Hi Megan, your opening shots were like I was watching an epic western movie and loved the whistle, it was quite spine chilling, and what dreams are made of, then you find this idyllic pitch to set up camp, so beautiful. I think British Columbia is paradise on earth, and so enjoyed coming along with you and seeing your great country.

Love that epic drone shot on the cliff face! Seems we motorcyclists have all been on the pandemic related rediscovery plan of British Columbia. Though I'd love to see Covid in the rearview mirror for everyone's sake, I can say it's helped remind me of how amazing our Province is, and I've been able to do some old routes again, and found some fantastic new ones, and earmarked some for 2021! Good timing for this video, I'm in the middle of doing the same thing in my 4runner. I went up the gravel road beside Harrison Lake and came out at Nahatlatch on the Fraser river, then north up to lillooet. Then I headed up the back roads to explore churn creek and junction sheep range park yesterday. Got some great photos of bighorns. The footage reminded me of the trip with the Stanford ski club from Palo Alto in the Silicon Valley to Heavenly ski resort above lake Tahoe. The scenery of majestic mountain road with fast moving brooks along the sides are indelible in our memories. Four years ago, I moved back to the Silicon Valley from Minneapolis in early May. The spring flowers were in full bloom when I left Minneapolis. As I crossed the mountains in Wyoming , winter was still in full force with temperature near 0 degrees F and gale force cross wind shoved my car around on icy roads hanging by the cliff side. Due to poor visibility, I barely cleared the cars moving in the opposite direction. Frequently, the roads were closed due to safety concerns and the motorists were forced to stay in the roadside hotels for a day or two until the roads were cleared and the weather got better. The reward came as I approached toward lake Tahoe from the Nevada side. On a steep climb that was packed with cars moving in excess of 80 miles, I spotted two motor cyclists in black leathers on black motorcycles in the rear view mirror weaving in unison just like a ballet performance at high speed. From the experience, I would monitor the weather all along the road rather than the weather at the departure point before embarking on a multi days trip.

Flag-waving Kiwi here... I have said elsewhere, that NZ is a compact/'zip-file' version of Canada. You'll totally love it over here. No large forest wildlife (bear, deer caribou etc) to make anyone nervous about crossing paths with, no snakes or lyme disease carrying ticks or virus-laden mosquitos (oh we still have em, and mofo biter midges/sandflies down Fjordland way, but they won't incapacitate or kill you with their bites).
LOTR fun fact: 80% of the outdoor scenery is direct 'in-camera' with no compositing/CGI. I have a road-atlas that pinpoints all of the LOTR scenery, plus a complete scenery location guidebook. 'Hobbiton' is located less than 50km/30mi from where I live, with some of the finest motorcycling Waikato back-country paved roads all around to ride to get there. :-D :-D

@@MeganKaptein It's a deal, Megan. I would consider it the highest joy & honour to help & show a kindred spirited traveler, the hiker+biker's view of NZ that is 20 x more than what's 'touristically showcased' in the general travel brochures & websites. Yes there is a bit of quality touristy overlap, but much more often than not, the hidden gems are free, not withstanding the journeying magic of the roads less travelled to reach them. Try & allow yourself at least 8 weeks here if possible, to get even a half -decent scratch of the surface of Middle Earth.
But we'll need to use old-skool methods to establish contact as I don't do the usual soc-med suspects of FB or IG out of well-informed, ethical and privacy concerns over their (mis)use of Big Data mining. Although Google/YT aren't that much better these days. So probably best if I touch base first via a contact message on your own dedicated website, 'eh?' ( ;-) )

@Her Motorcycle Adventures ; Gidday cobber(ess) from across 'The Deetch' ( ;-) )This time 7 years ago I was finishing up a 14 day 5000km tour of coastal SE Australia on a rented BMW F650. It was a round trip from Canberra out to Batemans Bay and then following the coast as much as possible (defo incl the Great Ocean Road) as far as Warrnambool, cutting back over the Otway Mtn Ranges, breezing thru Melbourne, then up the Alpine Highway, veering northeast at Omeo over 80km of unsealed road, over the Snowy Mtn range via Cabramurra (Australia's highest town) and finally the back roads into Canberra.
My Canberra-based sister warned me about wombats and 'roos and travelling at dawn/dusk. I 'got' 'roos in my head and their behaviours but couldn't visualise a wombat which I thought was quite a 'small' marsupial like a 'possum. I primarily used to think a W.O.M.B.A.T. was an Engineer's 'Dilbertism' acronym to describe C-level and middle-management ideas that were ill-conceived, under-funded, poorly implemented and finally terminated as a "Waste Of Money, Brains And Time".
And then I saw one 'for reals', or rather the intact but lifeless corpse of one on the side of the road to 'The Prom' (Wilson's Promontory, the southernmost point of the Australian mainland/continent). I pulled over, nudged it with my boot to see how its mass matched its volume, studied it for a coupla minutes and thought "Hmm, a .7m high, mobile, semi-sentient brick wall. No wonder you Aussies have such strong 'roo/bull bars fitted to the fronts of your Toyota HiLux utes and Land Cruisers. Good one. If I hit one of those wombats at speed, I'd be pitched high and spinning head over heels over the handlebars, airborne for 50m before hitting the road, possibly dying then and there from a snapped neck upon impact." :-O :-O .
I then proceeded to break that Golden (Aussie+Nth American) Biker's Travel rule, not once but twice, due to mistaken accomodation planning and distance-time underestimation. The first was riding the Great Ocean Rd at night getting to my pre-booked accommodation at Apollo Bay after just managing to catch the last ferry of the day from Portsea to Queenscliff across 'The Rip' (The entrance to Port Phillip Bay). Luckily, no Koalas in the middle of the road warming themselves on the stored heat of the asphalt! I got a 'dream run' to enjoy the GOR for its curves without the scenery distraction. The next day I proceeded to ride the GOR in both directions for the complete scenic treatment!
The second time I rode at night was between Corryong and Adaminaby right through the heart of Kosciuszko Natl Park. I was *really* nervous about this stretch and took things very slowly and cautiously, constantly on the lookout for hints of wildlife on either side of the road. I thought there would've been hotel accommodation at Cabramurra, but it turns out that is not a 'public' town. It's a 'company' town for the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectic Scheme. I was told the nearest hotel was in Adaminaby and mercifully I was lucky there upon arrival. Equally mercifully there were no mutual-fright wildlife encounters on that entire Koscuiszko traverse road.
So Megan's not the only one who 'wings it' on the accomodation front when exploring :-)

  • @letitrest4662
    @letitrest4662 2 роки тому

I'm nearly 62 years old, and got my motorcycle license at the age of 18. So I've been riding for close to 44 years. I've taken numerous long distance motorcycle trips in those years. My last one almost 8000 miles, in 20 days.
Along the way, over the years, I've also run across many other older two wheeled travelers, like myself. Crossing the U.S., or at least several states, on a trip with no destination. "Reveling in the bliss of the journey", as we've jokingly quipped. It is always a joy to share the happiness of our experiences, when you run into people at gas stops, campgrounds, and road side restaurants. It feels like running into old friends. People that are also, older two wheeled veterans of the road, out there, "drinking-in their universe". Often times no schedule to keep. No one expecting you to show up at point "B", at a certain time.
In my travels, I'll typically cover 350-500 miles per day. On my last trip I logged one 952 mile day, one 740 mile day, and the rest between 350-500 miles. Among we veterans of the road, that I've conversed with, it seems universally true that we have one thing in common, the appreciation of having a machine, that doesn't unnecessarily fatigue you. The subject often gets around to the noise level of our bikes. Most agree that they've found over the years, that quieter is better.
I ride a 2013 Yamaha FJR1300a. She's my Japanese mistress. My best friend.
I watch a lot of UA-cam videos. Mostly related to motorcycle travel, nomadic/ camping living and such, as well as motorcycle reviews.
Occasionally I notice with younger people giving reviews of ADV motorcycles, and speaking of mods that they recommend, is the tendency to recommend a louder exhaust system. I usually chalk that up to people who seldom do multi-day motorcycle trips, and over a hundred miles a day. It's okay because often times it takes a person quite a while before they figure out the magic combinations of factors and comforts that make their traveling an adventure in bliss. That is to say, "I've had loud pipes"........ now I know better. ON TO BLISS.............
Mine is having my Android Smart phone, with a mini SD card, for music storage. Also my set of Bose Noise canceling ear buds, and an inline amplifier. My earbuds switched on, with my Shoei Air GT helmet in combination with the stock quiet exhaust system, blocks out at least 75% of all the ambient noise. Typically I'll be listening to navigation information with music, or an Audible book of my choice, or a podcast. Sometimes UA-cam videos. The experience of riding and enjoying the smells of the nature around me, the blissful scenery zipping by, while listening to something other than the fatiguing drone of exhaust system noise, is as close to heaven as I'm going to get, in my time on earth.
In 2016, "my 8000 miler", I stopped over night in Bozeman, Montana, on my way to Kalispell. The next morning I woke to rain storms, and showers, that would end up lasting for nearly four hours of my ride. It was about 65 degrees(mid August), in Bozeman, and I wasn't about to stand around for several hours under the hotel car awning, with "car" travelers, waiting on a change of weather to come. I donned my rain suit and temporarily my ball cap, and rode my cycle into the carport to load it. Needless to say, the looks I got spoke volumes......... "A 56 year old man on a motorcycle, getting ready to ride off into a rain shower". They didn't have to say what they were thinking. Myself, enjoying the smell of the ionized summer rain shower.
So.... off I went, listening to an audible book about John Adams, and a British girl in my Waze App. I'd like to think that when I rode into sunny Kalispell, Montana, at @ in the afternoon, and a 78 degree temperature, that the "car people" were still standing under the car port, in Bozeman, waiting on "the love of my life", mother nature, to change her mind. Do you know how great it is to ride through Montana, with Swan Lake on one side of you, and Flathead National Forest on the other side, while listening to john Denver sing Sweet Surrender ? It beats the hell out of exhaust noise.
