  • Matrix Mixers have been around for a long time and are a staple in installation sound, yet not often used in music production. A pity, since they offer amazing flexibility in routing that can be used to easily create exciting effect chains. Matrix Mixers also make it easy to create feedback patches, a technique used by many experimental musicians. In this video I show how they work on the example of the Erica Synths Matrix Mixer. They send me the unit, but they had no input on the video.

I've not heard of matrix mixers before - fascinating and I can see how it both makes complex systems easier to visually navigate and also create unexpected and unintended interactions with equipment. I loved the sound of the track that began at 9:35 - the interaction of the noise and tonal elements compressed together was beautiful.

Andy allow people to play with his pedals on twitch streams via MIDI... You can only imagine what people could do if they had way to controll his mixer!!! Feedback generally yields interesting, sometimes-musical results. There are so many ways to produce and to manipulate feedback, especially now with all the routing and programmability options available in music equipment and software, that it opens a whole new world of possibility that did not exist except in the most minimal forms before amplification and signal mixing. The 1960s enjoyed a huge expansion of awareness of the possible creative uses of feedback, and the decades since have slowly added depth and complexity to the available palate of feedback and feedback-related sounds.
Thank you for touching on this treasure chest of audio routing and recombination in this gear-introduction video.

Thank you. I’ve been looking at this Matrix Mixer for the past few weeks online trying to decide if I want to drop change on it to add to my studio, where my partner and I collaborate on a guitar, drum, vocals, keyboard and random outboard analog rack and pedal effects. I wasn’t sure if this was for us and more so for the synth crowd, but after watching this, I know now, this is just what I’ve been looking for. If we can use a pedal controller to setup preset patches on the matrix mixer to execute recallable complex effects routing with just a simple pedal stomp, then we are going to be able to be so much more creative. I might even try my hand at setting up some voltage changes with the keyboard to automate key and pitch changes. Tall order for an old dumb drummer. But I’m willing to give it a go. Thanks again.
