    1. watch the 4-min tutorial
    2. set your intentions for bullet journaling (make sure they're not outcome-focused)
    3. record your thoughts
    4. add what you need (categorisation, an index etc)
    5. focus on what matters

The concept of the bullet journal system has helped me so much. What I use would barely be recognized as a bullet journal, but I know what all the headers and icons mean, and it makes sense to me, and gets all the junk out of my head. Which is the most important part of the system to me, as someone with adhd.

That's my intention too, to get all the junk out of my head. But listening to this helped me recognise I have to limit how many pages I'm referring to at any one time, otherwise it feels overwhelming.

Not necessarily. You can watch a video on how but once you have grasped that you don't necessarily need more of that. Creative inspiration however can be more of an ongoing thing.
Also frequency of uploading, personality and how personal videos are play a role.

My bullet journal is my "external brain". Everything is in there. Therefore I don't have to spend time and mental energy on things that are not immediately urgent or needed. All I need to remember now is to keep my habit of flipping to the right page.

Thank you Ryder for sharing with the world the Bullet Journal system. I have used this system to help my son with Autism. He's become more organized, and takes pride in it. His book, his way! It has unleashed some impressive pages and some very long lists! He even has a "Things to tell Mom" list, so I'm not peppered with questions and observations all day long. It's helped him a lot, therefore it's helped me a lot. I'm so grateful. I wish you much success! Have a great day and stay safe.

Some people enjoy putting extra effort and creativity into little things in their life because it can be a great motivator for them. It's okay if that's not something you personally enjoy or like doing, but let's not bash on the people who do choose that method. Bullet journaling is supposed to be personal to you and your tastes. While we're all in this community to better ourselves and be more mindful, let's take the time to be mindful about the way we think about others. It's weird to put value judgements on people based on their aesthetics.

Damn, I wish I watched this when I first started bullet journaling back in 2019! I've abandoned many journals, but I'm excited to start building a new foundation with a simpler method. I didn't realize how much I was limiting my BuJo's potential (and thus my own) by treating it like a planner. I'm working a 12 step program (ACA) as well as therapy for childhood trauma, and I'm looking forward to incorporating my BuJo into my 12 step work, daily reflections, meditations, prayer, etc.
Thanks, Ryder Carroll, for sharing your profoundly simple yet revolutionary journaling method with me. It's made a hugely positive impact on my life and I'm delighted to "begin again" with your fundamentals in mind.

Why? Why not resolve this and become lighter in spirit? Either resolve to use your journal to have fun, or be brave and gift it to someone else, because just as we don't wear clothes that have been hanging in the closet for 6 months or more, we won't use a journal that's been in our backpack for two years unless we do it NOW. Don't let it, or or the perfectionist bujo's intimidate you. Take it out now and write your name big and bold. The rest will flow from that act alone. Otherwise, hand it over!

If you make a lot of videos I swear no other bullet journal creator can steels the spot, how you talk and how you want us to know why and how ? It’s just like the whole bullet journal community stop and take notes when you talk. I wish we can see more of your ideas about it. I’ve been into bujo for like 3 years, couldn’t keep up because of the overwhelming effect I got from social media but when I stopped and did it for my needs i found that my style is minimalist with mind maps and only weekly spreads no tracking ect because it didn’t work for me and I can set up a spread in 5 minutes every Sunday morning or Saturday... when I’m in the mood I do a little collages or croquis in the side of a page.
I just love the end bujo is not about perfection and again thank you for this creation because it’s a life saver, hope we see you soon ( sorry if I didn’t write well English is not my mother language )

Ryder's point at the end about how to handle people with perfect bullet journals is exactly what I needed to hear. Truth is, I never liked my handwriting and I never liked the aesthetic of any of my journals, so they've always been a sprawling mess with just one thought scribbled on each page.

  • @MrsArchiver

While it’s nice to see how people can create and make something their own... it’s always most important to go to the core, the root, the base of the original idea first.
I am now 20 days into using my BuJo and already know I have found planner peace. 🖤 I no longer have guilt of unused pre dated pages, guilt of “I have to back plan to fill my past pages because I spent so much on this planner and don’t want it to be wasted”, “I need a theme for this month, but not inspired”. Less stress is a winner in my book. 🖤

I’ve seen Bullet Journal examples for years. They are very artistic and pretty but not what I was looking for. (I thought). I wanted a “planner” that only had what I wanted to track. I wanted a way to compile my thoughts, make an effective to-do list and direct my inability to focus when Im overwhelmed. I recently saw your video on the actual Bullet Journal Method and its been life-changing! My life is about to be simplified and arranged into manageable snapshots. I’m really late to the party but so happy to be here now. What a relief.. thank you.

Great tips to help pair back bullet journaling to achieve its primary purpose. I really like the idea of mastering the core functions first, identifying what needs are missing, and then implementing useful tools. Maybe an idea for your next video could be common hang ups, barriers, or challenges and how to overcome them.

I really feel like he doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Its as if people follow the trends of the aesthetic of the artistic journaling creators but gloss over the simplicity and effectiveness for productivity. The aesthetically pleasing journals are awesome to look at but aren't usually practically for non artistic people. If you want to experiment that's great but don't let the aesthetics take away from the core value and functionality that this system offers.

Thank you Ryder for continuing to keep bullet journaling SIMPLE...just like you originally introduced it to be❣️ I was constantly getting sidetracked and discouraged by watching too many videos and reading lots of blogs about beautiful journals with all these ideas, trackers and designs I couldn’t possibly manage. I wasted abundant amounts of money on dotted journals, pens, colored markers, printouts, stencils and all kinds of ridiculous “tools” to bullet journal with. Then I got too overwhelmed and gave it up altogether. This year I decided to come back to it...but surprisingly (to ME)...even a minimalist bujo community overwhelming me. Then today...I found this video and it all came back to me...I just need (and want) simplicity and functionality...NOT complicated and pretty‼️

I have been trying to commit to a bullet journal for about 3 years now. But because of all the artsy productions you see on social media, it felt like such a daunting task. I truly felt the system would benefit me but I was so hesitant to start. I was afraid of ruining the paper or making a mess. Even after the minimalist spreads, even after the productivity videos. I'm finally ready to use this system and make it my own. To use it not only to handle my poor executive functioning as an autistic woman but to heal and learn to be my authentic self. A place to bounce my thoughts off of instead of voicing them outloud before I understand them myself.
I want to thank you Ryder, for your consistency and humble energy. Thank you for this system.

    Dear Ryder,
Thank you for yet again allowing me to come to my senses. I can not tell you how many times I get lost and end up busy being busy by doing things that are not aligned with what I want to accomplish. But always after reading or listening to your words I almost immediately find my way back home. It happened when I read your article about lighthouses and now after watching this video. Reclaiming the fundamentals is such a difficult task, since the perception of fundamentals is completely deluded. The basics are far too often viewed as trivial and mostly skipped, but without them no matter what you build will be very quick destroyed, the next time when the unexpected happens. It is just like the biomechanics in running: most people do not pay attention to them, because running is not perceived as a skill like dancing or martial arts, etc. But without proper biomechanics sustainable progression is not possible.
Before I get lost here, thank you for reminding me about the biomechanics😉. And by the way, your german pronunciation is exquisite.
    Greetings from Vienna, Janette

Bullet Journaling has helped me stay on task with what NEEDS to be done in my life, but yet I limited the NEEDS so I can slip a WANT in there from time to time or to work on other tasks that have been neglected. I have been much more productive. I am one who made tons of todo lists, now I keep lists for my daily tasks and also keep an ongoing list of tasks that are longer tasks/goals to complete. My goal is to work on completing the daily tasks while touching on long term tasks or goals which help me to eventually complete over a period of time. I found what works for me and am loving it. It is my journal so if I feel like writing in colored pens, pencil, etc I can or if I feel like basic black/blue pen or just pencil then that is fine too. I have started adding a couple stickers and washi tape from time to time which helps me keep going since I have something visually appealing to look at. Thank you Ryder for coming up with this system, it really does work! This is my 4th year!

I was lucky enough to find your website before any of the trendier art Bujo videos. I had been unable to keep a planner all my life and wanted a way to organise my projects and appointments in a way that didn’t leave me staring at half a book of blank spaces or blindsided by suddenly finding an appointment I’d jotted down weeks ago, forgotten and was now unprepared for. Your system transformed my life, my daily routine and even the way I think.
I’m an illustrator but am only now incorporating art into my Bullet Journal because I prefer to keep them separate. But I’m enjoying both the art spreads and my simple pages, and I love how with your system I can jot down a whole week to view and then add art on the day if I feel like it. I also like how you support artistic and functional journalers together without the skirmishes that I sometimes see in the comments. Thank you for helping so many people!

I feel like I'm watching a movie or reading a book of my favorite genre....
An art with real story. Raw, honest, eye opening, meaningful, helpful....
I get stuck a lot in life, so I like guides. Whether it's a simple quote or a long, long fictional story with scattered truths.
This video is just like that: a guide. It contains so much sincerity and wisdom that I feel like I could do better in life now.
I didn't know that Bullet Journal is so much more philosophical and deep rather than just pretty-as the ones I encountered for the first time, and the ones that keep on popping out on the internet are always, always the pretty ones. I need it to be functional more than pretty-because to make BuJo prettily is an awful pressure for my perfectionist and artistic side-so I was sceptical about it at first.
But... I didn't expect it to be like this.
    I love this.
The concept. The video. The explanation and the way he explains.... Everything.
    Thank you.
I came here because BuJos on pinterest looks pretty; but I stay for the real purpose behind its creation.
Again, thank you very much. 🤧🙏💞

I've had tears in my eyes after your video. Thanks sooooo much for your kind, regardful words and the real comfortable way to speak. I'm not a native english speaker, sorry, so I do not know if my words can deliver my thoughts good. But maybe this helps:
I struggle with so much. So depressions are the most worst thing of that and are the reason for several other things. I was looking for a good way to combine beeing productive, because yes with motivation I have also a problem and with fokusing als, and found the BoJo method. That was on a Blog post and described very well. So I thought, cool I found a flexibel and perfect tool for me.
After that I looked for how-2-videos on UA-cam. All of them was so perfect! I tried to do as I saw it in these Videos. But realized very quick that I'm not qualified for those perfect designs. I felt useless and not qualified to work with a BoJo.
Also those creators who say that they have a simple BoJo had not a simple BoJo. And the most problem of all was the point that no one said so clear "it is not for perfection, it is for regardfulness of your own" as you.
I'm a perfectionist in a worst sense. So I stressed myself for weeks before I felt worse. Than I found a video from a young woman who made the first good video with which I could work. In the reference list on the left side of the video I found the video from WheezyWaiter with you in an interview and so now yours here.
So thanks a lot for your video 🌺

I’m curious how you set your intentions and how you remember to record your thoughts on them day-to-day. I often fall back into “planner” mode, but want my bullet journal to be how I slow down and simplify what I’m doing on a day-to-day basis to help manage my PTSD and narcolepsy. Essentially, I need to calm my nervous system, but the narcolepsy makes it easy for me to forgot that and go back to “planning” rather than living.

Thank you Ryder! Brilliantly stated - All of the other "pretty" and "artsy" sites are way too overwhelming for me and I would NEVER make a start! Guess what! I have started my Bullet Journal already and have been watching your excellent and mindful videos. You have created a wonderful resource :)

Dear Ryder, thank you so much for your video and your further explanations and reminders! I came exactly to the same process as you described but using totally different method: holistic time tracking. Yes, I track (with Clockify) 24/7 the duration I spent for each "what" (Project) e.g. 30' for breakfast, 45' to cook, 90' for errand incl. commute. Those three examples all belong to the same "why" (Client) eat. Getting through the same process you described at 4:11 I identified my real need and extracted "outdoor" from "sport" or "play time" from "friend (name of the person with whom I played)" or integrated "shopping" to "housekeeping". Originally my goal was to be more productive and during my journey, I figured out that I have first to better managed my free time activities, in order to become well-balanced and consequently ready to get the (not so enjoyable) things done! So I review (monthly) my "why" durations and set me an "hours amount traget" which I follow-up (weekly) during the next month. Thank to my method, I get free from "not-to-dos" and intentionally look to what really matters to me. Meanwhile I get so mindful, that I'm improving the "how" I do/perform my "what". This led my (among other) to mostly use the dictation function (>100WpM) over touch typing (~50WpM) or to schedule my cooking activities in order to best plan my provisions (best-before date before I cook but also my stocks as I cook for few days in advance). Let me know if you would like to learn more about. Best regards from Stuttgart, Germany

Thanks for redirecting to the intentions and personal goals and the beauty of BuJo's simplicity. When it gets out of its essence, things can get overly complicated and ironically mislead us from the intentions made in the first place.

I've been trying to figure out a setup for school in which I have tons of things I must prioritize and keep track of and it changes and is added to often, but its hard to glean ideas because most people are just making rigid and structured boxes for all the random things which is exactly what hasn't been working for me

Thank you so much for this. First time ever starting a bullet journal and was getting overwhelmed and caught up in the 'artistic' side rather than what I wanted it for in the first place. You've reminded me of keeping it simple and habitual. Then grow from there over time/see where it takes me...."we want to focus on the compounding effect of incremental change" - sooo helpful. Thank you.

When I first saw the word Bujo and saw the templetes of Fancy BuJo I thought It's too hard to setup and 'm not going to make mine ever. But when I saw the videos from creator and the minimalistic setup of Bujo then I realised how effective and powerful and minimalist it is. Specially the blog page. Which is bare minimum minimalist. :) 😊 I'm happy that I actually find out the real Bujo instead of Fancy one. ❤

Hi Ryder would be really interesting so see examples of using the bullet journal in conjunction with digital calendar like google calendar. I started using a planner this January that has undated monthly and weekly spreads (was trying to avoid creating these myself) and want incorporate bullet journal method into this whilst operating this in conjunction with my digital tools such as personal and work digital calendars. In so many ways my future log and scheduling is digital and I am currently getting used to having to duplicate my future log in the analog.

      Seconding this!
I'm about to start a journal, and I don't think I'll bother with weekly or monthly calendar-like spreads because I can always just check my online calendar. But maybe this approach is flawed?

I need to watch this daily! Particularly to repeatedly listen to number 5. After a few years of bullet journalling, becoming obsessed with stationery, stickers and changing my system every few weeks between notebooks, Filofaxes, TN's, discbound.... I need a reset and am trying to go back to basics. I'm completely overwhelmed. 5 is so important to me. Thank you :D

    Thanks Ryder. I needed this.
I kept and used a Bullet Journal for an age to help me become more productive and organized at work, but lockdown has shifted everything in my life.
I had given up on my journaling through this pandemic year, as it became less and less relevant, because, I think, I had failed to adapt my journaling to where I am now rather than where I was then. A journal that fails to match my needs and intentions is a useless task, busywork.
This video has encouraged me to go back to first princples, and I rather think that this could be a much more useful method now to achieve greater focus on my unexamined life than it was even as a productive tool. Here's hoping.
    You're a gent!

Thank you, Ryder! Your method is the best thing I discovered in 2019. First, I used it to manage my daughter's recovery process from the surgery. Then to organize my chores and meetings. Then to just leave some notes about what's important now. And now I'm back to planning again. The most awesome thing is - BuJo was absolutely useful for all these purposes😌

Ryder, thank you for this video. Post-pandemic, I find myself floundering to accomplish what I used to. Resuming a commute and in-office work schedules have challenged my work and personal life balance in a way I never expected. I'm constantly running out of time and feeling out of touch. I know there's a lot online and on social media, but I decided to come straight to the source and I'm happy I did! I like your calm demeanor and your attention to detail. The reasons behind what we do are invaluable to self-improvement. This video in particular has quelled much of my anxiety about where and how to start.
I do have a suggestion/ request. I am a bit of a paper addict, but I use mini-binders (5.5 in. x 8.5 in. paper) instead of notebooks. I just purchased the BuJo Edition 2 to begin my practice properly, but I would have purchased it faster and feel more confident about sustaining it if there were a binder paper option. I know there are a crazy amount of 3rd party resources and ideas but I would prefer to get them from the source and maybe there are others who feel like I do.
    Thank you again.

Thanks for making these videos love the last tip! I totally effED up my future log by starting with Jan when it’s OCT! 🤦‍♀️ but I feel proud of myself for not ripping the pages out I’m just gonna live with a bit of a scribble so I can remember when I start my second book 😝 hoping this will help me keep my thoughts organized, thanks again for coming up with this concept it seems very useful and I love the idea of the flexibility... which is exactly what I need! I can’t tell you how may daily calendars I’ve abandoned because I would always run out of space if I wanted to put a real idea down. ✌️🙏

Ryder, I'd like to thank you!
I think I've never been presented to an organization method in a simpler and more calming way.
Usually, thinking about having an agenda, or using a planner, for example, makes me really anxious. I struggle wit being organized and these methods always made it seem like an impossible task. I started to believe I was set for failure and, therefore, I wouldn't even begin.
However, you introduce BuJo with such a healthy and sober perspective that it makes me fell at ease. It takes all the pressure off of me and makes me really wanna try it. It made me feel like it's possible, but most importantly, it made me see that what really matters is trying, wether you succeed or not.
    Anyways, thanks again for this!
I can't wait to get started with this journey!
