This story is what nightmares are made of, poor little Sylvia Likens.
The sad truth is this was a time in our country where child abuse and child welfare was not really something anyone talked about, as it was considered a distasteful topic.
No one paid a high enough penalty for what they did to this girl, nor did any of them have a good enough reason why they went along with it, nor why they never told another adult to get help for Sylvia.
I hope each and every one of them had a horrible life, and met up with a worse fate in the afterlife.

Too often, abusive monsters like this woman whose name I won’t even mention, rule by intimidation. The vulnerable ones around them see what becomes of the victims at the receiving end of their rage, and they choose to align with the abuser at an attempt to stay safe. It happens in abusive families regularly and heaps guilt onto the survivors later. Intimidation and fear are disgustingly effective measures of control.

    • @cannpdx781
      @cannpdx781 Рік тому +14

@@elisabethhughes6005 although I agree with you, this was not the case here.
I've read the old court transcripts on this case( years ago there was a movie which prompted me to do more research)
at least 12 neighborhood children participated in this murder, going over to that house to torture this girl was just something you did before dinner and tv.
The oldest daughter was 17 and was pregnant, and she was a evil girl .
Hobbs age 11 a neighbor boy who became a major participant is suspected to have been sleeping with the mother Gertrude ( so along with being nuts she was also a pedophile apparently) Gertrude herself had 7 children, didn't work.
The family pastor visited twice, she told him horrible things about Sylvia and that she had hate in her heart for the girl.
They prayed together, he didn't tell the authorities, nor did he ask to see Sylvia The next door neighbors also personally saw Sylvia being beaten twice, they said nothing to no one.
Another neighbor saw her pushed down and stomped in the groin, she said nothing.
Sylvia's younger sister Jenny was able to contact their older sister who was married, but she just figured it was a lie.
Eventually she went to the house and Gertrude threatened to call the police, she did tell Social services, they went to the house and Gertrude told the case worker that Sylvia was a whore and had ran away, the care worker never went inside.
Another child DID TELL HER MOTHER, THAT SHE SAW THEM KICK SYLVIA HER MOM REPLIED, THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ARE BAD.
Countless adults, family members, neighborhood children, all saw and said nothing. There are no excuses.
Evil comes in all sizes and ages
Thankfully most of the neighborhood kid's who were put on trial? Died very young, they changed their names but couldn't escape their fate
Unfortunately many got away with not being charged.
Sylvia's younger sister died at 56.
There are no excuses for any of these people, and I'm glad they are dead and not using any of my air.

    • @cannpdx781
      @cannpdx781 Рік тому +6

      @@annethomer9569 100 % agree as would have I.
This case is a study in control and psychology of abuse.
The older sister did once wait outside and tried to talk to the youngest sister, but she screamed I CAN'T TALK TO YOU and ran away. ( this is when she called social services, but she also just went home. She didn't hang around at all ) Also the parents of the 2 girls had visited twice within a month and the girls said nothing, considering the abuse started with a week, why didn't they? Because they felt they had no value? Or because they felt that was no help for them? The school saw the bruises daily as Sylvia attended school until the last 2 or 3 weeks of her life, the Likens family had a total of 5 children, Sylvia had 2 younger brothers that were left with the grandparents, why not leave the girls there as well instead of with a COMPLETE STRANGER..why was Sylvia and Jenny just treated like spare baggage you dropped off, instead of their children? Why didn't the parents face charges of abandonment of their children? At this time it was not uncommon to have kids boarded out, or have kids as young as 12 working and not going to school, yes there was laws, but most of the time they were ignored depending on where you lived.
Also most of the abuse was sexual in nature, Sylvia was as a rule after being taken to the basement kept naked and most of the abuse was aimed at her private parts.
Unfortunately the fact is due to the so called moral structure at that time, you just minded your business, what went on in a person's home was private.
As far the control Gertrude had, the facts of this murder show that most of the abuse that actually caused Sylvia's death?
Was done by children, 3 of whom were once her friends. Much like how people followed the Nazi into doing evil things without question, this is how these children acted, following the orders given by a evil crazy woman, and often the children came up with new ways to torture Sylvia when Gertrude wasn't even in the room or aware of it. ( Not that she would have stopped it)
Her sister once said, she did nothing as she was afraid of if she did, the abuse would become worse.
Most videos on the horrible case never give the details as UA-cam most likely would pull the video or demonetize it.
It's my opinion there should be a monument to Sylvia Likens in this town, to honor her and all the names of EVERY SINGLE PERSON INVOLVED SHOULD BE ENGRAVED ON IT.
It doesn't matter if it was almost 70 years ago. The people of that town should never be allowed to forget.

I think every single one of the horrible abusers should have been given the death penalty, or had to serve life in prison with no chance of parole.
I was a victim of severe child abuse. Nothing was done or reported back when I was a child. After I was grown, I saw one of my Mother’s friends and she told me she never thought I would live to grow up, she thought Mother would kill me. She said all Mother’s friends used to talk about it and all thought I wouldn’t live to grow up. My question was, why didn’t someone do something?! They all remained silent, just talked about it among themselves….

    I remember this story
That poor girl, Silvia Likens... went through torture and murder at the hands of Gertrude and the other children there
When I heard about this story, I wept at how disgusting and evil, the way... that they treated her was.
They made her cut words like slut, into her own belly. Or Gertrude might have cut that word onto her stomach 😢😢😢
So sickening and evil, beyond comprehension

I saw nothing in Gertrude's eyes. Sadly, this woman an my stepmother would have gotten along great. My stepmother was abusive with me and was treated like an upper class member of society while I am treated like I am scum. Abuse victims always are because the abusers convince others that they are trash. I feel your anger in this. Thank you for sharing this. God Bless You & stay safe.

There are very few things that make me angry. There isn't much people can do to set me off but this would. If I caught someone abusing a child like this I would go mentally ballistic on that person. Plus things I can't say here. This abuse against a child is an evil that is unacceptable

If memory serves me right, Stephanie accepted a plea deal or acted as a witness during the trial. She wasn't a participant in the torture of Sylvia, but she didn't intervene to help her either. Stephanie ended up becoming a teacher.
Paula ended up getting a job as a teacher's aid in a special needs program at a high school. The school only found this out after an anonymous tip. The school fired her and later received received public outrage for not completing a background check.

From what I've heard, Paula was the ring leader. After she got patrolled, she did change her name. Some years ago she had some high end administration job. But someone fingered out who she really was and she did end up getting fired. But I agree with you, they all should have remained in jail.

The story always bothered me. The first learned about it 5 or 6 years ago. I have family who lived near there who are older and actually remembered details about this case. I used to always drop messages to my favorite UA-cam channels asking them to cover the story. There's more than what we've been told. I really appreciate you Lamont for covering it. I thought it was strange how the oldest boy died. They all got what was coming to them. I think her parents should have been held more responsible
