do at least 60W ( 120W for my phone , 100W for my notebook , 60W multiport charging brick ) , i really don't need another one. That's the whole point of making all gadgets USB-C
I really don't like these robot voice inserts, they lower the quality of the videos drastically in my opinion. I mean the quality is good, but the insert make it feel like a rushed job
I've still got my Pixel 3 from 2018...the only issue is that the battery life drops pretty fast now when in use, especially watching videos, and the fingerprint sensor died a couple months ago. The charging port actually never worked from the day I bought it, and I haven't had any real issues with wireless charging. I think I'll be upgrading sooner than later though. I hope the 8 series lasts as long as my 3!
I have been an Android phone user for as long as I remember. One of the best phone experiences ever having right now is with my newly purchased Google pixel 8A. Google finally has done Android and a phone correctly and the user experience is truly beautiful.
18 Watts, welcome back to the stone age, I think the 30 (realistically 26 Watts) from my 5 year old OnePlus 7 Pro is slow and I desperately want 60+ Watt charging so this thing is maybe a contender for work, but nothing more. At this price I expect 80 Watt charging honestly.
Bought one sent it back for a replacement due to a grainy screen the replacement had the same issue so returned it and cancelled my contract will either keep my Redmi Note 13 Pro or grab the pixel 8a.
Okay... good job d-brand. I started skipping the commercial, but saw the stupid AI pin and thought "wait, where are they going with this?" and actually scrolled back. Worth it.
Just picked one of these up as i needed a new phone pretty quickly. I saw yalls review and decided to look into it. You just cant beat it for the price. Sure the others are better, but specifically for the price it is fantastic. My old phone was messing up and i rely on my phone for many things. Im liking it so far. Very snappy. I feel this is great example of a budget version of a flagship phone. Not filled with junky parts or the last model cpu. It does go to show that you dont have to break the bank or spend 1-2k on a phone. The 7 year support was also a major selling point on it for me
The general consensus with Android based phones is that they tend to drop in price very quickly after the first year, so the best time to get them is a year after or when they go on a discount/trade in offer, since those offers can be massive
At my country pixel 8 costs around 750 USD while 8a can be grabbed for as low as 380$ with buyback promo (you need to give them old phone, it doesn't even need to be fully operational, can be broken. One condition is that it must turn on without charger). What a steal
Well the main thing is that they release the phone with the final goal of it being the budget offering for the next series. So the 6a came out, ready as an end goal for when the 7 series released, at which point the line-up was 6a/7/7 Pro. Then the 7a came out and replaced it, with the end goal to be the budget option when the 8 series came out, with the line-up being 7a/8/8 Pro. They release it early just to get it out and start selling so there is a new budget phone out and keep relevant (people don't like to see phone models stay too long), but the purpose of the a series phones is not to compete with it's equivalent series line-up it's always ready for the next series. The final line-up later in the year will be 8a/9/9 Pro unless they change something big.

I did the tab for a 7 Pro, after being on an S20 FE 5G, and there's lots to love about going back to stock Android, though the slight dip in battery life is noticeable compared to my Samsung. Koodo was running a black friday promo for all of November of 2023, right as the 8 and 8 Pro were coming out, and discounting the 7 Pro considerably for the tab. I went for the 7 Pro with the $20 tab, and the 60 GB data usage cap for a discounted price of $55 and month (as existing customers get a 5 dollar discount on the advertised plan price). Previously, I had done the same with the S20 FE 5G, as the 2021 market had depleted quite a few of the flagships for stock at retailers near me.
Have been using a 3a since I got it in a sale a few months after launch, and love it. Got the 8a here in France with almost 200 € trade-in for the 3a, thanks to a bonus 150 € for any trade-in, which made the choice between the 8a and the non-discounted 8 a no-brainer.
This is great! Dbrand is still the sponsor but you're not covering the phone you're presenting with their skin. It was always frustrating. I'm sure I'm not the only person here who wants to actually see the device that's presented. You can have a second unit with a skin, a different device with a skin, or you can put on the skin at the end, as part of the add read. Basically, please, do anything you want/need for the sponsor partnership, excluding covering the "reviewed" device with it for all, or most of the video.
$60 for 128GB is not reasonable. It's just less crazy than Apple. 1Tb of TLC NAND flash costs about $7.75 at the moment. Note that the lowercase b for bit. It's actually 128GB. These are spot prices and they are quite high at the moment. Back in summer last year, prices were around $3. You can buy entire PCie Gen4 SSDs with DRAM cache at a lower per GB price the the current spot price. Im pretty sure Google can get a discount. But that's beside the point. Even at currently unusually high prices, it's almost a 8x markup.
Last year, I accidentally took a Pixel 7 into a swimming pool in my pocket. I was in the pool for 40 minutes. IP68 meant I was able to laugh at being such an idiot whilst wiping off my phone and moving on with life. It was a very nice to have, at the time.
a 3 amp rating shouldn't make that much of a difference considering that fastcharging in a lot of cases will boost the voltage as high as 9 to 12V. Without having confirmed the exact voltage, 9v would make the most sense in this case considering that would max out at 9V * 3A = 27watts, yes it would still limit power transfer, but not as significantly as you might think

the same argument for the 8a as Linus said too. when the 8 goes on sale the 8a will do the same for less. & its already kinda on sale with the trade in which bring it down to ur mentioned price.

If you put your index finger below the bump, it's really nice for holding/maneuvering the phone one-handed
feels good if you scratch too or if you wanna feel something lol
I bought a case which makes the bar bump thicker and it is nice
Linus still using Note 9, I am astonished to know that owner of such a large business corporation still rocks a 6 year old phone, with no security updates.
i mean I still rock a Galaxy S8....as long as the phone does what I need it to do no point in getting a new one. He doesn't game or anything on phone so the stuff he does use likely works fine.
Doesn't he also use an iPhone
His fold broke after he jumped in a pool.
@@hotaru25189 I am in favour of using your phone longer, but the problem is outdated security patch.
Not that I see someone getting in trouble with using phone on old security update, but considering every tech UA-camr shouts on updates, it's good to see Linus behaving like a normal person does.
@@jshklsn Yeah I know that, but still he was able to use Note 9 after using Z Fold 3 for almost 2 years.
The 3 amp cable thing makes no sense because 9V at 3A is 27 watts. If you mean the cable is only rated for 15W then that's a different story.
Pretty much all usb CtoC cables can do 3A at 5,9,12,15 and 20V, so unless he was using a USB AtoC cable I agree, this makes no sense
Bezels are mostly just bragging rights and dck measuring contest on spec sheet. For vast majority of the users, bezels are thin enough that they become a non issue after the first day living with the device.
A little extra bezel makes using the phone with a case easier, the case can wrap around without blocking edge gestures.

Got the 8a a couple days ago. Love it. And it actually fits in my hand.
how is going by now? heating? bugs?
I feel like Google purposely designs the A series screen to have a bigger bezel for more differentiation for the regular models. There's no reason it should have bezels like a phone from 2015
if you've ever seen Samsung's midrangers (A54 in particular), they have similarly thick bezels. Not that it excuses it, but it's just how it is. We've been spoiled by flagships.
Real Pixel 8a has thicker bezels than the 4a (according to gsmarena pixel 4a 83.3% screen to body ratio and 8a has 81.6%)
Well Pixel 8a has even bezels all around.

1. the price is different in different regions - in many countries, the Pixel 8 has not yet become cheaper and is worth as new
2. Pixel 8a is still new and support will be longer (many people use their phones for 8-10 years, not a year
3. it's smaller and that's cool

Are you still using 8a? Do you think it's better to buy 8a and save money instead of going for 8?
I like the new style of having several cameras to which the hosts look at, but I personally think you're overdoing it just a little bit. Gives it a less... Natural feeling? I'd keep it, but do it a little less frequently. Just my 2 cents :)
A side note maybe. But honestly Linus, Replacing the back glass on your old Samsung Note phone is really easy and not even that expensive. Just replace the glass and you can keep your beloved old phone another decade or how ever long you want to.

As the most vocal majority, reviewers should give more praise to products that include a charger in the box so that manufacturers will use that as a competitive advantage
What do you need charger for ? If the phone can't do 66W at least , you really don't need a charger from the manufacturer bcs you probably already have one.

Got the 8a here in France with almost 200 € trade-in for the 3a, thanks to a bonus 150 € for any trade-in, which made the choice between the 8a and the non-discounted 8 a no-brainer.

a 3 amp rating shouldn't make that much of a difference considering that fastcharging in a lot of cases will boost the voltage as high as 9 to 12V. Without having confirmed the exact voltage, 9v would make the most sense in this case considering that would max out at 9V * 3A = 27watts, yes it would still limit power transfer, but not as significantly as you might think
