A Failed Instrument Turned Desired Ambient Synthesizer

- The Suzuki Portachord was the first in the family of Omnichords, teaching instruments that became beloved oddity instruments. David Bowie, Brian Eno, Depeche Mode and many more played these, usually slathered in effects to bring out their nature as wonderful texture and ambient instruments. The Portachord is the rarest of all of them, as it was quickly abandoned in favor of the more featured OM-27. In this video, I show you all its functions, demo how it was used, and make a track with it. I also touch upon other Omnichord variants, like the OM84 and the Folktek Mod.

Very nice! Noises is a plugin I can appreciate, adding extra texture in music is something I feel is all too often overlooked these days especially. On a side note, I have been seeking a Suzuki Portachord, ever since I saw this video of yours; to no avail sadly enough. Do you have any tipes Hainbach? Everywhere I have found one for sale online has been an old listing from nearly 10yrs ago or more & apparently was just never marked as sold or removed. I would greatly appreciate any help in locating one. Lastly, your videos are inspiring me, all the old-school instruments/synths you review are amazing! So much variety to envelop one's senses. ^ ~ ^
Something about a strummed synth is so gorgeous.
I've been looking at the JVC-KB-600 aka Lowery Micro Genie V 120 for their lo-fi, analogue string ensemble sounds but I recently noticed they have an input on the back labeled "guitar strummer" , now I am VERY intrigued. I have yet to find out what this is/was or could be. How cool would it be to have a omnichord-like input device for an analogue string synth?
And also as mentioned at 2:26
And there was the whole MIDI Strumming thing Oberheim did....
@@lo-firobotboy7112 had some close calls to a Micro Genie a couple of times. Never enough ammo in pocket to pull the trigger. Sadder tale os when I didn't have a fibe in pocket for a pss-270
@@darrelldourte9455 A tale as old as time... I've come across few "holy grail" instruments at exactly the moment when I can least afford them.
I’ve never felt “oh my.. I want this!” this much before. Perfect little beautiful machine.
This thing is straight up a Faster Than Light Soundtrack generator. I love it.
My favourite game game. Still need to unlock Crystal cruiser
@@Hainbach Ahh men of culture.
That OST is propably what got me into synths. Still cant get over these sweet arps.
The sound of an Omnichord has been a part of my life forever. My great grandfather played it for me on visits, and gave them to me after he died. I've made albums with it, I have a qchord and an om-27 within 3 feet of me right now. But I really doubt I'll ever have one of these with the collector market being what it is and that's a shame.
I dont even think it's collectors. It's assholes that just buy these to corner the market and sell them at a premium. Collector items belong into museums where professionals take care of them and preserve them for future generations. The rest of instruments belongs into the hands of people who are inspired and want to create music with it. But unfortunately, wherever there is money to be made, you'll find those primitives just wanting to make a buck.
You deserve one
I hate how they aren’t made anymore and there’s nothing like them. I want any of them bad and there are no alternative options either.
Suzuki is also the biggest manufacturer of Taishogoto instruments, which are more or less a japanese version of the autoharp. The Suiko shigin synthesizers (like your ST-50) were modeled after those Taishogotos.
Yeah, I have the Waraku I and III - ua-cam.com/video/oMNf04YkzAw/v-deo.html
They make a decent motorcycle too!…
@@alanshewitt -- They make nice little automobiles too. I drove a Suzuki Swift between 1992 and 1996 that often topped 40 MPG.
@@ConwayBob Do they make motorboats?
In 1980, my 8-year old self would sit for hours at my grandmother's Bontempi fan organ, almost solemnly meandering through the enchanted galaxy that allowed itself to be navigated through the magic of the chord buttons, understanding nothing of what I was doing or hearing, but somehow still knowing where I had been. If I'd had one of these machines, wrought by techno-sorcerers in some far-away dimension, I would have been on a constant galactic journey, and not ever have left my room.
I love this imagery
I read the last word as ‘moon’.
beautiful imagery
Okay
Deep
For being an analog synth "toy" from the 80's it sounds remarkably real. You really get the feeling of harp strings actually being strummed.
There's something about a toy synth with a little crap speaker being recorded on a nice professional microphone that just feels right!
Yup , you could start playing with it at 9pm , fire up a joint and you would still be ‘ creating away ‘ @4M 😎
Cool! I think it sounds better without effects honestly. Has a nice gritty lofi vibe to it.
I haven't been watching recently and "Hi I'm Hainbach and it's good to have you back" felt like a personal greeting.
My grandfather had one of these! I have always been looking for what it was since! Thank you for reminding me of him!!!
Everytime I see a new video and see the Legend of Zelda sticker ever on your wall, I imagine how absolutely epic a Legend of Zelda soundtrack made be Heinbach would be.
I'm convinced he could make beautiful music from a grilled cheese sandwich. Your ability to jump in and go with it is amazing to watch. Keep up the good work!
Wow when you play the chords at 4:15 it sounds very Robert Wyatt-ish! Such a cool little machine!
Those chords on the top sound like in 1992 breakbeat rave anthems... looking forward to hear its ambient side.
Just add ducking :-)
Seeing things like this really get me into wanting to try making music again. I haven't tried since my college days and this thing looks so fun to experiment with. :)
(Also, I love your cool shirt!)
I started making music in my 30s. I had always wanted to but never thought I could until I started watching stuff like Hainbach..... then I realised that there were far more ways of making music than I ever imagined!
I heard about Omnichord, but the Portachord was new to me. Lovely little thing, though...
Wow, what a beautiful intuitive little machine! It sounds great even without FX. Everybody should have one at home for a relaxing session of harmonic noodling.
It does actually sound good which surprised me. The strummer also gave me some ideas of how to use one of my euro modules. So thanks for the inspiration.
When you hit the minor and 7th buttons at the same time, my jaw dropped. I've used a similar instrument before but it never occurred to me to even try that! The versatility of such a lovely instrument with so simple an interface abounds
Surprisingly cool!
Thanks for sharing this strange beautiful musical instrument, with us.
Love the sweater you are wearing.
Have a wonderful day 🌻
I swear you have one of the most interesting synth channels I've ever run across. I bet you could make a piano strung with dental floss sound amazing.
it sounds so good! Just the design of the box of the tronichord is an 80s gem. If only there was a VST instrument available! Thanks for the great video ;)
Sounds wonderful, and the interface is perfect. Looks like a joy to play.
I LOVE THE OMNICHORD FAMILY. THEYRE ALL SO AMAZING
For me, there's always a liminal spaces/uncanny valley/Mandela effect sensation I get from watching Hainbach videos. Like, I swear I recognize these things from grandfather's music room or friend's church basement, but then he says that this instrument was only made for 5 weeks in some cold war era country that doesn't exist anymore and he's playing the only working one. So, either I've been privy to some of the rarest electronic instruments ever, or I'm a crazy person.
Suzuki needs to start producing their chord synths again. They would sell like crazy.
What a lovely sound
Serious Final Fantasy arpeggio vibes . Very cool, I'd like to have one.
I salvaged a chord keyboard from a Hammond S series, 7 chords by all 12 keys. Gorgeous bakelite post war stuff. I need to scan it to MIDI and have a strummer.
I totally wouldn’t have expected 1/4 inch output. Pretty kool.
27 is the first instrument I remember modifying. I still consider it one of the best instruments to experiment with. All the neighbors would come jam up in an attic studio and the omni was everyone's favorite, musician or not.
Wow, this thing sounds so beautiful! Is this the instrument at the beginning of Nik Kershaw/Georgio Moroder's Electric Dreams? I think so!
2:29 What is that beautiful glissando melody effect and how can I recreate it on a computer?
Music was something I always found interest listening to, yet I lacked interest in the creation of it. This channel has brought light to not only the creation of music, but to a whole new sector of creativity and adventure to explore.
Thanks Hainbach.
Mind wrapped in the beautiful warm arms of digital synthesis, also looks great
2:46 your tape machine is speechless from your performance
truly - it looks as beautiful as it sounds!
This reminds me of the Ominchord, I used to mess around with one in my studio back in the day.
every time i hear your intro i beg the universe to have you say “hi, i’m hainbach and it’s good to have you hain-back” but it never happens.
Great video. Kept waiting for you to run it through that Mobenthey rack ❤️
I just discovered your channel and it is just perfect
Hainbach my man!
greetz from Holland
I'd love to run one of these through my Synthrotek Dev Delay kit. Once you get that little 2399 chip up above 300ms or so it becomes increasingly dirty, noisy and glitchy. Up near 1 second of delay it becomes otherworldly. 👍
It's such a beautiful 80's sound....
It sounds beautiful!
'My precious. Let me stroke you.'
Beautiful sounds and interface.
Wish I could get my hands on one. Seems fun!
I wish more instruments had chord buttons like this.
This is beautiful ! Loved the sounds ! 🌊🌊🌊
The design and sound are very nice!
Looks so good - Even with no sound a powerful ambient machine 👍😊
sweet Sounds ❤️ very nice 🍀
I’m in love with this instrument and with your channel
I wish they can still produce this type of instrument. People love retro things today! This would be a hit again.
Love the CandyCords
Ahhh ..I've got to find one...this is gorgeous
Hi. I'm Joscha and its good to have YOU back.
Crazy. I'm listening to ASMR frequently. I find it relaxing but i NEVER get any tingles. The sound of this little instrument, however, sends one pleasant shiver after another through my nerves.
I Love Music Technology And I've Watched A Bunch Of Your Videos , I Just Had To Subscribe !
What a wonderful sound! It very much reminds me of the Le Strum by Jason Hotchkiss aka SixtyFourPixels!
This absolutely needs a reissue
C'mon Suzuki!
The thumbnail looks promising, can't wait!
It's just like an electric autoharp, cool.
1:56 is fantastic.
At 4:14 it sounds kind of like "Sharon Van Etten - Your Love Is Killing Me" for a bit. lol
that was beautiful, thank you. (and Noises is in my wishlist)
hi my name is moritz and its good to have u back hainbach
What a beautiful machine somewhat reminiscent of an electronic omnichord...
Sounds cool!!! Looks like something that would be fun to play.
all i needed was the first damn seconds of the video and i felt like i just got re-awoken from my death to the very universes the mind created for me when i pledged full acceptance and loyalty to it. *ANYWAY I WANT ONE NOW!*
Immediately, I was like 'Check that sound out!' Quite an entertaining, unique and definitely Hainbach-ian instrument 😉
1:57 i would get this soley for that sound i wanna sample this and make a beat it sounds sooo fire
That seems ahead of its time
I want one so bad! It is very similar to my omnichord like you suggested but so much more ambient!
What a magnificent pullover!
kind of of a paired down Omnichord, eh? very cool.
Is that a full set of Mobenthey modules I spy? I had no idea you were a rhizome.
Beautiful demo as always! I now long for technology I never even knew existed
What an odd alien of a thing that sings so beautifully.
It's a fascinating gizmo.
This channel is amazing
I really love the sweater Hainbach is wearing
That looks like so much fun!
Sounds like BMSR's Twin Of My Self. Must have one!
Looks like an addicting instrument to play. The kind where you forget to press record.
What are the chords at 2:36 from? It rings a bell and sounds like something my parents used to listen to. Just can't think of the song name/artist
Do you know any modern models or instruments similar to the Portachord or Omnichord? I’m asking as a person who is enticed by how they look and sound but pushed away by the price
Suzuki still makes qchords.
Sounds like every jrpg for Nintendo all in one lol fantastic
really cool for 1980, nuts they sell for like $500 now! :O
I have three autoharps here, at least 60 or 70 years old. This reminds me heavily of them...but electric version.
Still trying to find a luthier or some expert to restore and restring my grandpas autoharps...
That would sound really rad with the Microcosm...
That 0:27 chord is straight out of a Röyksopp song!
any video with the acid rainbow jumper is worth a watch
Sounds fantastic.
This predates my omnichord OM-27? damn. It's in great shape!
mentioning depeche mode... any idea in which songs it was employed? listening to the instrument itself is like 'yeah, depeche mode... of course this sounds familiar' but i couldn't come up with a specific song right now.
Confirmed is use in “Wrong”
@@Hainbach will pull that 12" up tomorrow for closer inspection, i guess.
damn that sound on 1:45 sounds like stone in focus
Now i know how they made the TED Talk theme
I need to dig out my omnichord. I miss those tones.
This Is SO GOOD for making "pixel games" tracks like undertale, or something
Hainbach du machst zu feine sachen. danke dafür^^
