First off I love you. Second Tesla argued that all objects have a resonant frequency, including the Earth itself. Please keep pushing the low end. You seemed to back away from the lows. That is where your machines can explore reality itself.
*including human molecules. It's been proposed that the resonance of humanity is what dictated the different base patterns around the world, and is my theory why everyone picks up the blues and 4/4 time so easily...

I love the sounds you were able to get out of the Syntrx. It went from really dark and deep, to light and airy with just a few turns of a knob.
Love it as always Hainbach! A lot of fun can be had using the 4x high and low pass filters in Ableton's EQ Eight in combo with the Q control to create a sort of variable width and resonating bandpass filter. This can be placed in all different parts of the signal chain of sends and returns (inside the box and out). Used in combo with saturation, reverbs, delays, modulation effects, compression and feedback loops I've gotten lovely results.
I listened through this on a system with a Genelec 7360a subwoofer.
That bass feedback was something extra! :-)

one of my favorite things to do with feedback is to mix the output of a ladder filter back in with the input but delayed.
not like a delay with wet and dry mix, but in the sense of adding time to the extra feedback path. tweaking the delay time will cause it to howl and shriek, and sometimes the whole system becomes so excited and unstable that turning a knob and then turning it back will do something completely chaotic and it can take minutes for it to resume it's previous behaviour

I love this stuff... taking a simple basic sound, then routing sends back to tracks into busses into sends etc... a “simple” app that lets you play with this stuff on an iPad is called Moebius Lab.

Using the mixer as an instrument! Effects loops with your favorite filters and reverbs, and being able to pan them and bring them in and out. Reminiscent of Dub music and the way they used the studio to process sounds. Love it and the video where you visit his studio, brilliant nerd heaven! haha thanks Hainbach!
I love to have the original dry signal panned to one side and the effected signal on the other side, it creates such a beautiful stereo image and landscape for the sound.
also, feeding back the filter into itself and then using the eq on the aux channel to shape the feedback is very fun
Hmm. I have a 24 step rotary switch left over. That would make a nice stepped passive filter. I always get good ideas for things to build from you! Thanks!

@@leadtowill For the Bruel & Kjaer? Nope. But I think that 1613 uses inductors, which cost like $10 each, so it's probably cheaper to just buy a second hand 1613. :-)
I was just gonna use caps and resistors.
It is possible to use the primary winding of a mains transformer as an inductor, typically the inductance is in the range of 1 to 10

This is a great technique to create new sounds.I watched this video again the other day, several times. I tried to rebuild this using my equipment (filter, mixer, signal). I found some interesting new sounds, but i did not achieve to create this feedback-effect. I think my signal-chain is still some kind of faulty.
Unfortunately the video does not show the whole signal-chain (cables, connection-points, sources-filters-mixer). Maybe there will be a part two about this technique using a chorus or a phaser filter some day. This would be great.

Interesting seeing the electronics testing lab equipment used for acoustic projects. Interesting to see applications for use other than RF. Interesting the difference and combined frequencies as well as harmonics produced. Like you noted... interesting like not only bi-neural beats... other electrophysiological modalities I'm guessing resonating sympathetically with the generated signals effect beyond in general stimulation, depression and dissociation.

Low-Gain Electronics UTL-1/2’s are always available directly or via Schneider’s Laden, PatchPoint, Escape From Noise or Perfect Circuit Audio
Those are not particularly useful because that equipment rarely has banana connectors. But it is easy enough to mount a few jacks and bnc connectors to a panel to diy a passive format jumbler which can be used with measurement equipment. For a lot of the older stuff you'll need all sorts of el weirdo connectors so make sure to be on a lookout for cables to fit your equipment, and either diy a "el-weirdo to BNC" or straight to jack.

Yes! Feedback loop are magical! I tried it with reverb, delays and distortion, tremolos, flangers, etc but never filters. I thought the resonance parameter would have the same effect. I will check that out. Thank you Hainbach, those were beautiful sounds!

Love this. Your videos have been a great inspiration to get back into electronic music diy. Since starting to watch them I've built a passive Lowpass filter with resonance, a small mixer and I'm working on several ideas on various breadboards.
A lot of familiar chaos - 1984.. as soon as I borrowed a mixer with multiple aux sends my tape delay and effects got intertwined as never before! Now I make use of Reaktor, VCV rack and a few other software systems to enact my inspirations, whilst still having an analogue mixer or 6(!!) to work 'out of the box' too.
Aux send then back into mixer channel and aux send again is mind blowingly simple and clever.
Last time I got carried away with such a mastery of sound finesse was listening to Spiral from vangelis back in 1980 when I was 5 years old, and fell in love since with sound,. Your sound is so pure I can only say thank you so much, I clicked on oyur channel by accident and I'm so glad I did. Vielen dank.

Very interesting video. I have no hardware equivalent of what you show here, but a lot is possible in software, so I decided to fire up BitWig Studio, search for Resonator to see if I had any plugin in my DAW that could possibly do what happens here, and lo and behold, Resonator Bank does exactly this. Without this video I would not even know where it would be useful, and I would see it as a failed EQ plugin, but now I know better. Because of this video I understand how to use that specific filter and get exactly the same kind of sound as in this video. OMG, Shocked! Thank you so much.

@HAINBACH @marc runner I don't really get the hate for Behringer... Making technology accessible to the masses is something that I would qualify as good. They're not stealling the customers from the other companies, they're just allowing previously gate kept customers to enjoy low priced versions of expensive gear. Moog will still sell their products and probably to some customers that bought behringer as an entry point and whom would maybe never even tried it in the past. Maybe I'm missing some elements about this debate, if it is the case, please enlighten me.

@@IlmariLahti I just went to read about this. It seems to me like petty fight between the two parties.In my opinion neither is acting good in the debacle. Nevertheless, it doesn't makes the behringer products less good. I don't own any of their synths, but I'm not feeling offended by their clones (like said in my previous comment I don't think it hurts the original products nor their customers).
It’s really not about cloning, I don’t care about that. it’s about cyber bullying. Peter Kirn did his Job as journalist, Behringer spend months and lots of money on a bullying campaign, trademarking even Kirn’s name, because Herr Behringers ego was bruised. This is not ok in any way, the power balance between one guy and his blog and a multi-million dollar company is just not there. I was ready to boycott any event featuring Behringer, but Covid19 came so it was moot anyway.
@@Hainbach Ok I can understand this. From what I've read it seemed to me to be more of a joke, but I can get that it is dangerous to think that way when facing a bully. I think I did not see the extent of the bullying and looked at it like two sides throwing pikes at each other. Indeed there is quite an imbalance in the size of the two parties which makes it unfair. Could be also an option to use as aux one free channel of the mixer since it has an eq section, the routing could be aux out to channel X in , direct out from the channel to feed another channel in , in this way you basically have a filter with also a fadder and if you don't want the fadder to attenuate you can just use pfl

For people complaining about the prices of some of this gear, If you're Eurorack the Bastl Propust is tiny and sounds great. It's not adjustable, but you can get very similar results

BP filters are my favorite. They are great when used with overdrive/fuzz on all types of drums. I don't feel as if they get utilized, especially in n pedals, enough.

As send and return on the mixer are not pasiv. It’s a lot talk about passive.
The cheap way I did it was a Morley wah wah pedal on Synthesizer . Wich is a aktive bandpassfilter . . And works perfect in front of an analog delay pedal
Great video. When you put the B&K filters on the Juno synth I thought it started to sound like tape manipulation by the Radiophonic Workshop. I wonder if they used some of the same types of bandpass filters in their 1960s work. Delia Derbyshire’s music for The Dreams soundscape has a similarly resonant, haunting tonality.

And you cant achieve the same effect on your mobile with a DAW or on a computer?
Resonators and certain plugins yes but this will always sound more clean and way more fun to mess with.
You can do all of this 100% in the box (in your DAW). Send the signal you want to process to an Aux track. This is the track you're going to process with your bandpass or whatever effect you like. Direct the output of that track to a return and have another send on the Aux track that sends to itself. The level of this new send is going to control your feedback and resonance. Hope this helps!

i also love bpf ! i've been trying to DIY some passive ones like these to take my mind off things. anyone know if these ones switch between several different fixed freq RC filters rather than a continuous sweeping cutoff freq ?
