Ok, saying as a person who lives in this city, that part of the city is currently under construction. The passway to the beach is also under construction, it's just being sold for some project. People usually go to beaches near 9-10 o'clock, so you can't see people at this early time. And there are some really good beaches, you just went to those between construction sites. My advice - do your research. I can go to any country, step to any suburb, to any construction site and say this is how the city looks. It's not true and the center of the city is really beautiful

I thought about going to Ukraine in 2002. The visa requirements were impossible. You had to have an invitation from a local resident or hotel, to get a visa. Also, no credit cards or cash machines. Further, they advised drivers to stay off of the roads at night, too dangerous.
    I thought, "Maybe not..."
    Clearly, things have improved.

The invitation plus evidence that you can financially sustain yourself during the visit as well some roots in your home country eg children, property to ensure you dont overstay your visa. Eastern Ukraine is COMPLETELY different than western Ukraine. The eastern part is heavily influenced by Russia & former USSR culture while the eastern part is influenced my Central European countries like Poland, Slovakia, & other of the west/NW/SW border regions. For example, Lviv has a huge Polish influence in culture & architecture since it was part of Poland until World War II. That region is where my great grandparents are from, & they were there when Polish was mainly spoken (but also Yiddish from the tons of European Jews that used to live there) & the Latin alphabet was still written.

That car looks like a Luxury LADA, typical to Eastern Europe. Looks very much the DATSUN 'limosine' my father had from 1979. My father passed 16 years ago but the car is still being used to this day These car models were built to last.

Thanks for exploring around the city, shore of Black Sea and that mall ( appears so different with none of the shops and fast food places we usually find that remind us of the US). Hope some fellow travelers or locals will fill in the blanks about the history here. Think the recent developments have occurred after the Soviet Union became Russia and Ukraine became independent. hmmm, let us know what you find out! Enjoying your adventure! we love you namaste

Yo, yo, yo Jermaine looking forward in the near future of purchasing an adventurous travel book from you. To partly answer your question ( you're probably joking), I think I would avoid areas of the feelings of creepiness or "the bad side of town" as you know for you are a long way from home. We The Believers of Jesus Christ have you in our prayers. ⚓
