I dealt with racism framed as "jokes" or as they would say "taking the piss" in Australia on a constant basis. Someone always had something to say about my looks or compare me to some stereotype from television. This was both in Uni as well as on the job. Before you say "You can't take a joke??", jokes about ones race are not funny if you're civilized. Australians as a whole had this immaturity when it came to race/nationalities. Reading most of the comments here let's me know it hasn't changed.
I've experienced the same things as an African American (with Caribbean background) in America. I remember a white latino guy employed at the same company I was (we never worked together) said something offensive about my natural hair to me. I told him I rather have my hair than dog's hair that gets headlice. He had no come back.

Thanks for sharing about what it's like for you in Australia. As an Asian, i have to admit that we do have an certain idea of what someone of African heritage is like. Thanks to Hollywood. Unfortunately, the little we know about Africans mostly has to do with what we used to see on TV or the movies. And I do apologise on behalf of them. What I have learned from living in Australia is that i get to learn about other cultures and enrich my own life. Please keep sharing your experiences so we can learn about how we can treat each other better.
Most of the people you see in Hollywood with dark skin are not African. They are Black Americans.
My first rascism experience was in UK. I ddnt know how to react. With time you learn how to deal with such kind of beings. Always know that you're more intelligent than anyone whose rascist.

America is by far the worst
I'm African & lived in aussie for several years & have travelled across Europe. I think aussie is the least racist - western country I know. You will have minimal racist encounters but there are there, especially with the less educated/ exposed citizens. But majority are warm & receptive. You have to develop a thick skin, have high self esteem & a solid support system, otherwise it's very easy to fall into depression. With the right mindset, you can overcome most challenges that'll you'll face. It's definitely better than living in the US or Canada.
And yes I can relate to your experiences of no one wanting to seat next to you on the bus :). On a few ocassions I had a certain bus driver who would jack the bus/engine when I boarded so that I would lose balance & fall whilst trying to get to my seat. I just shrugged it off & moved on. How one treats you doesn't reflect on you but them.

As a Caribbean who has spent most of my years in America while traveling. I can say I’ve never had an experience like she’s explaining ever in the US. People are use to seeing black people all over the country here!

I'm sure the white people are in the ownership position there, with regards to infrastructure, general wealth and government, so, in that sense, I thing that's why she referred to it as a "white" country, however, I don't thinks that Asians are suffering any systemic racism, in comparison to Black People.
We arent a white mans country. Havent been for years. We are what is born here. So many asians and indians are seen as aussie because they grew up here. Also understand we have assholes. I have 5 or 6 experiences with them a year. My sister in law is from Kenya. Every "racist" experience ive seen and heard her speak about is not racism but assholes. Our culture is very accepting of free expression. Class is much less here. But freedom comes at a price. Also we joke about race. Look up "wogarama". Or wog anything. Its a derogitory term for italian or greek or any other greasy country 😁. Its a culture with problems. All of this is found in all cultures. But try to see us as individuals. Not white people. Ask any non white that grew up here. They joke the same and understand and dont think we are racist. But it does exist. Just not every time you think it is.

So 4+ years and only a handful of such experiences, I'd say that's manageable, we just have to keep educating and correcting them until there's no longer such a thing as racism. This video is insightful, as usual, thanks!

I work with lots of africans. A lot of problems come from not understanding our culture. You need to know africans are new here. So we dont know you the same as you dont know me. Most people dont care. But some people are kunts and we just put up with it. I have problems maybe 5 times a year with a horrible kunt. It sucks. But its their problem. If you see this as "australians" amd not some individual kunt it will play on your mind. We had asian immigration in the 90s and now theyre australian. It just takes time. You live in another country for your kids. Its difficult to get through culture shock

Asians , particularly indians in Australia but not generalising, as some can be really good friends, they feel that they are better than Africans.. this is just from my personal experience.

Sometimes people stare because it's unusual for them to see a black woman from another country.
I've tried hard not to stare when I see them, but it's their poise and gorgeous colour that I find quite enchanting, also the dramatic garments of many colours that they sometimes wear, is most attractive to me. I think this could be quite common thinking among 'white' Australians like me.
Please try not to think of it as racist when we ask questions about where you come from, what you do, or cultural things relating to you and other people from various parts of Africa.
Asking questions, mostly shows that we are interested in knowing more.
I don't deny there is still racism in this country and only time and education will hopefully eventually rid us of most of it.

Whats your views on the Aborigines?
As a white man i have been treated like this in Kenya and Thailand. If youre unusual people will act unusually. Your kids will be true blue so keep fighting for your place. It will happen. Its just youre all still new to us. I didnt see an african here until i was 35. First time i saw an indian i was 12. It was weird for me too. Also please know that us and them is not helpful. Some people are crap. Some good. Same with every group. So please dont judge on our worst. Its not fair when we do it.

I don’t know the full context of people choosing not to sit beside you but as a male I will tend not to sit beside young women on public transport. I will tend to sit beside males or older people.
Your a very strong melanated human to discuss this sensitive topic. Some people are plain illiterate and choose to remain illiterate. I am unsure if their education in biology has any ideology of melanin. The lack of melanin on one's skin is actually risky and I'm happy we have it enough to share. Sorry for some persons illitracy

Very informative video. I'm a Black Professiona who is currently applying for a visa to work and live in Australia. My mentor has been encouraging me to move from Africa to Australia because of the opportunities(Mining) there.
I know no society is perfect, especially coming from an Apartheid system. I know and have experienced all types of racism and bad behavior. Having said that their are assholes in every corner of the globe.
So these videos are very helpful, I'm just thinking am I really ready to go through that again.
Growing up in South Africa just as Apartheid was ending, moving into a white neighborhood, going to white schools. All of that was/is normal to me.
The subtle, not in your face bigotry I can definitely relate to, but like you said you end up brushing it aside.

Trust me you can live in Australia, as a fellow SADC citizen who has Australian residence you'll totally be fine here it's not like USA, when the cops stop you it could be racial but not deadly and it's not even common.

As an Aussie bloke, some of the racism your speaking of can probably be put into a misogyny group. I have seen racism comments made in my workplaces and have always called them out. There has been some awful behaviour by mostly men, and some of it from our political leaders who should know better. We, can be quite blunt at times. Please dont tar all of us as racists, in my experience most are not. For myself I dont subscribe to "race", there is only the human race, we are all the same, some look a bit different and have different cultures, we are all worthy!

FYI Australia is land of indigenous black people. The white settlers moved in and took lands that belonged to the locals. I wonder why the indigenous people are discriminated.

There is a line where people forget work place is not a social club. If you were trying to make friends with him socially then he had every right to ignore you but now during working meetings and company events someone acts like you should not be part of the company??
I've experienced this from other races and my own. Yes you are right. Open racism is very rare.
Africa has not been portrayed as having a large Middle Class population in Australia and New Zealand. Therefore the older generations have only seen on the printed and TV media the reports on natural disasters, major political unrest, corruption and poverty.
These countries have never had an African population base until more recent decades, late 1970s and early 1980s was the start. There has been groups from African countries that have come over as refugees.
So the population that has arrived as middle class immigrants in the 1990s and 2000s is still very new.
Africans seem to previously chosen the USA, Canada and the former colonial powers of the U K. and France, Italy, Spain, Germany etc..
This is partly why TV and film do not have many people of African descent shown in various roles or advertising.
I'm afraid we have a number of low brow people. Why people don't understand Africa is a continent and not a country is beyond me when the education system covers this. They opted into ignorance. With white Australia, there is a lot of denial about racism as they tell themselves that other people are too sensitive. I would like to think this improving into the realm of rational thinking. And I agree that Australian tv is way too white.
I don't know where in Australia you live. I have noticed there are some stores in outer western suburbs of Sydney such as Penrith where there are hairdressers that cater to African hairstyles. And in St Mary's there is a clothing store for African style clothing ranges.

Regarding the bright clothing, I can't speak for everyone, but sometimes I'll see a beautiful bright outfit and spend moment admiring it and wondering if I could pull it off. It still rude and disconcerting to be stared at, but it would definitely be coming from a place of admiration in some, or many, cases. I'm curious as to how you find Australians dress. We do tend to be pretty lax in that department, and I've heard some culture shock expressed about that.

Your video makes it easy on me now....it wasn't all in my imagination!! And about the make up thing,Girl, I'm struggling big time!! I had this smooth skin when I came into Australia,but a month later developed pimples/acne which isn't going away😭. Help a sister here,what do U use to keep your skin looking smooth like that?? I'm glad the video helped 🙂. It definitely gets better. You'll adjust. My skin isn't perfect hun, I still experience acne every now and then. It's been a long and tedious journey. I had to do a lot of research and slowly built a routine that helps me. 'Beauty Within' is a channel on UA-cam I recommend. Their videos helped me ❤

As a white skinned aboriginal I will tell you that I judge ppl on if they are an asshole or if they are decent human beings…colour doesn’t come into ethe equation…being a decent person is what matters most I guess

The racism is indeed very subtle but oftentimes due to ignorance of what the global village is like.. some people have limited knowledge of the outside world.. the world beyond the western world,

In my experience working in hospitality for more than 2yrs here in Australia, white Aussie and aboriginals are so nice people, while in my country they will treat you like a servant… here in Australia you won’t feel like that…I’m Asian by the way.

Feet on seats on public transport is illegal and a fineable offence, people who use bags to deny a seat to other passengers is also very frowned upon and unacceptable behaviour.
The fact is that the majority of people through no fault of their own, just the accident of birth, are not very bright. You are obviously a professional woman. So some of it is ignorance rather than racism. Or it may well be sexism. Or just plain nasty people! I am boringly very white. When I worked in the West Indies I got a bit of racism particularly from women. I don’t give a monkeys about the colour of skin. However I am very interested in peoples’s experience of life in different countries. I have learnt in Australia to be careful about asking questions as some get offended. I suppose growing up in England we were exposed earlier to different nationalities.

I just can’t believe that this has to be discussion in the 21st Century. I mean, are you that ignorant in life to think “ALL” you see on t.v is the real facts of life 😂? I’m from the United States and I have yet to encounter racism while living abroad. BUT, if I do, I certainly and will always speak up for myself. Thanks for sharing your experiences. I am considering Australia. Also, I really hate the saying “thick skin.” To me that means to accept any and everything from others, and I will not. Not even from my own racial group.
I think you might be projecting racism onto some situations where it might not actually be there. There are many reasons someone might not want to talk to you. You can’t just assume a motive. There are many people that don’t have a filter in general and just blurt out something wacky to people of any race. They often don’t have nefarious intentions. They just don’t really think before they speak. Possibly you are right for both situations, but you could also be wrong. If you look for racism your confirmation bias will find it, even when it is not there. That’s not great for your mental health. If you go through life assuming the best and not the worst, you will be happier and it will make you more confident. And being confident you don’t need to care about what other people think. And everyone will be drawn to you. There are ignorant and stupid people everywhere in every country, although I would say Australia is probably one of the best countries to be. Don’t let the idiots ruin your day. There are so many other awesome people you can choose to hang around instead. You don’t need anyone’s validation.

Hi Abisola. Easy for me to say because I'm white, but I reckon the guy who said you look like Bob Marley was after your attention. Australians are usually rude to their friends. We were' £10 Poms in 1964 (I was 10), and Australians might call us Pommy bastards now and again, but my Dad loved Australians. Amongst men many terms of endearment are particularly rude and can sometimes be confused. U.K.

of course he doesnt want to talk to you, you were offended over nothing, didnt say anything waited five days and reported it to the manager and then confronted him. If you would have said something at the time it would have been sorted. Now he thinks you might take offense at anything he says and he doesnt want to get in trouble.
The guy who made the Bob Marley comment and the guy who said “I don’t want to talk to you” are two different colleagues at different points in her life. Go back and rewatch that part of the video.
