  • This video should help with identifying Harley Knuckle Head and Panhead date codes. This is what I found online and with my How To Restore Antique Harley Davidson motorcycles book. I did say Shovel in the video but I didn't get into them. I hope this helps. Please Like the video and subscribe. Thank you
    Part number - 121-35 or 121 35
    1936-1947 - Knuckle Head
1937-1948 - Big Twin Flat Head
    1948- early 1964 - Panhead
    Part number - 34703-64
    Late 1964
    Part number - 34703-65
    1965 Panhead
In 1965 the transmission has the mounts for the new inter primary that has electric start.
I got most of this information from a post by Eric Davidson on Speeding Big Twin, the following website.

I’m so confused but this was helpful non the less. Maybe you can help identify mine. 12 1 35 with a plate that’s 110 and another stamp to the right that’s a 1. I am honestly having a hard time figuring it out and you have told me more than the 25+ different websites and forums in this video yet I still can’t figure it out. Anyways, thank you and you’ve done such a great job in this video that I can’t wait to watch more of them.

Just took a closer look and the 1 that is stamped on the right side also has an E stamp next to the 1 but it is very faint.

    Hi @rapsgarage,
Thank you for this video. Ive watched it a bunch of times now. I am curious if you are confident in the vent for the pre ‘39 cases having a vent at all on the case? In Rick Schunk‘s book of restoration (36-64) he stated that from 36-39 the kicker cover had the breather and that by ‘40 the case received the breather. You did mention that around ‘39 is when they had placed the raised boss vent but prior to this the vent was present (flush/flat) and not raised. However, your references stated that it was still in the case, correct? You did not mention if the kicker cover having the vent. Where did you find this information? Bruce Palmer’s book? Thank you for the video and I look forward to your response. Happy new year Sir. 🙏

Yes in 1936-1939 the vent was in the kicker cover only and their was not a boss cast into the case until 1939. In the picture I show, someone drilled that area for a vent. This was not done at the factory, as far as I know. Starting in 1940 the vent was moved into the transmission case. I used a few different sources and one of them was the "How to Restore Your H-D" by Bruce Palmer.
I just want to say, I'm no expert. I see people post on a few Facebook groups that shock me with how much they know about the old stuff. I mean these people are unbelievable with how much they know about anything and everything. I'm more about showing people what works for me when I'm working in my garage... you know, just the average person. I like to show how simple some of the things are so that people try it themselves. This is not what I do for a living. i have an electronics background and I've always worked on my own stuff because I couldn't afford to pay someone.
I do appreciate you watching and always welcome your comments.

Hi, can we use the transmission code as the year of the motocycle made?

    • @Rapsgarage
      @Rapsgarage  4 місяці тому

The transmission code could’ve been on that year or a year later. Like if they made it late in the year of let’s say 49 it might’ve been on a 1950 motorcycle. As far as the year of the motorcycle that would be on the engine code, which is the serial number.
