You can also add Leeann Rimes to that list. Her parents pilfered her money. A friend of mine was an investigator on that case. Her parents bought tons of real estate, and other luxuries. Once the case ended, she had to sell all the properties, and recover as much of the losses that her parents had pilfered. She also won emancipation from them as well. Sad.

An interesting fact about Jackie's role as Fester, He was talking to Charlie Chaplin one day, he was very upset about his work completely drying up and no matter how hard he tried he just couldn't get any work. Being that Charlie was so influential in Hollywood he went to the studios and demanded that they find a role for Jackie or Charlie would never work again for anyone in Hollywood. That's how Jackie got the role of Fester in the Addams Family.
You have to give the kid some credit. He played a damn good part in "The Kid". By far my favourite Chaplin film.

Coogan's Law was made because of him, The California Child Actors Bill. " The California Child Actor's Bill (also known as Coogan Act or Coogan Bill) is a law applicable to child performers, designed to safeguard a portion of their earnings for when they reach the age of majority, and protect them from exploitation and abuse.[1]
The original Bill was passed in 1939 by the State of California in response to the plight of Jackie Coogan, who earned millions of dollars as a successful child actor only to discover, upon reaching adulthood, that his mother and stepfather had spent almost all of his money. Since then, it has been revised a few times, most recently on December 7, 2019"

I literally just watched a documentary today about the mistreatment and abuse of the very first child stars in Hollywood, including Jackie Coogan, Jackie Cooper, Shirley Temple, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Paul Petersen, and Bobby Driscoll. All tragic and depressing endings.
Hollywood and show business has a dark past and as a kid I never would have imagined. I'm a 90s kid. I think of people like the Olsen twins, The two Corey's, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Amanda Bynes, and countless others who are groomed and sexually assaulted are left completely traumatized and ruined for life.
It's still going on, even though there have been old and new documentaries continuing to expose the dark side of fame.

The parents of the Olsen twins were marketing geniuses and invested their money making them incredibly wealthy. As adults they believe they're above everyone else. They don't give their former cast mates the time of day, or so it appears. Maybe they feel they were exploited as kids and just want to be left alone now. 🤷‍♀

@sirk425 - I read Shirley's book. And although her parents didn't actually STEAL from her, they did give to relatives that were in bad shape financially. Yes, she didn't have a GREAT DEAL of money after her "CHILDHOOD MOVIES," she still had the house that her money purchased and some money in the Bank. Shirley ended up marrying "WELL" after her first marriage. She was a Diplomat for Ghana. You should visit Shirley's grave. Actually, Mausoleum.

The car that they had the accident in, was Jackie's birthday present, which his father would not let him drive. The accident occurred on the way home from a hunting trip. The sole reason Jackie survived was because the huge sack of birds they'd bagged hunting was in the back seat, where it acted like an airbag and saved him from the full force of the collision! True.

He started making movies in the 20’s. Mid 30’s the depression hit. The parents took advantage of that. They probably groomed him to think he was doing the right thing for his family by providing for them. As a kid you trust your parents to know what’s best for everyone.
    Sadly that wasn’t the case.
I’m glad at least that he had a bit of a comeback with the Addams family.

This was truly fascinating. There was so much about Jackie Coogan that I did not know. Captain Sullenberger, the airline pilot who landed a jet in the Hudson River after the plane suffered a bird strike, was also a glider pilot. He flew them as a recreational hobby, but his skills came in handy in landing the aircraft whose engines had died. I just wonder what became of Jackie Coogan's parents; I don't know how they lived with themselves after rooking their own flesh and blood out of his entitlement.

  • @Theeporkchopxprezz

God bless Jackie Coogan because his experience was not for nothing. He is the reason why today kids actors. Their parents could only touch a certain percentage of their earnings and the rest goes into a trust just for the child star. Now look at the Harry Potter actors even the ones Modern Family they’re all wealthy now and joining what they made his kids. But I won’t take away from their parents, cause he probably had good parents as well that wanted to make sure that their kids would be secure financially for the rest of their lives.

    • @jamesrau100

Yes, California had to pass a special law, the California Child Actor's Bill in 1939 (a.k.a. the Coogan Act) that required at least 15% of the child actors' earners to be set aside (by the employer) in a trust. The law has been revised a few times since then, giving child actors a greater say in how their parents and/or guardians can spend their earnings.

Unfortunately they find ways around the Coogan law regularly. I know Jeanette McCurdy in her book said that her mom got around it by not properly completing the paperwork or something along those lines. Also as far as I know, (unless something has changed) kids filming reality tv in their homes aren’t required to have paperwork filed for the Coogan law. Jill Duggar talked about that and how her dad got around it and ripped all his kids off. She had to go the legal route to fight for a minimum wage settlement. I guess my point is that I see a whole lot of flaws in the Coogan law/act that definitely needs improvement. There shouldn’t be any loopholes to exploit. I guess at the end of the day, it’s better than nothing towards protecting kids in Hollywood financially

His mother should have paid everything back to Jackie except for maybe ten percent of his earnings for caring for family, and getting a house for the family. Disgusting! • @grnpeepers2683

Because 20 yo Jackie just found out when he filed the lawsuit, probably through the discovery, that the majority of the 4 mil had been spent by greedy pos's mom & step-daddy & all that remained was $250k period. They blew it all on themselves & their lifestyle. It was almost all gone by the time of the lawsuit. Step-daddy was an attorney tho, my guess they got a heads up about the lawsuit or bc of possible inquiries from Jackie about his money that Step-daddy funneled the money into offshore accts or Swiss bank accts.

He should have been given a more major role when acting on the Adam’s Family show. Till this day it’s puzzling why the scripts gave him just little bits and pieces in that show. And interestingly Sponsors never offered him a contract to promote their products, and there were no movie roles either. Was there something going on behind the scenes between Jackie and Hollywood the public wasn’t aware of?🤷🏼🙄🤔

Thanks for going to Forest Lawn Cemetery Lamont! Glad he was buried where a lot of movie people and camera crews, and other film industry people buried in. Forest Lawn famous cemetery for the wealth. Clark Gable and Carole Lombard buried inside Mausoleum and a few others too. Mr. Cogan, was abused as a child (not physically unlike other child stars) but his parents and then the shady lawyer. Mr. Cogan, has a better reward in our near future and so do all those buried in cemeteries, and where ever they died at.

    Hi Lamont, gr8 presentation.
I vaguely recall an NPR broadcast 15 yrs ago, or more abt a Northern California mob hanging. Some sort of notorious kidnap/murder & the town' ppl gathered up in mobs looking for the perpetrators, two twenty- something yr old white drifters. The mob caught up with the pair & basically hung them both.
The program' host mentioned JC had been pictured on the scaffolding along with the rest of the mob. He was maybe late teens/early 20s & in NorCal for school maybe.
My story may sound a lil convoluted & thin on details leading up to this actual historical event, since I heard it so long ago! Maybe something for possible future media content.
