There's even some really cool details like the custom icons for each world, it's all very impressive! Hope to see more stuff from you! Is it that crazy considering that Amber has made a six hour fully edited video looking at almost every season of Taskmaster? Amber has at this point proven her dedication to insanity
What I love about that first level in World 5 is that not only are all the multiple new mechanics tied to the theme of snow, but the background elements also interact with Mario, as in these trees that drop snow on him. Same goes for the deeper snow that hinders your movement, which is a specific ground tile with a distinct function. It makes the level feel more alive if these background and foreground elements aren't just for visual variety but actually do something, it's neat.
My god, this video is edited so well, and it's a very enjoyable watch for three hours. This will definitely be going in my "bingewatch a couple times in the next week and come back to it a year later" playlist. I personally think the New series is fun, but a bit... samey and basic. Wii is my favorite, and I have a bunch of nostalgia for it, and even DS. But Mario Bros. Wonder blows all New titles, even other 2D Marios, out of the water. It's become my favorite 2D Mario, and I hope to see some sort ranking like this from you!
AMBERRERRRR I'm not even close to done with the video yet but I've loved it so far and I can seriously see how much effort you've put into it here. You deserve the world and I'm rooting for this video to reach everyone because it just needs to be watched. Genuinely entertaining and you've made me laugh a lot and shown me a lot more about these games than I ever knew :)
my headcannon when i was a kid for world 6 ds, was you start with a rocky climb before reaching a small rainshadow environemtn in a desert, before crossing the rainshadow into the wetland and jungle, before returning to the mountain and reaching the icy peak before battling the tank mole at the summit, then jumping either into the clouds or rolling down the mountain to world 8
They could’ve made the tilesets better, but I can see the vision. Quicksand? Maybe, but I could see a mudslide or mud fitting better. A beach? Maybe, but again, a lake fits more. The forest and ice make enough sense though.

I have always had the same theory about DS World 6, definitely feels like a depository for leftover levels with how it reuses old themes and has 2 towers. Although I dont think it's a bad thing since rock has always been a pretty lackluster theme to me.

1:55:25 actually, I don't think the theme is entirely out of place. I think it's supposed to be volcanic ash that's falling from the sky. It's actually a very underused theme in games, only Pokémon RSE and ORAS, and the Basalt Nether biome in Minecraft come to my mind when I think about this trope.
i definitely worded that part a bit badly. what i meant was moreso that the level probably would've fit better in an earlier world due to how mellow it was, and if the theme was changed away from 'volcanic ash' and such, then it wouldn't be out of place at all
@@amber_okaythen yeah, it did feel a bit too "lax". That denim colored background does NOT mesh well with what they're trying to set us up for in that level.

It is one of the more high-quality NSMB series analytical videos. The editing and format look phenomenal. Logics are sound without over-generalizing, much so going deep into individual levels and their strength and weaknesses instead of mindless, opinioned ranting. It also comes very lighthearted with a sense of humor, even putting the perspective of the player/designer and offering alternatives. Rarely do those other analyses offer similar viewpoints and conclusions. Playing the games back-to-back develops such a bias to expect a lot more during a time of stableness, the result could be different if they are played out of order, looking back then. Very underrated video with few views. It is long but filled with enjoyable content. Sets an example of what other analytical videos should be. Great work!
Got some things to say about the nsmb series myself world 6 in nsmbds was originally gonna be a mechanical/machine world which explains the inconsistent theming. theres 4 levels in nsmbds that has naturally spawning mega mushrooms, 1-1, 1-2, the wiggler level on world 4 & that one bomb level in world 7. some of the bosses actually change up when your using both the mini mushroom & mega mushroom in the original nsmb, go fight the mega goomba as mini mario/luigi as an example. Theres a few cheat codes / secrets in nsmbds, & other nsmb games. a reason on why the nsmb series is easier compared to classic mario that most levels give a desired item at the start of most stages in the series like a flying powerup for a higher level or a flower powerup for a castle level. This actually makes the item storage system of every nsmb game redundant if you ask me. Nsmbds doesn’t really have this issue due to the pink ? Blocks/over world hammer bros giving you random items & the 3 items introduced in nsmbds appearing as often as stars. Still wished they did the trend of introducing new bosses like in nsmbds for the other 3 nsmb games. a way to do coin battle, if you have the time is to do it as a minimum coin challenge against your friends. In order to win a round you need to have the least amount of coins. (The way to break a tie is simple, see who has less lives.) however getting the most coins isn’t the only way you can lose, you can also lose if you lose all your lives which is what makes the tie breaker have a risk/reward aspect. I’m surprised they didn’t bring back any of the powerups from wii in nsmb2, since nsmbwii brought back the mini mushroom. Imagine they bring back the ice flower. Good shit, Amber. I’ve yet to actually sit down and watch the whole thing but once time frees up believe me- I will. I enjoy arguing with incorrect opinions far too much to let this pass 💪🏼🔥
I was thinking about World 6 in the DS game. I wonder if the reason so many of the levels are off-themed is to give a retrospective of the past Worlds before going to World 8. This would be due to World seven not being automatically available.
52:30 That music is from Mario Kart Wii’s “Dry Dry Ruins”. It can be a bit confusing though since Double Dash has a track called “Dry Dry Desert” with a similar theme but drastically different obstacles and music.
A video like this will last me a few days. This is a great idea, because you can really highlight what is (or isn’t) different between each game and find the diamonds in the rough. I’m looking forward to working my way through this video for a while!
Great video! I really do feel the NSMB series does get a bad rap, as none of the games are bad at all, even my least favorite of them all, NSMB2, is at worst, forgettable and unoriginal, but not bad. Also, side note, Unagi, as of Super Mario Odyssey, have been renamed to Maw-Rays.
As someone whose first game they ever owned was the original NSMB, this video was an absolute *treat* to watch. Incredible stuff, with really great editing and effects, and I wholly agree with the thesis at the end. Nintendo played things safe during the DS/Wii era, and when things went south for them with the Wii U, they didn't really experiment nearly as much with their big franchises, almost like biding their time for their next big console. NSMB2 aside, the 3DS is generally praised for breaking from that sort of plain, unoriginal slump, and I'm hopeful that this means good things for Nintendo, Mario, and the rest of Nintendo's catalogue of fun, inventive franchises. Some stray thoughts I had while watching: - This video did a pretty great job of illustrating your fair point: while these derivative levels are almost never bad, they're seldom *great*, and the repetition even with good, reused mechanics are still properly called out as "last seen in NSMBWTF in World Number-#". It makes me think of how very few other games really do this, and so close to each other in terms of release; the closest I can think of is the Shovel Knight games, having elements unique to each level that reappear with each campaign, each released 2 years apart at most. But even then, each character's controls are so wildly different, you interact with everything in totally unique ways; a simple airborne enemy for one character would have serious consequences to take out the same way as another character, from different ways of attacking or moving. We only really see this with NSLU, and even then, rarely does Luigi's slippery boots create a massive difference in kind for the repeating mechanics. - Your point about the wider screen in the console games is exactly how I feel - it's the same reason for the jump from NES/GB games to the DS. More real estate, more mechanics and enemies to show at once, and when multiplayer is thrown in, it just makes sense; NSMB2's multiplayer feels really tacked on, after looking at it like that. - I was initially unsure why you didn't squeeze the Mushroom and Flower worlds in next to Worlds 2 and 4 in the NSMB2 section, like how you handled split paths in NSMB and NSMBU, but with the benefit of having seen how enjoyable those worlds are, I think it worked out for the best this way. This game is general was a lot less surprising than I thought it would be. - Seeing the editing and transitions in this video suddenly has me wanting to learn how to edit for myself - this is superbly well done! - I think my favorite parts of your humor and the tone in your voice is when you get to be snarky yet very clever; it's why I enjoy BALL so much, bouncing off of Quote's surprise and confusion, and a part of how you bounce off of other people in a group project. This video felt very different from both of those, and I'd say it was a pretty great success, seeing you handle such a thing directly to the audience and all on your own. - This is my first time seeing you and I don't think I've seen someone rock a leather jacket and bright green sunglasses this naturally
As I said before, I loved this video! I love how you made a retrospective of the entire series by going level by level and giving good criticisms and reviews of each! If you ever want to make a sequel-type video to this, I have a couple of suggestions: Ranking every world of the classic 2D Mario Games (SMB-SML2:6GC) Ranking every world in Super Mario 64 Ranking every world in Super Mario Sunshine Ranking every world in Super Mario Galaxy/Galaxy 2 Ranking every world in Super Mario 3D Land & 3D World Ranking every world in Super Mario Odyssey Ranking every world in Super Mario Bros. Wonder (For fun) Ranking every world in Super Princess Daisy (series of levels in Super Mario Maker, though with Nintendo discontinuing support for course world in a few months, you don’t have much time to do that unless someone’s remade the levels in Super Mario Maker 2) Overall, I really enjoyed all this! Can’t wait to see more!
I’ve always been interested by world 6 on the ds version, specifically because of the variety of themes. I know it’s pretty off putting to most but I actually kinda like the idea of combining themes. I know the game didn’t do much with that idea other than layering the backgrounds over eachother and the levels being slightly harder, and I also realize these levels were most likely just scrapped from being in their respective worlds for being too difficult, but if they had gone further with it it could’ve been a pretty cool idea. Like for example imagine a tropical themed level with a volcano and lava, or a forest with snow (kinda like 9-7 on the wii version) which would make more sense than say the underwater or jungle levels being in the mountains. I think one of the worlds was even meant to be tropical volcano themed at one point in the beta
wowow, youve got great editing, delightful commentary, AND it lasts 3 hours?? really awesome stuff! really enjoy the music selection throughout too, especially the touhou jumpscare
Honestly, NSMBWii is so amazing to look at and well produced. I still love the music to this day, especially the map themes, considering how fitting they all are to the theme of the world. Also, the world maps are fucking GORGEOUS? It blew 11 year old me away how 3D models could be used that well in a mostly 2D game! The world chooser always reminded me of cakes. Very nice to look at, as well.

Honestly, for World 6 the background and rocky tileset isn't even unique to this world, the Volcano setting in World 8 looks awfully similar, they just removed the lava on the tips of these peaks and tweaked the hue of the ground tiles...
ik you grew up on the 'new' series, but i'd love to see your world ranking of the original games (incl world e!) - even as a one-off tho, good vid, very well-paced
I unapologoetically love the NSMB series. I feel people overdramatise the levels of similarity and boredom between the games. Each has various distinctions and I wish the series was still going (they only made 4 games, the most recent of which came out in 2012). NSMB DS is the most unique and fun, but each of the games have great levels, enemies and fun little touches.
Great ranking! I like the way how it was approached, going level by level. I agree with most points, though 6-6 in the wii version is kinda underated. At least you're not forced to go on the raft. You can, as you said, swim in the water, or use the mini mushroom to run over the water. Also, 8-4's concept is shit, and it's execusion is even more shit. I guess it is a fair challenge for world 8, but still, it's shit. The WiiU version of this level was better, but not by much. Also, the motion controlled platform used in the red-hot elevator ride in NSMBU and that was before used in 7-tower in NSMBW was not as well utilised in the WiiU version as it was in the Wii version. The bullet bills were much more of a dynamic challenge than the WiiU version. Then I have to mension wolld 6 of NSMBDS. I do think the level selection in this world is better than world 3's. At least the world 6 levels were mostly fun, while world 3 was mostly ok or shit. The only levels I really liked were the tower and castles, but hey, I have a soft spot for spiky dildos. And finally, the world 8 final castle on the Wii was kinda underwhelming. Though the boss was amazing, the level itself was pretty boring. The other NSMB games did a much better job preparing you with the confrontation, with either the NSMBDS or NSMB2 version being my favourite. That said, you do make a lot of good points. Also, Quick question, have you ever played the games made by the Newer Team? I mean Newer Super Mario Bros Wii, Newer DS and the Newer Wii specials? If not, I definitely recomend them. They are fun. Sorry for the bad spelling, I am in a bit of a rush, but I wanted to write this comment down. Have a nice day, bye.
Cool! Do you think you will ever make video's on those games? And also, do you think you will make (ranking) videos on other games? I'm a huge sucker for ranking and review videos.

NSMB2 aside, the 3DS is generally praised for breaking from that sort of plain, unoriginal slump, and I'm hopeful that this means good things for Nintendo, Mario, and the rest of Nintendo's catalogue of fun, inventive franchises.
Some stray thoughts I had while watching:
- This video did a pretty great job of illustrating your fair point: while these derivative levels are almost never bad, they're seldom *great*, and the repetition even with good, reused mechanics are still properly called out as "last seen in NSMBWTF in World Number-#".
If you ever want to make a sequel-type video to this, I have a couple of suggestions:
Ranking every world of the classic 2D Mario Games (SMB-SML2:6GC)
Ranking every world in Super Mario 64
Ranking every world in Super Mario Sunshine
Ranking every world in Super Mario Galaxy/Galaxy 2
Ranking every world in Super Mario 3D Land & 3D World
Ranking every world in Super Mario Odyssey
Ranking every world in Super Mario Bros. Wonder
(For fun) Ranking every world in Super Princess Daisy (series of levels in Super Mario Maker, though with Nintendo discontinuing support for course world in a few months, you don’t have much time to do that unless someone’s remade the levels in Super Mario Maker 2)
Overall, I really enjoyed all this! Can’t wait to see more!
And I forgot to list among them:
Every world in New Super Luigi U ranked
Good video giving mostly in-depth reasons and great editing!
I appreciate putting the song titles in the video. It’s always so annoying trying to find them in the comments, thanks!
I really hope you follow up this with Wonder rankings cause man it will feel like such a breathe of fresh air after playing these games back to back

this was so nostalgic to watch!! great video, great critical reasoning with your reasonings behind the tier list. loved this video!!
damn how do you not have at least 100k subs yet? Let’s get this lady her play button! ^_^ subbed!
scuttlebug hrt
I can't wait for you to do a Mario Wonder! Heck I'd watch a tier list where you'd rank each level ;D
Fellow Huckit Crab enjoyer. Peak
Honestly, for World 6 the background and rocky tileset isn't even unique to this world, the Volcano setting in World 8 looks awfully similar, they just removed the lava on the tips of these peaks and tweaked the hue of the ground tiles...
Damn this video is great. Hope this video gets in more people’s feed
You make some amazing content!!
ik you grew up on the 'new' series, but i'd love to see your world ranking of the original games (incl world e!) - even as a one-off tho, good vid, very well-paced
Beloved and beloathed are my favourite antonym duo to use in succession
this is my ranking of each game from best to worst.
1: nsmbw.
2: nsmb ds.
3: nsmbu.
4: nsmb2.
A video on NSLU would be amazing. This video was so good. Definitely earned a sub.
just found your channel from this video and found you do taskmaster as well so theres my sub , im obsessed with it
This is such a great video! I'm so glad UA-cam recommended this to me, an easy subscribe for sure.
I’m so fucking excited to watch this
I unapologoetically love the NSMB series. I feel people overdramatise the levels of similarity and boredom between the games. Each has various distinctions and I wish the series was still going (they only made 4 games, the most recent of which came out in 2012). NSMB DS is the most unique and fun, but each of the games have great levels, enemies and fun little touches.
53:40 the only people who found this coin without help are Donkey Kong Country players
Incredible video, hope to see more 2D or 3D Mario Tier lists in the future
I have actually played both Newer Wii and DS, both were fantastic!
Cool! Do you think you will ever make video's on those games? And also, do you think you will make (ranking) videos on other games? I'm a huge sucker for ranking and review videos.
@@lukasvanpeski3369 I'm not sure if I'd make videos on those games specifically, but after the reception this video has gotten, I'm surely gonna be making more videos like this
i absolutely adored this grand video!! thanks for the incredible content ❤❤❤
Wow, that was an excellent video.
"balls can be troublesome" so true bestie ✊😔
I misread this as wholesome😭
I remember someone i watched who called super mario bros wii, New super mario bros fallout edition because of how empty it was
(im kinda suprised you didnt talk about iggy slapping his ass at mario since everyone else seems to talk about it)
Scott the Woz was the guy who called it NSMB WII fallout edition
Awesome video! You sure played a lot of NSMB for this!
girl you are stunning what the hell 😭😭
Great video this is the longest youtube video I ever watched and it was well worth my time
I'd love to see you take a shot at a LEVEL tier list at some point
52:04 was when I knew she's too funny to not sub to.
@@theStridingRebel It must be a devastatingly sad life to lead if you can't be kind to other people just out of the goodness of your heart, and will rather disrespect them and make them feel bad just because being a dick is so near and dear to you. And out of all places you choose to do it in UA-cam comments, literally the saddest place right after 4chan to have a debate in.
This video was really good
1:08:25 is my favorite level!
Wait how does this only have 1k views this need 1mil it feel like a 1 million view video
Awesome detailed video
The background music choices.... immaculate...
I found this at 2 am and I love it
i really have to Agree With you Amber about Bloopers in 2D Mario games. fuck them there so annoying.
awesome vid!
Love how she mentions that by the time she releases this video, Wonder already was released, but then said that while she's editing the video, she's probably playing Wonder. It seems she already saw that she wasn't actually going to release the video until the game released XD
I actually loved this video
Of all your content is liwk this ima sub
I just wanted to say that world 4 in new smb Wii is in fact A tier. No need to fret.
Oh man, this will be interesting. Will ypu do one for rom hacks?

The meteors in w8-1 in nsmbu actually look like bowsers fireballs so it could be bowser firing down at you
you should play newer super mario bros wii and rank the worlds (newer super mario bros is a fanmade version of the wii game and its so good)
I have actually played that hack before, as well as the DS version, buuut idk if I'd ever make a video on it
@@amber_okaythen well if your ever out of video ideas you can make one on that
