When I visited Australia this year I found it very odd that I did not see or meet any indigenous Aboriginal people in Sydney. It saddens me that the original people of Australia are so invisible in their largest city. When I got to Darwin was the first time I encountered people of aboriginal descent and they were treated so poorly by the European Australians. Are Australians racist? That's a pretty broad question not easily answered but I heard many racist statements made by one of my tour guides there. I'd like to go back but I'd definitely have to do it differently with more of a focus on searching for the roots of Australia. I loved the beauty of Sydney but I feel that a lot of their social issues are covered up.

South Sudanese born and educated here in Australia. Overt racism is pretty uncommon but subtle racism is widespread. For example, racism is entrenched in the federal parliament. Many conservation politicians will disparage minorities to appeal to white Australia and advance their political careers. The media is very racist too; they will often run shows depicting minorities as criminals in order to appeal to white majority and thereby generate revenue through ads. Also, white police officers are never prosecuted for killing visible minorities such as Indigenous Australians and individuals of African descent. Trust me, we are the visible minorities so we know how they treat us. They have hung a generation of visible minorities. The day a white police officer is charged with killing a visible minority is the day I will believe this country is not racist. If it is not in the interest of the White majority then it will be covered up!!!! There is no justice here when it matters most.

Australia is a lot different now from when I was a kid. My father was italian-australian and my mum was australian born but of maori descent, I was raised mostly by my mum. I've often thought of myself as a person of colour, but it set me at odds with my father and his side of the family (my father used to refer to me and my siblings as half breeds, my parents divorced when I was young and I rarely spoke to my father growing up, didn't speak to him at all in the last decade of his life).
Racism was present a lot when I was a kid (1970's & 1980's) had to learn how to fight at a young age, didn't hang out a lot with white kids, mostly hung out with indigenous (noongar), maori and islander people. As time went on and decades went on, Racism became less present, now I rarely experience it. I get called "Wog" and the n-word occassionally (my skin is naturally dark), but that is from the unwashed bogans you meet every now and then, but very rare. Most people I encounter are good human beings, just getting through life, and think of racism as abhorent.

As a mixed cultured white Australian I think the majority of us know that the atrocities committed by our ancestors is a blight on Australian culture. I feel that we are very sorry for this past. Also, alot of Australians ancestors come from war torn countries. So this has been integrated into our national identity. Caring and being friendly to all, as we do not know what others have been through. We recognise that differences does not mean bad it means exploration and growth as a society. Everyone is a friend (mate) that are intitled to peace, safety and acceptance. Unless they try to fuck with our zen. Then we kick those fuckwits to kingdom come.

I live in Adelaide and my Japanese friend agrees with your sentiment. Most people work at night in healthcare. Because there's not a lot of black people who have buying power there's really no need to employ black people in public spaces. When I used to live in London I worked in clothing stores when I couldn't find a proper job, in Australia you feel like a dirty secret. English people are chilled and social life is so much better in Europe. There's no need for a black person here. At work people don't greet you even if you have worked with them for a year. But for me, money talks and have developed such thick skin on racism. Living with with white SAns has trained me quite well. "Because there's not a lot of black people who have buying power there's really no need to employ black people in public spaces". What on earth are you saying? The only criteria to employ someone is whether they can do the job or not, not how many of them there are in the community.

Australian's are not racist objectively. Australian's have a type of unique humour called self deprecating humour where they make fun of everyone including themselves and that can be confused with racism but it's intention is not to be racist. It's intention is to cut everyone down to their level, also known as "tall poppy syndrome" where no one is special, no one receives special treatment and everyone has flaws like them. People who don't understand that are likely to dismiss it as racism but it's not the case. Most Aussies also know what actual racism looks like and will condemn it immediately. If you see footage of racist Australian's on trains making fun of Asian people for example, average Australian's will call it out and condemn those who commit such acts. Australian's understand self deprecating humour but will not tolerate when someone tries to be overtly racist.

Or more appropriately, re-highlight the old culture, the indigenous culture. But we have many amazing communities here of many nationalities, we are evolving with their input as well. You will find many cities and towns will look different here. Generally Aussies both coloured and white are pretty beautiful people in their nature, easy going and friendly. I’m glad that you got to see a bit of that. We’re all very proud of the natural landscapes here and would happily show them to you. But yes we’re a bit culturally confused at this point in time. You need to go to the outter suburbs. You didn’t see any muslims in Sydney city because WE DONT LIVE THERE, it’s too expensive. I think you should be a little careful saying you didn't see any Aboriginal people in the cities. Indiginous identity in Australia isn't necessarily connected to skin colour and an indiginous person may look "white". Many indigenous people were taken from their families and raised in Anglo homes, and many indigenous groups were forced to have kids with Euro descent people to "lighten the line". It's a devastating history (and unfortunately this kind of thing is still happening in certain areas), but it does mean that a blonde hair blue eyed person could be Aboriginal also.

When you said you only met three black people in Australia, were they of black African descent or Aboriginal Australian? That is an important distinction and usually the most common variations on so-called 'black people' in Australia. You can find many black African people in Australia, but they're usually in concentrated areas such as suburbs with large African immigrant communities; South Sudanese being a particularly prominent one. The idea of 'black' in Australia is not so clean-cut because this could refer to either people of African descent or Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders, who are another Indigenous group of people in the islands above the pointy tip of Australia; they are of Melanesian descent.

Good video. I would agree that there is a smaller number of African descent people here, but to say it's not diverse is wrong. Australia is considered the most ethnically diverse country in the world.

Jermaine, you should start a travel service - you organise groups - you factor in your fee - and you lead the group.

If youre black and youre looking for a brother to give you the heads up on how youre going to be treated in a racist manner while traveling through a country that was founded on racism, genocide and colonization, maybe first be skeptical if the person is light skinned because white people show major favoritism to light skinned black people and they dont experience racism in nearly the same way as actually dark skinned black people. Also if hes talking about white people and he says "Im not trying to be racist" then obviously his mind isnt really hip to the geopolitical temperature regarding race because he doesn't understand that you cant ever be racist towards your oppressors in a world where your oppressors have absolute power and your peoples death toll is in the billions where as white people have experience no form of modern genocide under the hands of an oppressive black government. So good looks for this man Jermaine giving his light skined view on his skater boy experience in Australlia, but lets get a dark skinned Nigerian or Hatian up in here to give us the scoop on how theyre treated in while theyre in Australlia.

This is the vid you had to make, bro. You did what you needed to do and visit Aus, but...yeah. Here it is. Australia is a great country (specficially, Melbourne) BUT...yeah. It's kind of a racist country, bro. Aussies have problems with Asians, for example... I saw some of that shit when I was there years ago. And then there are the names of candy...

As an African/black person living in Australia i would say that racism is not upfront as it is in America, like you do get those comments or side eyes but overall its not as bad as it is in America
