Holy shit, girl. You are SO CLEAR when you speak, it's super easy to understand what you are trying to explain and that makes you a great teacher. Looking forward to the next lessons, keep the good work. Greetings from Argentina!
Oooo, hello Argentina! Thank you so much ^^
That's an odd yet cool sweater
I happened to stumble upon your channel and I must say, your personality is delightful. ez sub.
Pleaaase, do a raspy voice tutorial ;-;
I love the way you teach!
your tutorials are really helping us who are just starting to do these vocals exercises
Yaaay :D Glad to hear it ^^
You're literally the best teacher
Wooohooo!! ^^
Thank you for all your Fry tutorials. They've been helping me tons. Can't wait for the next set. Will we eventually learn how to add a "scream" to it. I do martial arts and want to use Fry Scream as my Kiai.
I love your kitty. 😽
That's the plan :)
that's probably the most unique reason for learning fry that I've ever heard, and I'm all for it
I ve been watching a lot of fry screaming channel tutorial. This the best. Not more. Not less.
thank you ^^
you are really incredible, you explain all the doubts I had and that I could not find in other places and your way of teaching, your levels are great, really thank you very much, you are the teacher who best explains about these issues, I fall short with the words to say thank you, I send you a big hug from Argentina
aww thank you ^.^
I've been practicing all the things you say for a couple of weeks now, and i can do everything u say, i hope in the next video we get to add more volume. Much love.
yes. need next video plz. works well! nice exercises but how do we add volume without doing all of the "normal" things now plzzzzz. anyway back to annoying my neighbors.
I m not doing false cord anymore. trying to cough/clear my throat like Aliki fcked my voice for almost 2 days. I m too dumb for that.
I’m not a vocalist nor a musician, butI love music and exploring new sounds and the responses I experience from listening an once in a while to find myself singing along.from this I looked around for reaction videos and discovered professional voice coaches, and then you! I find your channel very fun, interesting and captivating. I’ve seen quite. Few of the other presenters in this genre and your re amongst the very best. Thank you. Awesome job!
Have to say, this is the only channel that's been able to get me to start vocal fry! Super excited, and a huge thank you :D
So how is the progression.?
@@franknstein878 It's pretty good, I can do a reasonably stable fry scream on metal tracks! Once I was able to start controlling the basic vocal fry, I started using my diaphragm for power.
@@rohitnutalapati2104 Nice! My False Chords are Brutal at this point 🤘🏻
@@franknstein878 good stuff! Got any music out?
Oh wow, II know I'm late to the party, but....I have saved your videos for the past year, but was too scared to start, because I have had classic/opera style vocal coaching lessons for the past year and imagined this to be the complete opposite and was scared of failing miserably. But because breath work is key for your lessons, I could ACTUALLY USE my knowledge for it and thanks to your amazingly clear teaching, I breezed through this and realized that I can actually do this, thank you SO much!
Yaaaay :D Thank you so much! I'm glad your knowledge helped you ^.^
you were a great find here on youtube, your guidelines are easy to understand and are helping me to have the voice I always wanted, I have no words to say how happy I am to be developing a rock voice, so thank you very much!
awww, yaaay :D
Thank u for the Inspiration. Ur tutorial are realy great, cant wait to get more input.
Glad to find this amazing channel!
:D yaaay ^^
Thanks!!!
One of the best in all youtube, thanks a lot for the positive attitude + the precision + the humor and the pedagogy !
Thank you ^^
Each week I get a new epiphany, today I was able to reach vocal fry at a higher note! 🥰
wooohooo!! :D
I am so happy I found you. I love the way you teach you are so energetic and enthusiastic, and everything you explain, I can catch on and it just makes sense. Thanks a ton for making these tutorials!
Yaay thank you ^^
Awesome video series! And you are really entertaining and likeable=)
Can't wait for the intermediate series to follow! greetings from germany
Yay, hello Germany! It's coming...
You're just amazing, its unbeliveable. I'm from Brazil so euro is too expansive, but certainly I'll still get some classes with you when I can c:
^.^ Thank you
Hi, - that's for me:

NO SABES LO AGRADECIDO DE QUE TENGA SUBTITULOS EN ESPAÑOL, DE VERDAD, MUCHAS GRACIAS! ME SUCRIBO! OJALA LOS DEMAS ESTE IGUAL! :C
I always wondered why I found it easier to generate the sound first thing in the morning!
Now you know :P ^^
knowledge BOMBZ
xD
Thanx so much Aliki ;)...."a screamer" from Italy ;)
:D Ciao ^^
@@AlikiKatriou ahaha ciaoooooo 😜🤘🏻
Love these vids! Lookin forward to the rest! Any hints about increasing volume yet? High pitches are beginning to work, but still only guessing at making this sound useable in music. :D
Ah, not quite yet. Have to prioritize getting people high up first. After that: volume.
Thank you very much for your excellent videos! I'm a guitar player who is dabbling in vocals (from a pandemic-shielded bunker) and I thought I'd ask if you might do a little video about vocal microphones and mic accessories that work well false chord and vocal fry singing? Excellent work, and thanks again.
Ah, I wouldn't be as well equipped to make this video as other people I know. I really like getting the tone I want organically/live and just using a microphone to capture the live sound rather than anything else. I've also found that anything that works for my cleans works for all distortions too in my experience.
Thank you for your very good videos and professionalism. I have already improved my vocal fry in a few days, and I think I will be able to place some vocals on my compositions very soon. Well... I have already tried it for fun and I am quite happy of what I can do. I need more practice and consistency. but you allow me to start with good foundations, so thanks for that.
I have watch several times your videos, and I am now impatient to learn more about how to improve my Falsseto vocal fry. So... when will come the part VI ? :-))))))
Thank you again for the content of your videos, and I wish you good success in teaching and in music in general.
See you!
Thank you ^^ I'm happy you're vocals are doing well. I just uploaded the first intermediate false fold tutorial, so fry is coming either next week or in 2 weeks from now ^^
@@AlikiKatriou yeahhhh thank you :-))))
CUTE CATTT❤️😍
Hello Aliki, love your videos pls keep them coming. My question is does larynx raise doring vocal fry?
It doesn't have to raise. That being said, your final result of fry is probably going to be on a high larynx position.
I love your videos, how passionate and excelent teacher you are! It seems to me that you are a really sensitive person.
I want to ask you: what can you say about volume? How can you go from this to actually scream? I can not get it right! I would like talk to you. Do you give private lessons? Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina!
Yes, I give private lessons. You can check out my availability on the booking page of my website www.aliki.katriou.com
It depends on what kind of scream you want as a final goal. Volume in fry is a resonance event, not a "volume" event as with clean singing. All the advanced fry videos are going to focus on volume.
Thanks to U ,I already achieved my vocal fry.now I would like to achieve my raspy voice 😅
Fantastic! It will happen... I'm going to upload stuff on raspy voice too. Everything has been really pushed back both because work is super busy and because the lovely neighbours are doing construction and it's difficult to find filming times XD
@@AlikiKatriou i was trying to imitate Mark Slaughter voice in Time of the year song,do you think he uses vocal fry mixed with falsettoPonto ?
@@surrealisticworld995 Short answer: no idea.
Longer answer: it sounds like a lot of different things at random times... there is breathiness being used, there is fry sometimes but then at other times I think it's an aryepiglottic distortion...
@@AlikiKatriou i ll upload some covers on my channel,so you can evaluate later, teacher, thank you
❤
Your tutorials are great !
I can do pretty control fry in the fry vocal range, but I’m struggling more in the falsetto range.
In the chest range I manage to make the fry resonate in the nose cavity and superpose it with a pitch but I’am not sure if it is a good thing... Do you have some addvices ?
I have a whole set of tutorials coming up on the falsetto range for fry, so hopefully something in there will help. As far as resonating in your nasal cavity, that's just a preference thing. Nothing wrong with it :) When you say superimpose it with a pitch, do you mean clean and fry at the same time?
Yeeee , i knew it. I ditched Melissa Cross' warm ups for cleans and started to progress immediately in both fry and false fold ! Jesus
Zen of Screaming is useless? I'm kinda invested on it:( ...
@@crocopie ... let's just say, this here is a better place. 😉
@@crocopie i torrented it but since i figured that it's useless deleted it instantly. For beginners Aliki is best in screams department, i scream like a beast right now thank to her channel. I lack on cleans right now so there's very high quality free channels on yt in that regard which I'm digging right now. As for Melissa Cross i just think its non professional non educational more like entertainment material. Her warm ups and exercises will put strain on your voice and will ruin your performance, they're just random.
@@to_boldly_roll XD
@@crocopie I think it's worth trying different things. Many screamers have learnt via Melissa Cross' material. Different things work for different people. As long as you don't blame yourself when something doesn't work and you keep trying it's all good :)
Any song you'd recommend for practice? And could I practice vocal fry exercises with false cord exercises? Thanks.
If you're going to practise fry and false fold, I would practise fry first then move on to false cords. For songs, it depends on your taste, I wouldn't necessarily move on to songwork this early on in the process. Fry, probably something by In This Moment, for false fold Id go to earlier Arch Enemy as there are good distances between the vocal lines.
Hello! I found your videos when trying to learn how to use the subharmonic register, because I heard you use vocal fry to do it. Is that true at all? There really isn’t consistent information on how to do it because they never actually explain what vocal fry is or how to do it to make the octave drop, and sometimes they even say you use it in combination with your false folds which doesn’t make sense to me. The way you explain things makes the most sense to me, so if you know anything about the technique where you sing a note, do something with your voice, and then it comes out an octave lower (which is what I think subharmonic register means), then I would greatly appreciate hearing what you know.
Hi! I have a student who is an avid fan of subharmonic bass singing and we're trying to figure it all out. As far as I can tell, yes it's vocal fry usually. It is physiologically possible to activate the false vocal folds while the true vocal folds are in vocal fry but I have never heard any of the subharmonic guys do that. I don't think they're really doing that. My working hypothesis at the moment, is that the subharmonic guys are getting into vocal fry and then activating the thyroarytenoid muscle on their vocal folds (which would make them feel like they're in chest voice). For whatever reason, that tends to produce a weird auditory illusion that the singer dropped an octave, even though they didn't... Unfortunately, I am not aware of any research conducted on this type of singing but I haven't exactly spent months looking into it either.
I hope you will explain how to stretch and relax at the same time because this is a little bit strange to me 😂 Anyway, instructive vidéos thanks 😸
Yup, we'll be working on that in the next set of videos :)
Hello, " vocal fry volume" will be in the next "intermediate" set of vids?
If you could make "scream" singing/raspy voice tutorial it would be awesome :D
I will make raspy ones at some point. Volume is probably going to be advanced rather than intermediate. This is just assuming that not everything is going to work for everyone in the beginner stuff and we need more time spent getting fry in higher pitches before we boost the volume.
@@AlikiKatriou Thank you!
have you given an example of combo distortion in the previous videos? heard you talk about it, but i might have missed the "what not to do example" over all the noises i've been making while watching lol.
I haven't given an example of a combo distortion but it's mostly because there is no "fixed" tonal quality to a combo. A good starting point for combo-like sounds would be anything by In Flames...
Just a random question: does the fry scream actually use the vocal fry?
I came across a website that teaches screaming for free and states exactly that. The approach to fry scream there is through twang. I've tried it but it ended up in coughing and pain.
Idk it just really confused (and still does confuse) me..
Yes, I would say fry screaming and vocal fry are basically the same thing. The approach through twang is a common one. I don't use twang in the beginning at all and I personally avoid twang for myself. If it's the sound people are looking for, we work on twang, but it does tend to make everything too tight and squeeze everything too much and then it's coughing galore! xD
Can you maintain adding volume to the fry technique?
Typically "volume" in fry is added through the resonating shape not by actually increasing the volume. There is a way to get a very loud fry but it isn't the best starting point to build up the skill :)
@@AlikiKatriou That makes a lot of sense thanks 🙏
Just wondering, how can you whisper and sing at the same time? You can do it, I know it. 😃👍
hahaha, this is a tough question to answer... I think part of it is start by singing and bring the volume really down rather than starting from a whisper... but I'm not sure if you're asking about clean or distorted stuff XD
These tutorials have been great but how do I turn this into a scream
We're moving in that direction... theoretically the next fry series should make that fairly clear...
hold up, these guides are free?
that's the idea ^^
So pretty much vocal fry is just developing all those hours of us 90's kids imitating the Grudge into singing? I've always wondered how bands will randomly use vocal fry and I just for the life of me could not imitate the way they sound (kind of clean but also like they just woke up) and was even more confused when I hear them speak normally during interviews because that's not how they sound
XD Yes, in a sense. Then again, if we're looking at how much some people struggle, it's like saying that belting is just taking your speaking voice & singing with it - it can be challenging to do :) But yes, the principle is that simple ^^
This girl vacillates between giving depressed serial killer and charming, feminine, even joyous, vibes in a blink of an eye. Im truly afraid of her.
I see it... XD
Whats next ?
Working on the content ^^
LOL!
Bro why would someone do this to theyr voice?
Is she contralto?
I'm a soprano ^^
Well this whole series was disappointing I was hoping to learn how to get into fry screaming.
Patience is a virtue! 😉 No, but seriously - this stuff takes time if learned and done correctly. It will get there! 😉
Sorry :) This is just laying down the basics. In my experience teaching these things most people can't get into a scream because one of these fundamental coordinations is lacking or missing. Also, if I promised to get anyone screaming within 5 videos online I would just be lying.
I've been practicing all the things you say for a couple of weeks now, and i can do everything u say, i hope in the next video we get to add more volume. Much love.
:) unfortunately, next step is getting all the way to the top of your range in weird ways and then it's volume.
