- There is no doubt that Edward Norton is one of the most fearless actors in Hollywood. He has played some of the most provocative and polarizing characters in cinema history. Leave it to Norton to make a Neo-Nazi compelling in American History X and a sociopath provocative in Primal Fear.
After he played The Incredible Hulk in 2008, it would have seemed like a no-brainer to keep Norton along for the thrilling ride that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe film franchise today.
But the Marvel franchise has gone on to become one of the biggest film franchises in the world, while Norton was replaced by Mark Ruffalo. What is the real reason this talented actor was fired from the MCU?

I like the fact that Marvel fans are appreciating the fact that Edward did a good job. It's a known fact in the industry that he doesn't play well with others...he's not a joke like Mark's take on the character. Hulk is supposed to be menacing, not comical

Norton may have gotten little love from Marvel but he was the only live action Hulk to do his famous signature *thunderclap/gamma slap/whatever.* The other hulks simply failed to do this iconic move or was just written out.

Norton would have struggled with the commitment of multiple movies. He would have become more Loki than Loki. The core group of Avenger actors seem to have a bond and friendship that I don't see Norton really fitting into.

Tom Hiddleston is already mad about not being casted as Thor that he auditioned for, he's good enough as Loki. I find Norton to be omnious as Petyr Baelish.
He did an amazing job as the Hulk. I've rewatched The Incredible Hulk more than any other Marvel movie.
I loved Norton's iteration of the character. When he transformed you could tell why he was so constrained as he was very aggressive and a danger for anyone.
Ruffalo’s hulk as well, look at Age of Ultron when Tony has to fight Hulk to stop him from killing a city full of people or the airship scene in the first avengers movie. Tell me how that isn’t aggressive or scary to you.

I always found banner to be such a interesting and great character sometimes more than the hulk. Norton saw that too and it’s a shame he isn’t in the MCU anymore cause I personally liked his take on the Hulk character

It’s obvious the Russo’s didn’t want hulk to be one of the main focal points of the avengers. If Norton was in Avengers his character would probably over shine Roberts. Marks hulk had development but it was more for comedic or storyline purposes. Norton’s would have had deep psychological and twisted purposes.
That's why he was fired, the hulk isn't supposed to be a central part of the MCU, neither in the comics or movies

Norton doesn't know how to be "just an actor." He wants to be the writer, the director, the producer, the editor, and the star. he always tries to re-write the scripts, not just for himself, but for everyone. That is not the way a lot of companies work. It is what it is.
He has now learned that he is not quite yet Clint Eastwood or Mel Gibson.

I prefer Edward Nortons Bruce banner, mark ruffalo is pretty good with his version but Norton's version is very true to the hulks character and had great depth with his relationship with the Hulk.

Even though I was pissed about Norton getting booted from the MCU, I was okay with Ruffalo. That is, until Thor Ragnorak. In both that film and Infinity War, Ruffalo's performance was really goofy and I started to miss Norton again.
Well the blame really goes to the script writers and director for that. Thor Ragnarok was too comedic overall, still a good movie but I mean it was supposed to be a gritty movie because, well, it was Ragnarok, end of times for Asgard.
That's got nothing to do with the actor. If Norton was banner the script for Ragnarok will have still been the same
@@irishgob9576 So you're telling me that different actors with the same script can't perform it differently? Perhaps with Norton, Banner wouldn't have have come off as goofy. Perhaps he would've played into the lightheartedness of the films better. Ruffalo seems so out of his element in the character lately. He was better suited for the character, when he was being more serious. Norton seems to have a better range and seems to be able to play a full spectrum of characters from light to dark (comfortably), when looking at his work.

No, not really, especially when he is infamous for wanting most of the creative control on set. I think it also shows that he was able to make a hero like the hulk extremely serious, and did it so efficiently you actually wanted to believe in it, whereas where other movies try to do this it’s nowhere near as impressive as he did it. (Yes, Thor the dark world, I’m looking at you.)

I really loved Norton as Hulk. He gave meaning to Hulk story and the whole movie; His looks totally fit the character and really no one else would ever play the Hulk role as he did.
Norton killed it as the Hulk. He made his condition and struggle so naturally “hopeless”, and he perfectly reflected the image in the comics.
I LOVE Mark Ruffolo as a person, but I always thought he didn’t take over the role very well. I thought he can’t portray expressions very convincingly. And I also don’t think he’s too convincing of some kind of super genius, who also is some expert at fighting through his struggling years of survival when he was first infected.
I seriously wish the first guy was for willing to work with directors instead of being so difficult because his performance was kind of legendary.
And after I saw the Hulk in Endgame? it made me angry of what they did to the Hulk they made a mockery of its character

Ed Norton just works miles better with grounded characters, something closer to reality, and with the way things are going now with the MCU and Disney, he'd definitely cause quite a stir, he likes being in control of his character, which he excels at, and that would not sit well with Disney.

He is one of my Top 5 favorite actors of all time. who's to say if his difficult nature is resisting some of the hollyweird behind the screen politics and blackballing?? I applaud him for staying out of handcuffs which a lot of these actors don't know how to do as well as keeping his private life out of Harm's Way. Soooooo...................Robert Downey Jr. is allowed to basically ad lib his *ENTIRE* role as Tony Stark and that's peachy, but Norton wanted more creative control over his role , and they go apeshit. Norton was a *MUCH* better Banner than Ruffalo. Leagues and leagues better.
Its because Norton wanted and action/drama movie and Marvel wanted a action/comedy movie. A dark Hulk doesn't fit in the avengers.

But then again it was also the only time where I felt like the Hulk contributed something to the cast. In every other movie Ruffalo did nothing.

@@jadefire2817 dark character theme is far gone in MCU. They turned Thor to funny, people loved it. They turned Drax from savage killing machine to funny man with daddy jokes, people loved it. It's all comedy now, the jokes and chemistry amongs character is all that matter. All about the laugh. Even DC Comics follows this route, just look at Aquaman. Directors are now afraid to make dark theme because even if they made a good one, the income would still far behind a shitty comedic movie which could easily made from scripts to character developments.

I’m sorry but the Norton Hulk somehow looked too cartoonish to me. I prefer Ruffalo’s Hulk design as it looks less like shoddily done CG in the two previous Hulk films and it incorporates aspects of Mark’s facial features.
Caterpillow-pants the design and mannerisms are much better on Norton’s Hulk but of course Marks has better CG since technology keeps advancing
Norton is a great actor and I think The Incredible Hulk was fantastic!!!!!! It's one of my MOST favourite films. I don't care what Norton thinks about this movie. And I personally would be more satisfied if Norton was kept in MCU till now because of 2 reasons-
1) Changing actors like this ruins originality. I was VERY DISAPPOINTED to see a different actor for bruce in The Avengers.
2) I love Norton's hulk more. It was soooooo scary and badass looking!!!!!!
And yes. MCU also did 3 wrong things till this time. They are-
1) Firing Edward Norton.
2) Hardly allowing Joss Whedon to give particular scenes in AOU like the Hawkeye family scene.

Although both Rhodeys are good and both Bruce Banners are good, but still it's wrong. Changing actor ruined the originality of both characters. So Marvel did a total of 4 wrong things.

I still long to see the version of The Incredible Hulk that Edward Norton was referring to. Just watch the deleted scene between Bruce and Leonard, it's fantastically well-acted and would have worked so well in smoothing out the overall tone of the film. I still genuinely love the film (as it is) because of its fast pace, brilliantly-executed action sequences and a surprisingly great score from Craig Armstrong (especially during the final moments of the climatic battle). The Incredible Hulk is, in my eyes, the most underrated film in the MCU by a wide-margin, I still thoroughly enjoy watching it to this day (which is why I'd love to see the extended version that Norton has always referred to).

I agree this movie was definitely underrated. It's the only MCU movie I've watched like 10x. Great movie imho. But Norton seems to be like a difficult person to work with. No one wants to work with anyone like that. He should of been quiet and did his part because he would of made Avengers better... X amount of years later its another character for banner. If you watch all the movies chronologically it just look s awkward now. Kind of like having a really masterful painting and you have one line completely off. The whole painting becomes off

I'm actually happy he didn't stick around. Norton is a fantastic actor. One of the best, if you ask me, and it would've been phisically hurtful to see such an incredibly talented actor playing such goofy and dumb scenes such as the ones in Ragnarok and Infinity War. Don't get me wrong. Ruffalo is also a great actor as well, but it is easier to picture him doing goofy shit than Norton. Really dodged a bullet there.

You can't exactly have Hulk be OP and then still lose to Thanos. I think that even if it were Edward Norton or even Eric Bana, the Hulk would still have the same problems due to the current story arc.

Comical is the keyword. I can see why Ed's version wouldn't have worked with the Avengers and why critics today are now critical of ANYTHING DC releases. Because they have been used to the partly comedic presentation of the MCU.
Norton portrayed the best Hulk. I like Ruffalo, but Norton was by far better. It sucks they couldn't work out their differences.

It really is a shame, Norton was really good and believable as the hulk... he brought more to the human side than Ruffalo will ever be able to. As far as ranking, I grew up watching Ferrigno, so he will always take the number one spot for me... Norton, Bana and Ruffalo.

Ryan Oceana we do know - the studio wants to call the shots, not some actor hired for a role in a bigger universe who thinks he’s a knowitall. Marvel was right. We’re going on a decade and billions of dollars from the MCU now. If everyone got a say it would be a case of too many cooks in the kitchen and it wouldn’t have worked.

They probably just wanted more money for Robert so Norton was dismissed. I actually thought he did better. I don’t respect the hulk they have now. Such a clown. Rewatch the movies and lots of it is fill in. Captain America is probably the best scripted movies. The rest don’t embody what they should be.

The Incredible Hulk is always going to be one of my favorite hero movies and when he didn't return. I was disappointed as hell. If Marvel wanted to make the MCU more dark and serious. I would have preferred Norton but Ruffalo's a good goofy substitute and he's made the most of what he was to work with

They let Edward Norton go because of his creative differences? How does that jive with Marvel Studio's treatment of RDJ. RDJ routinely re-writes his lines. He even adlibs them during the shooting. He essentially got Ike Perlmutter fired over his role in Captain America: Civil War. He previewed the Avenger scripts.

That's because Tony Stark is RDJ, not the other way round, the original Ironman comic is not as "cool" as the MCU one... The exact opposite of the hulks situation... I'm not bashing Norton, I do prefer him and his version of hulk to the babyface hulk with the jokester banner

I guess you can say he became "uncool" in the post Civil War (the comic) era. I'm not sure about the direction, but they seem to focus on him being more authoritarian and less heroic. But, from conception through the 1990s, he was always cool.
Ike Perlmtter fired because he wants to cut the budget of civil war. Feige is having none of it and goes directly to Disney Studio top dog and they sided with Feige. Who wouldn't? Feige has a Midas touch.
As a huge Hulk fan, I loved The Incredible Hulk movie and long for a much deserved sequel. I loved Norton’s take on Bruce Banner and think he nailed the Bruce vs Hulk aspect and displaying a aftermath of transforming into the big green monster. I also think he created an air of danger when he was getting angry and made for an intense moment leading up to the transformation. Now I love Mark Ruffalo and his Hulk as well but Norton’s was more “intimidating and respectful”. Going forward they need to give Hulk a sequel to the 2008 film and really develop Mark’s Banner like Norton did with his and also re establish who tf Hulk is, the STRONGEST avenger!!!!! He is a force not a big dumb toddler

Tl;dr Norton is the kind of actor that really needs to get into his character and needs deep "lore" with good scripts to both enjoy acting and be successful.
Marvel however needs the quick backstory with barely any lore, comedy sketches, etc etc. In order to appeal to a larger audience.. a.k.a needed to simplify the characters/movie to get more money.

It's FUN! Heaven forbid we should have FUN at a movie about a giant green monster! You can do introspective and deep with this role, sure, but that's just not the tempo of the Avengers series of movies. I'll accept their popularity and mountains of money as proof that people just want to have fun at the theater. Go figure.

Norton is a fantastic actor. And I do think his Bruce Banner/Hulk portrayal was much better than Mark Ruffalo's. As others have stated, Norton's Hulk had more depth and bad-ass-ery to it. Ruffalo's Hulk is just comedic. And considering there weren't any Hulk sequels, and the character now just pops up in the Avengers' movies and the one Thor film, we hardly learn much about the character. He's just shows up. No backstory, no drama. He's almost detached from the franchise.
If Norton wasn't so difficult to work with, perhaps this could have turned out different. There are probably a couple sequels for the Hulk now. I do think had he reprised his role as the Hulk in the Avengers, he would have caused a lot of friction between the other actors and directors, and it would have made the environment extremely unpleasant, and the quality of the movies would have suffered.
If Norton stayed he wouldn't let Marvel ruin Hulk.

I can understand if you like the Norton Hulk to Ruffalo’s, perhaps it is based on seeing Nortons so acutely and Ruffalos extensively, but if you think this Hulk (2007) is better than Avengers, Ultron, and Ragnarok, then you’re high on crack. This CGI is atrocious. The scene where the Hulk and Ross are fighting in the college park is one of the dumbest and worst looking fights in the MCU.

With respect to others and their choice of Hulk, it's trivial comparing Ruffalo to Norton or any other Hulk for that matter. They were all different based on their method of acting as well as what the production companies wanted from them during their respective tenures.
